One hundred youth drawn from Obuasi and the surrounding communities for a one-year intensive training in welding and fabrication, mechanical engineering and electrical works under the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine have graduated.

The Youth Apprenticeship Programme was designed not only as a training initiative but also as a pathway to careers and livelihoods that will empower the youth and positively impact the mining communities.

It also equipped them with technical skills that can be deployed across the mining, oil and gas industries and other sectors within the extractive industry.

Mr. Edmund Oduro Agyei, Community Relations Manager of AGA, congratulating the apprentice graduates, also acknowledged their families, friends and loved ones for the encouragement, prayers and sacrifices they offered, which have played a key role in their training journey.

He noted that the youth in the company’s Apprenticeship Programme are not just learning a trade but are also gaining confidence, building networks and developing a sense of responsibility.

Mr Oduro Agyei encouraged the graduating apprentices to work hard and reach their full potential.

“Stay curious, stay ambitious and never stop improving yourselves,” he advised.

Mr Anthony Kwenin, Obuasi West Municipal Coordinating Director, noted that the training of the youth in acquiring skills is basically the responsibility of the municipal assembly or the local government and commended AGA for taking that responsibility on its shoulders.

He stated that the Assembly will team up with Nananom to get the apprentice graduates a place to ply their trade, noting that the Assembly can only develop when the local economy also develops.

The Krontihene of Adansi Dompoase, Kitikyie Bosompim Apenteng, who chaired the function, charged the graduates to venture into other mining areas in search of employment and not limit themselves only to AGA.

Mr Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, aka King Zubah, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolis, has donated 25 bags of rice as a personal gift to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prisons.

The gift follows his visit with some management members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The visit enabled the KMA team to discuss with the prison officials the possibility of engaging inmates for sanitation programmes in the metropolis.

Presenting the items to Chief Superintendent Kofi Takyi, the second-in-command of Kumasi Prisons, the mayor disclosed that the gesture follows his realisation during a previous visit that the inmates had not eaten rice for some time.

He promised that his wife would provide gallons of oil and tins of tomatoes to complement his effort and thus enable the inmates to enjoy their meals.

The minister emphasised that prison is a reformation centre and not meant as a punitive tool for the inmates and urged well-meaning citizens, philanthropists and civil society organisations (CSOs) to support the government in catering for the inmates.

Mr Ofori-Agyeman also expressed the need to shape public perception about people in prisons, noting that many inmates are there by accidents and misfortunes.

On this occasion, the politician cum medical doctor did not hesitate to roll up his sleeves and demonstrate his love for the stethoscope and provide medical care to the inmates and officers.

The event also allowed him to reconnect with his medical roots, while serving the people in a different capacity, which demonstrates his dedication to ensuring that healthcare reaches every corner of society, including those behind bars.

Dr Amoakohene, who said it was a fulfilling experience, emphasised the need to provide healthcare services to all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.

According to him, he is not only improving the healthcare and well-being of the inmates and officers but also contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

New terrorist group

Emir of Yashikira, Umoru Seriki, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, is distressed that concerned authorities have abandoned communities under attacks by a terror group named ‘Mahmuda’ allegedly occupying some parts of the Kwara North Senatorial District and Niger State.

Reacting to the development in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Sunday, Seriki lamented that “the situation is that we are totally demoralized, we are not happy with what the authorities are saying that there is no presence of terrorists in our domains.

“We are not happy and we feel abandoned by the government and left on our own, but as the situation is, we have no choice than to continue to defend ourselves.

“It is very unfortunate that we have complained about this thing earlier and nobody seems to pay attention to our plight.”

The attacks, according to the traditional ruler, are not only in Baruten and Kaiama local governments of Kwara state, but also Borgu Kingdom in Niger State.

Seriki, while confirming last week’s attacks by the terrorists, disclosed that the security vehicle bought by the people for operations by the vigilantes was bombed by the terrorists.

“We are just lucky that our vigilantes survived the attacks though some suffered some bruises.

“The casualties we suffered were not actually 15, but we suffered some casualties and the terrorists also suffered some casualties.

“So that is the situation, what the social media is actually reporting is the truth, we are just praying to God to help and protect us in the current situation we are facing,” he added.

DAILY POST recalls that the Kwara State Police Command last week refuted alleged emergence of a terror group named ‘Mahmuda’ within Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas of the state.

Pope Francis: We’ve Lost A Powerful Voice Against Injustice -Tinubu

0
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Pope Francis

President Bola Tinubu paid a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis, joining Catholics and Christians around the world in mourning his passing.

Below is President Tinubu’s statement on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis;

Today, with a heavy heart, I join the Catholic faithful and Christians worldwide in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a humble servant of God, tireless champion of the poor, and guiding light for millions. His passing, coming just after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, is a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.

His Holiness served the Church and the Master of the Church until the end. In 2013, he stepped onto the global stage with a message of mercy, urging us to see the face of Christ in the marginalised, the refugees, the migrants, and the forgotten.

He challenged the powerful to act with justice, called nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our common home—this Earth—is a gift we must protect for future generations.

He was an instrument of peace who deeply embodied the message of Christ: love for God and love for humanity. In a time of division, he built bridges between faiths and the rich and the poor.

He was a steadfast advocate for the developing world, where he consistently spoke against economic injustice and ceaselessly prayed for peace and stability in troubled regions.

His encyclicals were not only doctrinal and seminal but also timely and relevant. Through his pastoral letters, the Pope offered spiritual clarity and hope in an increasingly complex world. He charted a path of renewal for all humanity through his words and deeds.

In my 2025 Easter Message, I joined the Christian faithful in thanksgiving for the convalescing Pontiff. I was happy to watch his appearance to deliver the traditional Easter Sunday blessing in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Alas, the Lord called him home a day after, making the world lose its most trenchant voice for justice and action against climate change. May the good Lord, whom he served with all his might, receive him into His eternal bosom.

As we mourn the late Pontiff, let us also celebrate his legacy. Let us honour him not with words alone but with action: by lifting those who are down, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every person.

On behalf of the government and the people of Nigeria, I extend condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and the Christian faithful.

May God Almighty grant His beloved servant eternal rest.

Fight Galamsey without compromise -Minister

0
WR Minister Joseph Nelson (standing) addressing the central police command

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has called on the Western Central Police Command to recommit to fighting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, without compromise.
The minister expressed serious concern over reports suggesting some police officers may be accepting bribes from illegal miners.

At a meeting with the police leadership in Tarkwa, Minister Nelson warned that Ghana’s food security was under serious threat, due to the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies and arable land.

He indicated that, “On galamsey, there’s a lot to be done. As a regional minister I’ve heard both the good and the bad. While I’ve commended your efforts, I need to highlight the negative aspects, especially regarding the fight against galamsey.

“Our environment is being destroyed in the name of finding gold and making money, putting lives at risk.
“Some might think if water bodies are destroyed, we can afford bottled water. But that’s an unfortunate mindset. Galamsey’s consequences will ultimately affect us all and we’re already seeing its negative impacts on our health and lives.”

Regional Minister Nelson continued, “As leaders, we must care about the areas affected by galamsey, even if we don’t live there. The question is – should we prioritise short-term gains over long-term sustainability and the well-being of our communities?”

On the country’s food security, the minister emphasised that our country’s food security was in serious danger. This is because the land we once used to plant cassava and other staple crops is being threatened.
“When I hear that some of you are compromised in the fight against galamsey, I’m saddened. Just this evening, someone called me to complain that some officers are accepting bribes, ranging from GH₵2,000 to GH₵3,000. While money is important, it’s more fulfilling when earned honestly.”

Western Central Police Commander DCOP Desmond Boampong pledged to support the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
However, he cited intimidation from unknown individuals claiming to be members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a major challenge.
These individuals allegedly harass police officers whenever they make arrests.
DCOP Boampong appealed to the regional minister for assistance in addressing these incidents, which hinder the police’s efforts to combat galamsey.

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), Ghana Chapter, has officially launched its strategic plan for 2024–2028 and rolled out the second phase of its transformative partnership with the MasterCard Foundation.

Phase II is aimed at improving access to tertiary education for marginalised young women and men in Ghana.

The launch, held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, brought together dignitaries from government, academia, civil society and international development organisations.

The event served as a rallying call for deeper collaboration to achieve gender equity in education and promote inclusive, quality learning opportunities across Ghana and Africa.

In her keynote address, Dr Martha Muhwezi, Executive Director of FAWE, Africa, emphasised the importance of partnerships in achieving systemic change.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together. Our collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation is a testimony to what co-creation can achieve. We are not just continuing our work – we are deepening our partnerships and amplifying our impact.”

Dr Muhwezi outlined that the first phase of the MasterCard Foundation partnership opened doors for many disadvantaged youths, and phase two would build on those successes with greater ambition.

“We aim to ensure no girl is left behind and this requires governments, institutions and development partners working hand in hand,” she stressed.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President of Ghana, Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Dr Samuel Okofo-Akofo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gender-responsive education.

“Her Excellency sends warm salutations to all gathered here, especially those committed to empowering African children and youth, particularly girls, through education,” he conveyed.

He also highlighted Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s lifelong advocacy for education and her instrumental role in shaping the FAWE agenda and continental gender equity strategies.

Representing the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, Dr Officer Zakaria praised FAWE-Ghana and the Mastercard Foundation for their sustained impact.

“This event represents a renewed commitment to a cause at the heart of our national development. Empowering girls through education is not just an ideal—it is a necessity,” she said.

She announced that the ministry had reviewed and recommitted to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with FAWE to implement the second phase of the initiative, titled “Second Chance Pathway for Increased Access to Tertiary Education.”

The project will target marginalised young women and men and support their pursuit of STEM-related programmes aligned with the Ghana Education Strategic Plan.

“We are fully committed to implementing this plan, which is practical, inclusive, and visionary. It supports our collective goal to prepare youth—especially young women—for the demands of the 21st century,” Dr Zakaria added.

The launch was also graced by Aisha Ba, FAWE Africa Board Chair, who reiterated that “women and girls are the cornerstone of the world” and called for equal opportunities to enable them to thrive.

“Let’s challenge them and give them room to perform to the best of their abilities,” she urged.

In her solidarity message, Rika Rigamba, Country Director of the MasterCard Foundation, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with FAWE.

She reaffirmed the Foundation’s belief in youth potential and its continued investment in education as a tool for transformation.

Although Dr Rita Roy, President and CEO of the Foundation, could not attend in person, Dr Muhwezi lauded her visionary leadership, which has extended the FAWE–MasterCard partnership over 17 years.

The launch also celebrated the legacy of Professor Essie Sutherland-Addy, fondly referred to as “Aunt Essie,” for her decades-long service to girls’ education in Ghana and Africa. “She has been the cornerstone of FAWE Ghana,” Dr Muhwezi remarked.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees were reminded of Maya Angelou’s words: “Diversity makes for a richer tapestry.”

Dr Muhwezi urged all stakeholders to continue the collective journey toward a future where every girl in Ghana and across Africa has the opportunity to “dream without limits and the support to turn those dreams into reality.”

“I find peace in Ghana” –Co-founder of Tribe Meets shares deep cultural connection

Co-founder of Tribe Meets, Abby Osei Tutu

UK-based Ghanaian and co-founder of Tribe Meets, Abby Osei Tutu, has spoken candidly about the deep sense of peace and belonging she finds in Ghana, despite the country’s challenges.

Ghanaian fashion

Appearing on The Chat on Channel One TV on Saturday, April 19, Abby described her emotional bond with Ghana as spiritual and grounding, likening the feeling to none she has experienced elsewhere.

“I have always felt a deep connection with my culture. I could probably be the biggest fan of Ghana. I know Ghana has its issues, but there is a level of peace that I feel here that I just do not feel in any other country. I have travelled to a bunch of countries by myself, about seven, and yes, it is nice, but there is no feeling like the peace that I get when I am in Ghana,” she said.

Her reflections echo a growing sentiment among many in the African diaspora who see Ghana not only as a birthplace but as a haven for reconnection, cultural healing, and identity.

Abby’s journey mirrors the mission of TribeMeets, the platform she co-founded to help Africans in the diaspora rediscover their roots. TribeMeets supports relocation, fosters cultural identity, and builds strong, connected communities by bridging the gap between diasporans and the continent.

Through initiatives in entrepreneurship, cultural immersion, and networking, the platform is helping redefine what it means to “come home” to Africa.
