The Nigeria Police Force has assured Nigerians and foreigners in Abuja and elsewhere of adequate security. Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Monday in reaction to an advisory by the United States.

An alert on Sunday by the U.S. Embassy warned that terrorists were targeting some locations in the nation’s capital. Adejobi said the Force had reviewed the advisory and was taking necessary steps as the lead agency in internal security.

The spokesperson said there is no cause for alarm as all hands are on deck to collectively nip threats in the bud.

The FPRO announced that Inspector-General Usman Baba has ordered the Commissioners of Police, FCT, and 36 states to restrategize security management within their jurisdictions.

Adejobi said required support, logistics, and deployments necessary for safety will be provided to commands.

As part of measures to forestall terror attacks, the IGP has directed the commencement of a Counter Terrorism Incident Simulation Exercise codenamed “Operation Darkin Gaggawa”.

The drill will hold within the Force Headquarters and the Police Officers Wives Association School opposite the headquarters on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The exercise will involve diversion of traffic, use of blank ammunition, and other operational manpower and assets.

“It is designed to improve interoperability and synergy between different Units and Formations of the Force in response to terrorist incidents and other violent crimes.”

The police urged the public not to panic at the sounds of explosives and gunshots during the exercise.

King Charles sympathizes with Buhari over floods in Nigeria

King Charles and President Buhari

The British monarch, King Charles III, on Friday joined other world leaders to sympathise with President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent floods ravaging parts of Nigeria.

In his message to the Nigerian president, the monarch said he wanted the Nigerian leader to know how deeply saddened he was “to hear of the many people who have lost their loved ones and whose lives have been so dreadfully affected as a consequence of the devastating floods across Nigeria.”

Nigeria is experiencing its worst floods in a decade with over 600 lives lost and properties worth billions destroyed.

The recent floods have displaced more than a million people from their homes.

Some of the most affected states include Kogi, Anambra, Rivers, Benue, Yobe, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River.

“… our most heartfelt sympathy is with all those who have suffered so much, and our thoughts are with those working to support the recovery efforts,” the British monarch said.

“I know that the United Kingdom stands in solidarity with Nigeria as you recover from these truly terrible events.”

The UN and the US have also sympathised with Nigeria and offered their support.

Court rejects govt’s request for adjournment of hearing on Nnamdi Kanu

Nnamdi Kanu

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Monday rejected the Nigerian government’s application for adjournment of a hearing relating to the judgement freeing Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Oludotun Adefope-Okojie had on 13 October dismissed the terrorism and treasonable felony charges against the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The court had ordered Mr Kanu’s release from detention after striking out a seven-count charge pending before Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mr Adefope-Okojie held that Mr Kanu’s forcible extradition from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021 was a breach of local and international laws.

Instead of complying with the appellate court’s decision ordering Mr Kanu’s unconditional release, the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

David Kaswe representing the office of the AGF, Abubakar Malami, filed an application for a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s verdict on the separatist leader.

At Monday’s proceedings, Mr Kaswe sought an adjournment for the hearing of the stay of execution application.

However, the appellate court panel led by Haruna Tsanami ordered Mr Kaswe to open arguments in the pending application.

Mr Kaswe based his request for an adjournment on the grounds that Mr Kanu’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, served him with a counter-affidavit to the application last Friday.

Esther Smith opens up on abusive marriage

Esther Smith

Esther Smith in a new interview has opened up on going through abusive marriage. According to the Ghanaian Gospel singer, she may have lost her life like how Osinachi Nwachukwu passed on. The Nigerian Gospel singer died on April 8, 2022, after her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, allegedly kicked her in the chest.

Opening up about her abuse, Esther Smith said God gave her brains and sense so used it to quit the marriage even though it was a difficult time for her at that time.

You know, my child I gave birth to in Dutchland, some people turned it around and said I had given my child to another man, and the person perpetrating those lies was someone close to me. The person was creating an impression,” she recounted.

She continued that “my situation would have turned out just like the lady who died in Nigeria, Osinachi’s death. So I had to quit. I had to quit because God has given us brains and sense. You have to apply it“.

Sharing her experience after shunning the marriage, the Ghanaian singer also disclosed that her ex-husband formulated stories to tarnish her image and she couldn’t defend herself until this day.

Voters in five American states set to wipe slavery off the books

0

When slavery was outlawed in the US in 1865, the 13th Amendment included one exception. “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction,” the amendment reads.

The penalty has remained on the books in more than a dozen states, even though it hasn’t been enforced since the Civil War. But next month, voters in Alabama, Louisiana, Vermont, Oregon and Tennessee will be given the opportunity to exorcise the punishment from their states’ constitutions once and for all.

The proposed amendments would either explicitly rule out slavery and indentured servitude as potential punishments or remove the terms from state law altogether.

Advocates are hailing the initiatives as long overdue and hope that state-level movements will one day lead to the removal of such language from the 13th Amendment altogether.

Arshad Sharif left Pakistan in May after complaining about being harassed by the authorities

An investigation has begun in Kenya after well-known Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif was shot dead on Sunday. An initial police report said officers shot him while he was in a moving vehicle in a case of mistaken identity.

Sharif was a critic of Pakistan’s military as well as a vocal supporter of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan. The 49-year-old left Pakistan in May after complaining of harassment. He had previously been in the UK and Dubai before travelling to Kenya.

It is not known exactly what he was doing in the East African country.

Kenya’s police watchdog – the Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) – said it had sent its rapid response team to the site of Sunday evening’s shooting in Kajiado county near the capital, Nairobi. The team will be investigating the “alleged police killing of a Pakistani national”, Ipoa chairperson Ann Makori told journalists.

An initial police report about the incident suggests that Sharif was in a car that officers mistakenly believed to have been stolen. The officers shot at the vehicle when it failed to stop at a roadblock.

Brazil politician throws grenades at police

Brazil Chief Justice Cármen Lucía

A Brazilian politician is in custody after throwing grenades at police officers who came to his house in Rio de Janeiro state to arrest him. Roberto Jefferson, an ally of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, wounded two officers before surrendering on Sunday. A Supreme Court judge earlier ordered his detention for insulting Chief Justice Cármen Lucía. He was already under house arrest for threatening her.

Mr Bolsonaro reacted by saying those who fired at police should be arrested.

The two officers were wounded by shrapnel from a grenade during the attack in Comendador Levy Gasparian, north of the state capital Rio de Janeiro. They were taken to hospital and later discharged.

Mr Jefferson, the 69-year-old former leader of the PTB political party, also fired a number of shots from a rifle, shattering the windshield of a police car.

Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes had ordered the politician to be detained on the grounds that he violated the conditions of house arrest.

Political tensions are high in Brazil ahead of Sunday’s presidential election run-off between Mr Bolsonaro and left-winger Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The leader of a small but violent left-wing rebel group which has been terrorising rural communities in Paraguay has been killed in a clash with soldiers, officials say.

Osvaldo Villalba was the leader of the Paraguayan People’s Army (EPP), which has carried out a string of killings and kidnappings in Paraguay.

Among those being held by the EPP is the country’s former Vice-President, Óscar Denis.

He was kidnapped in September 2020.

Army officials told reporters that soldiers had come across the rebels on Sunday after they heard gunshots while on patrol in Amambay province.

When they arrived at the scene of the shooting they found two indigenous people had been killed and a third injured by the rebels. An army spokesman said it was not clear why the rebels had attacked the indigenous men but the two groups have in the past clashed over the recruitment of indigenous children by the EPP.

Russian spy chief blames West for nuclear tension

Sergei Naryshkin, head of the SVR Foreign Intelligence Service

Western leaders have expressed concern about the scale of nuclear sabre-rattling over Ukraine by senior Russian officials, including President Putin, especially after February’s invasion.

How does Moscow react to charges it is engaging in such rhetoric and threats?

Russia’s most powerful officials, Sergei Naryshkin, head of the SVR Foreign Intelligence Service, responded to international criticism.

He denied any Russian nuclear rhetoric, even though there’s been plenty.

Mr Naryshkin pointed the finger back at the West. “Will you state categorically that Russia will not use nuclear weapons in Ukraine or engage in other provocative actions, such as exploding a dirty bomb, or blowing up a dam?” Mr Naryshkin was asked.

Russia’s spy chief didn’t answer the question directly. “We are, of course, very concerned about Western rhetoric about the possibility of using nuclear weapons,” Sergei Naryshkin responded.

“Yesterday Russia’s defence minister talked by phone with his colleagues from Turkey, the US and France. He told them about the possible plans of the Ukrainian leadership to use a so-called ‘dirty nuclear bomb’,” Mr Naryshkin said.

Rishi Sunak wins race to become UK’s new prime minister

Rishi Sunak, UK new prime minister

Rishi Sunak will become the United Kingdom’s new prime minister after winning the ruling Conservative Party’s leadership contest triggered by the dramatic resignation of Liz Truss last week.

The chairman of the Conservative Party has called on its members to unite behind Sunak as its new leader. Rishi Sunak’s victory is seen by some as a victory for diversity and representation in British politics.

He will be the UK’s first person of colour, first of Asian heritage and first Hindu to lead the country. He will also be the youngest for more than 200 years at the age of 42.

Sunak’s win on Monday came days after Truss’s resignation following her disastrous tax cuts plans and policy U-turns plunged the markets into chaos.

only challenger, Penny Mordaunt, leader of the House of Commons and former defence minister, was reportedly backed by 30 MPs compared with nearly 150 supporting Sunak.

While there were rumours over a Johnson’s comeback over the weekend, he pulled out of the contest on Sunday.
