Donald Trump sues E. Jean Carroll for defamation

Donald Trump has sued E. Jean Carroll for defamation after a jury found he sexually abused the former magazine columnist and defamed her.

In a counter claim filed Tuesday night, Trump alleges that Carroll defamed him when she appeared on CNN the morning after the jury awarded her $5 million in damages. Carroll was asked about the verdict finding Trump sexually abused Carroll but did not rape her as she alleged. Carroll said, “Oh, yes he did.”

In response to the new claim, Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan said in a statement, “Donald Trump again argues, contrary to both logic and fact, that he was exonerated by a jury that found that he sexually abused E. Jean Carroll.”

She added, “Trump’s filing is thus nothing more than his latest effort to delay accountability for what a jury has already found to be his defamation of E. Jean Carroll. But whether he likes it or not, that accountability is coming very soon.

The counter claim is the latest legal salvo in a multi-year legal battle between Trump and Carroll. Carroll first sued Trump for defamation in 2019 after he denied her allegation that he raped her in the mid-1990s in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman. Trump said he didn’t know Carroll and that she wasn’t his type.

She sued him again last year under a New York law that allowed a one-year window for civil lawsuits for survivors of sexual assault no matter when they occurred. Trump has moved for a new trial.

The 2019 defamation lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial next year, although there are still several legal issues outstanding. Carroll is seeking more than $10 million in damages in that case in part because Trump repeated statements the jury found to be defamatory after the verdict on social media and at a CNN town hall.

Drinking Water before Bed

0
Drinking water before sleep

You may not want to drink water directly before bed. Avoid drinking water or any other fluids at least 2 hours before sleeping to prevent waking up at night.

Is drinking water before bed healthy?

You need to drink water every day for your body to function properly. Throughout the day — and while sleeping — you lose water from breathing, sweating, and passing stool from the digestive system.

Some people drink a glass of water before bed to remain hydrated through the night. But researchers question whether or not drinking water before bed is healthy.

Water and the interrupted sleep cycle

Drinking water before bed can increase the amount of times you need to urinate at night.

Your urine output decreases at night, allowing you to sleep six to eight hours without interruption. Drinking a glass or two of water before bed can change this cycle.

Sleep deprivation can also adversely affect your heart health. Lack of sleep can influence one’s potential for developing:

  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol levels
  • weight gain

According to a 2019 study, adults who slept fewer than six hours at night were at an increased risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Age can also play a role in your sleep and urinary cycle. The older you become, the more likely you will develop an overactive bladder. This could be related to medical conditions that can affect urinary bladder function, such as declining cognitive function due to dementia, or a stroke that will make it difficult for your brain to communicate signals to your bladder. Diabetes mellitus and benign prostatic hypertrophy can also affect your urinary bladder function.

2 benefits of drinking water before bed

  1. Improved mood

According to a 2014 study, water deprivation can negatively impact your mood, which could affect your overall sleep-wake cycle.

The study examined a total of 52 high (22) and low (30) fluid volume intake subjects. People who normally drank a lot of water weren’t as calm and didn’t feel as many positive emotions when they couldn’t drink as much as they normally did.

Those with a low fluid intake showed an increase in positive emotion, satisfaction, and calmness when they increased their water intake.

  1. Natural cleanser

Drinking water — specifically hot or warm water — is one natural way to help detox the body and improve digestion.

Warm water increases blood circulation, helps your body to be able to break down waste, and increases sweat output. Sweating will cause you to lose some fluid through the night, but it will also remove excess salts or toxins and clean the skin cells.

Drinking warm water before bed will keep you hydrated through the night and may help the body to rid itself of unwanted toxins. It may also help to relieve pain or cramping in the stomach.

If plain water is too bland or if you’re trying to beat a cold, consider adding lemon to you water before bed. This can give an interesting flavor to the water, and lemon also contains vitamin C, an added benefit that can help to boost your immune system as it fights infection.

When is the best time to drink water?

Drinking water before bed has a number of benefits, but drinking too close to bedtime can interrupt your sleep cycle and negatively impact heart health.

You must drink enough water throughout the day to avoid dehydration and prevent excess water intake at night. One sign of dehydration is dark urine. If you’re drinking enough water, your urine should be light yellow to clear in color.

Drinking eight glasses of water a day is a helpful goal, but that number can vary from one person to the next. You may need to drink more water depending on your activity levels, the weather, or if you’re pregnant.

Some best practices for staying hydrated include:

  • increasing your vegetable and fruit intake, since they contain a heavy percentage of water
  • drinking a glass of water with every meal
  • drinking water before and after exercise
  • drinking water when you’re hungry because sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger

Christian Atsu Educational Centre commissioned in Senya Beraku

0

The Christian Atsu Educational Centre was officially commissioned on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, in Senya Beraku, a community located in the Central Region of Ghana. The school was built for the less privileged.

Christian Atsu, a former winger for the Black Stars, had undertaken the project before his untimely demise.

Tragically, he was among the victims of the devastating disasters that struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023.

In honor of his memory and dedication, Atsu’s former clubs, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Everton, rallied together to complete the construction of the educational facility in his hometown.

Contributions from Atsu’s former clubs were supplemented by generous donations from various individuals and organizations through the Arms Around The Child Foundation.

The combined efforts ensured the completion of the Christian Atsu Educational Centre, which now boasts modern educational facilities to serve the local community’s children.

Equipped with state-of-the-art educational resources, the facility aims to empower young minds and offer them opportunities for a brighter future.

Bayern Munich ‘to table improved £80m bid for Harry Kane’

Harry Kane

Bayern Munich are reportedly preparing to place an £80m offer on the table for Harry Kane in the hope of convincing Tottenham Hotspur to sell the centre-forward.

The 29-year-old’s future remains the subject of much speculation, with his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium only having 12 months left to run.

Real Madrid and Manchester United have both been heavily linked with the England captain this summer, but the former appear to have now cooled their interest, while the latter are not hopeful of convincing Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell to a Premier League rival.

Bayern have emerged as genuine candidates for the forward, with the Bundesliga champions said to have had a £60.2m offer for his services rejected earlier this week.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Munich giants are still hopeful of agreeing a transfer fee with Tottenham and are now planning to raise their offer to around £80m.

Jacobs, though, claims that Tottenham are still preparing to reject any offers that arrive despite the fact that the forward could leave on a free transfer next summer.

Bayern decided against signing a replacement for Robert Lewandowski during last summer’s transfer window, but they are planning to bring in a centre-forward in the current market.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani is also thought to be on their radar, but Kane is said to be the club’s leading target, and they are now seriously exploring bringing him to Munich.

The Englishman was again in excellent form for Tottenham last season, finding the back of the net on 32 occasions in 49 appearances in all competitions, in addition to contributing five assists.

Ghana coach Ibrahim Tanko laments short rest period after humiliating defeat to Morocco

0
Black Meteors coach, Ibrahim Tanko

Black Meteors coach, Ibrahim Tanko, has attributed his team’s disappointing defeat against Morocco to fatigue resulting from a lack of sufficient rest ahead of the crucial match.

Tanko expressed his belief that the players were deprived of the necessary recovery time, having played their opening game just 48 hours before facing the formidable Moroccan side.

Ghana experienced a demoralizing 5-1 loss to the host nation on Tuesday night, significantly diminishing their chances of progressing to the semi-finals in the Olympic qualifying tournament.

With their hopes hanging by a thread, the team now faces a must-win situation against Guinea in their final group stage match in order to advance to the next stage.

Reflecting on the defeat, Tanko conceded that Morocco’s victory was well-deserved, but emphasised the impact of fatigue on his players’ performance.

“We had one day of rest while they had two days. The players showed fatigue,” lamented the coach.

Tanko also acknowledged that the team had approached the match with great respect for their opponents, but were ultimately punished for it.

Tanko further highlighted a similar instance involving Congo, who suffered a similar fate against Guinea due to their opponents’ extra day of rest.

This pattern, according to the coach, underscores the significance of adequate recovery time in maintaining the players’ physical and mental sharpness throughout the demanding tournament.

Black Meteors now find themselves in a precarious position, requiring a victory against Guinea to keep their hopes alive. The team will undoubtedly need to address the issue of fatigue and ensure their players are well-rested and prepared for the crucial encounter.

IGP Dampare interacting with political party leaders

The Dampare-led police administration has held a crunch meeting with the leadership of political parties taking part in the Assin North by-election today, to stop potential disturbances during the polls.

At the instance of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the meeting was held on Monday, June 26, 2023 in the Assin North Constituency to enhance the working relationship among stakeholders.

The leaderships of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the referee, the Electoral Commission (EC), were present at the meeting.

Aimed at a “peaceful election,” as stated in a statement issued by the Police, the meeting assured the political parties and the general public that “adequate security measures” have been put in place.

The security measures, the statement noted, are “to ensure security, law and order before, during, and after the election.”

The stakeholders present at the meeting outlined some concerns, which the Police say have all been factored into the final security strategy for the election.

Meanwhile, the Police have also cautioned the public against false reportage, particularly on social media, which has the potency to breach the peace, adding that the Police are on wild alert to crush the culprits.

“We wish to urge the people of Assin North constituency to go about their normal activities freely, including going out to exercise their civic duty of casting their vote,” the Police statement said.

ASSURANCE

The National Chairman of the NPP, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, took to his Facebook page on Monday, after the meeting, to assure the general public that his party was committed to a peaceful poll.

“Consequently, we have tasked our officers, supporters and sympathisers to conduct themselves in that regard. As our motto depicts, NPP upholds the tenets of development in freedom. We’re resolute for victory!” he wrote.

EC PREPARED

Meanwhile, the EC says it is prepared for the Assin North by-election today, with its personnel assigned to about 90 polling stations.

The Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has indicated that the Commission has made adequate provisions to deal with the rains, in order not to disenfranchise any of the voters.

According to him, the EC personnel are conversant with the terrain and where there is flooding, they would use other means to reach the electorate.

He mentioned that the EC would use vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles and any other means possible to ensure election materials arrive safely at the polling stations.

He stated that voting would commence at 7 a.m and end at 5 p.m for sorting, counting, collation, and declaration of the final results.

The by-election is being contested by the NPP, NDC and LPG.

absa Case: Six accused persons surrender to police

0
Court

Though counsel for one of the accused persons in the absa Bank case is accusing the media of failing to follow the ethics of the profession, the prosecution has given them thumbs up because their reportage helped to get some of the other accused persons who were at large.

The Prosecuting Officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah, told the court, presided over by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, yesterday, that because of the reports by the media, some of the accused persons reported themselves to the police.

In the light of that, he prayed the court to adjourn the case for investigation caution statements to be obtained from the accused persons – six in all – to enable the prosecution amend the charge sheet and the brief facts.

The suspects, who reported themselves to the police, are Nicholas Nii Sai, Nana Kwesi Gyimah, Benjamin Adoari, Joseph D. Anim and Othniel Amankwah Dankwah. The police are hunting for five more suspects – Clinton Asamoah, Kwame Owusu Buadu, Daniel Osei, Boadu Nana Yaw Adjei, Ernest Aryee and Isaac De-Here – who are suspected to be on the run.

When the case was first called last week, the prosecution produced the first accused persons, Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie (A1), Cecil Nyamesem Agyarkwa (A2), Michael Tweneboah Oppong (A3), Richard Akinis (A4), Fouad Mohammed (A5), and Celeb Bondah (A6).

Despite the prosecution’s view on the media reportage, the defence counsel contended that the reportage on the case did more harm than good, especially by putting the accused persons’ names and ages in the public domain.

The counsel also told the court that the media published the images of the accused persons, including video footage. And, on June 6, when the case was first called, they (counsel) were not aware that reporters were present in the court.

The defence counsel argued that in other jurisdictions, accused persons’ names are not published, but referred to as A1, A2, A3, and in that order. He went further to state that some of the media reportage had pronounced the accused persons guilty, which was unprofessional on their part.

According to him, the accused persons were businessmen, and by virtue of the reportage, they may be declined an opportunity to travel outside the country, because the embassies often dug into the backgrounds of applicants before issuing them visas.

He, therefore, urged the court to caution journalists following the case to report accurately on the matter.

The Chronicle, which first broke the story, did not publish any videos or pictures of the accused persons in question.

Earlier, the court, in granting the counsel’s prayer, did not bar journalists from reporting on the case, but urged that only certified court reporters should be allowed in the court room,  as well as insisting on factual representation of proceedings.

Currently, 12 out of the 17 accused persons have pleaded not guilty.

Nevertheless, Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie (A1) is the only one facing all 13 counts.

With the exception of A1, the other 11 accused persons were granted bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with four sureties each. Two of the sureties should earn an income of not less than GH¢2,500 a month, as well as deposit certified copies of their Ghana Card with the court registry.

The case has been adjourned to Thursday, June 29, 2023, for continuation.

Background

The prosecuting officer narrated to the court that Nana Addo Ampem-Darko, Head of Fraud Detection and Operations at absa Bank Ghana Limited, is the complainant in the case.

According to him, A1 is a resident of Labone, and until May this year, was contracted as Processing Officer at the bank.

He added that Cecil was 26 years old and a student at the University of Ghana, Legon, Richard, 31, a trader, Michael, 25, also a trader, Fouad, 32, a System Administrator, and Caleb, 25, an entrepreneur.

Those at large are; Clinton Asamoah (A7), Kwame Owusu Buadu(A8), Nicholas Nii Sai (A9), Nana Kwesi Gyimah (A10), Benjamin Adoari (A11), Daniel Osei (A12), Boadu Nana Yaw Adjei (A13), Joseph D Anim (A14), Ernest Aryee (A15), Isaac De-Heer (A16), and Othniel Amankwah Darkwa (A17).

He told the court that Al was employed by absa Bank as a contract staff in the month of February 2022, and was posted to the Osu branch as a Processing Officer, whose job description was to assist customers in loan processing, T-bill processing, debit card processing, dormant account activation, and customer account maintenance among others.

C/Insp. Anquandah said due to Emmanuel’s job description, he worked on several accounts, including that of Ekua Ewuduwa Dadzie’s bonus and savings accounts.

However, somewhere in February 2023, Al registered for an online coding course, which the renewable annual subscription fee was US$174.30, equivalent to GH¢2,287.69.

Unfortunately, instead of A1 to pay for the course out of his own pocket, he rather made the payment on Rev Cynthia Patricia Asamoah’s Visa Card on February 6, 2023.

As a result, the complainant and the fraud team of the bank were gathering evidence on the matter to engage Al, but the latter made a swift move to tender in his resignation letter, effective May 31, 2023.

The sudden resignation and the alleged illegal transaction on the customer’s Visa Card by A1 made the bank officials more suspicious to investigate him in other areas.

The complainant, together with the fraud team, made up of the bank’s IT experts, detected that on April 20, 2023 Al by his own machination accessed one of his colleague’s User ID and password to change the contact number on another customer, Ekua Ewuduwa Dadzie’s accounts.

So, on April 21, 2023 Al personally set up an internet and mobile banking access on Ekua Ewuduwa Dadzie’s accounts, using his own User ID and password, after which he had access and started operating on the accounts without the victim customer receiving SMS alert.

Therefore, from April 21 to May 12, 2023, Al with full access to the Ekua Ewuduwa’s account, fraudulently transferred a total of GH¢945,133.00 including charges from the accounts to a number of people.

First and foremost, he transferred GH¢90,000.00 to Cecil’s girlfriend, Rhoda Abena Gransimaa Panyin Quansah’s Cal Bank and Fidelity Bank accounts; GH¢180,000.00 to Richard’s Cal Bank account; GH¢30,000.00 to Michael’s Cal Bank account and GH¢30,000.00 to Fouad’s GT Bank account.

Caleb also received GH¢30,000.00 in his Cal Bank account, Kwame and Nicholas received GH¢30,000.00 and GH¢60,000.00 respectively in their Access Bank and Fidelity Bank accounts, and Nana Kwesi got GH¢90,000.00 in his Cal Bank account.

Benjamin had GH¢60,000.00 in his Ecobank account, Daniel received GH¢30,000.00 in his Fidelity account, Boadu, GH¢30,000.00 in his GT Bank account, and Joseph, GH¢60,000.00 in his FNB account.

All of the transfers were done in tranches of GH¢30,000.00 on different dates within the said period.

On May 9, 2023, from 7:21am to 7:32am, he used another colleague and that of the branch Manageress, Felicia Mackenzie’s Users IDs to change and authorise the contact numbers of eleven customers’ accounts, including the account of late Justice Anthony Kofi Abada, former IGP, late Mr. Ernest Ako, Williams Joe Frimpong, Rev Theodora Baaba Hackman, Esther Marian Hackman and replaced them with only one contact number, 0531668674.

The prosecutor told the court that Al used eleven minutes to complete these process, after which he used his own User ID to set up online and mobile banking for these accounts on May 10, 2023.

On May 11, 2023 Al transferred GH¢50,000.00 from Esther Marian Hackman’s account to Absa account of Ernest Aryee and did the same on the next day, by transferring GH¢50,000.00 each from late Ernest Ako, Williams Joe Frimpong and Rev Theodora Baaba Hackman’s accounts to some other Absa account holders.

The receivers of the transfers were Ernest, Othniel and Isaac. The court was told that Cecil, Richard, Michael and Fouad stated in their respective investigation cautioned statements that Clinton came to their shops to purchase Iphone 14 Pro Max and requested for their bank accounts details and forwarded the same to Al to effect those fraudulent transfers into their accounts.

On May 12, 2023 Al was arrested by the Police in respect of the Visa Card theft and was granted Police enquiry bail to be reporting.

On May 15, 2023, the complainant on behalf of the bank petitioned the Director General of CID in respect of GH¢1,207,017.00 theft detected in furtherance to the Visa Card case.

Interestingly, when Al was contacted to report himself to police, he refused to show up, meanwhile, effort to compel his surety to produce him also failed.

On June 4, 2023, A1 together with his girlfriend Ivy Okertchiri, who stood as surety for him attempted to escape from the jurisdiction to Dubai, but he was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport by the Ghana Immigration Service and handed over to the police.

C/Ins Anquandah stated that investigation revealed that Al, together with his accomplices, within the period of April and May 2023, stole a total amount of GH¢1,209,304.69 from the aforementioned customers’ accounts. He said the police are still investigating the matter to trace and arrest all the remaining accused persons as well as the proceeds of crime.

Goldfields equips 124 graduates with employable skills

A total of one hundred and twenty-four youth have graduated at the second batch of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) Graduate Training programme at Tarkwa.

The 124 youth, made up of 88 males and 36 females were enrolled in 2021 at the various departments of the mining giants. The beneficiaries are from the host communities (Tarkwa and Abosso).

The training programme was structured in a way for the trainees to gain holistic view and understanding of the extractive industry, through a departmental rotation system.

Also, an integral part of the programme was the Value-Add Project, a solutions-based initiative, where the trainees identified a challenge or potential challenge in mine operations and proffer solutions.

Some of the graduates lined up.

The project challenged them to also identify opportunities and propose innovative ideas to enhance business operations.

Joshua Mortoti, Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields, West Africa, at the graduation ceremony at Tarkwa in the Western Region indicated that since the programme started in 2018, the Foundation has invested US$2.3M into it.

According to him, the programme has been instrumental in providing on-the-job training for 171 graduates so far.

“There were 47 graduate trainees in the first batch for the programme. Thirty one of them have secured employment in the mining and construction industries across Ghana. Five others are furthering their education in the United States and Europe,” he said.

On the current batch of 124, he said even before the completion of their programme, seven have been employed at the mines and with other business partners on site.

Another five took up opportunities to further their studies abroad after receiving scholarships, whilst still under training at Gold Fields.

Mr. Mortoti said the Foundation is confident about the competence and readiness of the trainees to transition into the wider professional world of work.

Their achievements, he indicated, would be a testament to the success of the programme. He announced that, the Foundation plans to increase the percentage of female representation for the programme during the next intake.

“This is our commitment to creating enduring value beyond mining”, he said.

The Executive Secretary also explained that the graduate trainee programme was designed to build a talent pipeline for Gold Fields and the mining industry in Ghana.

He said graduates from the various tertiary institutions in the company’s operational area, who have completed their national service, are enrolled on this programme for two years to acquire the right skills and competencies and make them employable in their chosen professions.

He testified that the programme has brought relief to most of the beneficiaries in terms of employment opportunities and being self-employed.

Mawuli Ababio, a Trustee of Gold Fields Ghana Foundation said “the development of human capital is an agenda we are pushing forward through the foundation, especially on women.

Take advantage of what you have studied and excel out there. We will continue to support development of host communities”, he said.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Prof. Richard Amankwah encouraged the graduates to become game changers in their communities.

“Be aggressive in looking for the kind of work you would like to do; create jobs for yourselves and do not limit yourself in anything,” he advised.

Dr. Nana Adarkwah Bediako III, Gyaasehene of Apinto Divisional Council, applauded Gold Fields for their continued support in the catchment area.

“This will go a long way to reduce un-employed graduates we have in the country,” he said.

Another badge of Heavy Duty Equipment Trainees also joined the graduates to graduate at the same programme. The Heavy Duty Equipment Training Programme was also introduced in 2021 and is aimed at equipping selected community youths with the expertise to operate heavy-duty machinery.

After six months of rigorous training and practical application, the trainees are certified by the Minerals Commission with Operators Certificate of Competency.

This certification is a testament to their competence and authorises them to operate heavy duty machinery in any company.
