Tinubu, APC kick against INEC staff’s bid to give evidence in Atiku’s petition

President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday, vehemently kicked against the bid by the former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku to engage ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to give evidence in his petition challenging the declaration of Tinubu as winner of the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku in the bid to establish the alleged irregularities against the election had subpoenaed three ad-hoc workers of INEC to give first hand account of their experiences during the presidential election of February 25.

He had specifically requested them to offer explanations on how the results of the presidential election results were transmitted.

However, Tinubu, represented by Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, objected to the use of statements made on oath by the witnesses to be tendered at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in aid of Atiku’s petition.

The grouse of the President and the APC was that the statements of the ad-hoc workers were not front loaded at the time of filing the petition.

Olanipekun, SAN, who cited several provisions of the law against the use of the witnesses argued that since they were subpoenaed by Atiku as the petitioner, he ought to have front loaded their statements on oath along with the petition.

He asked the Court to reject the witnesses and discontenance their statements on grounds of violating the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Tinubu’s arguments against the subpoenaed witnesses were adopted by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who stood for the APC and Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN, who appeared for INEC.

G5 members meet Tinubu at Aso Rock

Members of the G5 arrive at the Presidential Villa

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with a group of aggrieved politicians within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) known as the G5 or the Integrity Group.

In attendance at the meeting at the Aso Rock are one serving governor and four former governors within the party. They are Governor Seyi Makinde (Oyo) as well as former Govenors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

The current governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah was also present.

The G5, who were all two-term governors before four of them handed over on May 29, 2023, formed an alliance after the party’s presidential primary in May 2022 to demand that the then PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu step down for a southern replacement as a precondition to support the presidential ambition of the party’s flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar in the February 25 poll.

Both Atiku and Ayu called the then governors’ bluff and did not succumb to their demands in the just-concluded elections.

Interestingly, Ortom, Ikpeazu, and Ugwuanyi attempted to cross over to the Senate which has been described as a ‘retirement home’ for former governors but the trio lost their senatorial bid in the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections. Only Makinde won an election among G5 members.

For a number of times, Tinubu met with Wike and Makinde before the elections.

For the presidential election, Atiku lost in all the G5 states while Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi won Enugu and Abia, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) raked in Oyo, Benue and Rivers.

Nigeria loses N150bn to gas flaring in four months –NOSDRA

0

Oil and gas companies operating in Nigeria flared 92.3 million standard cubic feet of gas, mscf, worth an estimated N150.8 billion, between January and April 2023.

The figure was contained in a recent National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) report.

It represents a 79.5 per cent increase against 50.3mscf of gas flared in 2022.

Consequently, the oil-producing firms responsible for this flaring are expected to pay penalties of $184.6 million (an equivalent of N85.7 billion) for breaching the gas flaring laws in the four months.

The report also noted that the volume of gas flared in the four months is equivalent to 4.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emission and has a power generation potential of 9,200 gigawatts of electricity per hour.

On a month-on-month basis, the report noted that in January, February, March and April, 23.2 mscf, 27.1 mscf, 25.9 mscf and 16.1 mscf of gas were flared, respectively.

Adehyeman, Ghana Commodity Exchange partner to support farmers

Adehyeman, Ghana Commodity Exchange partner to support farmers

Adehyeman Savings and Loans Limited (Adehyeman) is partnering the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) to offer commodity-backed loans to farmers under a Warehouse Receipt Financing Scheme.

Under the scheme, farmers can use receipt of their commodities stored at GCX warehouses to access loans from Adehyeman with their commodities at the warehouses serving as collateral.

This arrangement also means interested farmers could store their commodities at a certified warehouse, secure the loan, and repay after selling the farm produce.

Mr. Joe Emmim, Managing Director, Adehyeman Savings and Loans Limited, said they were pleased to offer support to farmers as they faced challenges accessing financial support to upscale their operations.

“We see the agricultural sector of the economy as key to ensuring food security in the country and for export to generate foreign exchange to grow the economy.

“It is against this background that we are stepping in when others deem the sector risky and, therefore, shy away from providing the needed financial support to make farmers realise their full potential,” he said.

Mr. Emmim expressed the hope that farmers would take full advantage of the opportunity and avail themselves to secure loans to upscale their operations.

Mr. Robert Dowuona Owoo, Chief Operations Officer, Ghana Commodity Exchange, said the partnership would address the financial challenges farmers faced in their work.

He said the GCX had three main components – connecting farmers to markets, providing storage for their farm produce and providing financial access, saying, their access to finance challenge would be addressed by the partnership.

He urged the financial institution to be “considerate” in its interest charges and rates on the loans for farmers. The Ghana Commodity Exchange is a spot trading platform company that links buyers and sellers of agricultural products to trade.

Farmers store their produce at the warehouses of the Company, while GCX connects them to markets. The Company’s key goal is to link Ghanaian smallholder farmers to agricultural and financial markets in Ghana and across the West Africa Region to ensure farmers secure competitive prices for their commodities.

Financing has become a critical barrier for farmers, especially smallholder farmers with financial institutions shying away from providing financial support to them, some describing the farmers as a risky group due to fears of default in loan repayment.

Payments for Petrol Stations In Ghana Tingg by Cellulant In-Store solution is transforming the digital payments space in Ghana by providing Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) with a single payment collection point across multiple payment options and channels, ensuring real-time settlement. For OMCs in the country, this advancement enables them to reduce customer queues at the till and improve customer satisfaction.

In recent years, Ghana has experienced remarkable growth in its mobile money market, with over 50% of the adult population having mobile money accounts, emerging as a leader in sub-Saharan Africa. This has sparked the rise of multiple payment platforms and solutions tailored to meet the diverse requirements of businesses and consumers nationwide.

However, despite this remarkable growth, making and receiving payments remains a major pain point for many businesses in the country operating at scale. For businesses, the obstacle lies in establishing individual connections with multiple payment methods from different card networks to mobile money service providers to gain access to online and offline payments from these various methods.

To address this challenge, Cellulant, a leading pan-African payments technology company, launched Instore on its digital payments platform, Tingg, which enables businesses to collect payments from different payment options at the point of sale without the need for costly hardware or software.

Particularly for OMCs, where one company has multiple branches across the country and multiple tills in a single branch, the ability to offer a seamless payment experience has a decisive impact on revenue growth and customer satisfaction.

According to Eric Kortey, Cellulant Ghana’s General Manager, “With Tingg, the OMCs can track and reconcile transactions more easily, reducing the risk of fraud and errors. This level of transparency and accountability helps to build trust between businesses and their customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders, which is essential for business success.

We power payments for businesses, enabling them to focus on their core business functions and growth. At Cellulant, we believe enabling businesses to collect and payout seamlessly is critical to the growth of the economies they operate in and Africa at large.”

Star Oil, Zen Petroleum, Glory Oil, Nick Petroleum, Petrosol, Shell (Vivo Energy), BF Petroleum and GTA (Groupe Trans Africa) are some of the OMCs Tingg by Cellulant is powering payments for in Ghana.

Customers who fuel at these fuel stations can pay for their fuel via USSD, QR code or the Tingg App. In-store, Tingg’s offline payments solution is available in all the physical locations for these fuel stations requiring customers only to have a mobile device, and they can conveniently pay without using cash.

For these OMCs, Tingg has increased its efficiency in collections and managing transactions by more than 50%.

In addition to integrating payments, the Tingg platform offers a reporting and settlement dashboard with a single view of all collections from all channels and the opportunity for businesses to connect with and engage with customers using the Tingg messaging tools.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources,  Samuel A. Jinapor has called on Ghanaians and residents of Ghana to join government and his Ministry in the tree planting exercise on Friday, June 9, 2023, with a charge on them to not only pickup the seedlings, but also do well to plant and nurture it unto maturity.

The Minister in an interview on Thursday, 8th June 2023, on Joy FM’s morning show said nurturing the trees to maturity is as important as planting and that he noted is the reason for downsizing this year’s Green Ghana target to 10 million seedlings.

He stated the road map for the Green Ghana Day, pointing out that planting on June 9th will commence with the President’s Commemorative planting at the University of Ghana Legon, after which some other dignitaries will plant concurrently in various regions across the country.

“Otumfuo will be planting, Yaa Naa will be planting, the National Chief Imam, the Chief of Staff and other key stakeholders like the Ambassadors in Ghana will also be planting,” he added.

The Minister also revealed that Parliament has suspended its session on the Green Ghana Day to allow all parliamentarians lead their constituents to plant.

Answering a question on the survival rate of seedlings, the Lands Minister said about 80% of seedlings planted in 2021 have survived whilst 70% survived in 2022 and that he said is quite appreciable but was quick to add that there’s more room for improvement.

The Minister, in his submission, announced that distribution of seedlings has started and encouraged all to visit the various pick up points in the country to pick up theirs.

He named some of the pickup points to be the Forestry Commission Head Office, Regional and Districts offices of the Forest Services Division, the Ministry and the malls.

Jinapor also named the tree seedlings available for pick up, outlining them as, fruit trees such as, Mango, Guava, Coconut and some ornamental plants with timber species and oil palm as well.

He applauded Ghanaians for the support so far and also appreciated the efforts of the Green Ghana Planning Committee and all other partners and stakeholders for making government’s aggressive afforestation and reafforestation agenda a success.

CHRAJ holds Workshop on National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights

A National Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on the development of a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP on BHR) in Ghana, has ended with the private sector stakeholders engagement at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi.

The ‘NAP on BHR’ is a requirement on Ghana to be able to implement the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in Ghana.

Members, officials of the NAP Steering Committee including Mrs. Nartey and Edward Kareweh (in smock)

Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), in collaboration with the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice is ensuring its implementation with sponsorship from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and OXFAM.

Mrs. Mary Adjeley Nartey, Director of Human Rights at CHRAJ, who is also the Co-chairperson of the NAP Steering Committee, remarked that Ghana has ratified most of United Nations Human rights Instruments or treaties and, therefore, under obligation to protect, respect and fulfil the fundamental human rights and freedoms of all persons in Ghana.

She said the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2011, adopted the United Nations Guiding Principles (UNGPs) on Business and Human Rights.

Mrs. Nartey explained the UNGPs simply as a “global framework to ensure that States perform their obligation to protect the fundamental human rights of all persons in their country, businesses comply with all existing human rights laws or regimes both internationally and national and to address human rights abuses arising out of the negative impacts of their business”.

The Human Rights Director mentioned some of the negative impacts of business operations as air pollution, oil spillages, pollution of water bodies, environmental degradation, destruction of farmlands which affects livelihoods, child labour, gender discrimination and inequalities among others, as well as providing effective ways to remedy same.

A resilient NAP, she said, requires inclusive and participatory approach for a sustainable implementation through the engagement of public and private sector actors across the country, and therefore called for full participation for a successful engagement.

Lawyer James Mensah, the Regional Director of CHRAJ, in a brief welcome address entreated the stakeholders to make meaningful inputs into the National Action Plan.

During the break-out session, stakeholders through the guidance of some members of the steering committee brainstormed on varied   human rights abuses at their various work places and recommended possible ways to curtailing same.

‘Don’t be naïve, Funny Face and I still share a strong connection’ – Vanessa insists

0
Funny Face and Baby Mama (Ama Vanessa)

Funny Face’s baby mama, Vanessa Nicole, is continuing to address the criticism she faced in the aftermath of her interview with Kwaku Manu.

The interview sparked controversy as Vanessa hinted at a possible reunion with the father of her children, Funny Face. However, netizens expressed concern, suggesting that this might negatively impact Funny Face’s ongoing mental health recovery.

In response to the overwhelming backlash she received online, Vanessa decided to share her thoughts in a live Instagram video.

With a visibly frustrated demeanor, she expressed her disappointment in those who criticized her decision, labeling them as unwise and ignorant. Vanessa firmly believed that she and Funny Face shared a strong bond that could not be broken by outsiders.

Asserting her position, Vanessa emphasized that her relationship with Funny Face went beyond what people knew. She pointed out that they were parents to three children, a fact that held significant weight in her decision-making process.

Vanessa argued that any rational person would understand her desire to reconcile with the father of her children, especially considering the special connection they shared.

“I am not a hypocrite,” Vanessa passionately declared during her live video. “Nana Yaw did not accuse me of harming him anywhere. I am not foolish; I am a mother. Most of you won’t comprehend my situation. Between Nana Yaw and myself, we faced challenges, and people failed to understand the context of the interview.

But let me make one thing clear. We have three beautiful children together—three solid kids! No one in their right mind would condemn my decision to want to reconcile with him. There is a significant difference between a man you date and a man you have children with, let alone twins and our youngest, Tawiah.”

Vanessa urged her critics to consider the deeper connection that still existed between Funny Face and herself, even if mistakes were made in the past. She highlighted the love Funny Face had for their children and stressed the importance of nurturing that bond.
