Last Friday’s storm, which lasted for barely an hour, grossly affected the cluster of schools which are battling for survival owing to enrollment challenges.

Among the affected schools are Yaa Achiaa M/A Primary and Kindergarten (KG), Asem M/A Experimental Primary School and Junior High School (JHS).

This development comes in the wake of reopening of schools by the Ghana Education Service (GES), which was slated for Tuesday, October 3, 2023. If these casualties are anything to go by, academic activities could be greatly affected.

On a working visit to the Asem cluster of schools, which the GES has failed to protect from encroachers, The Chronicle observed that the roofing sheets of the storey building of the Asem Experimental Primary had been ripped away together with the ceilings panels.

The one storey Yaa Achiaa M/A Primary and KG also had its roofing sheets destroyed by the rampaging wind.

A tree which served as a wind-brake in front of the said school was destroyed by the storm.

Speaking to one of the watchmen of the cluster of schools on condition of anonymity, he confirmed that the rains had caused havoc in the school, destroying the trees as well.

He disclosed to this paper that apart from the place where he provides security, other sister schools in Asem had been impacted negatively by the storm.

Reached on phone, the Assembly Member for the Asem Electoral Area, Mr. Kusi Serebour, confirmed to The Chronicle that the Asem cluster of schools had been badly hit by last Friday’s storm.

Quizzed about what the number of schools affected, Serebour stated that Yaa Achiaa, Asem Mixed, and Yaa Asantewaa were the schools which were affected.

Responding to a question about what he was doing about the situation, he explained that since the havoc occurred on a weekend, he had been in touch with authorities in the schools, adding that he would meet with them at the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate for action to be taken, since school reopened this week.
