BUA Foods to maintain rice prices across Nigeria

0

In a remarkable display of commitment to the Nigerian agricultural sector and the economy, BUA Foods has informed distributors of its rice products that it would maintain prices of its BUA Rice to support efforts at making rice more affordable in Nigeria. According to a statement by the company, this is due to the strong sales potential from the company’s newly upgraded 200,000tonnes per annum rice mill in Kano using locally sourced rice paddy.

According to the company, this decision to maintain prices is as a result of the little reliance on FX for rice production. Prior to the BUA Foods business integration which saw its listing in 2022, the BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, had stated that BUA’s goal would be to focus on areas where raw materials can be sourced locally across all its business areas including rice in order to promote food security in Nigeria and support the government in national development.

According to a key distributor in Kano, he said distributors were excited by this development and were sure that BUA Foods in its usual fashion would crash the rice prices further as it had consistently done with its other food products like flour, sugar, and pasta.

By prioritizing local agricultural resources, BUA Foods is not only supporting Nigerian farmers but also contributing to the nation’s self-sufficiency in rice and sugar production through backward integration.

BUA Foods steadfast commitment to its vision has gained recognition and appreciation from stakeholders across the industry. The company’s efforts to bolster the Nigerian agricultural sector have garnered praise, positioning BUA Foods as a leader in the drive towards sustainable food production.

The upgraded rice mill and parboiling plant will further enhance BUA Foods’ rice production capacity, enabling the company to meet the growing demand for its high-quality rice products whilst remaining committed to delivering excellence and ensuring that consumers have access to top-notch rice that is locally produced.

As BUA Foods continues to make significant strides in advancing the Nigerian rice industry, the company remains focused on building strong relationships with farmers, empowering local communities, and contributing to the overall development of the nation’s agricultural landscape.

Oloyede advised Tinubu to conduct his own research and get accurate information and data to assess the level of suffering in the country and make necessary adjustments.

The professor of Arabic and Islamic studies made these disclosures shortly after he led the Muslim congregation in the institution to observe the two Rakah obligatory Eld-Kabir prayers on Wednesday.

The Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Abdulrahman Oloyede has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to rely on the data released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) to measure the level of poverty in the country.

Oloyede said, “The President should access people’s welfare according to their purchasing power and not from what the Federal Bureau of Statistics give, he should have his own eye to assess people’s ability to eat.

“When people are not able to feed, then the government is failing, if they are able to feed then the government is winning.

“He should not rely on FBS to give him information, he should have his own information, and he should not rely on what they give him because of the bureaucracy. He should have his own information outside the bureaucracy.

“He should have his information to feel the pulse of the people. He should have the information to know if the peoples are able to eat, are they able to pay their children’s school fees and not rely on the official protocol. That is my message to the President.

IPOB dismisses rumour of week-long sit-at-home in South East

0
Biafra

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed an audio message circulating on social media asking residents of the southeast to observe a one-week sit-at-home from July 3 to 10.

The sit-at-home order, purported to have come from IPOB, with the tag #FreeNnamdiKanu, is aimed at forcing the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

The audio message claimed that there will be dire consequences for anyone who ventures out on the said dates.

But the media and publicity secretary of IPOB, Mr Emma Powerful, told DAILY POST upon enquiry on Wednesday, that the audio message was not from his group.

“You must know whom madness sit-at-home is, and the criminal who is illegally destroying our land.

“I will issue an official press release against it in two to three days to the date declared in the audio, but for now, the leadership (of IPOB) has asked me not to give it attention or attraction,” he said.

IPOB had first declared every Monday a sit-at-home day in the South East, as a way to compel the Federal Government to release its leader Kanu, but later canceled it, upon plea that the exercise was taking a toll on the economy of the region.

However, since its cancelation, some hoodlums have continued to enforce it, making many to compulsorily sit at home every Monday, despite IPOB’s assurances.

A factional leader of the group, Simon Ekpa, who is based in Finland, has continually supported the Monday exercise, and even threatened governors of Anambra and Enugu, Prof Chukwuma Soludo and Mr Peter Mbah respectively, who had spoken and cancelled the exercise in their states.

VGMA Commemorates World Music Day with 3 rd National Music Summit

In commemoration of the 2023 World Music Day, Charterhouse Productions Limited, organizers of the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, presented the 3rd Annual National Music Summit.

The event which was well attended by some of the music industry’s biggest names, had 3 distinct phases of value.

The first part of the event was an Unsung Music Business Workshop, aimed at providing upcoming artistes and music industry professionals with the essentials of the music business.

The speakers for this session were Kofi Boachie-Ansah – Record producer and creative entrepreneur; George Britton – Artiste Manager/ CEO GB Records; and Ike Otoo Arhin – Co-founder of Crux Global / Artiste Manager.

This workshop served as a great opportunity for individuals who are looking to make a career in the music industry or enhance their existing knowledge. The audience gained valuable insights into various aspects of the music business, as speakers touched on marketing, promotion, contracts, copyright, branding and more.

Overall, this session was an invaluable opportunity for individuals looking to make their mark in the music industry and take their careers to new heights. The second segment was a dialogue of national interest – How the Ecosystem Can Raise More A-list Artistes, With Global Appeal.

Panellists of this session were Rocky Dawuni – a 3-time Grammy Awards Nominee; Okyeame Kwame – Award Winning Artiste / EnEntrepreneur and Joe Mettle – Award Winning Gospel Artiste.

One of the main challenges faced by Ghanaian artists is the lack of exposure in the international market. Given the global interest in African music, there is a need for music professionals to discuss how to grow A-list aritstes with global appeal. The speakers reiterated a vital point; ‘By focusing on international market penetration, cross-border collaborations, and artist development, the

music ecosystem can create a conducive environment for Ghanaian artists to succeed on a global scale’.

Yvonne Nelson

Yvonne Nelson has swiftly reacted to the new diss song aimed at her by her former lover Sarkodie over some claims she made about him in her popular autobiography, I am not Yvonne Nelson.

In a new song called Try Me, the legendary rapper presented his version of the events, claiming that even though he wasn’t ready at the time, he wanted her to keep the child but Yvonne refused on the grounds that she was in school.

Sarkodie talked about how he was in love with Yvonne Nelson for real, but it later turned out that he was probably only one of many guys who Yvonne had lined up like Cuban links.

He claimed that he had intended to keep that element of his life a secret until after his death, but he now feels compelled to do it because Yvonne Nelson disseminated a lie that serves her interests.

“I’m not going to lie, we had a thing. First, I thought we had a think until I had the hint that there were many guys. I tried to stay away but then you came that you were pregnant. But then I wasn’t ready but I told you to keep it.

“You told be you were schooling so you needed to complete it but till today, I don’t believe it. I told you to let my doctor take care of you and you sent a text later that your friend has recommended a one of the best doctors…

“So don’t you make it seem like I was the one pushing you for abortion. Baby girl make you no try me”, he raps on Ty Me.

The song, as expected, became viral online. The actress was drawn to this, and she quickly refuted several of his assertions.

“Insults won’t work Michael, Respect womanhood. I’m happy the world gets to see how you are playing this and the real you. Young women get to learn from this. You would get the applause for a rap. still doesn’t change the truth,” she posted.

‘They really got me,’ 80-year-old woman attacked by turkeys in Cambridge

0
Jeannette Atkinson

A pair of pesky turkeys bit an 80-year-old woman in Cambridge. She fled through a break in traffic to escape them.

“All that was going through my head was do I try to cross the street? Can I avoid the traffic?” questioned Jeannette Atkinson. “I didn’t think I could run faster than the turkeys, or I was afraid I would trip on the sidewalk.”

Atkinson was walking down Sparks Street when she spotted the gobbling duo. The two turkeys came from behind a car and stood on either side of her. They trailed her until she swung her purse at them. This happened six to seven times before one of the turkeys pecked her thigh.

“I looked down, and when I saw blood coming through my slacks, I said whoops they really got me,” said Atkinson. “I did call the doctor later that day, and the office said go get a tetanus shot, which I got.”

Fearing further attacks, Atkinson bolted across a busy street during a lull in traffic. As cars came through, they separated her from the turkeys. She posted her experience on social media. It led to a few suggestions from neighbors.

“The suggestion I liked the best was to take an umbrella, and don’t use it to poke them or anything, but to open the umbrella. The turkeys will think you’re a dominant male,” laughed Atkinson, adding that her grandchildren told her she went viral. She experienced her first, large social media encounter, “They were right! As the responses came in, I wanted people to be sympathetic and to like me.”

Climate Change Committee says UK no longer a world leader

0
The government proposed the first new coal mine in 30 years in Whitehaven, Cumbria

Government backing for new oil and coal, airport expansion plans and slow progress on heat pumps show that the UK has lost its leadership on climate issues, a government watchdog warns.

The Climate Change Committee (CCC) described government efforts to scale up climate action as “worryingly slow”.

It was “markedly” less confident than a year ago that the UK would reach its targets for cutting carbon emissions.

Committee chairman Lord Deben, a former Conservative environment minister, was particularly critical of the government’s policy on new coal and oil projects.

The decision to approve the UK’s first new deep coal mine in 30 years in Cumbria last December was “total nonsense”, he told the BBC.

Lord Deben was also damning about plans for a major new oilfield off the coast of Scotland. Approval for Rosebank, which could produce an estimated 300 million barrels of oil in its lifetime, is expected soon.

“How can we ask countries in Africa not to develop oil?” Lord Deben said. “How can we ask other nations not to expand the fossil fuel production if we start doing it ourselves?”

The UK has set legally binding targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, meaning the country will no longer contribute any additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

At the COP26 UN climate conference in Glasgow in 2021 then Prime Minister Boris Johnson vowed to cut emissions by 68% on 1990 levels by the end of the decade.

The CCC report warned “continued delays in policy development and implementation” meant reaching them was “increasingly challenging”.

The Committee highlighted a “lack of urgency” across government and a “worrying hesitancy” by ministers to lead on the climate issue.

Ukraine war: Countdown has begun to end of Putin, say Kyiv officials

0
The focus in Kyiv in recent days has been the impact of the Wagner mercenary group's rebillion war

Attention in the Ukrainian capital has been fixed squarely on the mutiny of the Wagner Group, its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, and its consequences for Vladimir Putin and the conduct of the war in Ukraine.

The drama over the border in Russia has hardened the view in Kyiv that Mr Putin’s time as Russia’s president is coming to an end.

“I think the countdown has started,” said Andriy Yermak, President Zelensky’s closest adviser.

At a briefing in Kyiv, he looked back to the year that Russia first invaded Ukraine, annexing the Crimean Peninsula.

“What Ukraine has seen since 2014 has become evident for the entire world,” said Mr Yermak.

“This [Russia] is a terrorist country whose leader is an inadequate person who has lost connection with reality. The world must conclude that it’s impossible to have any kind of serious relationship with that country.”

Senior Ukrainian officials who spoke to the BBC here in Kyiv all argued that President Putin could not ride out a catastrophic loss of authority.

It started, they said, with his disastrous decision to mount a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February last year. The Wagner mutiny, and Mr Prigozhin’s denunciation of the Kremlin’s justifications for the war have, they said, removed what remained of Mr Putin’s chances of hanging on.

“The Putin regime” one of them insisted, “cannot be saved.”
