Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on Sunday said coups will no longer be allowed in the West African region under his leadership as chairperson of the sub-regional bloc, ECOWAS.

“We will not allow coup after coup in the West African sub-region. We will take this up seriously with the African Union, European, America and Britain,” he said in his acceptance speech adding that “we will take it up, it is a challenge.”

Between August 2020 and now, five coups have occurred in three West African countries – Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea with attempts in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau foiled.

Nigeria’s neighbour to the North, Chad, had an unconstitutional change of government led by Lieutenant General Mahamat Idriss Déby after his father’s death in 2021.

Mr Tinubu noted that although democracy is very tough to manage, it is the best form of government and countries of the region should ascribe to it.

“I make a pledge here that in furtherance of our region’s economic recovery and growth, we will commit to democracy and promote democracy and the rule of law. I am with you and Nigeria, we are back,” he pledged.

Acknowledging that he is the new kid on the block, the new Nigerian president said ECOWAS must bite back and cannot sit as a toothless bulldog adding that, “we will work collectively to pursue inclusive economic integration of the sub-region.”

Mr Tinubu emerged as the new chairperson of ECOWAS at the regional body’s summit held in Guinea-Bissau on Sunday.

He takes over from the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Embalo, who finished his tenure at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Bissau, the capital city of Guinea-Bissau.

The summit is the first international engagement of President Tinubu on the African continent since his swearing-in on 29 May.

If Tinubu offers me ministerial position, I’ll never take it –Fayose

Ayo Fayose

A former Governor of Ekiti State Ayo Fayose says, despite his admiration for President Bola Tinubu, he “will never” accept an offer of a ministerial position. Having spent six weeks in office since his inauguration, Tinubu has yet to disclose his choice of ministers.

There has been much speculation over the possible naming of members of the Peoples Democratic Party considered to be instrumental to his emergence as president.

Fayose, who made a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, expressed his support for the President, saying, “I didn’t start to work for Asiwaju today,” though he is a longstanding member of the opposition.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart argued that his show of solidarity with Tinubu, one of the powerbrokers of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was “not for party politics but for my belief in his person”.

“Let me tell you, I am not looking for a position,” he added.

Asked if he would accept a hypothetical ministerial job offer from Tinubu, the former governor said, “I will never take it.”

He explained that “many of us who have reached the age of 70, almost 65 and above” should be asked to “go and bring our children, our grown-up children, well educated”.

Fayose is 62 years old.

“Already, their future has been stolen. The future of these young people has been stolen. They have run over their time with our time,” he added.

“Let me tell you very straightforward, if the future is for these young people, Asiwaju, to my own view — and I shared this with him and I say it again — it should be 40 percent for oldies like us, 30 percent for women, 30 percent for young people.”

According to him, a majority of the older generation of politicians has had a taste of government “more than three, four, five times”.

In a unanimous endorsement that signals the trust and confidence reposed in him by his counterparts, President Bola Tinubu emerged the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

President Tinubu, who is the latest entrant into the exclusive club of Heads of State in West Africa, enthusiastically accepted the honour, on behalf of Nigeria, with a solemn pledge to bear the responsibility of the office and run an inclusive administration of the regional organisation.

The Nigerian leader, however, warned that the threat to peace in the sub-region had reached an alarming proportion with terrorism and emerging pattern of military takeover that now demand urgent and concerted actions.

He said insecurity and creeping terrorism were stunting the progress and development of the region. President Tinubu called for a collective action from member-states, pledging that under his leadership, frameworks would be harmonized to actualize the dreams of ECOWAS.

“On peace and security, the threat has reached an alarming level, and needs urgent actions in addressing the challenges. Indeed, without a peaceful environment, progress and development in the region will continue to remain elusive. In this regard, we must remain committed to the utilisation of all regional frameworks at our disposal to address the menace of insecurity,” he declared.

President Tinubu noted that ECOWAS had developed a security architecture, which he noted, “covers a wide range of areas that involved kinetic and non-kinetic operations, including preventive diplomacy. There is also the Regional Plan of Action on Fight against Terrorism 2020-2024 as well as the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force on Fight Against Terrorism.

RMU Students Call For Support For Maritime Innovations

0

Students of the Regional Maritime University are calling on government, NGOs, and Agencies within the maritime sector of Ghana to partner the school in key engineering projects that will provide sustainable solutions for societal problems.

The students of the marine engineering department, as part of their final year projects, have come up with samples of wind turbines, solar powered fishing boats, fiber-glass canoes among other innovations, in light of global safety and decarbonization needs.

Speaking on Eye on Port, Mr. Alex Kojo Abayateye, SRC President of the Regional Maritime Institution (RMU) provided in-depth information on the inventions, their uses and the advantages they provide the maritime industry as a whole.

“Some of the innovations are Dovetail lifebuoy, the Wind turbine and Remote Operated Vessels (ROV) which help to save sailors in a “man overboard!” situation, provide renewable energy, and construct installations beneath the sea by FPSOs respectively,” he said.

Additionally, he added that local production of these inventions would lower the frequency and expense of importing these equipment.

A Graduate Assistant at the Regional Maritime University, Mr. George Obeng, advocated that if Naval Architecture course is made to be studied in tertiary institutions it will be a step in the right direction because the course offers a variety of career paths for students who enroll in the said course.

He went on to discuss the employment opportunities the course provides, mentioning the importance of environmental preservation and the construction of ships and vessels for the development of the country.

Additionally, he gave a quick overview of the most recent advancements made by the naval architects of the Regional Maritime Institution (RMU) and how they can benefit society.

To buttress the points, he made earlier, Mr. Abayateye continued by discussing the competence of the naval architects and how their experience is required for the use of these new technologies.

A student at the Regional Maritime University, Mr. Joseph Yaw Sarblah, shared his perspective on the frequent incidents on the Volta Lake, outlining their causes and potential solutions.

He identified the primary contributory factors to these accidents as being inadequate boat operator training, overloading and poor boat maintenance.

“The marine business is so meticulous that the personnel who fill particular tasks need to be well-equipped in order to avoid future issues,” he said.

He urged regulatory authorities like the Ghana Maritime Authority to ensure that the requirements set forth for boat operators to follow are strictly adhered to.

Investing in the innovations of the naval architects would help the marine industry solve problems, according to Alex Kojo Abayateye.

He proposed that Agencies in the maritime sector offer scholarships to students who wish to register in courses related to the maritime industry.

According to him, this will encourage more people to enroll in the course and encourage the development of new ideas that the industry needs.

Mr. Obeng appealed to the players in the maritime industry to collaborate with naval architects from the RMU to address the difficulties facing the industry.

The students of the maritime education and training institute appealed for funding, capacity building among other things to scale up these innovative works for the development of the sector.

The Harbour Master of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Captain Francis Kwesi Micah who joined the discussion via phone commended the students responsible for the creation of the various inventions, saying that their actions should inspire other students to cultivate the habit of being innovative.

He touched on how such innovations by the students would be of immense benefit to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals and revenue generation.

Floods cause havoc in Ho Township

The Volta Regional capital, Ho, experienced heavy downpour last Saturday, resulting in flooding of the Township.

The rain, which fell for about three hours, flooded the main business centre of the capital, popularly known as ‘Civic Centre’,as the main storm gutter around Togbe Afede’s palace could not contain the water.

The devastating floods

However, no life was lost, but properties were destroyed.

The intensity of the flood, which was described by residents as historic, also destroyed bridges and culverts in the Alele and SDA area.

The Civic Centre, the heart of business activities in the Municipality, became a restricted area for more than two hours, even after the rain stopped, preventing vehicular and human movement.

The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Divine Richard Komla Bosson and a team of experts from the Assembly and personnel of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) visited the flooded area to sympathise with the victims.

Mr Bosson, who briefed the media after visiting the flooded areas on Sunday, July 9, 2023 said preliminary assessment of the situation showed that some storm drains in the town were weak and could not contain the flood waters.

The Ho MCE said the Assembly would provide solutions to the problems within the capacity of the Assembly. He also promised to draw attention of the central government to the issue.

Mr Bosson said it was identified after the tour of the flooded areas that people living along the drains use them as refuse dump, whilst others have also built on waterways.

He, therefore, called on residents to be alert, particularly those living near gutters, culverts and bridges, and to relocate whenever it is raining until major repair works are done.

He also charged the Environmental Department of the Assembly to ensure that those who farm along the drains and also dump waste materials into them are arrested and prosecuted.

A flood victim at Ho-Bankoe, Mr Paul Abah, whose home was flooded, attributed the development to a construction work going on in the area.

Chief of Ho-Bankoe, Togbe Adu Bobi VI, said the people of the area would help the Assembly to prevent people from farming and building on waterways.

Jim Iyke

Nollywood Actor, Jim Iyke, has revealed that his marriage with three children failed marriage but not many people know about it.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Jim Iyke stated that his marriage failed due to the death of his mother, adding that he was the cause of his marriage failure.

He said, while grieving over his mother’s death, he emotionally abandoned his partner, who recently gave birth to his first son.

He said, “I have had a failed marriage but nobody knows that. I have three kids. I caused my marriage to fail. I am not the type that would blame anybody for my mistakes. There is a saying, ‘to boss up, own up’, There is a part of me that would take the easier route out.

“Anytime I did anything mediocre in my life, I always did it when I was emotional because I am extremely proficient in being deliberate and being strategic about everything I do.

“Every time I failed; it was because I got emotional. I became mediocre then I appeal to the smaller man in me and the part that was not emotionally intelligent.”

Adding; “When I lost my mother, I could not find my feet for years. There was a lifestyle, spiritual connection that I lost. It took them 72 hours to tell me that I had lost my mother. I just got out of an interview in London.

“There is always that one person in the family that is a deliverer of bad news. The person who does that in our family said he would not break the news to me because there is a great chance, I would not make it.”

On how his mother’s death impacted his relationship with his wife and son, the actor stated, “Just when I was getting over it, my woman was pregnant with my first son. I had a quiet space, there was nobody around me to take care of me anymore.

There was nothing all of a sudden and the grief hit me. The loss hit me and I could not sleep for days. I was irritated and was not the loving man she met.

“I am a goofball, forget the perception out there. I am the prankster of the family and the guy that starts the laugh at the most serious issue. They don’t even invite me to family meetings because I start with a joke then my father calls me to order.

“I lost my sense of humour, the lion in me and the leader in me. I just gave myself to the elements, so she suffered for that. I became an obsessive dad. I took everything in me to my son.

“I was changing diapers; I was the proper stay-home dad. I took everything to him and left her behind. I took all my love and attention and invested it in my son and left her behind. I was an excellent father and a woeful husband. They are white, they are not built like us.

“After a while, she said, I can’t find who I married. Then we parted as friends. I told her, ‘I am here but I am not here. There is no presence here. I don’t know what it would take me to heal and bring myself back here but if you want to wait for me, I will appreciate it and if you can’t I will understand’. She said she can’t.”
