Editorial: Let’s reduce price of LPG to sustain RLPGPP

0
Editorial

In 2013, the government launched the Rural Liquefied Petroleum Gas Promotion Programme (RLPGPP) as part of its commitment to providing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) access to 50% of Ghana’s population by 2020.

Among other things, the programme sought to reduce the use of wood as fuel or fuel wood consumption among rural dwellers, which constitutes an existential threat to the climate change initiative.

It is in the light of this that about 170,000 rural households were targeted to receive LPG cook stoves by the end of 2017, to help make the programme a reality and to help safeguard the environment.

However, as at November 2017, an approximately 149,500 households, who were mainly rural dwellers, have been officially registered to have received the stoves. Though the initiative looked quite good to help to achieve the main purpose of the climate change initiative, it is sad to notice that the programme has woefully failed to achieve its objectives, due to several reasons.

Firstly, adaptation to the initiative, where beneficiaries would have to mainly use gas instead of fuel wood is a challenge, especially judging from the fact that there must first of all be a paradigm shift.

However, another major challenge facing the initiative is the fact that many urban dwellers have also resorted to the use of charcoal these days, due to the high cost of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The high demand for charcoal, as an alternative to gas, has led to the astronomical felling of wood for the production of charcoal to meet the demand in both rural and urban areas.

It is in view of this development that The Chronicle would like to associate itself with a statement made by the MP for Gomoa West, Mr. Richard Gyan-Mensah, that efforts must be made to reduce the price of LPG.

This stems from the fact that the wanton felling of trees, due to the high demand for charcoal, is viewed as one of the major elements that makes the environment susceptible to climate change, which is now a global phenomenon. This obviously contributes to climate change, massive flooding, destruction of crops, soil erosion, fewer crops as well as increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Additionally, the process of burning the felled trees to obtain charcoal also contributes to climate change because as it burns, it produces carbon dioxide.

Meanwhile, carbon dioxide contributes significantly to greenhouse gases which are mainly responsible for climate change hence our support for his call to sustain the use of LPG among both urban and rural dwellers.

In the view of the paper, the recent hikes in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG is detrimental to the sustenance of the climate change initiative.

For instance, a 14 kilogram cylinder costs more than GH¢200.00 due to the rippling effects we continue to face following the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia and Ukraine crises.

Admittedly, we are still not in normal times, which means that we must adjust to be able to bring the economy back on track but this must be done with more tactfulness so that we do not create another problem in our quest to solve the problem at hand.

Therefore, the cost price of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas must be looked at holistically, so as to reduce the high demand for charcoal, particularly among the urban users.

The 16-year-old is one of the learners abducted from the Federal Government College (FGC) in Birnin Yauri.

The young mother is among 11 remaining female students yet to be released.

On June 17, 2021, armed bandits invaded the boarding school, and took 100 students and eight teachers. A policeman was killed.

PR Nigeria was informed that a feast was held to celebrate the birth of the new baby.

A local source disclosed that two other students in captivity also gave birth to a baby girl and a boy.

“There are about four other female students who are pregnant at the moment. One of them is due to give birth any moment from now,”, he said.

One of the parents appealed to the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd) and Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Leo Irabor, to ensure their children’s release.

Ogun communities bicker over road under construction by government

The Aboro of Iboro, Abayomi Salako, has threatened to sue the Olu of Imasayi, Luqmon Kuoye, and his people over the naming of a road under constructiin by the Ogun State government.

The two communitites are neighbours in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.

But Mr Salako said the Imasayi indigenes are his tenants as the land they settled on was given to them by the ancestors of his Iboro people.

A few days ago, the Iboro community was left agitated after Mr Kuoye and his chiefs claimed at a press conference that the Igani Okoto-Ayetoro road, which is under construction by the state government, is in Imasayi territory.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that some residents had in 2021 attacked Iboro people who went to Imasayi to perform traditional rites on the disputed land.

While addressing journalists on the matter on Wednesday, Mr Salako said there should have been no dispute over the land because “the records are there for everybody to see unless you want to be partial.”

He continued: “Imasayi does not have a single plot of land on that road, so I am wondering how could the road be named Imasayi-Ayetoro road?

“There have been series of violence between Iboro and Imasayi and I told their monarch that I will not condone violence; anybody that fights will be reprimanded and that is my own point. There is no reason for it (violence). The government is there to look into it.

“Let the government come into the matter, if we disagree, then we go to court. There is no need for fighting, I don’t believe in that,” he said.

In his message to Mr Kuoye, whom he described as his brother, Mr Salako advised his colleague traditional ruler to seek knowledge about the disputed land from elders in his community.

“If they have any single plot in that place, let them come out with the proof, I will relinquish the land to them. I don’t fight for whatever that doesn’t belong to me, but he himself knows,” the Aboro said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Iboro Central Working Committee, Kolajo Owolabi, expressed surprise that the Olu of Imasayi was laying claim to the road being constructed.

As floodwater recedes, Delta communities worry over impact on health, livelihoods

Infant Jesus Iyase Nwagbo

Joseph Ifeanyi moved swiftly through the thick, dirty waters that had submerged a part of his neighborhood at Infant Jesus Area of Asaba, the capital of Delta State. Soon, the odoriferous smell of the dark-coloured, stinking water took over the atmosphere. If Mr Joseph was disturbed by the offensive smell, he didn’t care to show it. It was in the last week of October when devastating floods submerged many states across Nigeria, with disastrous consequences for Delta communities, especially those on the bank of the River Niger.

“Many people left this neighborhood when the waters came,” Mr Joseph began, stifling a tear.

“Many of the houses around here have been submerged in water and destroyed by the flood. There are reported cases of death in Asaba and other parts of Delta already. Many of our neighbors are now at IDP Camps in Ogbe-Afor. We don’t even know where others are as we speak. It’s a very sad situation.”

Mr Joseph soon moved to the bank of the Anwai river channel, ostensibly to go check his fishing net. He told this reporter that since the floods submerged the neighborhood, residents have vacated their houses and the few people who have remained sought relief in mundane activities such as fishing inside the makeshift pond on the bank of the river channel.

“We cannot go to IDP camp; well, I personally can’t go there because it’s not convenient,” he said.

“Since the waters have covered everywhere, we now fish on our street here and we ‘catch’ fishes and other things these days. Maybe it’s the flood that brought them here. Our fear is just about a disease outbreak from floodwater because some people in the neighborhood use the water to do house chores.”

Mr Joseph’s neighbourhood is located close to the teaching and research farm of the Delta State University’s Faculty of Agriculture, Anwai, Asaba

Court sacks Tonye Cole as APC governorship candidate in Rivers

Tonye-Cole

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on Thursday, disqualified the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, over dual citizenship.

Tonye Cole is said to be a citizen of the United Kingdom.

The court also ruled that the APC did not comply with the Electoral Act that brought in Cole as the candidate of the party.

The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State had approached the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission not to recognize Tonye Cole as the governorship candidate of APC for alleged dual citizenship and that the the delegate election that brought him did not follow due process having not been monitored by INEC.

Justice Emmanuel Obile in his judgment agreed with the People’s Democratic Party that Tonye Cole is not eligible to contest governorship position.

He thereafter directed INEC to delist the name of Tonye Cole from the list of eligible candidates for the 2023 Governorship election.

The decision of the court is however contrary to it’s earlier ruling on a preliminary objection in a suit by the APC against the PDP and it’s Governorship candidate Siminialaye Fubara.

In that suit, Justice Obile had ruled that the no party has the right to interfere in the internal affairs of other political parties and also said that the court has no jurisdiction to entertain that case.

Speaking to newsmen outside the courtroom, counsels to the PDP, Dike Udenna expressed happiness over the judgment which he said means that APC has no governorship candidate for the 2023 General election.

On his part, counsel to the APC, Collins Dike said the APC will challenge the judgement at the Court of Appeal.

He said the constitution of Nigeria allows him to contest the Governorship election having been born in Nigeria.

The lawyer said Tonye Cole “voluntarily acquired the citizenship of the United Kingdom” which does not prevent him taking part in the election.

I declined Sarkodie’s collaboration requests because he refused my handshake –Nasty C recounts

0
Sarkodie and Nasty C

Popular South African musician, Nasty C has opened up on why he does not have a collaboration with Ghanaian compatriot, Sarkodie.

In a rap performance, Nasty explained that it was borne out of an encounter he had with the ‘Country Side’ hitmaker some years ago.

He made this revelation in a freestyle he did during an interview on South Africa-based Metro FM.

According to him, on the duo’s first-ever interaction, Sarkodie rejected his handshake, a development which hurt Nasty C.

The SA rapper, who was budding at the time, swore to never agree to collaborate with Sarkodie if he ever grew bigger in stardom.

Essentially, the two rappers do not have a song together to date, which he says is in fulfillment of that pledge.

This is despite two different occasions where he says the Ghanaian rapper reached out.

But with the benefit of hindsight, Nasty C admits he was a coward for treating Sarkodie in that light.

This freestyle has, however, caused a stir on social media among fans from both sides.

Pakistan to appoint former spy chief as new head of army

0
Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir

Pakistan on Thursday named former spy chief Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as chief of the South Asian country’s army, ending weeks of speculation over an appointment that comes amid intense debate around the military’s influence on public life.

In a Twitter post, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said Munir’s appointment would be ratified once a summary sent by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif had been signed by the country’s president.

Munir, a former head of the country’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, will take over from Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, who will retire on November 29 after six years in what is normally a three-year post.

The Pakistani military is often accused of meddling in the politics of a country that has experienced numerous coups and been ruled by generals for extended periods since its formation in 1947, so the appointment of new army chiefs is often a highly politicized issue.
