Non-communicable diseases account for 43% of mortality in Ghana -Africa HPO

Africa Health Promotion Organisation (HPO), a Ghanaian non-governmental organisation that provides free healthcare to rural and peri-urban dwellers, has observed that non-communicable diseases (NCD) account for 43 per cent of mortality in Ghana.

Also known as chronic diseases, Africa HPO made reference to the World Health Organisation (WHO), which says NCDs are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behavioural factors and that it accounts for 74 per cent of global deaths.

To Africa HPO, an individual often does not know they are carriers of one or more NCDs until the person is diagnosed with some minor sickness, which eventually shows traces of a hidden NCD.

These NCDs live long with a patient and early detection through regular medical check-ups usually enables the patient to be mindful of their health lifestyle.

Examples of prevalent NCDs in most communities in Ghana include stroke, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and respiratory diseases.

To reduce these non-communicable diseases and save lives in parts of Ghana, Africa HPO, as part of its co-operate social responsibility (CSR), embarked on a five-day health screening initiative at Yilo and Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region.

The free healthcare services were to further support the people of Yilo and Manya Krobo as they prepare to celebrate their annual traditional festival.

The screening benefited students from the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, Yilo Krobo Senior High School, Manya Krobo Senior High as well as the Somanya and Odumasi communities.

During the exercise, Africa HPO detected other NCDs like HIV, Hepatitis B & C and Malaria, which the victims did not know until the tests were conducted and the results read to them. Immediately, the patients were linked up for treatment to slow down the progression of the diseases.

“Given what Africa HPO has observed here, I strongly believe that non-profit and non-governmental organisations must intensify their community-based health outreach programmes in the rural and peri-urban communities to promote public health to assist the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service in their effort to achieve ‘SDG 3,” Kisses Johnson Ahortor, the Executive Director of AfricaHPO, told The Chronicle.

In addition to Ultrasound scans, Fibroid, Cervical cancer, Prostate, Ear, Nose and Tongue (ENT), ante-natal and eye test-free screening services Africa HPO provided the people, it registered over 3,000 students and community members including children of the two Krobo areas, to the National Health Insurance Scheme. Sixty per cent of the beneficiaries were females.

Africa HPO held talks with the participants on healthy living and educated them on the right eating habits.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD), Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson lauded the initiative by Africa HPO and reiterated the importance of the activity.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Simon Tetteh, who monitored the exercise in the Municipality expressed gratitude to Africa HPO for organising the event, saying “Such events go a long way to help develop our communities and we will need more of such exercises to prolong our lifespans.”

The country’s universities have been charged to come out with non-plastic materials for packaging purposes, as a way to protecting the environment.

The Obuasi Area Head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr. Prempeh Adarkwa Yiadom, who made the call at the celebration of this year’s World  Environment Day at the AngloGold Club House at Obuasi, noted that the use of  plastics is causing a lot of harm to us as a people.

“It is time our universities come out with innovative ideas for packaging purposes rather than the use of plastics”, he stated. He recalled the days when materials used for packaging were eco-friendly, as the waste generated from these traditional materials easily decompose naturally and noted that plastics on the other hand have a long duration of decomposition which can take centuries, leading to huge build-up of waste in the system.

Mr. Adarkwa Yiadom noted that there are other innovative ways of recycling used plastics to benefit the society and called on individuals to support the recycling idea.

On his part, Mr. George Owusu Ansah, Senior Manager in charge of Environment at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mines noted that Ghanaians are literally choking on plastics in our societies and urged the people to collectively find sustainable solutions to dispose of plastics to save our environment.

He said AngloGold has supported the celebration of the occasion by organizing inter school debate between Obuasi Senior High Technical School and Christ the King SHS on single use plastics.

Mr. Owusu Ansah also said various basic schools in Obuasi are being taught how to use plastics to make bags and other items to benefit society.

Madam Emelia Asare of New Nsuta Basic School, in Obuasi, who was a beneficiary of a workshop sponsored by AngloGold Ashanti to train teachers on the use of used plastics for floral and other beautification works used the platform to thank the company and its partners for the gesture.

Police Seize Cocoa Beans In Oil Drums …smugglers arrested

COCOBOD

The Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) Intelligence Unit, together with the Asamankese District Police Command, has intercepted cocoa beans packaged in 35 oil drums for smuggling at Asuokaw, near Asamankese in the Eastern Region.

A total of 35 drums, which look like containing oil, but rather cocoa beans, were seized in a KIA vehicle with registration number ER 856-14 on Friday night, after a joint operation by the Cocobod and police team.

David Nartey, who claimed to be the owner of the vehicle, has been arrested and is assisting the police in further investigations.

The content and weight of one drum when opened by the team was about 144kg (two bags and 16kg), whilst all 35 drums have been sent to Cocobod headquarters to assess its quantity and quality.

Mr. Charles Amenyaglo, Director of Special Services, Ghana Cocobod, in an interview, said cocoa smuggling had been a business for some Ghanaians who go to the farmers and cheat them to get the cocoa beans for smuggling to neighboring countries due to differences in price.

According to him, Cocobod had recorded eight cases of cocoa smuggling recently in the Eastern Region, and just last and this week similar cases were recorded in Tepa, Elubo, Afloa and Ho.

Mr. Charles Amenyaglo called on Ghanaians to support Cocobod to fight cocoa smuggling by giving tip offs to the police.

One feared dead as pirates hijack two passenger boats in Rivers

A female passenger has been feared dead after suspected pirates hijacked two boats along the waterways of Rivers State on Monday.

The passengers were said to be travelling from Abonema to Kula, both in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state, when the pirates struck mid-sea.

The maritime union workers said the boats were each carrying 12 passengers, most of whom jumped into the river in a bid to escape abduction.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Nigeria Maritime Union Workers in Rivers State, Nigeria, Israel Pepple, expressed worry that attacks along the waterways have resurfaced.

People said he was notified about the incident by some of his unit officials, who put calls through to him.

He stated, “My unit chairman in Abonnema and that of the Kula unit called to my attention that two of their boats were hijacked by pirates.

“So the information they gave us initially was that a lady was also taken away out of the 24 passengers.

“But at about 12 p.m., they called back to inform me that the lady was dead and that she was floating on the water.

“They later went and carried her. As I speak with you, she (corpse) is in Abonnema, and they have reported the matter to the marine police in Abonnema.”

He appealed to the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, to prioritise security along the waterways.

“For now, we are talking about security. You have to secure the waterways. The waterways must be secured for us, our passengers, and goods to move.

“That is the most important thing. So let them beef up the security. We need more gunboats and we need increased security patrol from the joint task force, especially the checkpoints.

“We have earlier proposed that houseboats and security personnel be positioned in some strategic areas so that when this attack happens, they can communicate and stop these criminals from getting away.

“But if you go around, you will see that the houseboats are kept only where the Federal Government interests are and not the interests of the people.”

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing.

“Yes, we are aware, but no arrest for now.. investigation is ongoing to apprehend the culprits and make them face the law,” she stated.

The Senate has approved the request of President Bola Tinubu to appoint 20 Special Advisers.

President Tinubu’s request was read on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan

Commenting on the request, Lawan said it is of “utmost urgency” that the President has his team to work with.

“Because there is no name for special advisers we will just approve it from here. We feel that that this is something of utmost urgency,” the senate president said.

The development came days after Tinubu announced the appointment of Femi Gbajabiamila, outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, as his Chief of Staff, and Senator George Akume, former Minister of Special Duties as his secretary to the government of the federation (SGF).

APC can now correct past misdeeds – Wike

0
Former Governor, Nyesom Wike

The former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the ruling All Progressives Congress government has been handed another opportunity to correct what he described as their past misdeeds against Nigerians at the expense of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Wike disclosed this during a live media chat, Tuesday at the state capital, Port Harcourt.

“APC should be jubilating that God has given them an opportunity at the cost of PDP. God gave APC the opportunity to repent from the sins they committed against Nigerians,” Wike said.

The former governor again faulted the PDP for failing to follow its zoning principle which he said cost them the February 25 presidential election and gave the APC the chance to emerge victorious.

He also asked critics to show support for the current administration in delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

“God gave them this opportunity now and they want to bungle it again by bringing in crisis,” he said.

“If Mr. President doesn’t have a smooth administration, at the end of the day, who suffers? Is it, not Nigerians? Let us believe that we are all one, let us give everyone a sense of belonging.”

When asked if he would accept an appointment from President Bola Tinubu, Wike declared he is not begging for one but will be interested in what capacity he will function in if offered.

“First of all, I am not lobbying for an appointment, for Christ’s sake. And I can’t only be important because you have given me an appointment. I mean, you should look at it very well.

“Two, Mr. President has not called me. With due respect, if Mr. President calls you and says, I want you to serve. Maybe I will ask, in what capacity do you want me to serve? And he says it, I say okay, thank you, sir.

“Look I have a political team, I have a family, I won’t just sit down without talking to anybody and say oh Yes. Look, look, I am not begging for an appointment.

The media chat was coming less than 24 hours after Wike alongside former Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi and Senator Godswill Akpabio met with Tinubu behind closed doors at the Aso Villa.

World Bank gives Ghana $150m to fight poverty and school feeding

Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone

The Government of Ghana has received $150 million additional financing from the International Development Association (IDA) for the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2 (GPSNP 2) to expand and enhance social safety nets and provide access to productive income generating opportunities for the poor.

It also introduces support to Ghana’s largest social assistance program, the Ghana School Feeding Programme, which reaches 3.6 million children in public kindergartens and primary schools across all 261 Municipal, Metropolitan, and District Assemblies.

As part of Ghana’s program with the IMF, the Government of Ghana has made commitments to safeguard and increase social spending to protect the poor and vulnerable during this time of fiscal distress.

Ghana’s social safety net programs supported by GPSNP 2 are central to protecting the consumption of the poor, improving food security, and increasing productivity and human capital. However, given recent fiscal challenges, release of payments for government-funded social protection programs have largely been delayed.

“The World Bank is happy to support this project with additional financing in these times of macroeconomic challenges to enable it to meet its commitments on social spending and maintain critical social assistance programs while the country works towards fiscal recovery,” said Pierre Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

“This support is also consistent with Ghana’s overall vision for development as stated in the Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies (2017–2024) and the Government’s vision for Ghana’s social protection sector, including productive, gainful employment for the poor”.

The project builds on its predecessor and previous World Bank financed projects (since 2010), supporting the Government of Ghana to strengthen its social protection system and increase transparency and efficiency to maximize program impact.

The project will also provide technical assistance to identify potential sources of sustainable social protection financing. It will assist the government to safeguard and improve regularity of payments within the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and Ghana School Feeding Programme and provide employment opportunities to about 32,000 caterers and cooks in addition to providing a daily meal for school-going children.

The GPSNP 2 additional financing also seeks to increase funding under the LEAP to support the government in meeting its budget commitments for an increase in the transfer value to the targeted 350,000 beneficiaries, given its major erosion due to inflation in the past year.

It will scale up the Productive Inclusion Intervention by providing sustainable livelihoods to 60,000 beneficiaries (up from 25,000 currently) and expanding access to the Labour-Intensive Public Works short-term employment program to 90,000 beneficiaries (up from 60,000 currently).

It will also raise the level of the productive grants in line with inflation. This will significantly increase poor people’s incomes, savings, spending on food and other essentials, and increase their productive assets like livestock.

“The GPSNP 2 is timely given that poor and vulnerable individuals are mostly affected by national and global shocks like the one we are facing,” said Christabel E. Dadzie, Senior Social Safety and Jobs Specialist and Task Team Leader for GPSNP 2. “Through this effort, we will ensure that critical social protection programs and systems are maintained, and targeted urban poor are also provided with support. Intentional support will be given to vulnerable groups including persons with disabilities.”

The GPSNP 2 will also provide technical assistance to identify potential sources of sustainable social protection financing.
