Why people crave for khebab after a heavy night drinking

Khebab

Ever wondered why you always crave a cheeky late-night kebab after a heavy night of drinking?

Well, scientists might finally have come up with an answer. Australian researchers say alcohol ups levels of a hormone in your body that makes you crave protein.

Most of the almost 4,000 drinkers studied chose to fill their desire with lean meats, fish and nuts.

But a third instead opted for ‘protein decoys’, which could include the greasy kebab and chips that’s become a staple of a modern British night out.

Crisps, sausage rolls and garlic bread are other examples of the calorific snacks.

The foods all give the protein-like umami taste but are actually low in protein, hence the nickname.

University of Sydney researchers have now urged all drinkers to stick to lean meats, chicken, fish and legumes when they inevitably get hungry.

Lead author Dr Amanda Grech said: ‘Avoid the urge to snack on low-protein, savoury snack foods.

‘This will ensure your protein appetite is satisfied without over-consuming energy, leading to weight gain.’

Suggested snacks included a 40g serving of cheese, unsalted nuts, chickpeas, and vegetable sticks with a tzatziki or hummus dip made with fresh ingredients.

She added: ‘Above all, be sure to stick within the guidelines for alcohol intake, which poses health risks other than weight gain and obesity.’

UK health chiefs advise Britons to drink no more than 14 units per week — around six pints of beer or 10 small glasses of wine.

Drinking too much alcohol for many years can raise the risk of high blood pressure, strokes, liver disease and some cancers, as well as dementia.

The study, to be presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Melbourne, used data on 9,341 Australian adults who took part in a 24-hour nutrition survey that tracked their drinking habits and dietary preferences in that day.

Of the adults taking part, 40 per cent reported consuming alcohol that day.

Unsurprisingly, the analysis showed people who had consumed alcohol consumed more savoury foods than those who didn’t drink.

But what was surprising is that some drinkers ended up consuming far more calories than others.

Two-thirds of drinkers chose foods high in proteins but low in carbohydrate and fat, like lean meats, poultry, seafood, nuts, and beans.

These drinkers consumed 1,749 calories on average, roughly 577 calories below the amount needed for an adult to maintain their weight. This included calories from the alcohol.

Drinkers who opted for ‘protein decoys’ consumed 3,051 calories on average, 813 more than their daily requirement.

Dr Grech added: ‘It’s known alcohol increases appetite, particularly for savoury food, a phenomenon that’s known as the “apertif effect”.

‘Recent research has shown levels of FGF-21, a hormone that increases protein appetite and suppresses appetite for sweetness, increase after alcohol is consumed.

‘It’s also known that protein has a satiating effect.’

Juventus thump Empoli to close gap on top-4

Juventus beat Empoli

Juventus closed the gap on the Serie A top six with a thumping 4-0 win over Empoli at the Allianz Stadium.

Goals from Moise Kean and Weston McKennie on eight and 56 minutes gave the hosts a healthy lead, and Adrien Rabiot added two as four proved the difference in an otherwise drab affair that lacked any real clear-cut chances.

Up to seventh, the Old Lady secured two successive victories for the first time this term as Empoli, labelled a tricky test in the build-up, struggled to trouble the hosts.

Now, after two good wins against city rivals Torino and here against Empoli, Juventus have reacted well after their 2-0 defeat to Milan. They must now use these victories as a foundation to kick on and challenge at the top again, as the pressure on Allegri subsides.

Messi and Mbappé magic win day for PSG

Messi and Mbappé score.

PSG travelled to Corsica without suspended pair Neymar Jr. and Sergio Ramos, but they still put a strong team out at the Stade François Coty.

PSG made it 1-0, with Messi slipping Mbappé through who then made no mistake for his ninth goal of the campaign. Mbappé should have doubled his and his side’s tally soon after when he was teed up by Achraf Hakimi, but his finish let him down and it was 1-0 at the break.

The start of the second half saw PSG pull further clear, as Mbappé returned the favour to set up Messi with a backheel, the Argentina skipped past Leroy, and it was 2-0.

Mbappé then completed the scoring when he and Messi exchanged roles, steering home from close range.

Messi is aging like a fine wine in France after a difficult first season with Paris, and now has six goals and nine assists in Ligue 1.

Fiorentina, Inter Milan in seven-goal thriller

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez set up the opening goal and scored two of his own as his side beat Fiorentina 4-3 in Serie A on Saturday in a thrilling game.

Martinez doubled the lead after 15 minutes with a superb solo effort when he ran into the box, dribbled past defender Lucas Martinez Quarta and calmly sent the ball into the bottom corner.

Fiorentina reduced the deficit in the 33rd minute when Arthur Cabral converted a penalty before Jonathan Ikone equalised for the home side with a beautifully curled shot into the top corner on the hour mark. Martinez put Inter back into the lead from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute before Luka Jovic again levelled the scores in the 90th minute.

Five minutes into stoppage time, Henrikh Mkhitaryan secured the win for the visitors when he scored from a failed clearance by defender Lorenzo Venuti.

Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi scored his first league goal for AC Milan as they thrashed Monza to move up to second in Serie A. On-loan Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz opened the scoring from long range before turning in Origi’s pass before the break.

Origi fired into the top corner just after an hour but Filippo Ranocchia got one back with a free kick. Portugal’s Rafael Leao added a fourth for Milan late on.

The win moves the defending champions behind leaders Napoli on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Lautaro Martinez scored twice as Inter Milan beat Fiorentina 4-3 in a thrilling game.

Nicolo Barella opened the scoring when he ran through on goal before slotting in.

Martinez made it 2-0 with a superb solo effort but Arthur Cabral halved the deficit with a penalty before Jonathan Ikone equalised with a curled finish.

Martinez restored Inter’s lead from the penalty spot but Luka Jovic again levelled the scores in the 90th minute.

However, deep in stoppage time Henrikh Mkhitaryan secured the win for the visitors when he pounced on a poor clearance.

Late goals help Real Madrid extend lead

Uruguay midfielder Fede Valverde sealed Real Madrid's win with a wonderful strike

Real Madrid showed again why they are the dominant side in La Liga as two late goals ended the resistance of visitors Sevilla. The reigning champions were set to drop points for only the second time this season before substitute Lucas Vazquez and Fede Valverde secured victory.

Luka Modric tapped in an early opener for the hosts before Sevilla’s Erik Lamela slid in a second-half equaliser.

The Catalan club might have thought they could get even closer to their rivals with 10 minutes left at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

But a triple substitution from Carlo Ancelotti proved inspired and enabled Los Blancos to earn their 10th win in 11 La Liga games this season.

Moments after coming on, Marco Asensio started the move which fellow newcomer Vazquez slotted in for the second.

That lifted the Madrid players and the home crowd, with the renewed confidence illustrated by Uruguay midfielder Valverde slamming an angled drive past Sevilla keeper Bono.

I Did Not Call The Bluff Of Kwabre People; Says Akufo-Addo

Mr. Eugene Arhin addressing the Presidential Press Corps yesterday

Jubilee House has clarified the statement President Akufo-Addo made about the people of Kwabre in the Ashanti region this week, during his tour.

According to the Director of Communications (DoC) at the Presidency, Mr. Eugene Arhin, contrary to the misinterpretation given to the statement, President Akufo-Addo did not “call the bluff,” of the people.

In an interview with the Presidential Press Corps yesterday, Mr. Eugene Arhin explained that the President indicated that his focus was to fulfil his promises, but the decision to vote is with the citizens.

“I don’t think the President was calling anybody’s bluff. The host asked him a particular question and the response the President gave was to what the host was saying. Indeed, if you look at the package of road construction that is currently going on in the Kwabre and the Manso areas, I mean, what the President stated in his response was that I don’t think anybody threatening that I will not vote for him should be something that he should be worried about.

“At the end of the day, his focus is to make sure that he delivers. Once he delivers and the road infrastructure is there and you still decide to go and vote for another party, that is your problem,” Eugene noted.

He continued, “What he did indicate in that interview was that work is ongoing in all parts of the country. There is no way we can construct all roads at the same time. It is not possible, looking at the national purse. So, if people, as per what the host was saying, will not be patient and wait for their time, that is fine, but he did not call anybody’s bluff.”

He stated that the government will soon award about 10 km of road projects in the Kwabre and Manso areas, stressing that, due to constraints on the national purse, all roads cannot be constructed at a go.

THE TOUR

In the interview, the Director of Communications gave a general assessment of the President’s tour of the Ashanti Region.

He indicated that the 4-day visit gave the President another opportunity to take a good look at what his administration has been doing since he last visited the region last year.

He was positive that the amount of work being done by the central government in the region was “massive and I believe the President has left the region with a good impression.”

The DoC cited the sod cutting for the construction of an interchange at Suame. He recalled that on his tour last year, the President promised that in the course of this year, work would begin on the Suame interchange, but did not go into detail.

However, while cutting sod for work to start, the President told the people it would be a 4-tier interchange, like that of the Pokuase interchange.

However, the various configurations associated with the Suame interchange literally make it a six-in-one-tier interchange, he added.

BOOING

Commenting on the viral video of the President’s convoy being booed in the region, Eugene Arhin indicated that the entourage were taken aback.

According to him, he and the President did not hear the booing, but it came to his attention after the tour.

Meanwhile, he stated that the President is unfazed by the situation as he is operating in a democracy.

Eugene gave a scenario that in the last elections, the NDC had about 500,000 votes, indicating they have supporters, “so we are not daunted by that at all.”

EASTERN TOUR

The President is commencing a 3-day tour of the Eastern Region from today. During the interview, Mr. Arhin stated that his boss was going to look at the work being done in the region.

He said three main areas are dominant in the President’s itinerary, namely education, roads and industry.

The President will be commissioning a number of educational infrastructure projects, inspect ongoing road projects, and commissioning some factories under the One District, One Factory initiative.

ECONOMY

Responding to a question on how the President is taking the seeming tension over hardship in the country, Mr. Arhin said President Akufo-Addo appreciates the current difficulties.

However, the President is very optimistic about a turn around in no time, considering the measures put in place.

Suicide is not an answer to economic hardship -JM

John Dramani Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has advised the public, particularly individuals feeling the pinch of the current the economic hardship, not to despair but remain steadfast, as “suicide is never the answer.”

Although Mr. Mahama said he appreciates the current economic challenge as dire and probably the worse since 1992, taking one’s life as a protest against the situation should not be contemplated.

He made the statement on his Facebook wall and other social media handles on Wednesday, following the death of a 24-year-old man, Kofi Kakra, who climbed an electricity pylon at Kasoa to commit suicide in protest against the economic hardship.

According to reports, the young man, who is a bus conductor, prior to his death, was alleged to be complaining about the general economic difficulties and other life struggles.  On October 14, he decided to take his life to end it all on the electricity pylon.

However, the former President, in the social media post, stated: “I returned from a trip to hear the sad news of Kakra, who killed himself by electrocution.

“The current level of hardships in Ghana is dire, and probably the worst we have ever experienced in the last three decades, but suicide is never the answer.

“Even in the darkest night, there will come the dawn. The sun will rise again. Let’s be each other’s keeper. Let’s keep hope alive,” he urged.

Kwasi Kwarteng will not go down alone; Brits truss Truss

Truss and the former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng

British Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced she will stand down as leader of the Conservative party, just six weeks after she was appointed, after her policies triggered economic turmoil and sharply divided the party. Truss had last week fired Kwasi Kwarteng, her finance minister, after a disastrous financial plan caused turmoil on the markets. But Kwasi Kwarteng will not go down alone.

Speaking outside her Downing Steet office on Thursday, Truss accepted that she could not deliver the promises she made when she was running for Conservative leader, having lost the faith of her party.

The Conservative party will hold a leadership election within the next week to replace Truss, who is the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.

The opposition Labour party called for an immediate general election.“We need a general election — now,” the opposition leader said in a statement.
