Sarkodie co-signs rising rap sensation Bepor Keddi

0
Sarkodie co-sign Beppor Keddi

In a moment that’s got the whole Ghanaian music scene buzzing, Sarkodie, one of Africa’s most decorated rapper, has extended a powerful co-sign to emerging artist Keddi—and the internet can’t get enough.

It all started with a freestyle by Keddi, a raw, real and Ga rapper, with so much fire and vibrancy.

His verse wasn’t just technically sharp—it was emotionally charged and culturally rich.

The video made its way onto X (formerly Twitter) and soon caught the eyes of Ghana’s rap king himself.

“You extremely dope!! Looking forward to you writing a full Ga verse for me … and this is a promise — I want to personally A&R one record for you.”
— Sarkodie quoted the video via X.

The reaction was instant. Retweets, likes, shares—and most importantly—hope for a young artist whose dreams had just collided with destiny.

Keddi, overwhelmed with gratitude, shared his emotional response: “Dear Highest King @sarkodie, I’m really grateful for posting me. This means the world to me. I’m even shaking as I type.”

And just like that, a door opened. Not because of industry politics but because of connections and pure talent, which spoke louder than anything else.

This moment is more than a co-sign—it’s a cultural handoff. Sarkodie’s recognition of Keddi isn’t just symbolic; it’s strategic. He’s stepping into the role of mentor, offering to personally A&R a project for the rising star—an opportunity that many young artists only dream of.

It also reaffirms something crucial – “The streets are still watching. And so are the kings.”

In an era where digital noise often drowns out real talent, this proves that authentic voices still break through. Keddi’s freestyle wasn’t just a performance—it was a prayer answered.

US Vice-Pres in India to meet Modi amid tariff tensions

0
US Vice-President JD Vance is on a four-day India tour

US Vice-President JD Vance has arrived in the Indian capital, Delhi, where he is due to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid global trade tensions sparked by Washington’s tariff policies.

The talks are likely to focus on fast tracking a much-awaited bilateral trade deal between the two countries.

Vance is also expected to go on a sightseeing tour of Agra and Jaipur with his family.

His visit comes as countries across the world rush to negotiate trade deals before US President Donald Trump’s 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends on 9 July.

“The two sides will also exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest,” India’s foreign ministry said ahead of Vance’s visit.

The vice-president is accompanied by his children and wife Usha Vance whose parents migrated to the US from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

After his arrival in Delhi on Monday morning, Vance visited the Akshardham temple complex in the city.

He is due to meet the Indian prime minister for formal talks later in the day and Modi is to host Vance for dinner in the evening.

The visit comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and several countries after Trump announced steep reciprocal tariffs on them.

World reacts to the death of Pope Francis

The late Pope Francis

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, has died aged 88, the Vatican says.

His death on Monday came shortly after a bout of double pneumonia that kept him hospitalised for five weeks at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

Italy

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mourned the loss of “a great man, a great shepherd” and expressed deep sorrow.

“I had the privilege of enjoying his friendship, his advice, his teachings, which never ceased, not even during times of trial and suffering,” she said. “We say goodbye to the holy father with a heart full of sadness.”

Argentina

The presidency office “deeply regretted” the death of the first Argentinian leader of the Catholic Church. President Javier Milei, who previously clashed with the pope, praised Francis’s focus on interreligious dialogue, encouragement of spirituality among the young, and focus on cost-cutting in the Vatican.

European Union

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Francis’s life was defined by his efforts to build a fairer and more peaceful world. “He inspired millions, far beyond the Catholic Church, with his humility and love so pure for the less fortunate,” she said.

United States

The White House shared a tribute on social media, writing “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis” alongside a photo of the pope meeting President Donald Trump and the first lady. In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!”

Vice President JD Vance, who met the pope on Sunday, said: “My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.”

Russia

President Vladimir Putin expressed his “sincere condolences”, praising the efforts of Francis to strengthen ties between the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Churches. The Moscow Patriarchate echoed the sentiment, saying the late pontiff had played a key role in advancing dialogue between the two branches of Christianity.

France

President Emmanuel Macron praised the late pontiff for his enduring solidarity with society’s most vulnerable. “In this time of war and brutality, he had a sense for the other, for the most fragile,” Macron said, commending his humility.

Brazil

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva hailed Pope Francis for his work on climate change and social justice. “With his simplicity, his courage and empathy, Francis brought the topic of climate change to the Vatican,” he said. “The pope vigorously criticised the economic models that have brought so much injustice to humanity.”

Spain

The European country has declared three days of mourning. Justice Minister Felix Bolanos said in a televised address that the country regrets “the death of a good man and a great pope” and praised Francis’s “reformist” papacy that “will leave a legacy for history”.

Australia

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Francis would be mourned by Australians of all faiths, describing him as “a devoted champion and loving father” to Catholics. “His compassion embraced all humanity,” Albanese told ABC News. “He urged us to hear the cry of the earth and remember all we share.”

Germany

Friedrich Merz, Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting, said Francis would be remembered for his unwavering commitment to marginalised groups. “He was guided by humility and faith in God’s mercy,” Merz wrote on X.

United Kingdom

King Charles said he was “most deeply saddened”, praising Pope Francis’s “compassion”, commitment to unity, and the environment.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences, saying Francis’s “tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all” would be remembered.

United Nations

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed what he called Pope Francis’s historic influence as a voice for peace and human dignity.

“I join the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a messenger of hope, humility and humanity,” he said in a statement.

El Salvador offers Venezuela prisoner swap involving US deportees

El Salvador’s president has offered to repatriate 252 Venezuelans deported by the US and imprisoned in his country – if Venezuela releases the same number of political prisoners.

Nayib Bukele appealed directly to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a post on social media.

He said many of the Venezuelan deportees had committed “rape and murder”, while Venezuelan political prisoners were jailed only because they opposed Maduro, whose re-election last year is widely disputed.

Later Venezuela’s chief prosecutor Tarek William Saab criticised Bukele’s proposal. He demanded to know what crimes the deportees were accused of, whether they had appeared before a judge or had access to legal counsel.

The Venezuelan government argues that it has no political prisoners – a claim rejected by rights groups.

In a post on X, Bukele wrote: “I want to propose you [Maduro] a humanitarian agreement calling for the repatriation of 100% of the 252 Venezuelans who were deported, in exchange for the release… of the identical number from among the thousands of political prisoners that you hold”.

He also mentioned nearly 50 prisoners of other nationalities, including US citizens, as part of the proposed swap.

In recent weeks, more than 200 Venezuelans were sent from the US to El Salvador.

President Donald Trump’s administration accuses them of being members of the Tren de Aragua criminal gang.

Washington pays El Salvador to keep those deported in its notorious high-security Terrorism Confinement Center.

Mahama invites Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger leaders to ECOWAS@50 Launch

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

President John Dramani Mahama has extended an invitation to the military leaders of Ghana’s Sahel bloc neighbours, to the official launch of the 50 years of ECOWAS’s establishment in Accra.

The invitation, which was extended to the leaders of Ghana’s northern landlocked neighbours by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is a move towards building bridges and collaborating to strengthen the West African sub‑region.
Ghana is scheduled to host the official launch of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Accra, on April 22, 2025.
The event will mark a significant milestone for the West African regional bloc, which was founded on May 28, 1975.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the ceremony would be graced by key dignitaries, including the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria; the President of the ECOWAS Commission; Heads of State and Government from member countries; and representatives of regional and international partner organisations.

President John Dramani Mahama would host the ceremony and as part of the launch, ECOWAS would unveil its 50th anniversary logo and declare the official theme for the Jubilee Celebrations.
Furthermore, the launch would set the tone for a year‑long series of commemorative events across all member states.

“After the launch, Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on April 22 and 23, 2025 where Foreign and Finance Ministers of member states will deliberate on pressing regional issues, including the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from the bloc to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
“A comprehensive report will be prepared for consideration by the ECOWAS Heads of State,” Mr Ablakwa explained.

Samuel Ablakwa lauded ECOWAS’s legacy over the past five decades, highlighting its achievements in regional trade, movement of people, infrastructural development and peacekeeping efforts.
He pointed to successful initiatives including the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme and major projects like the West African Power Pool and the Abidjan‑Lagos Corridor as examples of meaningful progress.

The North Tongu Member of Parliament also noted the importance of celebrating the human impact of regional integration.
To ensure a successful celebration, Ghana has formed a planning committee chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is working closely with the ECOWAS Commission and other stakeholders.

The Upsurge of Democratic Dictatorship

0
Feature

With the re-entry into power of the NDC, Ghanaians have started witnessing some signs of yesteryears under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Rawlings.

Today, the False Report Act (1959), which in effect was meant to deal with anyone who made pronouncements perceived to embarrass government, has been resurrected.

For how can it be an offence for, Mohammed Zakuo, of the opposition NPP, to have wished the Vice President of the land, H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, with words like “Rest Well, Your Excellency?”

Rest Well, is a goodwill message meaning sleep well or have a good rest. It is a polite and encouraging phrase that suggests wish for someone to have a peaceful and rejuvenating period of relaxation and sleep. And it was this that had the state security agency, NIB, going after Zakuo. Is it that someone up there does not fully understand the English language?

I remember back in the early eighties, during one of the National Sports Festivals, held in University of Ghana, Legon, I personally encountered how misunderstanding of idiomatic expressions could most likely lead to “war.”

The Ghana Armed Forces were engaging the University in volleyball when a student cracked a joke. One of the soldiers was not too pleased and expressed his feelings, angrily. As tempers started rising, one female student cried out to her colleagues that “Please let it go. He does not have any sense of humour.” Then the time-bomb blasted. The soldier became so furious and started shouting angrily, “she says I do not have sense.” After a while, confusion and laughter allowed peace to reign.

And today, here we are again, with someone just saying “rest well,” and it has become an offensive language now fully classified under treasonable offences, so the state security agency had to step in.

With what is coming, victims can be harvested to court when they utter the Twi word, “dayie.” This word means “good night” to someone and at the same time, “rest in peace,” to a departed soul being laid to rest.

One must be very careful when saying this word “dayie,” to a living being. Or he could find himself in court to prove beyond reasonable doubt, that he was not wishing the plaintiff, death.

How freedom of expression is gradually being gagged in this democratic era of our country, is very amazing. Was it not the NDC who fought against journalists being allegedly gaged by the NPP government? But in power, people must seek permission before they voice out certain words. We need to chill down and rest well.

Ashanti region is not the stronghold of the NDC. This region contributes a lot to the victory of the NPP, since this party’s votes alone from Ashanti can wipe out all votes for the NDC from at least eight other regions.

During the 2024 General Elections, the Ashanti votes for the NPP was short over 600,000 votes of what the party had in 2020. And the NDC had more than 40,000 votes than it had in the region in 2020. This contributed greatly in the NDC securing that massive victory in 2024. The Ashanti region alone contributed one-third of NPP supporters nationwide who decided not to vote at all during the elections. So, in all things NDC must be very grateful to Ashanti region. However, what do we see, gross disrespect is what the NDC is showing to that region.

First, during the Council of State elections, knowing their party member was losing, some NDC thugs stormed the venue and created mayhem, resulting in the process being re-run, days later. This time the NDC man won and the NDC was at peace.

Now what are we hearing from the new mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi? He spoke and said: ‘I have my own democratic military style, which I will be implementing. When we say ‘leave this space,’ and you don’t leave this space, and I get there, and you’re not lucky and my boys are with me, there and then, we will beat you. There, in the middle of Adum…, and [if] my 10 boys are in their pickups with me and with their whips…, we will beat you…. If you let the job become difficult for me, I will let your body feel the difficulty that you’re giving to me.’

What stupid nonsense! He actually said violation of public laws are not for the police to handle? He believed in whipping sense into people, instead of applying the tenets of law and democracy. And this was his third day at work.

Seriously, is this man saying the only way to maintain law and order in Kumasi is to whip people? Is that what his colleague chief executives are doing in their jurisdictions? How does he regard the people of Ashanti? Like animals who must be whip in order?

And he had the effrontery to say he was going to do this to make Otumfuo’s city of Kumasi, a beautiful city. Come to think of it, is he saying, HRH the Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, has sanctioned the canning of his subjects?

This is gross arrogance and it clearly shows that the NDC does not like Asantes, especially the people of Kumasi.

Rawlings came in 1979 and 1981 and tortured indigenes of Ashanti region. A prominent chief was forced to carry night-soil for committing undisclosed offences. A pastor of a church was dragged out by soldiers and killed. Seventy-six of his church members had earlier been killed by the Rawlings’ soldiers. Rawlings could stand in front of Asante chiefs and condemn them for being ungrateful not to vote for the NDC. Rawlings could poke his bloody fingers into the face of HRH, the Asantehene, for no offence committed. Rawlings could murder three prominent Asante senior army officers in 1979 and later told us that they committed no wrong.

And now people of Kumasi will be whipped should they violate any public law. Is somebody serious here? This shows great disrespect to Asantes, portraying them as people who cannot think and act properly, so, like animals, they must be whipped in line. This is an insult to Asanteman and the Golden Stool.

Hon Ofori Agyeman Boadi is only showing that he cannot handle the task given him by President John Mahama, because clearly, he is not fit for any appointment. The days that innocent people are whipped in public are long gone and if he attempts this on anyone, he should know that the same thing could be done to him and his family members. Is this new NDC government re-introducing the Rawlings era where people were whipped indiscriminately in public?

From the re-introduction of the False Report Act and Rawlings’ democratisation of violence we now re-enter into the age of Nkrumah’s failed campaign promise to cocoa farmers.

During his campaign for the first general election in the Gold Coast in 1951, Nkrumah stormed the major cocoa growing region, the Ashanti region, which then included the current Ashanti region and the former Brong-Ahafo region, and promised the cocoa farmers that when elected he would increase the producer price of the product. And with this the region which was already a CPP stronghold exhibited great loyalty and voted massively for Nkrumah and the CPP.

Unfortunately, when Nkrumah won the elections, he went ahead to reduce the producer price of cocoa by a third of the prevailing price and also hedged that very low price for four years.

This greatly disappointed cocoa farmers in the region and so, when the NLM was formed most of them crossed over, denouncing Nkrumah and the CPP.

In April 2024, the world market price for cocoa went to $10,000.00 or GH¢130,000.00 per tonne. The NPP government increased the producer price of cocoa from GH¢20,928.00 per tonne to GH¢33,120.00 or GH¢2,070.00 per bag. The then opposition, NDC, cried foul and said the government was short-changing the cocoa farmers. The new producer price, according to them was only 25.47% of the international market price and suggested that at least 70%, that is GH¢91,000.00 a tonne or GH¢5,687.50 per bag was a fair price, promising to pay that to cocoa farmers, when elected into government.

The NPP government increased the producer price in September and again in November in 2024, to GH¢ 49,600.00 a tonne or GH¢3,100.00 per bag. This however, fell short of the NDC’s proposed GH¢91,000.00 a tonne or GH¢5,687.50 per bag.

Come December 2024, most cocoa farmers in anticipation that an NDC government would make them richer than they were, voted massively for the NDC.

With the NDC forming government today, and with the current world market price of cocoa at GH¢123,778.21 ($8,032.33), one would have expected cocoa farmers to be receiving GH¢86,744.74 per tonne of cocoa sold or GH¢5,545.26 according to the NDC’s own pledge and promises.

But unfortunately, just as Kwame Nkrumah deceived cocoa farmers, the NDC has backed down on its promise. In a letter dated April 8, 2025, the NDC government, through Ghana Cocoa Board, is telling the cocoa farmers to exercise patience and continue to receive what Nana Addo paid for their cocoa. Whatever happened to the promise of paying them at least 70% of the world market price, when it comes to power? Anyway, Nkrumah deceived cocoa farmers in 1951 and the NDC has done likewise in 2025.

Are we going back to the Nkrumah’s reign as head of state of this country?

This is pure democratic dictatorship.

Today’s European Leagues Fixtures & Preview

1
Manchester City players

Man CityAston Villa go head-to-head at the Etihad

Manchester City and Aston Villa go head-to-head at the Etihad in the Premier League on Tuesday night in a crucial encounter in the race for Champions League qualification.

With five clubs being granted a berth in Europe’s top-tier competition, the task has become slightly more forgiving, but no less intense, heading into the final straight.

Following Saturday’s action, Man City and Villa had positioned themselves perfectly to ensure Champions League qualification again next season. Guardiola has now seen his side collect 10 points from four matches, keeping three clean sheets in that time, with recent defensive solidity proving to be the key factor in their upsurge in form.

The hosts have won 14 straight games against Villa at the Etihad, with that being the second-longest such run in Premier League history, with City also holding the best – 16 straight wins versus Newcastle.

While still not looking back to their very best, City are picking up results on a regular basis against clubs that have been in good form recently, and they will feel confident in repeating the feat against this tricky Villa side here.

This is Villa’s best chance yet to end their dreadful run at the Etihad, but they have flattered to deceive against fellow Champions League-chasing clubs this season, and could fall short again.

Barca get closer to La Liga title as they host Mallorca

Barcelona will be aiming to take another big step towards the La Liga title when they host Mallorca on Tuesday night.

Ferran Iorres, Barcelona

The Catalan giants will enter the match off the back of a 4-3 victory over Celta Vigo, which moved them seven points clear at the top of the La Liga table, while Mallorca occupy seventh, which is now a Europe League position in Spain’s top flight.

Barcelona are very much in charge of the title race at this stage of proceedings, and a hugely impressive La Liga campaign has seen them score 88 times in their 32 matches, so they are very much on for a century of league goals in 2024-25.

Barcelona are chasing a treble late in the season, preparing to tackle Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final next weekend, while they will face Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Eighth position is now a Conference League playoff spot, meanwhile, so Mallorca are very much on for a European finish this term, which would be an excellent achievement considering that the team finished down in 15th last season.

Mallorca are capable of making this an uncomfortable match for Barcelona, and we are expecting a close game on Tuesday evening in terms of the scoreline. That said, the Catalan giants should be able to navigate their way to another huge three points.

Valencia, Espanyol lock horns in an intriguing match

Two La Liga teams in impressive form will lock horns at Mestalla for an intriguing match on Tuesday evening, with Valencia welcoming Espanyol.

Valencia, who are 14th in the La Liga table, will bring a seven-game unbeaten run into the contest, while 13th-placed Espanyol have been victorious in their last three league games.

Javi Guerra, Valencia

Not too long ago, Valencia were in serious relegation danger, but that is no longer the case approaching the end of the campaign, with Los Che unbeaten in their last seven league games, recording four wins in the process.

Valencia have been impressive on home soil this season, picking up 27 points from their 16 matches in front of their own fans, but they have not actually managed to overcome Espanyol in La Liga since July 2020.

Each of the last four La Liga contests between the two sides have finished level, including a 1-1 draw in the reverse game earlier this season, while it was 2-2 in the corresponding fixture at Mestalla during the 2023-24 campaign.

Valencia finished ninth in La Liga last season – a top-half spot is still achievable this term despite their struggles, and Los Che will be bidding to end a largely disappointing campaign on a positive note.

This is set to be a fascinating battle between two in-form teams, and we are expecting it to be close in terms of the scoreline; home advantage could be key, though, with Valencia potentially navigating their way to all three points.

PSG chase unbeaten season as they travel to face Nantes

Paris Saint-Germain will continue in their pursuit of an unbeaten Ligue 1 season when they travel to the Stade de la Beaujoire to face Nantes on Tuesday night.

Marquinhos, skipper of Paris Saint-Germain

This game was rearranged last weekend in order to give PSG more time to prepare for their Champions League tie with Aston Villa, to the disappointment of those in the Nantes camp.

Even though the title is already sewn up, history still beckons for PSG, who are seeking to become the first club in Ligue 1 history to complete a full season unbeaten.

Luis Enrique‘s men are also resounding favourites to beat Reims in the Coupe de France final, while they are one of the red-hot favourites to win the Champions League this season, in what could be an unprecedented treble for a French club.

After not playing in Ligue 1 for two weeks, the champions returned to action at the weekend in a narrow 2-1 win at home to Le Havre, which was not pretty, but got the job done as another hurdle was cleared.

That also saw them win a 10th straight Ligue 1 game for the first time since the 2018-19 season, but next up are one of the few teams that have already taken points off them during the current campaign.

PSG have though found the net in 27 consecutive matches against Nantes, the longest run in the club’s history against a single opponent.

The reverse fixture saw Nantes arrest a five-game losing streak against the Parisians, but it is hard to see them repeating the feat, with six defeats in their last nine Ligue 1 games.

Reforms In NPP: Adutwum Proposes Expansion Of Electoral College

0
Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum, Former Education Minister

The immediate past Minister for Education, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum who, according to The Chronicle intelligence, will file to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary next year, has suggested to the national executives to expand the delegates system the party is using to elect its flagbearers.

According to him, the current procedure is preventing a number of loyal party supporters from voting to elect the flagbearer and other national officers and that, the status quo must change. Speaking on Nhyira FM, a Kumasi based radio station recently, Dr Adutwum said: “there are people who have served the party faithfully and continue to support it in various ways, yet they are denied a voice in leadership selection”.

He contended that loyal party supporters should not be relegated to the background when it comes to the election of party officers simply because they are not delegates. He suggested that every card bearing member of the party should be allowed to vote in internal elections of the party.

To him, expanding the electoral base would not only enhance participatory democracy, but also reduce dissatisfaction and protests over candidate selections, as more members would be involved in making those choices.

Dr Adutwum further told his listeners that he had been contacted by the chairman of committee, tasked to probe why the NPP lost the 2024 general elections, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, and expressed hope that his suggestions would be taken seriously during the review process of the report. He did not, however, state whether his call for the expansion of the delegates was part of the discussions he had with Professor Oquaye or not.

Hereiterated the importance of including long-standing and supportive party members, especially those active at the polling station level in future electoral processes, even if they are not official delegates.

The Former Education Minister cited a situation in his constituency where certain members who have served the party in various capacities are not able to vote because they are no more in office to back his case.

He called on the massive followers of the party not to lose hope and that, NPP would bounce back stronger if the reforms he had suggested are embraced.

He insisted on party unity as leadership strives to pick up the pieces for the task ahead.

Why Mahama Government Has Refused To Renew Goldfields Mining Lease

0

The John Mahama government has explained in details why it has refused to renew the mining lease of Goldfields Ghana Limited for the operation of the Damang Mines in the Western Region.

A press statement signed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, and released in Accra yesterday, said Goldfields in its renewal application failed to declare mineral reserves and also failed to provide a technical programme for the sustenance of the mine, in addition to failing to make budgetary allocation for exploration works.

The following is the full statement signed by the Minister;

Pursuant to Section 23 of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission, has taken a decisive step to assume operational control of the Damang Mine of Abosso Gold Fields Limited (AGL) upon the expiration of the thirty-year lease due on 18 April 2025.

This follows the unsuccessful renewal application by AGL, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited, which had halted active mining in 2023. AGL shifted to stockpile processing in 2024, indicating plans to continue this into 2025, with the remaining Life of Mine estimated by AGL at one year.

Goldfields Damang Mine

The Damang Mine’s return to state oversight marks a critical step in Ghana’s economic reset, ensuring its gold reserves directly benefit citizens and fuel long-term prosperity. This decision aligns with Government’s policy shift away from the neo-colonial posturing of automatic renewals of licenses for mining in Ghana, focusing instead on a thorough reassessment of mining licenses to ensure optimal national benefit. With that said, we are on the lookout for value propositions on the utilization of our mineral resources that align with the same.

It is imperative to note that while the government remains steadfast in its commitments, this decision was neither taken arbitrarily nor without due process. Rather, it was predicated upon cogent, empirically substantiated grounds, which include;

Failure to Declare Mineral Reserves: AGL failed to declare verifiable mineral reserves in its renewal application. According to Regulation 189 of the Minerals and Mining Act (licensing) Regulation, 2012 (L.I 2176), an application to extend a mining lease, among others, must include a comprehensive technical report and a program of mining operations.

Any such report should have verifiable mineral reserves indicating for example how many ounces of gold have been found and how much would be mined to justify the extension. Without a declared reserve, the Minerals Commission can’t recommend the extension of the lease.

It is instructive to note that the company’s 2024 Annual Reports which were published in March 2025, which is about a week after the Notice of Rejection was served on the Company has vindicated the Government’s position of the absence of reserves to support the extension of the lease.

Absence of a Technical Program: The application submitted by Gold Fields lacked a detailed technical program outlining past activities over the 30 years or future plans for the mine. Without this critical information, Government cannot properly assess the mine’s historical performance or proposed direction — a fundamental requirement for responsible and informed decision-making.

Lack of Budgetary Allocation for Exploration: Gold Fields has failed to allocate any budget for exploration at Damang over the past two years. In essence, the company was not prepared as required by law to expend resources to conduct exploration activities with the view to discovering new ore bodies or converting the mineral resources into mineral reserves to support a mining program of mining operations. This lack of investment raises serious concerns about the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices and the long-term viability of the mine.

In light of the aforementioned, and in the national interest, under Article 257(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the State shall assume oversight and operational responsibility of the Damang Mine effective 19 April 2025. Fundamental to this decision is the government’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted operations, protecting jobs, and honoring existing valid service contracts while ensuring compliance with legal and fiscal obligations and securing Ghana’s rightful benefits from this critical resource. To achieve the above, Government has outlined the following;

No Disruption, Only Continuity

To the hardworking employees, contractors, and service providers at Damang, your dedication has been the backbone of this mine, and it will remain indispensable. All essential services—from security to healthcare, fuel supply to camp management—will continue without interruption. Valid contracts will be honored, wages paid, and operations sustained as we work to regularize arrangements under the State’s stewardship.

Priority for Local Employment & Enterprise

Priority will be given to local workforce retention and community-based enterprises in line with Ghana’s Local Content Policy. This transition will prioritize local hiring and procurement, ensuring that opportunities in transport, labor, and auxiliary services first benefit businesses within the Damang catchment area.

Transparency & Engagement

A dedicated transition team will engage directly with all workers, contractors, and community leaders in the coming days to address concerns, provide updates, and collaborate on the way forward. Your voices matter, and this process will be guided by openness and the Rule Of Law.

Security & Stability Assured

The Government of Ghana is committed to enforcing strict protocols to ensure safety, orderly operations, and the protection of all assets. Unauthorized access or disruptions will not be tolerated. Together, we will uphold the integrity of this transition.

Reassurance & Patriotism

This is a moment of collective resolve, and we expect full cooperation from all stakeholders in this transitional period. The next chapter of the Damang Mine will be written with Ghanaian hands for Ghanaian benefit—guided by fairness, innovation, and our unyielding commitment to national progress. All actions shall comply with Ghana’s mining legislation and international investment protection agreements.

‘Bail granted to accused persons are free’

A judge has cautioned the public against the payment of money whenever the courts extend bail to accused persons.

Mrs Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa, a Judge at the Adentan Circuit Court said bail extended to accused persons were for free and “you don’t need to pay a dime. It is only when an accused person jumps bail that his or her surety or sureties would have to pay the bail sum involved. Report anyone who demands money,” she said.

The trial judge gave the caution when a 45-year-old businessman, Paul Konney, appeared before her on a charge of defrauding by false pretences.

Konney was alleged to have collected cash in the sum of GHC80,000 from one Eric Kristic under the pretext of purchasing assorted soft drinks to sell and return the money.

The accused and the complainant were to share the profit after the sale of the drinks. Konney has, however, denied the charge of defrauding by false pretences.

The trial judge admitted him to bail in the sum of GHC 100,000 with two sureties. The court ordered Konney to report to the investigator once a week (Wednesdays).

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, said both the accused and complainant were businessmen. It said in January 2025, Konney approached Eric Kristic with a business proposal that the two of them should go into soft drink selling and share the profit.

Prosecution said Kristic agreed after exercising due diligence by inspecting Konney’s warehouse and became satisfied with the products he saw.

The court heard that Konney requested GHC80,000 for the commencement of the business, based on which Kristic parted with GHC25,000. They both went and bought the assorted drinks for retailing.

The prosecutor said Konney then requested for the remaining GHC55,000, which the complainant gave to him. The accused, after obtaining GHC80,000 refused to answer the complainant’s phone calls and also refused to meet him.

“When the complainant visited the accused person’s office to inspect the goods he had bought, to his utmost surprise, all the goods had been sold but he did not pay a pesewa to the complainant,” prosecution said.

Upon a report made by Kristic to the police, the accused was called to go for additional GHC200,000 from the complainant and then he was arrested.

The prosecution said Konney admitted the offence in his caution statement saying that he used part of the money to buy three pieces of furniture and three office computers.

The accused, however, could not account for the rest of the money.

Use Easter to fight corruption, illegal mining & LGBTQI – Methodist Bishop

The Most Reverend Professor J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, Presiding Bishop, The Methodist Church, Ghana, has called on Christians to use the Easter season to renew their mind-sets on social challenges. The social challenges include bribery and corruption, illegal mining (galamsey) and LGBTQI practices.

He made the call in his Easter message to all believers, saying Easter was a season of hope and transformation.

He said Christians also need to start addressing issues like water pollution, carnage on roads, extreme partisanship and other abominable practices against Ghanaian cultural norms.

The Presiding Bishop said the Easter story was a powerful testament to God’s love and redemption, reminding Christians of the sacrifice and love of Jesus Christ.

“The Easter season facilitates a deeper intimacy in our walk with God and with one another,” he said.

Bishop Asamoah-Gyadu said the season also empowered Christians to live with hope, trust and forgiveness, focusing on life’s possibilities rather than limitations.

“By renewing our minds, we can triumph over fears and insecurities, live with honesty and integrity and consecrate our jobs to God, spreading peace and love,” he said.

Reflecting on the Easter celebration, he said Christians across the world pause at Easter to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ and reflect on his death and resurrection.

“We are always reminded at Easter that Jesus Christ rose from the dead and that he is with us as we walk along the road of life.

“On Good Friday, Jesus faced the worst that can happen to a person, a community, a nation and the world. Christ was betrayed by his friends, mocked, falsely accused and finally tortured and murdered.

“Maybe worst of all, he felt completely abandoned by those he had trusted. This was all because he stood for the truth. On this fateful day, it was truth that was crucified!” he explained.

Bishop Asamoah-Gyadu said Easter Day, however, showed that he had not been abandoned at all, and despite his feeling of loneliness, God was with him after all.

Loneliness, pain and suffering, he said, were real but could never separate Christians from God’s love, adding “Such unshakeable love frees us from fear and anxiety and releases us to do good for others.

“May the empty tomb remind us of the hope and promise of new life in Christ. May the resurrection power of Jesus transform our hearts, minds and lives. May His teachings guide us as we navigate the complexities of life,” he prayed and encouraged everyone to strive to live out the values of love, compassion and forgiveness that Jesus embodied.

The Presiding Bishop congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on his victory in the general elections and Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who is a member of The Methodist Church Ghana, saying the church was praying for the restoration of her health. GNA
