Installation Of New Konongohene Challenged

0
Nana Otuo Serebour II - Juabenhene
Late Nana Batafo Acheampong Nti – Konongohene

The Judicial Committee of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs has been petitioned over the enstoolment of Dr. Albert Awuah Jnr, as the new Konongohene, under the stool name of Nana Dr. Awuah Abedimsa II.

The former Coordinator of the World Bank initiated Urban IV project was enstooled the new chief of Konongo, following the demise of Nana Batafo Akyeampong Nti II, the Konongohene, thus rendering the Asonastool of Konongo vacant, since January 15, 2022.

Nana Otuo Serebuor II, Juabenhene, Nana Oppong Agyare and Mr Kwabena Dapaah Gyasi, have been named as the Co-respondents in the matter before the Judicial Committee.

The petition filed on October 17, 2022 by Augustine Opoku, Esq of Dwumfuor and Dwumfuor Chambers, on behalf of Nana Obrane Frimpong,Twafohene of Konongo and Kwame Atta Kakra, a member of the royal Asona family and a nephew of the late chief, contend that the installation ofDr. Awuah (the fourth Respondent) on August 22, 2022 at Juaben in Ashanti is a nullity and wrong.

The Petitioners are seeking eight reliefs, including a declaration that the rights of the applicants to be heard was breached and that the May 31, 2022 meeting at Juaben, presided over by the Juabenhene, Nana Otuo Serebuor, was not the appropriate legal forum to determine matters

affecting the status of chiefs in the Juaben Traditional Council, under the 1992 Constitution and the Chieftaincy Act.

Other reliefs or remedies being sought by the applicants are a declaration that no person has the jurisdiction and authority to make destoolment charges against a deceased chief, who was never charged or tried in his lifetime; a declaration that the purporteddestoolment of the late Konongohene and his sub-chiefs is null and void, and of no legal and customary effect.

Dr. Albert Awuah Jnr.

The  Applicants are also seeking  an order  setting  aside the unlawful act of the declaration of destoolment of the deceased, Nana Batafo Acheampong Nti II, and his sub chiefs and the

consequential orders.

They also want the Judicial Committee to prohibit the Respondents and their agents form usurping the traditional functions of the Konongo sub-chiefs and interfering with the burial and funeral rites of the late chief and a further order to restraining the Juabenhene from interfering with the funeral celebration of the late Konongohene.

Nana Obrane Frimpong, Twafohene of Konongo and Kwame Atta Kakra, also sought a declaration that without the involvement of the Konongo kingmakers, the nomination and installation of the fourth respondentas, the chief of Konongo is a nullity and that a proper process has to be restarted.

The Applicants, per their 10-page petition argued that the Judicial Committee of the Juaben  Traditional Council, properly constituted, is the only appropriate legal body to hear, adjudicate  and determine matters affecting chieftaincy within the Juaben Council and the 1992 constitution  and the Chieftaincy Act and Regulations and not a chief sitting in his palace.

They said the Juabenhene could, therefore, not destool posthumously are cognized and gazetted chief who reigned from May 1981 to January 15, 2022 and should be accorded all the royal rites and protocols of a late chief.

Explaining their position further, the Applicants reacted to the argument by the Juabenhene that he litigated with the late Konongohene describing it as untenable because from 1907 to 1954 and again in 2009, there has been over six cases in court, initiated by successive chiefs of Juaben from Nana Kofi Boaten to Nana Otuo Serebour II against the Konongo stool, but in all those cases the Juaben stool lost.

They explained that all the causes of the said  litigation have been due to the claim by the Juaben stool and its attempt to expropriate Konongo Stool lands and mining royalties through various surrogate sand attempts to totally humiliate Konongo Chiefs, who they claim to be their chattel that they bought for €30 (predawn) from a certain Oyokohene in the early part of the 18th century, which claim is disputed because it is not verified as found at page 179 in the book “Rattrays Ashanti Laws and Constitution”, as told by the Juaben chiefs without any research or cross checking.

The Applicants further explained that the late chief was also sued by the Juabenhene at the Ashanti Regional House of Chief in the year 2004 as chief of Konongo and swore an affidavit to that effect, which caserun through to the National House of Chiefs on the installation of the

Konongo Queen mother and also litigated with him over Konongo stool land leases and royalties, which cases brought bad blood between the two chiefs.

According to the Twafohene of Konongo and his Co-applicant, some of those suits are still pending in court and that the Juabenhene is just using his authority to punish and humiliate the late chief, even in death, for resisting his attempts to allegedly sell Konongo stoollands without his consent and sign Konongo leases Acts, frowned upon by the High Court, which ruling was that the Overlord cannot sell or sign Konongo leases that had not first been signed by a Konongo chief.

He said based on the Supreme Court ruling in BOAMPONG vs. ABOAGYE AND

OTHERS [1981] GLR 927-943 that Juaben Stool cannot destool a KonongoChief in Juaben and that it is only the Konongo Kingmakers who candestool a Chief at Konongo, and that the events at Juaben on May 31,2022 was a nullity and an attempt through the backdoor to reverse trite customary traditions, usages and judicial decisions.

Following the above contentions, the Petitioners assert that Nana Batafo Akyeampong Nti II died as chief of Konongo and should be laid to rest as a chief, with all the royal courtesies and protocols as supported by previous decisions by Asanteman Council and the Courts, that a chief or sub-chief cannot be destooled if they have not been found guilty of any wrong doing.

The Applicants contended that even though he is the paramount chief of the traditional council, the Juabenhene sitting in his palace is not clothed with the authority of a judicial committee of a traditional council, which processes and proceedings are regulated by law and the rules of natural justice, adding that being the chair of the Council of State did not grant him the right to deviate from statutory and customary law.

They also referred to the ruling of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the case of Ohenenana Akwasi Prempeh versus Nana Juabenhene held at Manhyia Palace by the Asanteman Council on April 23, 2012.

Which said in part that “the authority that a chief is nominated and installed in Juaso, swears his oath of allegiance to his subjects in Juaso, before being sent to Juaben to swear his oath to Juabenhene is the case and not vice versa,” for which reason BarimaSafrotwie Sarpong II’s installation as chief of Juaso was nullified.

The Petitioners stated that the funeral of the late chief of Konongo has since stalled, as the Petitioners and the Konongo Asona Royals and family have no access to the palace to conduct the funeral of the late chief as required by customary practice and usage, because the palace has been locked up by the respondents.

How menopause really affects women

0
Menopause signs and symptoms

Menopause is a turning point in every woman’s life. Falling hormone levels cause a variety of life-changing symptoms, ranging from the tell-tale hot flushes, brain fog and forgetfulness to depression.

Q&A: When does menopause start, what are the symptoms and what can you do about it?

When do women typically start to experience menopause?

Typically women will start the menopause in their late 40s and 50s typically. Some women can experience what we call an early menopause from the age of 45. But any younger that would be very unusual. So typically around late 40s, fifties.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

It will be different for every woman. Because of the production of estrogen and progestogen changing at that time — that’s typically what causes the symptoms.

Regular symptoms that you will hear people talking about are hot flushes and that’s quite common.

‘Some women find that sleeping is a little bit more difficult and also mood swings is a common symptom that we hear about.

A loss of libido and vaginal dryness is very common as well. But as I say, every woman has their own experience. Typically they would be the the most common symptoms that we would come across.

What can women do to cope with hot flushes and mood swings?

With hot flushes there’s some just really simple advice around.  Wearing layers and cotton clothing rather than big chunky jumpers.

Hot flushes tend to happen very unexpectedly and quite quickly, so being able to kind of take a layer off when you’re feeling hot and then put it back on again it’s quite useful. And also if you’re sitting at a desk regularly you can get desk fans and handheld fans which are quite quite handy.’

Mood swings will vary from woman to woman because their hormones are unstable and are changing. It’s not unusual to feel at low mood and some people describe brain fog and finding it difficult to concentrate and remember certain things. That’s that’s not unusual.

What other treatments can women have?

There’s lots of treatments available through your GP, including hormone replacement therapy, which can help some women if it’s appropriate for them.So it’s definitely worth talking to your GP about what’s available. And sometimes it takes a little bit of time to find the treatment that works best for you.

‘HRT is a replacement hormonal therapy. So that just corrects the balance of hormones, which in turn supports like most of the symptoms.

Again it’s a very individual experience, the menopause, but some of those supplements and herbal medicines can also really support people through the symptoms.

Does the menopause effect sexual intercourse?

Absolutely. I think it’s not uncommon to for women’s libido to drop during the menopause and that can be quite disturbing for many women. It’s quite common also to have a vaginal dryness which can make intercourse quite uncomfortable, which again impacts on sexual intercourse on relationships.

There are various treatments and locally applied gels that can really help with the dryness.

What piece of advice can you give women who are worried about it?

Menopause is a is a is a natural thing. It’s comes to all of us women at a certain point in time and I think now more than ever, women are talking about it.

Men are talking about it and and I think it’s a really positive step forward. It’s a stage of life where times are changing.

Your periods stop and it’s quite often a time when women reassess where they are in life and think about their careers. And often the time when there might have an empty nest and it’s almost a bit of a turning point for women to step into the next stage.

How do you know if you’ve reached menopause if you’re on the pill?

It was very difficult to know if you’re taking a contraceptive pill because obviously it is a hormone is a hormone treatment in itself. And so therefore the only real way to find out would be to stop using the contraceptive pill and switch to a barrier method and see what’s happening with your normal regular natural cycle.

Feature: Shall We Tell the President, About Freddy Blay?

0
Feature

Those who know the relationship between these two gentlemen, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo and Hon. Freddy Blay, can testify that they are good buddies from a long time.

Freddy helped out his friend a lot, with essential gifts during the dark days of Ghana, in the early eighties, when Rawlings gate crashed into governance again.

But Freddy Blay is a die-hard Nkrumaist and Nana Addo professes the UP Tradition. That can be the only difference between them, that is unless Nana Addo was once a socialist and had partnered with Freddy, until he saw the light and got converted.

With this great bond of friendship came the political rise of Freddy Blay in this country. Even though he stood on CPP ticket, he could only get into Parliament, when the NPP decided not to contest his Ellembelle seat.

In the 1996, no NPP member contested Freddy Blay, and he won the seat by eleven votes. In 2000, NPP again did not contest and Freddy Blay was re-elected with 13,772 votes.

In 2004, NPP again did not put up a candidate and Freddy Blay was again re-elected with 18,428 votes.

In the Fourth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Freddy Blay was made the First Deputy Speaker with total support from the NPP MPs who had absolute majority in Parliament.

As things stood, Freddy Blay started tilting towards the NPP, maybe because his bosom friend, the current president, was leader.

In his CPP, he was accused among two others and branded a traitor, for publicly showing allegiance to the UP Tradition during election campaigns.  About to be sacked from his party, he took the wisest decision.

Instead of tainting his political CV with dismissal boldly imprinted in prime space, Freddy Blay resigned from the party, CPP, in March 2011 and joined the NPP.

Freddy Blay’s political career grew leaps and bounds when in April 2014, he was elected as the First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the Tamale Congress. He could not have gotten that position in a minor party like the CPP, so to be one in a major party like NPP, was beyond his dreams.

And considering the minimum four years required before a new member could take up leadership position, there was a waiver for Freddy to contest a national executive position.

On Friday October 23, 2015, Freddy Blay became acting national chairman when Chairman Afoko was suspended. Freddy Blay, for the first time in his life was going to lead a party and a major one as such, to General Elections.

Instead of returning this unexpected gesture from the NPP, which he did not deserve, Freddy Blay, spat on the face of his new party. He used his paper, Daily Guide, to run full page adverts for the opposition NDC throughout the 2016 Elections Campaign.

He rose to defend his deed, but perception is every thing in politics. Why would a member of one political party, campaign for another party and be expected to be called a true member? Did the president not notice this about his old-time friend? Shall we tell the president?

As acting chairman, Freddy Blay was appointed board chairman of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in 2017 and was reappointed again in 2021.

The NPP has been a blessing to Freddy Blay and his family, with his wife appointed Ghana’s ambassador to Germany.

During the July 2018 Party Conference, Freddy Blay was elected, national chairman.

Unfortunately, Freddy Blay ushered the party into a period when its pride went low. In the 2016 Elections, using the well laid out plan Afoko, Crabbe and Agyepong had laid out, Freddy Blay led the NPP to victory and take over 61.4% of Parliament.

Comparatively, in 2000 when NPP first won elections it took 50% of Parliament. In 2004, NPP got re-elected and controlled 55.6% of the House, up 11.2%.

NPP took 2016 by storm and with H.E. President Akufo-Addo flagship social interventions programmes, 2020 looked like it would be the burial of NDC in Parliament.Going by 2004 statistics, the NPP would capture at least 187 seats, up 11.2% on seats won in 2016, with the NDC holding on to at most 88 seats.

But that was not to be. Under Freddy Blay, NPP went bonkers. In his administration, this noble party lost the respect it had.

Party foot soldiers and very active members who fought to make it regain power, were told that they do not deserve to be acknowledged, because of what is termed political neutralisation.

These party diehards witnessed benefits and rewards rightly due to them been given to the people of other parties in their communities who always fought against the NPP.

Infighting was the order of the day and with imposition of parliamentary candidates on constituencies and the undermining of MPs who were seeking re-elections, the NPP turned out with the worse results ever in the Fourth Republican history of elections that a sitting president sought re-election.

In the end the NPP lost thirty-two seats to split Parliament with the NDC winning thirty-one and a rejected stone from the NPP winning the other.NPP’s humiliation was compounded when the entire leadership had to fall on their knees and beg Fomena MP, Hon Asiamah to forgive and forget and come back home.

Under Freddy Blay, the internal wranglings in the NPP exploded in the open when the hitherto unnoticed polling station executive elections exploded out in blazes in 2022, rivalling the Russia-Ukraine war.

Never was bloodsplit in any internal contest within the NPP, until CPP Freddy Blay came to take over leadership. When he came to talk on the issues, instead of coming out with a peace plan, he rather extended the period of nomination, so that the conflicts could continue.

In the 2022 NPP Conference, Freddy Blay stepped down as chairman, however, as a former chairman, he has a seat on the party’s National Council, where he would have a say in any discussions and decisions the party will have and take on any matter, internal, national and international.

All the same the party heaved a sigh of relief, with Freddy Blay, now no longer in charge. But unfortunately, Freddy Blay did not entirely leave the scene. He came back, this time in full battle cry to defy his bosom friend and destroy what the president is determined to restore in the country. The galamsey pandemic.

With the destruction of land and water bodies escalating in leaps and bounds due to this illegal and unregulated form of mining, H.E. President Nana Akufo-Addo is determined to restore sanity in mining and restore our water bodies and arable lands to normalcy.

Foreigners who strictly respect their countries’ environmental laws have taken over our forests with one ambition, to destroy our environment in search of gold.

Ghanaians who are greedy and irresponsible collect a mere pittance and sell our heritage. In the end, we end up enriching other nationals while we get poorer and poorer.

This illegal and unregulated mining going on in this country with such impunity, is sooner than later going to end us where El Salvador got to, before it placed an outright ban on all forms of mining. The question is, can Ghana survive with 90% of its fresh water bodies and 50% of arable lands polluted with toxic chemicals?

As the leader of this nation, H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, put his presidency on the line and resolved to put an end to the illegal and unregulated mining going on in this country. Soon some foreign nationals were arrested and put before the courts.

All was going on coolly when Hon Freddy Blay appeared on the scene as a lawyer, not to persecute the nation wreckers but to defend them. Freddy Blay tells us that he was going to prove that his clients were innocent and maybe someone was suffering from optical illusion, thought he saw his clients at the galamsey sites. Moreover, all Chinese look the same to Ghanaians.

All jokes, apart Freddy Blay has no right going this length, because of the position he holds in society and the fact that, his bosom friend’s political career and responsibility to the nation depend on, among others, halting galamsey in Ghana and returning this land into the lush greenery of vegetation in our ecosystem.

Freddy Blay is a lawyer and he has the right to represent anyone at all in court. However, someone who can be classified among those who are held high in society, he should have recused himself from this case.

What will he say at a National Council meeting, discussing galamsey and how to end it?And what advice can he give the president, his bosom friend,on this matter?

With the heights he had achieved in this country, Ghanaians havein him, someone who is supposed to defend this country and protect her from nation wreckers and foreign cartels whose agenda is to reap this country off, all its resources and riches.

Unfortunately, with all that Ghana has given and is giving to him, Hon Freddy Blay has collected money from the very people who want to wreck this country.

H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo must be a very sad man, because his very bosom friend who he so much love and trust, has chosen money over him and he is challenging him in court against his stance on galamsey. But shall we tell this to the president?

Wait, ever since Nkrumah was overthrown, the Nkrumaists have wrongly blamed the UP for making that possible and deep inside their hearts they would wish the UP Tradition disappears from the surface of this world.

Hon Freddy Blay may have the desire to achieve this and entered the NPP to collapse it from within.

Because when he was national chairman of the NPP he led the party to an abysmal performance at the polls.

He watched as the party was torn apart with nasty fights and reducing it to a batch of drunken pirates fighting over a loot. And when he came out to speak, he did not volunteer solutions.

In cases, where elders would recuse themselves, Hon Freddy Blay is standing tall and defending foreign invaders who sort to attack and sack this country.

Shall we tell the president, about Hon. Freddy Blay?

Today’s Group Stage Champions League Fixtures & Previews

0
Salzburg vs Chelsea

Salzburg host Chelsea in cliff-hanger Group E tie

Only 90 minutes could separate Chelsea from a place in the Champions League knockout stages, as the Blues travel to face Red Bull Salzburg in Group E on Tuesday night.

Graham Potter‘s men sit at the top of the section on seven points, while their Austrian hosts sit one place and one point worse off in this top-of-the-table showdown.

Salzburg’s fate remains in their own hands ahead of the penultimate round of matches, and victory would be enough to guarantee them a place in the last 16 if AC Milan and Dinamo Zagreb’s encounter ends all square, but they could also drop out of the top two if results do not go their way.

Salzburg have not lost at home since December in Europe’s premier tournament – with Milan, Sevilla, Bayern Munich and Lille among the clubs to have failed to win at the Red Bull Arena since – and Chelsea also know a thing or two about stalemates.

In spite of their lengthy injury list, Salzburg are rarely kept at bay in the Champions League, and the rejuvenated Kepa Arrizabalaga will need to be on top form to keep out Salzburg’s  menacing attacking starlets.

Benfica vs Juventus

Unbeaten Benfica welcome an ailing Juventus

With one side seeking a pass to the last 16 and the other scrapping for Champions League survival, unbeaten Benfica and an ailing Juventus meet at Estadio da Luz on Tuesday.

Juve travel to Lisbon teetering on the brink of elimination after being humbled by Maccabi Haifa last time out; leaving them five points adrift of the top two in Group H. Meanwhile, their hosts will assure progress if they beat the Serie A side for the second time in a matter of weeks.

Successive 1-1 draws with co-leaders Paris Saint-Germain have not only put Benfica on the verge of making it through to the Champions League knockout stages again, but also established them as a potential team to be wary of in the last 16.

Benfica will book their place if they win, or even if they draw and Haifa cannot topple PSG. They are therefore set to reach the knockout phase in consecutive seasons for only the second time.

Nonetheless, an experienced Juve side can muster all their guile to grind out a draw – though that will not be enough for them to stay in the mix for a top-two finish.

Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund

Haaland back to former stomping grounds to haunt Dortmund

Manchester City will seal top spot in Group G of the Champions League if they can avoid defeat away to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

The hosts, meanwhile, need two more points to be certain of progressing to the knockout stages, although a draw against the English champions would be enough to do so should Sevilla beat Copenhagen in the other match in the group.

Dortmund should head into their meeting against Pep Guardiola‘s side filled full of confidence having thrashed Stuttgart 5-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

another defeat to the Citizens could potentially make their trip to Copenhagen next week a nervy one depending on how their two rivals in the group fare against each other this week, meaning Dortmund will be doing everything in their power to wrap things up with one game to spare.

Man City know that they will top their Champions League group by avoiding defeat in Dortmund.

Haaland will be determined to impress at his former stomping ground, and it would take a very brave man to bet against him scoring against them once again, especially with so much still to play for.

Haaland is likely to be a man possessed in front of his former fans, and that could make all the difference as Man City look to secure top spot in Group G.

RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid

RB Leipzig lock horns with Real Madrid

RB Leipzig lock horns with Carlo Ancelotti‘s Real Madrid side at the Red Bull Arena Leipzig. RB Leipzig are currently in eighth place in the Bundesliga standings and have struggled to impose themselves this season.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, are at the top of the La Liga table at the moment and have been in exceptional form so far this season. Los Blancos eased past Sevilla by a 3-1 margin in their previous game and will look to achieve a similar result.

Real Madrid have thrived under Carlo Ancelotti’s tutelage and are arguably one of Europe’s best teams at the moment. Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior have stepped up to the plate this season and will want to make a difference.

Real Madrid are the better team on paper and hold the upper hand going into this game. Credit: portskeeda.com

$790m Expected To Hit BoG Account … To Ease Pressure On The Cedi; Gabby Otchere Darko Reveals

0
Messrs Otchere Darko and Ken Ofori-Atta

The Publisher of the Daily Statesman, Gabby Otchere Darko, has revealed that $790 million is expected to hit the Bank of Ghana account and that should help improve the current turmoil in the forex market.

In a tweet he made last week Friday, Gabby, as he is popularly known, did not state where the money was coming from, but admitted that the Cedi, which had dropped by some 60% to the dollar, came under severe pressure last week.

He was, however, hopeful that the incoming United States of America (USA) bucks will help stabilize the situation.

Ghana is currently negotiating with the International Monetary (IMF) in Washington DC, USA, for a possible $3 billion extended credit facility to stabilize the economy and bring it back to the path of growth.

The negotiation, when successful, will also help the country to access funds from the international capital markets in the long run.

The $750 million African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) Loan approved by Parliament earlier in the year hit the BoG account in August. It was followed by a cocoa syndicated loan of $1.3billion.But despite these huge injections of the US dollars, the local currency, the Cedi, is still struggling to stand on its feet.

Experts are attributing the development to the investments in the dollar by business people.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has called on Ghanaians not to panic and that the situation will be brought under control.

“It is quite perplexing to see where it’s going, of course, typically in October, people are importing for Christmas and maybe there is a rush for that (the dollar), but my expectation is that once we also conclude with the Fund (IMF), that will lead to the fund’s disbursement early next year to do that,” Mr Ofori-Atta reportedly told Asaase Radio

“The support we are getting from countries like Germany and France, we are confident that we will get the resources needed, so we really would want people not to panic or be rushing in order to put pressure on the currency, I think it’s unnecessary and we are in good shape,” he assured.

We have gold, clinker, come and invest -Savanna Minister

0
The Regional Minister, Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril
The Minister and his team with officials of the Information Ministry

The Savanna Regional Minister, Mr Saeed Muhazu Jibril, has called on business men who are into gold mining and cement production to invest in the region, because it has large deposits of gold and clinker.

According to Mr Jibril, tapping into these resources will help reduce the prices of commodities such as cement, which are being sold at high prices in the country.

“Let me say that Savanna region is welcoming all investors. We have deposits of gold, large deposits of gold, clinker…

“If we make good use of what we have here, I think prices of very important commodities will go down. Savanna region is calling on all investors who are interested …”

The Regional Minister made the call when he took his turn to speak at the State of the Region report, a program put together by the Ministry of Information to enable Ghanaians have a fair idea of developments in the various regions in Ghana.

Throwing more light on the availability of clinker in the region, Mr Jibril said the material is in huge deposit, to the extent that some are being exported to Burkina Faso and hence, called on the business community to invest in the region.

Aside mining and cement production, the minister also made mention of the availability of arable land in the region. He noted that rice, maize, yam, sugarcane and few other crops grow very well in the region and hence, called on people to take advantage and delve into the production of some of these crops in the region.

Aware of the difficulties some businesses go through in acquiring land to set up plants, Mr Jibril indicated that land is not a problem in the Savanna region.

He said the chiefs and leaders in the region will ensure that business men acquire lands for free to enable them establish and operate their plants, so that their investments can help develop the region.

“So we are telling all business men to come and talk to the chiefs, land is for free in Savanna region. There are not going to be any problems if you want to invest. We will personally lead you to have a smooth investment program in Savanna region,” Mr Jibril said.

Not oblivious of the level of insecurity in Northern Ghana, which usually deters people from investing, the Regional Minister noted that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is working its socks off to maintain peace and security in the community.

“Since the region was created we have had our own REGSEC and we have tried to maintain peace and security for people to go about their work, as they should,” he indicated.

He alluded to the fact that there are few inter-regional disputes over land/boundaries, but said measures are being put in place to ensure that such boundary issues are resolved.

Road infrastructure development is one of the key areas that the Minister didn’t leave out in his bid to woo investors into the region.

Mr Jibril spoke about how the Akufo-Addo administration has embarked on road development in the region and assured investors not to worry about the road network.

The Minister also took time to speak about the gains the region has made in education, since he assumed office in 2019.

According to the Minister, the region always places last in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, but that story has now changed.

He noted that the region has moved from obtaining 2.44% pass in the WASSCE in 2019 to 42.49% pass.

He attributed this to the stringent and disciplinary measures he instituted at the various district education offices.

Jospong Group establishes more waste treatment plants

0
. The General Manager of KCARP, Mr Samuel Ntummy, in a group photograph with the Parliamentary Press Corps

Ghana will soon cash in on the 840,000 tonnes of waste it produces per year, as the Jospong Group of Companies explore the waste recycling and compost business.

A bagged compost

The group has invested massively in the establishment of waste recycling and compost plants that would ensure that organic, plastic, metal, leather and other waste materials produced in the country are recycled into other valuables for sale and use.

Already, the group has commenced work on the Accra and Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plants and is putting up twelve Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECOP) in the remaining twelve regions in the country.

However, due to the capital intensive nature of setting up the plants, the group is calling on the government to intensify its support to the company, to enable it deliver on its promise to the people of Ghana.

Communications Officer, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Adams Mohammed Mahamasaid “waste management is a partnership between government and the private sector. We cannot do it alone and they cannot also do it alone, and that’s why we have collaboration.

The tunnel where waste is first deposited

“You have seen the massive infrastructure that we are putting in place…we are just calling on the government to help us, support us like they have been doing over the years to ensure that such projects and more will come onboard.”

He noted that, the group has a lot of projects it would be embarking on in 2023 and the years ahead, and observed that government’s support will really be helpful to the growth of the business.

“We have a lot of projects that we are bringing next year and the years ahead of us, so all we are telling the government is that we thank them very much for the support they have been giving us over the years and we are just telling them to give us massive support.”

Mr Mohammed Mahama made the call when he addressed the Parliamentary Press Corps, who were on a tour to inspect the work done so far, with regards to the IRECOP projects, which is being funded partly with the Sanitation Levy.

In 2021, Government announced the introduction of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy of 10 pesewas to help address the issue of sanitation in the country.

The money was to be incorporated into a proposed fuel levy and the rate will be charged on the price per litre of petrol/diesel, under the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA).

The media receiving briefing on how plastics are melted

The government noted at the time that the tax will enable it embark on a number of projects, key among them being the construction of the IRECOP facilities, as well as Medical Waste Treatment facilities. This is what culminated into the establishment of the IRECOP facilities by the Jospong Group.

The plants have been designed to receive, sort, process and recycle Municipal solid waste to produce organic compost for agronomic processes in Ghana and the sub-region. Other recoverable materials such as plastics and metal scraps will serve as input materials for the steel and plastic manufacturing sectors.

Stages of completion of some IRECOP plants

Bono Region

The IRECOP plant is situated in a community called Nwanwasua. A test run has already been carried out and the facility, which has the capacity of recycling 600-800 tonnes of waste a day, is set to begin operation by the end of the year.

According to the Private Jobs Manager at the site, Mr John OtiOtchere, the facility will provide about 80-100 direct jobs, whilst  indirect jobs will be between 400-500, adding that preference will be given to the local folks.

Ahafo region

The IRECOP plant is situated in the capital town of the region – Goaso.  The facility is set to recycle 400 tonnes of waste a day.

Like the Bono region, this facility would also provide direct employment of 80-100, whilst indirect employment will be over 400, according to Mr Edward Dzida, Ahafo Regional Manager for the Jospong Group.

Mr Dzida noted that the facility will ensure that a huge percentage of the employees, ranging from the technical team to those who will be engaged to do the sorting of the waste will be local folks.

Savanna and Northern Regions

Damango, the capital town of the Savanna region is where the IRECOP facility is situated, whilst that of the Northern region is located in Tamale.

The installation works at the Damango facility has been completed and has culminated in the commissioning of the project, however, installation works at the Tamale facility is yet to start.

The Tamale plant, when completed, would be one of the biggest facilities in the country, but that of Damango would be able to process only 200 tonnes of waste a day.

Volta and Oti Regions

The Ho facility, which is located in a community known as Akrofu-Agorve and that of the Oti region, which is located in the capital of the region, Dambai, are not different from the other facilities. The two facilities will also become operational by the end of the year.

Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP)

The facility commenced operation in October 2020 and has so far provided 300 direct employment and 400-500 indirect jobs to residents of the Ashanti region.

Due to the high demand, the group has installed another plant, which would start operation soon and increase direct employment from 300 to 450 whilst that of indirect employment will be between 800-1000.

Benefits of the project

Giving a summary of the benefits of the IRECOP projects, General Manager of KCARP, Mr Samuel Ntummy said the compost/fertilizer produced is one of the best, because it is able to supply nutrients for two years.

He said, the fertilizer, which goes for only 30 Ghana Cedis on the market, enables one to do intensive farming and grow as many crops as one wishes.

Mr Ntummy noted that people were reluctant in patronising the product when it was first introduced, but that story has changed and more and more people are developing interest in using the fertilizer.

He indicated that there is no limit to what the company can produce and rallied for the support of Ghanaians.

On the use of other materials recovered from the waste, MrNtummy noted that the plastics are used for the production of chairs, waste bins, polythene bags, buckets and many more, whilst the tin cans are melted into containers for storing food.

Editorial: Gov’t should not kowtow to the dictates of cargo drivers

0
Editorial

The Ghanaian Times on January 13, 2022 quoted the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) as saying that a total of 2,924 persons died in 2021 through road crashes.

Additionally, the story continued that 15,972 road crashes were also recorded within the same period, resulting in 13,048 injuries. To help stem the tide, the NRSA promised to strictly enforce its directives to all intercity bus operators that travel more than 500 kilometres or more than eight hours to engage two drivers.

The Chronicle is unable to tell whether NRSA has fulfilled its promise. We can, however, state that the fatalities on our roads are very frightening and something ought to be done about it.

Though the figures for this year (2022) are not yet known, since the year has not come to an end, we believe it will be nothing to write home about, because our attitudes on the roads have not changed.

Whilst our poor road networks and single lane roads, instead of dual carriage ways linking our regional capitals, are major contributory factors to the problem, over loading is another major challenge which we tend to overlook.

It is common knowledge that vehicles that transport foodstuffs from the hinterland to the urban centres overload their vehicles. The same applies, especially to the charcoal transporters, who overload their vehicles, making it very difficult for oncoming traffic to even see ahead.

But despite the danger they pose to other road users, these drivers are still pleading with the government to allow them to overload their trucks, since that is the only way they can break even.

Addressing a news conference in Accra recently, the Chairman of the Achimota Cargo Station, Abdallah Mohammed, threatened that they would park their cargo trucks if they are not allowed to either overload the vehicles or increase freight charges.

Much as The Chronicle sympathises with these drivers, especially with the hike in fuel prices, we completely disagree that they should be allowed to overload.

Obviously, they are looking at how to make profits without thinking about their own safety and the safety of other road users. This is unfortunate and we do not think the Ministry of Transport will kowtow to their demands.

In our opinion, these drivers should rather negotiate with the government for the upward adjustment of the prices they are currently charging, instead of the threat to park their vehicles if they are not allowed to overload.

The police, we advise, should continuously keep these truck drivers in check by arresting and prosecuting them for overloading their vehicles.

Under no circumstance should their commercial interest supersede the right of individuals to live as human beings.

As we have already indicated, the right to live had already been taken away from 2,924 Ghanaians who died through road crashes last year alone. Accepting the demands of these drivers will amount to giving them license to kill on our roads. Let those who have ears listen to us.
