Lowly placed Cagliari welcome high-flying Inter Milan

0
Edin Dzeko, Inter Milan

Sunday sees further action from the Italian top flight and this upcoming Serie A clash between lowly Cagliari and high-flying Inter Milan when the two teams meet at the Unipol Domus ground with both teams needing all three points to boost their respective situations at either end of the table.

Cagliari sit third from bottom in the domestic top flight but they trail Salernitana and possible safety by just a single point ahead of this weekend’s action in Serie A but the hosts look to have a mountain to climb this Sunday against Inter Milan. Cagliari’s situation has become increasingly precarious as the hosts have managed to capture just one win from their last nine matches overall in Serie A, which came in the form of a 1-0 home win against Sassuolo.

But seven defeats within this period have dumped the hosts in the bottom three.

Having picked up just three home wins in total so far this season at their Unipol Domus ground, Cagliari are expected to have their work cut out as they seek some sort of result in order to keep in touch with the teams above them.

By contrast, Inter Milan sit in 2nd place and just two points behind their fierce rivals, AC Milan, thanks to winning six of their last seven matches overall in the Italian top flight. Inter Milan obviously still remain firm favourites for the points.

Venezia desperate to avoid relegation against Roma

0
Jose Mourinho, Roma

Jose Mourinho’s Roma have a UEFA Europa Conference League final to look forward to and they have been ruled out of finishing in the top four and the UEFA Champions League. Given that, the capital city side are expected to be resting and rotating as the season goes on. They now come up against a Venezia side that have endured a really difficult campaign. The visitors sit at the bottom-of-the-table heading for Serie B. A low-scoring and fairly uninteresting home win appears likely.

Roma come into the game on the back of a 2-0 loss at Fiorentina on Monday night. It was a poor start from Roma, who may have been suffering a hangover from their match in the Europa Conference League, and they could not get back into the match.

The result means Roma have recorded only a single victory from their 6 most recent fixtures in all competitions. Roma cannot rely on winning the Europa Conference League to book a place in Europe next season and want to finish in 5th place.

They must win this game to have any chance and should come out on top comfortably. Venezia are also desperate for the points to avoid relegation but their fate will be sealed with a defeat.

Can City beat West Ham to claim Premier League trophy

Man City players

May 15th could be the day that Man City claim the 2021/22 Premier League trophy but the visitors will have to better Liverpool’s result in order to seal the title with one game to spare. West Ham are still in with a very good chance of pipping Man Utd to 6th spot in the league this season but really need to beat Man City in order to achieve their goal.

City boast a superb away league record so far this season, losing just once in our opening game of the season away to Tottenham Hotspur.
Pep Guardiola‘s men have also won the last five league games, scoring 22 goals and conceding just twice in the process.
As for the Hammers, their form has dipped of late, with David Moyes’ side winning just once in their last five Premier League games, though they won last time out, beating Norwich 4-0 at Carrow Road. Man City have won five of their last seven encounters with West Ham in all competitions and we’re backing Guardiola’s men to secure another win when it really matters this weekend.

Barcelona to continue strong away form against Getafe

Will Barcelona continue their strong away form under Xavi? Since the change of management, Bara is unbeaten in La Liga, winning nine of 14 games, drawing another five. This included last Saturday night’s 2-1 win over Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, thanks to Jordi Alba’s last-minute volley.

Then, on Tuesday, the Blaugrana easily beat Celta Vigo 3-1 with Memphis breaking the deadlock and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring twice.

The Gabon striker ended his mini-goal plan. Bara have now secured Champions League qualification, needing a point for a second place finish that will see them return to the Supercopa next year.

Meanwhile Getafe, despite losing their first seven games, and not winning until Halloween, are almost safe from relegation.

On Wednesday, they came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Osasuna at El Sadar, earning the points thanks to an own goal.

As such, having lost just two of their last nine matches, Quique Sánchez Flores’ side have 38 points, which should be enough to maintain their La Liga status.

Will it be a night of celebration at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, or will Bara be too strong?

Handcuff

The three persons who were allegedly involved in the murder of a mechanic in Tema, in the Greater Accra region, have been arraigned before a Kaneshie Magistrate court on Tuesday, this week, on the counts of murder and attempted robbery.

The accused persons, who are said to be unemployed and residents of Ashiaman are; Benjamin Essel (A1), Latif Nashiru (A2) and Michael Tetteh (A3).

The district court, presided over by His Honour Oheneba Tuffour, remanded the accused persons to reappear before it on June 2.

The following are the facts as read in court by the prosecutor, Inspector Margaret Ofori Boadi.

Complainant Samuel Ankomah is a Foreman at Mahak Ghana Limited-Tema. PW2 Felix Tetteh Batse is a resident of Tema Community 22.

Deceased James Tetteh Laweh, aged 33 years, was a Mechanic and the brother to PW2. Accused persons Benjamin Essel A1, Latif Nashiru, A2 and Michael Tetteh, A3 are all unemployed and living at Ashaiman.

A4 and A5 are currently at large. On 18th February, 2022 PW2 received a call from unknown mobile number, 0548332419, who expressed interest in purchasing his unregistered Toyota RAV-4 vehicle and demanded to have a proper look at the vehicle before buying same.

On 22nd April, 2022 A1 again placed a call to PW2 with same mobile number (0548332419) and demanded for the pictures of the said vehicle, which was sent to him by PW2.

A1 on receipt of the photographs then introduced himself as a Medical Doctor, working at the Community 22 Poly Clinic and demanded PW2 to produce same to him for inspection.

Prior to this, PW2 had given out PW1’s mobile number to A1 to liaise with him for the inspection, but PW1 could not assist due to work.

On 23rd April, 2022 A1 again called on PW2 to produce the said vehicle to him for inspection at the Tema Community 22 Poly Clinic.

Without hesitation, PW2 then called deceased James Tetteh Laweh to proceed with the vehicle for inspection. PW1 then released the ignition keys to the deceased to be taken to A1. The deceased person proceeded to Tema Community 22 Poly Clinic for inspection by A1.

A1 expressed interest in the vehicle and demanded for the documents. On 25th April, 2022 PW1 met James Tetteh Laweh, the deceased person, at Tema Community 4 roundabout and proceeded to Tema Community 22 Poly Clinic for inspection by the Medical Doctor, A1.

A1, together with the deceased, sat in the Toyota RAV-4 for inspection and onward pricing, as PW1 stood by. It was noticed that, the Form C and GRA receipts were missing from the complete vehicle documents.

A1 then called on the deceased to get them set so he can pay for same after they arrive at a price. The deceased, together with PW1 returned to their warehouse at Kpone for the documents but could not trace same. They then made enquiries to a DVLA official who intimated he could help in the registration process with A1’s name and passport photographs.

Same information was relayed to A1 who then asked the deceased to return to him for the passport size pictures. PW1 and deceased James Tetteh Laweh, on reaching the Tema Community 22 Poly Clinic, then met A1 in a brownish suit dress in the company of A4.

A1 then instructed A4 to take control of the steering so as he could get his passport size photos from a nearby house to the deceased for the registration processes.

A4 then drove PW1 and the deceased to a house closer to Bampoe Hotel on the Mawuli close Street and identified it as the place where the passport size photos are to be obtained.

A4 alighted from the vehicle for some number of minutes whilst making a call. The deceased person suspected A4’s actions, took the ignition keys and turned the vehicle, whilst PW1 also stood by making a call. Suddenly A2, A3 and A5 emerged on an okada motorbike. A2 and A5 ambushed the deceased whilst A3 pursued PW1.

Upon several attacks on the deceased, he flung the ignition key into a nearby bush which incurred the wrath of A2, who shot him in the neck.

A2, A3, A4 and A5 upon sensing danger fled, living the RAV-4 vehicle behind. PW1, who absconded, made a report to the Police.

The Police proceeded to the said location and met a male adult lying in a pool of blood and conveyed him to the Tema General hospital, but was pronounced dead and deposited at the morgue.

On 2nd April, 2022 the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of CID headquarters gathered intelligence that A1, A2, A3 and others did rob and murder deceased James Tetteh Laweh.

A1, A2 and A3 were herded to Amasaman China Mall area for another robbery expedition but were all arrested. A search conducted on A2 and A3 revealed two locally made pistols plus ten rounds of 9mm ammunition.

On interrogation, A1 admitted positing as a medical Doctor to purchase the complainant’s vehicle and did meet the deceased and PW1 at Tema Community 22 Poly Clinic on 25th April 2022.

He further intimated that, he was later informed by A2 and A3 that, the driver of the vehicle had been murdered. A2 on the other hand admitted having shot and killed the deceased together with A3 but it was on the instructions of A1 and A4.

That, after the robbery, they fled together with A4. He added that the said weapon used in the murder of James Laweh was brought in by A1 who hired same from a gangster at Ashaiman.

On 5th May, 2022 an identification parade was conducted at the forecourt of the CID headquarters, PW1 identified A1 as the medical doctor who wore a gold ring and black ring on the 25th April, 2022 when they met him at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic in a Brownish suit.

PW1 again identified A2 and A3 as the young men who came on a motorbike to murder deceased James Tetteh Laweh.

Investigations revealed that A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 did agree and murdered deceased James Tetteh Laweh at gunpoint. The pathologist averred that, the deceased sustained grievous gunshot wound at close range.

The accused persons are put before this honourable court for their remand and further investigations. Efforts are underway to arrest their accomplices.

We will make Ahafo the third force for NPP -Chiefs

0
. President Akufo-Addo with a delegation from the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs after a meeting at the Jubilee House
President Akufo-Addo interacting with some of the chiefs from the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House.

The chiefs of Ahafo Region have vouched to work hard to maintain the region as the third force for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the country. The intention was made known by the President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, Nana Ansah Adu Baah II. He had led the traditional authorities in the Ahafo Region to pay a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo at Jubilee House, yesterday, Wednesday, May 11, 2022.

Addressing the President, Nana Ansah Adu Baah II first congratulated him on his re-election, indicating that to Nananom (chiefs) the victory reflected the level of confidence Ghanaians had in the programmes and policies of his government.

He then gave the assurance: “It is the intention of Nananom to work hard to ensure that the Ahafo Region maintains its place as the third stronghold of the governing New Patriotic Party. For this one, I want to repeat; it is the initiation of Nananom to work hard to ensure that the Ahafo Region maintains its place as the third stronghold for the governing New Patriotic Party.”

He had earlier commended the President for heeding the call of the people of Ahafo and creating the region, indicating that marked the beginning of goodies to the area.

Challenges

Nana Ansah Adu Baah II seized the opportunity to outline some issues they needed the government to address. Among others, he mentioned that the greatest challenge confronting the Ahafo Region was the poor road network, and appealed for its improvement.

He also appealed to the President to upgrade the Goaso-Tepa road to asphaltic surface, to depict the status of a highway, and the capacity to handle the fleet of heavy trucks that ply the road.

He further mentioned several other roads in the region that needed some construction works, including that of Hwediem-Kenyase, Yamfo-Bomaa-Tepa, Bediako-Kasapii and Bechem town roads.

Away from roads, Nananom also appealed to the President to consider indigenes of the Ahafo Region when making appointments to the boards of state institutions. The chiefs also requested for a stadium for the Bechem football club, and school buses.

Ongoing Road Projects

President Akufo-Addo, in his response, acknowledged issues of roads across the country, but said his administration had performed tremendously well in fixing several of them year after year.

However, he admitted that for lack of funds, all poor roads could not be constructed within his tenure, but added that the government was doing its best. Speaking specifically on Ahafo, President Akufo-Addo said that per the programme of the Roads Minister, the asphaltic work of the Goaso road would take place this year.

Apparently, the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, had got in touch with the Roads Minister, who was not at the meeting, for further information. He then informed the meeting that Mr. Kwasi Amoako Atta had told him that a total of 58 road projects were ongoing in the Ahafo Region, out of which 38 were active, and that the remaining 20 would have to be reactivated.

He listed some of the active projects as the Bechem-Techiman-Akomandan reconstruction, upgrading of Nobekwaw to Sunkore road, upgrading of Goaso town roads, including dualisation.

Chieftaincy Disputes

President Akufo-Addo raised concerns on chieftaincy conflicts in the country. He was worried that the government was compelled to spend public resources to solve these conflicts, through deploying security and other measures.

Apart from the public disturbances, President Akufo-Addo told the chiefs they would be shocked to know the monies the government spend on chieftaincy conflicts, and appealed through the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs to the rest to end those disputes.

He cited the out-dooring of the Kwahu State Book, which set out their genealogy, and urged all house of chiefs to emulate. Speaking in the Akan dialect, President Akufo-Addo was of the view that, “the codification of the royal lineage is something every region should do, so that succession issues will not be a problem.”

Mr Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B)

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has assured members of the elephant party of his commitment to help recapture parliamentary seats that were lost to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in election 2020.

It would be recalled that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who had a majority of 169 members in the seventh parliament, lost 32 of its seats to the opposition NDC, leaving them with just 137 members by the end of the 2020 elections.

But Nana Boakye, who is currently eyeing the National Organiser position in the upcoming national executive elections slated for July, this year, says he would ensure that those lost seats are re-captured.He mentioned this as part of a ten point strategic plan, which he intends to roll out to secure the party’s victory in election 2024, when he is given the nod to be the party’s National Organiser.

The other plans which he intends to roll out when given the nod are; developing an all-inclusive& participatory activity master plan, strategic communication built on solid organisation & training, resource & logistic mobilisation and continuous training and capacity building programmes.

The remaining five are building a stronger volunteer/identifiable group management system, organising special wings outreach programmes, strengthening the party’s membership drive efforts, digitization and strengthening Diaspora party activities and programmes.

Mr Boakye, who is known in political circle as ‘Nana B’, believes that all these programs will resonate well with the delegates and the rank and file of the party and eventually secure victory for the elephant party.

Speaking about why he is vying for the National Organiser position, Mr Boakye said he believes he has gathered the relevant skills and experiences from the various positions he has held in the party, starting from the grassroots level and is capable of steering the party’s wheels to a victorious win come 2024.

He mentioned positions he has held at the polling station, the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), constituency and national level as forming the basis for his strong sense of leadership, which he believed will enable him play the role of the National Organiser with ease.

“In July this year, the party will once again go to Conference to elect National Officers to lead the party for the next 4 years. Respectfully, I’m putting myself up to be elected as National Organiser of our party when the time is due. I have made this informed decision, premised on the enormous experience and relevant skills set I have acquired, coupled with proven track record whiles rising through the ranks – from Polling Station, TESCON, Constituency, Region to my current position as National Youth Organiser.”

He disclosed that his campaign will commence today in the Ashanti region and he would meet with the newly elected constituency officers and existing regional officers to put forth his vision and objectives.

He, however, noted that his campaign will be devoid of insults and attacks because his track record, skills and experiences will speak for him and not insults.

“Let me hasten to add that my campaign would be totally clean and decorous devoid of insults or disrespect or personal attacks whatsoever. I have great confidence in my track record and I’m fully convinced that my message crafted around a 10 point strategic plan, outlined below, under the theme – “Strategic Organisation for NPP’s Sustained growth & success” will resonate with delegates and the rank and file.”

He used the opportunity to congratulate all party faithfuls who have been elected to occupy various positions at the polling station, electoral area and constituency levels while wishing the unsuccessful aspirants better luck next time.

He encouraged all stakeholders to bury their differences and in unison, work assiduously to strengthen the party at the base to consolidate the party’s electoral gains.

Dome market woman defrauded off GH¢147k

Accra Circuit Court

A self-styled businessman, Samuel Aboagye, has allegedly defrauded a business woman at the Dome Market, Deborah Bortsie, of GHC147,328.00 under the pretence that he has been contracted by government to supply rice to the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).

Deborah was said to have supplied Samuel with 1,151 bags of rice at a unit cost of GHC128.00 in March 2020, but the latter has since failed to pay back the money.

Samuel has, therefore, appeared before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, on seven different counts, including defrauding by false pretence and issuance of false cheques.

The court was told during sitting on Tuesday, this week, by the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah, that Deborah is the complainant in the case and resident of Kaneshie, while the accused, Samuel, is a businessman and resides at Tantra Hill all in the Greater Accra region.

According to the prosecutor, the accused person, on March 3rd, 4th, 6th and 10th, 2020 respectively approached the complainant at her warehouse at Dome market, where she had packed Thailand rice with the brand name DTS for sale.

He said the accused person made a false representation to the complainant that he has been contracted to supply the Government of Ghana with rice and other commodities under the School Feeding Programme.

According to C/Insp Anquandah, the accused further misrepresented to the complainant that supplying commodities to the Programme allows the government to make timeous payment to suppliers and upon this misrepresentation, Deborah was convinced and supplied Samuel with the said bags of rice.

According to the Prosecuting officer, Samuel after taking delivery of the rice promised to pay in a week’s time and subsequently issued three separate Consolidated Bank Ghana Ltd (CBG) cheques – cheque No. 000007 with a face value of GHC38,400.00 – Cheque No. 000008 with face value of GHC10,0000.00 and cheque No. 0000012 with face value of GHC76,800.00 – to the complainant for clearance.

He narrated to the court that the accused person dated and endorsed only cheque No. 000008 with the face value of GHC10,000.00 which was to mature on March 13, 2020.

“The remaining two undated cheques were issued to the complainant on 6th March, 2020. The two cheques were also to mature on March 13, 2020.

“Upon maturation of the cheques, the complainant made efforts to contact the accused about the presentation of the cheques, but his line failed to go through,” he added.

“The Prosecutor indicated that after a month of issuing the cheques, the accused called the complainant to stop her from presenting the cheques including the undated for clearance.”

He stated that Deborah after several failed attempts to collect the money from the accused reported the case to the police.

The court was told that investigation conducted by the police at the CBG Ltd revealed that the accused had no funds in his account as at March13, 2020.

“It was again revealed that the accused person did not supply the rice to the School Feeding Programme, as he made the complainant to believe and had no contract with School Feeding Programme.

“He instead sold it out to his customers including one Grace Owusu Agyiri a.k.a. Obaa Yaa who is at large. It was further disclosed that on July 14, 2020 the accused gave an ECOBANK account belonging to his wife to suspect Grace Owusu Agyiri instead of the CBG account known to the complainant and an amount of GHC15,000.00 was transferred into the account by Grace Owusu Agyiri.”

The Prosecutor further stated that the accused after his arrest, admitted during interrogation for having received a total sum of GHC19,950.00 from Obaa Yaa as part payment of the rice he sold to her, but failed to hand over same to the complainant.

C/Inp Acpnquandah added that at the Police Station, Isaac refunded GHC4,000.00 out of the GHC19,950.00 which has been kept as exhibit.

The accused plea was not taken and has been admitted to bail at the sum of GHC147, 328.00 with two gainfully employed sureties, one to be justified by landed property valued at the amount involved.

The sureties are to deposit photocopies of their passport or Ghana Card with the court registry.

Case has been adjourned to June 2, 2022.

Indulgence of Churches in politics is regrettable -SDA Pastor

0
Pastor Dr. Kwanim Kwakye presenting Bible to the new ordained Pastors on behalf of the SDA Church

Pastor Dr. Kwame Kwanim Boakye, President of the Northern Ghana Union Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church, has expressed worry over the indulgence of churches in politics for the sake of fame, power and riches.

He noted that pastors were neglecting the Word of God and resorting to politics, the reason why churches were becoming more corrupt at an unimaginable rate lately.

Speaking at a joint ordination service of three pastors into the Gospel Ministry at the Central Ghana Conference Headquarters at Kwadaso, he stated that pastors of today would not preach salvation and eternal life, but have opted to do politics to make quick monies by preaching wealth, claiming to take away death from people, and acquisition of visas, just because they need power, fame, and money in addition to womanising or engaging in adultery at the expense of the vulnerable in society, and their congregations.

He reminded the ordained pastors to take the path of righteousness as they were preparing to commit themselves to God, in accordance with the biblical truth at a time churches were digressing the path of righteousness.

According to him, the people of today do not like the Word of God, and even Ministers of the Gospel now set in the direction of God just to become famous and powerful.

He urged the ordained to avail their services to the people devoid of deceit and exploitation.

Speaking on the theme: “There to be the people of God in time of waiting,” he was of the view that their leadership was in crisis today because some people were fed up with waiting for the second coming of Christ, hence, the change in Christendom, paving the way for modern Christians who expect only miracles, thinking God was delaying.

Pastor Boakye, however, tasked the ordained to observe all the laws in the time of waiting for God, cautioning that “if only we endures him, he would rise with us, but if we deny him, he would deny us, for he is ever faithful,” he underscored.

The President of NGUC of the SDA reminded them that human beings do not belong to darkness and adultery, and challenged them to wake-up and present the truth in more remarkable manners, and must not accept the demands of the people by neglecting God’s word.

Pastor Yaw Asamoah, President of Central Ghana Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), at the ordination, noted that as a young pastors he was convinced that they would help grow the church and help the entire youth in their jurisdictions, and the country as a whole, in reshaping their lives in the right direction to take up leadership roles in future.

The three ordained included Pastors Fetus Kwaku Appiagyei, Derrick Agyei Yeboah and Arituo Kyilleh.

Pastor Festus Kwaku Appiagyei, on behalf of his colleagues, commended the entire SDA Church for the support, both in kind or cash, by making their dreams come true to the call of God to work in his vineyard.

He expressed their profound gratitude to their district Pastors, the local churches members and their wives for their assistance, encouragement guidance in a diverse ways to see them through the journey.

Yammin, Akamba trade in blames for weak organisational structures in NDC

0
Joseph Yammin - NDC National Organizer hopeful

The former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister under the erstwhile John Manama administration, Joseph Yammin, has said the weak organisational structures discovered in the branches during the national outreach exercise embarked upon by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executives was attributable to what he calls ‘the lazy approach’ exhibited at the party organisational department, led by the National Organiser, Joseph Hamidu Akamba.

According to Joseph Yammin, who also served as a former Deputy Sports Minister, the Organisational Department comprised of the women and the youth wings of the party, with the National Organiser leading the onslaught, and that any defect in terms of its potency must be placed at the doorsteps of the National Organiser.

Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle in Kumasi, Mr. Yammin said the outcome of the National Outreach Programme by the NDC National Executives indicated that the party branches in some constituencies were weak and needed some reinforcement, thereby creating the need for the National Organiser, Joshua Hamidu Akamba, who he described as a failure, to bow out for a fresh replacement with new ideas to rejuvenate the energy of the party at the grassroots levels.

On what he brings to the table, Mr. Yammin, who is also the NDC National Organiser-hopeful, noted that he once served as the party Regional Secretary in the Ashanti Region, and a parliamentary candidate for Kwadaso Constituency, which afforded him the privilege to interact and know the needs of party members at the ward and branch levels.

This, he said, had equipped him with the experience to be able to mobilise the grassroots members to work for the victory of the NDC in the coming general elections.

He said, as someone who has the proven ability to understand party problems and provide on the spot solutions to same, he would carry the masses along by providing inspirational leadership, which, he said, was currently lacking at the NDC organisational department.

In response, the National Organiser, Joseph Hamid Akamba, told The Chronicle  that he was popular on the ground and had done enough work to enable him retain his position in the coming NDC national elections. He accused Joseph Yammin of doing little to help revamp the fortunes of the NDC in the Kwadaso Constituency, which, he said, was among the NDC constituencies with weak branches.

The National Democratic Congress commissioned its national executives soon after the 2020 general elections to embark on an outreach programme in the party branches in all the 275 constituencies throughout the country to ascertain some of problems that worked against the party’s victory in the 2020 general elections.

Some of the problems identified, according to Mr. Akamba, included weak organisational structures at branches levels, thereby compelling the members to preoccupy their efforts in revitalising the branches throughout the country.
