Actress and socialite, Rosemond Brown, professionally known as Akuapem Poloo has shared her personal journey of converting from Christianity to Islam.

Akuampem Poloo expressed her struggles in adapting to the Islamic religion, which prohibits certain activities that she was accustomed to as a Christian. She spoke of the difficulties she faces in reconciling her former behaviors with the new norms dictated by her faith.

She highlighted that attending the Mosque has significantly influenced her mindset and behavior, making it inconvenient for her to engage in twerking and other wild dances that were part of her previous persona.

Battling the internal conflict between her past and present selves has posed a genuine struggle for her as she seeks to align her actions with her newfound religious beliefs.

Nonetheless, Poloo acknowledged that embracing Islam has opened doors of opportunity for her. She expressed her deep satisfaction in fulfilling her long-time dream of meeting the National Chief Imam, an esteemed figure in the Islamic community. Through her conversion, she had the privilege of engaging with the Chief Imam and experiencing a profound sense of fulfillment.

Poloo shared a memorable experience where her status as a Muslim earned her respect and a special invitation to the Suhum Odwira Festival. This cultural event provided her with a unique opportunity to interact with high-profile individuals, including the Vice-President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Stonebwoy’s wife addresses rumours surrounding her role in husband’s management team

Wife of Stonebwoy, Dr Louisa Satekla

Dr. Louisa Ansong Satekla, wife of Afro-Dancehall musician Stonebwoy has addressed rumours surrounding her role in her husband’s management team which many point to her as the cause of the cracks.

In clarifying her role, she said that she manages the ‘Livingstone Foundation’ and not the Stonebwoy brand itself.

In an interview on ‘The Day Show,’ the Dentist wife of Stonebwoy expressed her surprise at how the assumption came about, stating; “I manage the ‘Livingstone Foundation,’ but Stonebwoy has an entire management team. I don’t know where that story originated from, but everyone seems to have believed it. I think one time he made an inside joke about ‘Management 101,’ and from that day on, people just assumed I was the manager.”

As a mother of two, Dr. Louisa believes that managing Stonebwoy alone would be challenging, adding that; “For now, I have a lot on my plate, so managing Stonebwoy will be difficult because he is a huge brand. I think a team works better.”

The misconception about Dr. Louisa’s role as Stonebwoy’s manager has persisted for years, stemming from previous changes in Stonebwoy’s management team.

In 2017, Stonebwoy split with Karl Gid, their former manager, due to a dispute over revenue sharing, and Blakk Cedi took over as his official manager.

In 2019, Stonebwoy confirmed a split with Blakk Cedi, stating that Blakk Cedi currently serves as his agent after a restructuring within their camp. While acknowledging significant changes in their management structure, Stonebwoy refrained from disclosing further details to the media.

US Court orders additional Black minority votes in Alabama

US Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Alabama officials to redraw the state’s congressional map to allow an additional Black majority district to account for the fact that the state is 27% Black.

The decision – that affords additional opportunities for minority voters to elect the candidate of their choice – comes as a surprise given the conservative majority on the court. Alabama currently has seven congressional districts, with six represented by Republicans.

Supporters of voting rights had feared that the court was going to make it harder for minorities to challenge maps under Section 2 of the historic Voting Rights Act.

Chief Justice John Roberts penned the opinion for a 5-4 majority, siding with the court’s three liberals. Justice Brett Kavanaugh agreed with the key parts of the holding, providing the fifth vote.

In recent years, Section 2 has been instrumental in paving the way for minority voters to more fully participate in the political process

Bangladesh suffers long power cuts amid worst heatwave in decades

Children cool off in Bangladesh

Abdur Rahman nearly fainted while pulling his rickshaw under the scorching sun in Bangladesh’s capital city. “It is not possible to continue doing this in such weather,” he told Al Jazeera. For the last few weeks, the slum in Dhaka where Rahman lives has hardly had any electricity at night.

A crippling power crisis has added to the misery of the Bangladeshis as they reel under the country’s longest heatwave in decades.

Tens of thousands of primary and secondary schools have been shut down by the government this week as temperatures surged to more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in Dhaka. Other cities such as Rangpur recorded a high of 41 degrees Celsius – the highest there since 1958.

Officials at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said they had not seen such a prolonged heatwave since the country’s independence in 1971.

Australia to ban Nazi symbols in bid to curb far right

Members of the National Socialist Network perform Nazi salutes

Australia plans to introduce new laws banning the public display and sale of Nazi symbols and paraphernalia as the country sees a rise in the far-right movement.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said on Thursday that the government would introduce laws criminalising the display and sale of Nazi motifs, such as the swastika – one of the most recognisable symbols of Nazi propaganda – and the lightning bolt insignia of the SS (Schutzstaffel), the paramilitary wing of the Nazi party.

The law will ban such symbols from use on flags, armbands or printed on clothes. A ban on the Nazi salute will not be added to federal law, instead it would be up to individual states to make that decision, Dreyfus said.

“There is no place in Australia for symbols that glorify the horrors of the Holocaust,” Dreyfus said. The legislation will be presented to parliament next week and is expected to pass with opposition support.

Australia’s spy agency has been warning that far-right groups are on the rise in Australia and that they had become more organised and visible.

India slams Canada for parade float showing ex-PM Gandhi’s murder

Late Indian PM, Indira Gandhi

India has hit out at Canada for allowing a float in a parade depicting the 1984 assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards, perceived to be a glorification of violence by Sikh separatists.

“I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence,” India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told reporters in New Delhi while commenting about the tableau in a parade.

Canada’s High Commissioner in India also condemned the incident at a parade by Sikh activists in the Canadian city of Brampton.

Video circulated in recent days on the internet showed a tableau from the parade featuring Gandhi wearing a blood-stained white saree with her hands up as turban-clad men pointed guns at her. “I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,” Cameron MacKay said on Twitter.

Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by two Sikh bodyguards after she allowed the storming of the holiest Sikh temple. The storming of the temple angered Sikhs around the world.

People run away after a bomb explosion at the Mosque

An explosion near a mosque in northern Afghanistan killed at least 11 people at a memorial service for the Taliban’s provincial deputy governor, who died in an attack earlier this week, officials said.

A former Taliban police official was among those killed and more than 30 others were wounded in the explosion near Nabawi Mosque on Thursday, according to Abdul Nafi Takor, the Taliban-appointed spokesman for the interior ministry.

Takor said there were concerns that the number of casualties could rise further.

The explosion happened during the memorial service for Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, the deputy governor of Badakhshan who was killed in a car bombing on Tuesday. That attack in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, also killed the deputy governor’s driver and wounded 10 other people.

Moazuddin Ahmadi, the Taliban official in charge of information and culture, said Safiullah Samim, a former Taliban police chief in Baghlan, was killed in Thursday’s blast.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack, saying in a tweet that the bombing of mosques is an act of “terrorism” and goes “against human and Islamic standards”.

Cuba gives China permission to build spying facility -US intel says

Chineses Leader Xi Jinping and Cuban president Díaz-Canel

Cuba has agreed to allow China to build a spying facility on the island that could allow the Chinese to eavesdrop on electronic communications across the southeastern US, a source familiar with the intelligence told CNN.

The US learned about the plan in the last several weeks, the source said, and it is unclear whether China has already begun building the surveillance facility.

It would not be the first time China has attempted to spy on the US’ electronic communications, known as signals intelligence. A suspected Chinese spy balloon that transited the US in February was capable of gathering signals intelligence and is believed to have transmitted back to Beijing in near-real time, sources told CNN at the time.

In that case, the US took steps to protect sensitive sites and censor intelligence signals before shooting down the balloon. But it is unclear what the US can do to stop the construction of a Chinese spying facility in Cuba.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the new intelligence about the facility.

The US also conducts spying missions near China, using reconnaissance aircraft that routinely engage in electronic eavesdropping.

Cold and Flu Home Remedies

0
Cold and Flu Home Remedies

To ease cold and flu symptoms, you can try home remedies such as a bowl of chicken soup or a cup of hot ginger tea with honey. Taking echinacea, vitamin C, and probiotics may also boost your immune system.

Treat your cold at home

Being sick, even when you’re home in bed and off work, isn’t fun. The combination of body aches, fever, chills, and nasal congestion can be enough to make anyone miserable.

There are plenty of home remedies that can alleviate your symptoms and get you back to normal. If you still feel sick after a few weeks, make an appointment with your doctor. And if you have trouble breathing, have a rapid heartbeat, feel faint, or experience other severe symptoms, get medical help sooner.

Chicken soup

Chicken soup may not be a cure-all, but it’s a great choice when you’re sick.

Enjoying a bowl of chicken soup with vegetables, prepared from scratch or warmed from a can, may slow the movement of neutrophils in your body. Neutrophils are a common type of white blood cell. They help protect your body from infection. When they’re moving slowly, they stay more concentrated in the areas of your body that require the most healing.

Low-sodium soup also carries great nutritional value and helps keep you hydrated. It’s a good choice, no matter how you’re feeling.

Ginger

The health benefits of ginger root have been touted for centuries, but now we have scientific proof of its curative properties. A few slices of raw ginger root in boiling water may help soothe a cough or sore throat. Research suggests that it can also ward off the feelings of nausea that so often accompany the flu.

Honey

Honey has a variety of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Drinking honey in tea with lemon can ease sore throat pain. Research suggests that honey is an effective cough suppressant, too.

You should never give honey to a child younger than 1-year-old, as it often contains botulinum spores. While they’re usually harmless to older children and adults, infants’ immune systems aren’t able to fight them off.

Find a variety of honey on Amazon now.

Garlic

Garlic contains the compound allicin, which may have antimicrobial properties. Adding a garlic supplement to your diet might reduce the severity of cold symptoms. According to some research, it might even help you avoid getting sick in the first place.

More research needs to be done on the potential cold-fighting benefits of garlic. In the meantime, adding more garlic to your diet probably won’t hurt.

Echinacea

Native Americans have used the herb and root of the echinacea plant to treat infections for more than 400 years. Its active ingredients include flavonoids, chemicals that have many therapeutic effects on the body. For example, flavonoids can boost your immune system and reduce inflammation.

Research on the herb’s effectiveness in fighting the common cold and flu has been mixed. But one 2020 study suggests that taking echinacea may help treat common cold symptoms in children.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C plays an important role in your body and has many health benefits. Along with limes, oranges, grapefruits, leafy greens, and other fruits and vegetables, lemons are a good source of vitamin C. Adding fresh lemon juice to hot tea with honey may reduce phlegm when you’re sick. Drinking hot or cold lemonade may also help.

While these drinks may not clear up your cold entirely, they can help you get the vitamin C that your immune system needs. Getting enough vitamin C can relieve upper respiratory tract infections.

Probiotics

Probiotics are “friendly” bacteria and yeast that are found in your body, some foods, and supplements. They can help keep your gut and immune system healthy, and probiotics may reduce your chance of getting sick with an upper respiratory infection.

For a delicious and nutritious source of helpful bacteria, include probiotic yogurt in your diet. Besides its potential benefits for your immune system, yogurt is a healthy snack that provides plenty of protein and calcium. Look for products that list live bacteria on the label.

Other options

Salt water

Gargling with salt water may help prevent upper respiratory infections. It may also decrease the severity of cold symptoms. For example, it may ease sore throat pain and nasal congestion.

Gargling with salt water reduces and loosens mucus, which contains bacteria and allergens. To try this remedy at home, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a full glass of water. Swish it around your mouth and throat. Then spit it out.

Vapor rub

You might not like the smell, but some old-fashioned topical ointments, such as vapor rub, appear to reduce nighttime cough in children older than 2 years. Just one or two applications before bed can help open air passages to combat congestion, reduce coughing, and improve sleep.

Vapor rub is gaining traction among some doctors who encourage parents to avoid giving over-the-counter cold medicines to young children because of unwanted side effects.

Humidity

Influenza thrives and spreads more easily in dry environments. Creating more humidity in your home may reduce your exposure to this flu-causing virus. Increased humidity may also reduce nasal inflammation, making it easier to breathe when you’re sick.

Temporarily adding a cool mist humidifier to your bedroom may help you feel more comfortable. This is especially true in winter when dry indoor heat can exacerbate your symptoms. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil might also stimulate your breathing.

Remember, the water used in humidifiers needs to be changed daily to stop mold and other fungi from growing. For the same effect without a humidifier, take a long shower or linger in a steamy bathroom.

Warm baths

Sometimes you can reduce a child’s fever by giving them a warm sponge bath. Warm baths can also reduce cold and flu symptoms in adults. Adding Epsom salt and baking soda to the water can reduce body aches. Adding a few drops of essential oil, such as tea tree, juniper, rosemary, thyme, orange, lavender, or eucalyptus, may also have a soothing effect.

Staff of the Sunyani municipal assembly at the durbar

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Techiman North in the Bono East Region, Mr. Everson Addo-Donkor, has distributed 316,000 cocoa and 10,000 economic tree seedlings to 1,250 farmers.

This is in fulfillment of the government flagship programme, Planting for Exports and Rural Development (PERD), in the district. The three communities include Aworowa, Krobo and Buoyem.

In a short ceremony, the DCE encouraged more youth to venture into agriculture to enhance their living conditions.

The selection of the three communities was as a result of the vegetation of the areas, while other breeds of seedlings have been given to other farmers in various communities which have benefited from the programme after its introduction in the first term of the government.

710 farmers from Aworowa received 146,000 cocoa seedlings and 4,500 economic trees (framoo).

The seedlings for distribution

Another 305 farmers from Krobo took delivery of 9,200 seedlings and 2,000 economic trees, while 78,000 seedlings and 3500 economic trees were distributed to 235 farmers at Buoyem.

Sunyani Assembly

In another development, the Sunyani Municipal Assembly (SMA) in the Bono Region has held a durbar with a call on the staff to improve upon work punctuality and attendance to boost the development objectives of the Assembly.

The durbar was organised to address the shortcomings and challenges of staff, and also find ways of addressing them. It was also a platform to allow staff to air their concerns and grievances, and possibly offer constructive suggestions to help achieve the goals and objectives of the Assembly.

In his opening remarks, the Sunyani Municipal Coordinating Director, Dr. Philip D. Baazeng, commended the staff for their commitment and sense of duty over the period, and urged them not to shirk their sense of duty and commitment to work.

He prevailed on all hardworking staff not to relent on their exemplary conduct, while urging them to stick to their work ethics, such as punctuality, honesty, teamwork, integrity, and professionalism among others.

Mr. George Obeng Manu from Vanguard Life Assurance educated the staff on a new health insurance policy, Nationwide Insurance Policy, to be rolled out for staff of the Local Government Service (LGS) to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He said that the scheme will serve as a fallback for conditions not covered by the NHIS and encouraged workers who qualify to sign up for the policy as it will go a long way to help them seek better and quality healthcare.

Mr. Manu encouraged staff to always take advantage of staff durbars to air grievances and make contributions for the development of the assembly and municipality as a whole. The staff commended management for the durbar and called for more of such platforms for engagements to bridge the communication gap between staff and management.
