RTU wallop Hearts to narrowly escape relegation

0
RTU wallop Hearts

Real Tamale United will play in the Ghana Premier League next season after a shocking final-day result against Hearts of Oak on Sunday. The northern giants produced their best performance of the season to defeat the Phobians at the Accra Sports Stadium and finish above the relegation zone.

RTU, who came into the game knowing that any win would suffice, fell behind after nine minutes when their goalkeeper was punished for poor positioning.

Suraj Seidu’s goal put Hearts ahead, but RTU equalised 10 minutes later through Ronald Frimpong.

David Abagna kept his cool and scored a penalty for RTU to go ahead in the 30th minute. Frimpong added his second goal before halftime to make it 3-1.

RTU came out of the break with the same attitude and recorded their fourth goal as defender Mohammed Alhassan scored an own goal.

The 4-1 victory over former champions is a famous result for RTU, and they will be overjoyed that it ensured their safety. When they were last relegated, it took them eight years to return, so they were determined not to suffer relegation to the Division One League. They won their final two crucial games to secure their spot for next season.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak finish their league campaign outside the top four, but they have a trophy to fight for next week when they face Bechem United in the MTN FA Cup final in Kumasi.

Karela United ended their 2021/22 season’s campaign finishing fourth on the log following their slim win over West African Football Academy on the final day.

West African Football Academy (WAFA) have suffered relegation from the Ghanaian top-flight league following a 1-0 away defeat to Karela United in their match-week 34 encounter.

A second half strike from Umar Bashiru cemented Karela United’s place in top four after the fixture had ended in a scoreless draw in the first half at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Aiyinase.

After lack of goals in the first half, Midfield gem Umar Bashiru extended his goal tally for Karela United to 13 goals after registering his name on the score sheet for the hosts in the 49th minute of the game.

WAFA kept their hopes alive in the remaining minutes with hopes of at least levelling the score but all their efforts went futile.

West African Football Academy SC have suffered relegation from the Ghana Premier League after securing their status back from Division One League zone two in 2014.

Accra Lions share spoils with Asante Kotoko

Accra Lions vs Asante Kotoko

Accra Lions held newly-crowned champions Asante Kotoko to a pulsating encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium on the final day of the campaign.  Abass Samari’s second half strike was cancelled by Samuel Boateng as the two sides shared the spoils.

Accra Lions got off to a good start and came close to taking the lead after Osman Kasim rose high to meet a corner from Abass Samari.

Samari nearly broke the deadlock after a spell of dominance form the hosts, his header from a cross from Rashid Abubakar went inches wide.

Asante Kotoko’s best chance came when Frank Mbella had only Fredrick Asare to beat but the Lions goalkeeper was equal to the task, just before the break.

Six minutes after the break, the host broke the deadlock after Abass Samari met a cross from Rashid Abubakar, leaving Kwame Baah rooted to his spot.

Accra Lions captain Dominic Nsobila nearly doubled the lead few minutes later, with his long range effort almost beating Kwame Baah. A mistake from the Nsobila saw Mbella rounding up Fredrick Asare but failed to stand his grounds, missing the ball.

The Porcupine Warriors piled pressure in the dying minutes, and a mistake in defence saw Kotoko taking advantage as Samuel Boateng netted the leveler.

Accra Lions held on to finish the campaign by holding the champions.

AshGold’s Yaw Annor equals Ishmael Addo’s record after winning goal king

AshantiGold forward Yaw Annor

AshantiGold forward Yaw Annor pipped Kotoko’s Mbella Etouga to the golden boot, matching Ishameal Addo’s famous Ghana Premier League record.

Annor scored twice in AshantiGold’s 2-2 draw with Bibini GoldStars. The goals were his 21st and 22nd of the season, beating the Cameroonian who scored 21 goals in his debut season.

Annor becomes the second player in Ghana Premier League history, after Hearts of Oak legend Ishmael Addo, to score 22 goals (most) in a single season.

During the 2001 Ghana Premier League season, Ishmael Addo scored 22 goals.

Yaw Annor’s first-half brace against Bibiani Gold Stars has thrown the record out of the window, bringing his season’s total to 22 goals.

AshantiGold end the season in 7th with 47 points, 20 points behind champions Asante Kotoko.

However, they are facing demotion to the Division Two League over match-fixing.

Speaker Bagbin Threatens Ofori-Atta

0
Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament and Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister for Finance

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to appear before the Parliament to respond to questions or forfeit doing business with the House.

He noted that, technically, ministers were mandated and empowered to present business before the Parliament, and the House could not refuse it, but can also refuse to do business with ministers, base on their posture.

“Until he comes to respond to the question, and to submit the statement giving explanations as to how that money has been applied, we will not entertain any business from that Ministry. Mark my words.”

“Technically, ministers are mandated and empowered to present business before the House, and the House cannot refuse it. That is it.

“But, it is a human institution; if you don’t give me the due respect; if you don’t see me as someone worthy of you doing business with, I can say that, well I will not allow you to come to do business with me.”

Mr. Bagbin’s comments comes after the Minority Caucus in Parliament complained about the Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta’s disregard for orders to appear before the House yesterday to give a statement on how Covid-19 funds were expended, as well as respond to sixteen questions from some members of Parliament.

The announcement of the Minister’s appearance in the House was done by the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, when he presented the Business Statement for the week.

But when the Order Paper for Thursday June 16, 2022 came out, the 16 questions were not on it. The paper, which outlines business for the day, did not also give any indication about the presentation of the statement on Covid-19 by the Minister.

Instead, two loan facilities, amounting to one billion dollars to finance capital growth related expenditures in the 2022 Budget, which was being requested by the Ministry, was featured.

This triggered concerns from the Minority side which pushed their First Deputy Chief Whip, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, to ask the Speaker to take action with regards to the Minister’s conduct.

Mr. Ahmed appealed to the Speaker to stand down the approval of the loan until Mr. Ofori-Atta appears before the House to do the needful.

In a quick response, the Majority Chief Whip, Mr. Frank Annor-Dompreh, indicated to the House that Mr. Ofori-Atta was not able to appear for a good reason, but had been rescheduled to appear next week Wednesday.

The Majority Leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, also indicated to the House that with regards to the Parliamentary questions, the Minister needed time to read through the questions that had been prepared by his technical team at the Ministry, hence, his inability to show up.

Despite these reasons given by the Majority Leader and the Chief Whip, Speaker Bagbin went ahead to reject doing business with the Minister until he appeared before the House.

The Speaker only allowed the Deputy Minister, Mr. John Apontuah-Kuma, to lay the paper on the $1 billion loan facility, but asked the Committee on Finance not to work on it until the Minister did the needful.

“I will rule that we will allow the laying of the paper. I will refer it to the Committee, and will direct the Committee not to consider the business until the Minister fulfills the request of the House.”

Speaker Bagbin also noted that his actions were not based only on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s absence in the House yesterday alone, but also as a result of the Minister not fulfilling previous summons to the House.

It will be recalled that on May 27 Speaker Bagbin gave similar directives to Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta to appear before the House and provide a detailed breakdown of all monies approved for spending during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Speaker’s directive followed a move by the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Kweku Kwarteng, to get the House to approve €75 million for the Covid-19 health response project. This was, however, resisted by the Minority.

The Speaker, after listening to the Minority’s argument, directed that the Finance Minister appears to give account and was, hence, scheduled to appear before the House, but refused to show up.

I kicked against Ato Essien’s GH¢27.5m biz promotion fund -MD

Reverend fitzgerald odonkor

The Managing Director of the defunct Capital Bank, Reverend Fitzgerald Odonkor, has told an Accra High Court that he protested against GH¢27.5 million that was given to the Founder of the bank, William Ato Essien, as business promotion.

According to Rev Odonkor, third accused (A3), who is being tried alongside Ato Essien and another, said he expressed serious concerns about the payment of business promotion because it was detrimental to the bank’s operations.

He said even though Capital Bank, which is currently in receivership, was operating normal at the time it received the liquidity support from the Central Bank, it was insolvent.

He told the court, presided over by a Court of Appeal Justice, Mr. Eric Kyei Baffour, that the then Capital Bank was struggling to pay customers their funds.

Rev Odonkor added that despite his misgivings, frustration and rejection of the idea of paying the GH¢27.5 million business promotion to Ato Essien, the Board of Directors still went ahead and approved the fund.

He indicated that after the approval, the Treasury Department sanctioned the payment of the colossal amount to Ato Essien, first accused (A1) in the trial.

The third accused (A3) in the case stated that he would not have sanctioned the payment of the business promotion if it had been any other person apart from the Chief Executive Officer of the bank.

Rev Odonkor further indicated to the court that during Board meetings he expressed similar sentiments of management about the utilisation of the liquidity support, but the advice fell on the rocks.

He said these concerns also encapsulated GH¢130 million placement that the Board approved for All Times Capital and Nordia Capital.

“Management was of the opinion that for the effective management of the liquidity support, it was not prudent to place GH¢30 million with Nordia Capital,” he indicated.

According to him, the defunct Capital Bank paid an amount of GH¢9.4 million as interest on the liquidity support to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and not GH¢900,000, as the court had been told.

The third accused also said he could not answer to the Treasury Department a GH¢35 million placement that Capital Bank made to Nordia Capital.

However, Baffoe Gyawu Bonsu, Counsel for Mr. Ato Essien, said one reason for A3 raising the concern was that he, as the Managing Director of the then Capital Bank, was of the view that because the Bank had liquidity challenges, it should refrain from any business promotion.

According to him, until 2019 that the Bank of Ghana outlawed business promotion it was a normal practice in the banking industry.

He continued that the liquidity support that was granted to the then Capital Bank was a commercial loan that the latter had to pay back to the Central Bank.

He further argued that Rev. Odonkor did not have any knowledge about the GH¢35 million placement to Nordia Capital, because that transaction never existed.

The Counsel also stated that Rev. Odonkor, as Managing Director, did not have the authority to consider and reconsider the quantum of business promotion to be paid if the Board of Capital Bank had approved of same.

“And because the Board had taken that decision, you, as the Managing Director, couldn’t have done otherwise,” to which A3 answered in the affirmative.

Mr. Gyawu Bonsu, who was cross-examining A3, further stated that Rev. Odonkor did not have any proof of his claim.

The court also dismissed an application made by Ato Essien for a stay of proceedings.

The application was about a pen drive containing an audio confrontation between Ato Essien and the investigation team, which had been admitted by the court.

Ato Essien had wanted to stay the High Court proceedings pending a determination by the Court of Appeal.

PR- Police Arrest Three Soldiers for Robbery

The emblem of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF)

PRESS RELEASE

Issued by the Public Relations Directorate General Head Quarters Burma Cam: Accra Tel: +233-544338030 Email: website-dpr@ghq.mail.gh  Release No: 12 Date: 16 June 2022

RE: POLICE ARREST 3 SOLDIERS FOR ROBBERY

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has monitored a misleading story in the Thursday 16 June 2022 edition of The Chronicle, with a banner headline falsely stating that three soldiers have been arrested by the Amasaman Police for robbery on Saturday 4 June 2022.

GAF wishes to state categorically that the Police has not made such an arrest. Though pictures of some three soldiers were depicted alongside the said story, the allegation of robbery has not been established against them. It is therefore premature for such conclusions to be drawn and for their pictures to have been put in the public domain.

It must be placed on record that following a complaint made by a Nigerian national and also based on a request by the Amasaman Police, GAF, through a picture, was able to identify one soldier and subsequently two colleagues who happened to be at Amasaman on the said date. They were invited by the Military Police on Friday 10 June 2022, to assist in investigations into an initial claim of seizure of phones, extortion and forced entry into a premise at Nsakina.

Based on this, the Military Police and Civil Police commenced joint investigation into the allegations. It is in view of this that the Military Police escorted the three soldiers to the Amasaman Police Station where they were compelled to avail themselves for their photographs to be taken as part of a routine investigation process. However these pictures have been released to The Chronicle and into the public domain alleging they were engaged in robbery when that fact has not been established.

From preliminary checks by the Military Police, the soldiers, one of whom has relatives in the area prone to robbers, claimed they monitored suspicious movements in a particular house while on a visit. They proceeded to the house and were ushered 1n willingly by an occupant. Upon entry, they noticed some Nigerians busily working on laptops. The leader of the group denied involvement in cyber fraud or any criminal activity but expressed readiness to report any such acts to the security services and therefore requested for the mobile number of one of the soldiers.

The allegation that the soldiers scaled a wall to seize mobile phones made by the Nigerian and as to whether the soldiers really extorted monies have been refuted by the soldiers. Nonetheless these allegations are being jointly investigated by the Military Police and the Civil Police and the truth yet to be ascertained. It is therefore unclear the motive of the haste in releasing such information with pictures into the public domain, on a yet to be determined matter.

The Ghana Armed Forces reiterates that it does not condone any such acts and wishes to assure the public that it will not shield any soldier engaged in any criminal activity. However it is prudent that the media and other stakeholders follow due process for the veracity of claims to be made to ensure accurate information is published.

GAF therefore wishes to urge The Chronicle and other media partners that its doors are open for the necessary clarification to ensure a balanced reportage at all times.

Editorial: Is Parliament not over pampering Adwoa Safo?

0
Editorial

The Ghanaian Times reported yesterday that the Privileges Committee of Parliament has caused to be published a summons to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, to appear before it on July 6, 2022.
The paper, however, quoted Adwoa Safo as saying on Joy FM that, “I am not aware of such an invitation to appear before the committee. I don’t know that I have been invited. I have to be served.”

But, Ms. Kate Addo, Director, Public Affairs, Parliament, who issued a statement to announce the invitation through newspaper publications, said all efforts to reach the MP to honour the invitation of the Committee had been fruitless.
“The Committee has employed all available means, both official and unofficial, to serve the Member with invitation letter, including sending the invitation letter to her office and pigeonhole in Parliament, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, where she superintended as Sector Minister, her official email addresses, known social media handles, and through her personal assistant,” Kate lamented.
It is instructive to note that the issue of Adwoa Safo absenting herself from Parliament started a year or so ago, and still there is no solution in sight. Even when the party she represents in the august House, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), wanted her badly to vote on the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) Bill, she turned her back on it.

And from that time up to date, she is reportedly sojourning in the United States of America and has refused to come down to perform her Parliamentary duties. The Chronicle, therefore, supports one hundred percent the move being made by the Privileges Committee to question the Legislator as to why she had been absenting herself from the performance of her Parliamentary duties.

If it had been reported that Adwoa Safo was on sick leave and that she would return to the country when her condition improves, nobody would have raised a finger. But, in this case, the Dome-Kwabenya MP is always seen on social media enjoying herself in the States. Clearly, some of the things she does on social media make us believe that her so-called sickness should not be part of the equation.

The Chronicle suggests that if after the publication of the invitation in the print media, Ms. Adwoa Safo still fails to avail herself to the Privileges Committee, payment of her emoluments, if not already suspended, should immediately be suspended. If this does not push her to report to work, then she should be sacked and her seat declared vacant.

In our opinion, the people of Dome-Kwabenya did not get the vote for her to stay in far away US. Parliament must set an example by declaring the seat vacant to serve as a deterrent to MPs who may think of following her bad example in future.

Letter to senior Opupulepu (190) Paapa Judge, Please I Be Born Again!

0
Opinion

Dear Senior Opupulepu,

How are you do? I hope you are do fine, fine. As me and all born-agains, we are all do fine, fine.

Senior, I believe you know Wofa Nicodemus, well, well. You must know him, since by your current age you are closer to him and so you and Wofa Nicodemus can be shordies.

Senior, this Wofa Nicodemus, broke lights-out rules and visited Yesu Christus Emmanuel in anadwodaaesum, as in night-sleep-inside-darkness.

Senior, he was even in head mask, face mask and nose mask, all worn together so that he would never be identified. When he got into Yesu Christus Emmanuel’s compound, he was lucky Wofa Thomas was not on guard duty at that time, or he would have doubted Wofa Nicodemus’ reasons for that late night visit.

Senior, this our Wofa Nico had brought alone with him, the passports of himself, his wife and his children, with something small in a black polythene bag, begging Yesu Christus Emmanuel for visa connections to Heaven.

Senior, Yesu Christus Emmanuel, who is a very honest and principled man, and thus cannot be bribed or receive bribes, gently, returned the gifts and passports and told Wofa Nico that he did not need visa or even passport if he wanted to go to Heaven. He was only to be born again.

Senior, Wofa Nico, screamed saying how could it be possiblefor a full-grown mosquito like him, to crawl back into his mother’s womb to be born-again.

Senior, since generations from Wofa Nico’s time, no one, in fact, in no village has there been any recording of someone who was born-again.

Senior, it was only yesterday, that things happened in Ogyakrom again, and this time, there is the documentary evidence that an adult full-grown mosquito of a human being has been physically born-again.

Senior, that Municipal Police called Madam Toffee of the Jamboree kiosk, has proven, by way of DNA, forensic audit, polygraph examination, biometrics, swearing before a no-nonsense deity, that she was born-again. Indeed, she was.

Senior, but WHOW! Combining WHAT and HOW! It was proven in the presence of one of those old folks who sit on benches doing nothing that when Madam Tofee was first born, she promised on her honour to be loyal and faithful, to Yahweh, her Lord God.But as she was growing and started having breasts on her chest, her character was a characteristic to be compared to Wofa Sasabosam’s last born, the baby last and dada baa in that family.

Senior, Madam Toffee’s mother who was the women’s fellowship leader in the Church, started serious fasting and prayer sections and one day while she was very weak out of hunger, she prayed begging Yesu Christus Emmanuel for the redemption of her daughter, Madam Toffee.

Senior, crying and weeping, she asked Yesu Christus Emmanuel, how her only begotten daughter, Madam Toffee can also enter into the Kingdom of Yahweh, some.

Senior, Yesu Christus Emmanuel cried out in response, “Verily, Verily and Amen, Amen, I say unto you, unless she is born-again.”

Senior, this loving mother, went all out to make it possible for her wayward daughter, Madam Toffee to crawl back into her womb and at the appointed time, she was born-again. She alone, has two birthdays, born in two different years and in two different villages. She alone is one of the only kind, in the whole of ewiase.

Senior, Madam Toffee was at first born in Martey-Korle’s hole in the KpakpoShito district of Ogyakrom. Then, due to the need for her to make it to Yahweh’s kingdom, by fire by force, her mother went to the village where ivory is as common as sand at the seashore, and open her stomach, push her inside and kept her there under lock and key for nine moons, before letting her out.

Senior, as she stood in front of that old folk who just sit on benches doing practically nothing, it dawned on the old folk that he must awaken from the lazy siesta and start doing something, in fact he must start thinking since the last time he ever did any thinking was in primary school when he was forced to figure out the result of adding one and one together.

Senior, standing in front of him, was someone born twice, on two different days, in two different years, genuinely celebrates her birthday twice a year, has two different boyfriends, who are known to each other and are very best of friends, and looking forward to marrying these two different men at the same time. This has never happened in Ogyakrom before, but today it is happening life. And from the Umbrella clan, where else? These people never cease to amaze.

Senior, if, indeed, this Madam Toffee, is in fact the unholy duality, then why should she settle for only one kiosk? Why the Jump-Roll, aka Jamboree kiosk, alone. She should have been representing another kiosk in addition. What is she and the Umbrella clan up to? I think this is the reason they dragged her to see that old folk who was just sitting on a bench doing nothing and thinking nothing.

Senior, Ogyakrom is now in the Guinness Bottle of Stout Beer inside, setting record as the only place where Yesu Christus Emmanuel’s decree that if one wants a free passage to Yahweh’s Kingdom, then he or she born-again, has physically and actually materialised.

Senior, if I were you, I will make Madam Toffee my paddy, so that when she gets to Yahweh’s Kingdom, she should arrange a place for me.

Senior, I am Dan, sorry I am done.

It’s me!

Kamal Gumah guns for NPP National Youth Organiser

0
Kamal Gumah in a picture with some supporters or the NPP

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gear up for its National Executives Elections, one position to look out for is that of National Youth Organiser, which is expected to be keenly contested. The incumbent, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), will not be standing, leaving the race open for the new contestants.

Prince Kamal Gumah stands tall among his fellow contestants to capture the position to be able to marshal the youth wing of the party.

Prince Kamal Gumah has declared his intention to lead the youth of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2024 General Elections, where he hopes to organise the youth to retain political power for the governing party.

In a press briefing to outline his objectives to delegates of the NPP last Tuesday in Accra, he stated his bid to lead the youth into the next elections, as the party seeks a historic third mandate from the good people of Ghana, which agenda he dubbed ‘Breaking the 8’.

According to him, he had submitted his nominations at the National Headquarters of the party, which formed a formal declaration of his intention to contest the position of National Youth Organiser of the NPP.

According to Prince Kamal Gumah, he had travelled the 16 regions of this country, touching base with party faithful, in particular the youth.

“After listening to the many concerns of the teeming youth of our party, I am convinced that, indeed, the party requires a person of not just my experience and capabilities, but my character and integrity, to lead the charge into Elections 2024, God willing,” he stated.

Prince Kamal Gumah said his agenda was to ‘Re-Energise the Youth’ for victory in 2024 and beyond.

“We must re-energise the party if we are to break the 8. This forms the heart of our agenda for the youth wing,” he asserted.

Prince Kamal Gumah added that his three-point agenda to ‘Re-Energise’ the party were anchored on “Opportunities and Resources, Training and Capacity Building and Welfare.”

It is in this light that he disclosed that he had 10 policies aimed at achieving the above:

First is to “Institute a programme to ensure that jobs go directly to the Constituency Youth Organisers for the benefit of registered youth and youth groups at the grassroots level.

Secondly, to advocate and lobby for youth organisers representation on decentralised systems for the benefit of registered party youth.

Also, to make budgetary allocation for regional and constituency youth wing programmes and activities.

He also wants to institute measures to make TESCON and other youth volunteer groups more vibrant with a focus on recruitment, training and capacity building, as well as volunteerism.

Prince Kamal Gumah said he would facilitate the construction of a permanent National Youth Secretariat among other objectives.

He concluded by saying, he was convinced that with this 10-point agenda, spearheaded by himself, and with a record of resourcefulness, hard work and integrity, the youth of the party would be adequately energised for victory in 2024 and beyond.
