Bellingham gets brace as Real come from behind to beat Almeria

Bellingham (r) scores again

England midfielder Jude Bellingham scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to maintain their 100% start in La Liga with a victory at Almeria.

Vinicius Jr chipped in with Real’s third of the night after Bellingham had levelled and put the visitors in front.

Sergio Arribas’ early header had given Almeria the lead.

After finding the net on his league debut at Athletic Bilbao, Bellingham again played a key role in driving Ancelotti’s side forward and ensuring they were comfortable winners in Andalusia.

Wearing the number five shirt once filled by Real icon Zinedine Zidane, Bellingham was in the right place at the right time to level the scores, picking up a fortuitous ricochet off home defender Chumi that dropped into his path to fire into the right corner.

He doubled his and Real’s tally on the hour mark, heading in from Toni Kroos’ pinpoint cross from the left.

Bellingham’s pass and movement gave Brazil forward Vinicius the opportunity to deftly round off the scoring and seal Real’s win.

Tottenham secure deserved victory over Man United

Maddison and Casemiro slug it out in midfield

Tottenham secured their first win under the management of Ange Postecoglou with a thrilling and deserved victory over Manchester United.

Spurs and United created chances throughout a sometimes chaotic encounter before the deadlock was broken by Pape Matar Sarr’s goal, drilled high into the net from close range four minutes after the interval.

In a game of numerous chances, Spurs sealed the victory in front of the ecstatic home support after 83 minutes when Ivan Perisic’s cross took a touch off Ben Davies before going in via Lisandro Martinez.

The home side hit the woodwork twice in the first half through Pedro Porro and Luke Shaw’s deflection, while Antony hit the upright for United, new Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario saved superbly from Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes somehow headed wide of an open goal in the first half.

Both sides also had penalty appeals turned down when Cristian Romero handled and then when the Spurs defender appeared to be bundled to the ground by Martinez at the other end, but ultimately it was Spurs’ greater attacking intent that made the difference.

Alvarez gives Man City win against Newcastle

Alvarez and Foden celebrate

Defending champions Manchester City reminded their title rivals they remain the team to beat by seeing off a determined Newcastle United side that have been touted as possible pretenders to their crown.

Julian Alvarez’s brilliant first-half strike proved enough to maintain City’s winning start to the Premier League season against a Magpies team who battled hard but possessed modest attacking threat for much of the match.

Phil Foden provided the creative sparkle for City in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, who faces up to six months out after hamstring surgery this week.

The England playmaker set up Alvarez’s goal and created more chances for Erling Haaland either side of the break, with the Norway striker firing wide twice before being denied by Nick Pope.

Newcastle matched City in midfield and upset the home crowd with their physical approach, with Foden and Rodri both on the receiving end of a couple of heavy challenges.

Newcastle did not manage a shot on target until the 70th minute, when substitute Harvey Barnes finally tested Ederson from outside the box, and despite some late pressure they did not create another clear chance.

The ECOWAS CDS addressing the media

The D-day for the activation of Economic Community for West Africa States (ECOWAS) Standby force to Niger has been decided.

The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah announced this to the media in Accra on Friday, but did not give the specific date.

He said the standby forces are ready to go anytime the order is given by the Head of the Authority.

He told the media after a 2-day
a two-day extraordinary meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff on the deployment of the standby force to Niger that the D-day will not be disclosed.

According to him, CDS from the 10 of 15 countries present at the meeting agreed on the strategic capacity and objectives, and the equipment needed for the deployment.

He said the commitment of the member states was very encouraging, reiterating: “All member states of ECOWAS present here today have all committed elements.

They member states have committed their own equipment and they have committed their own resources to undertake this mission.”

Ambassador Musah explained that the mission was to restore constitutional order but not declaration of war on Niger, and refocus the objective of military, to protect territorial integrity and security.

He added that since the coup last month, there has been an uptick in terrorists’ attack in the landlocked country, giving rise to insecurity even among ethnic groups.

The commissioner stated while all options are available on the table including dialogue, they are not going to engage in endless dialogue.

“We are not going to engage in endless dialogue, it must be fruitful and it’s aims and objectives must be restoration of constitutional order in the shortest possible time,” he stated.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Enforcement Taskforce will revisit defaulting taxpayers from 2022 to ensure voluntary compliance.

The Head of the Accra Central Enforcement Unit of the GRA, Assistant Commissioner Joseph Annan, announced this after arresting four errant taxpayers.

Mr. Annan warned that it would be in the best interest of those defaulting taxpayers to comply with the law else legal action would be instituted against them.

“This is to send a signal to the public that it is not a nine-day wonder thing we are doing. We are on the field, and we will continue to be on the field, and those we have not visited… we shall surely come to you, and when we come, we expect you to do the right thing.”

The taskforce arrested Eva’s Wholesale Price, Modern Floors, American Goods, and Qingsong Trading Company Limited at Kasoa Old Barrier, Bortianor, West Hills Mall, and Weija.

They were found not to have registered for tax and indulging in selective issuance of tax invoice.

They were handed over to the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for investigation.

A pre-empt assessment would also be conducted on their businesses and they would be referred to the Audit Unit of the GRA.

The defaulting taxpayers will be expected to declare and pay whatever amount they owed the government.

“We are going to the system and fish out all those who are declaring and not paying, and even those not declaring. And then the appropriate actions would be taken,” Mr. Annan warned.

Security Worsens In Niger

Niger jihadist

The Sub-Saharan region is witnessing a worrying and increasing rate of attacks by insurgents, heightening the tension in the Sahel area.

Since 2020, the Sahel region has been hit with three military takeovers, with the last happening in Niger, in late July 2023.

Reports indicate that these military takeovers have been fueled by anger at the bloodshed caused by Jihadist activities in the Sahel region.

On Tuesday, terrorists who had laid ambush near the Niger border with Mali attacked Nigerien soldiers, killing dozens and leaving others suffering various degrees of injuries.

The attack, the deadliest since the July 26 coup, has raised concerns about escalating Jihadist activities in the region, further denting the image of the continent.

A statement by the country’s Ministry of Defense, released late Tuesday, confirmed the attack and said that 17 Nigerien soldiers had been killed and 20 injured.

The soldiers were a detachment of the Nigerien Armed Forces (FAN) moving between Boni and Torodi.

They were victims of a terrorist ambush near the town of Koutougou, 52 kilometers southwest of Tordi. An unconfirmed report by the Nigerien junta claimed that at least 100 attackers were killed in retaliation.

ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the attack on the Nigerien security forces and supporters of the junta. The bloc is preparing to deploy troops to Niger to forcefully restore the nation to constitutional rule.

On Thursday, August 17 and Friday, August 18, 2023 defense ministers of the member states held meetings in Accra to discuss the plan of deployment.

Information available from the meetings indicated that all member states, except those with military rule and Cape Verde, have agreed to send troops.

The bloc says it is ready to deploy the standby troops, should all diplomatic efforts fail.

This will not be the first time such a warning has been issued. It is not clear whether the junta will again disobey the call for diplomatic engagements, as it did initially, which influenced the decision to activate standby forces.

AU

In the midst of the storm, the continent has hit a snag in uniting to fight for a common goal. The ECOWAS has failed to have the backing of the African Union (AU) on the decision to deploy troops to restore constitutional order in Niger.

On Monday, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council met in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to deliberate on the Niger crisis.

According to information available, many southern and northern African member countries rejected the ECOWAS proposal to stage a military intervention unless the Nigerien military junta cedes power and reinstates President Bazoum.

THREAT

However, Tuesday’s attack on the soldiers is said to have been motivated by the threat of military intervention by ECOWAS, coupled with the internal extremist threat.

On the back of the deteriorating state of security in Niger, there has been the emergence of a new militia, called the Volunteers for the Defense of Niger.

Reports suggest that the militia is recruiting volunteers to support the nation’s armed forces.

BORDER

Niger’s western border area, which meets with central Mali and northern Burkina Faso has in the last decade become the epicentre of violence, caused by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) in the Sahel region.

ECOWAS is deploying troops and all its elements -Nitiwul

0
Ghana's Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul in a pose with Defence leaders from West Africa’s Ecowas bloc

Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has rehashed the call for partner countries, the Africa Union, and institutions to support the Economic Community for West Africa States (ECOWAS) for the deployment of the standby force to Niger.

The appeal for support was to enable the quick restoration of constitution order, peace and security in the member state.

He has, therefore, rallied the various Chiefs of Defence Staff (CDS) in the sub-region to get ready to counter the Niger military junta.

The Minister was speaking at the opening of a two-day extraordinary meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff on the deployment of the standby force to Niger in Accra, yesterday, Thursday, 17th August, 2023.

“Your presence here alone gives a powerful message to the world – that you are united in carrying out the directives of the Heads of States and Governments of ECOWAS, and after today and tomorrow meetings you will put in place a plan to activate the standby force that will restore democracy in Niger.”

He warned that if Presidential Guards can take hostage of their President, then nobody in West Africa was safe, “that is why I urged you to continue to be loyal to your Heads of States. I urge you to continue to be loyal to ECOWAS and to its directives,” he urged.

Speaking passionately to the army heads, the Minister mourned over how the sub-region had suddenly been deviled by coup d’états and military takeovers, while other regions on the Continent did not have same.

He said the incident had compounded the activities of Terrorist Armed Group (TAG) and Violent Extremist Organisations (VEO) in the region.

He continued that, the populations of countries affected by the activities of TAG/VEO were already paying heavy prices, loss of human lives, and deterioration of critical infrastructure, school dropout, and lingering humanitarian crises.

Mr. Nitiwul added that those states were gradually losing control of their territory, leaving large parts of it to TAG/VEO, which now control and carry out various criminal activities and illicit cross-border trafficking.

He added that the relapse of the 1960s to 90s era of coup d’états and military takeover was the worst moments for the region.

He stated that ECOWAS resorted to all diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, but the military junta remained defiant after the expiration on the one week ultimatum, thereby, force was being applied.

We are not going begging with cup in hand

The ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, assured the Military Junta that the Committee would explore all options available to it to ensure that constitutional order was restored in Niger.

He stressed that although the diplomatic window was still opened, the standby forces would be deployed together with all its elements.

Responding to naysayers, he said ECOWAS would fall on its own resources to enter Niger, and will not go begging for support.

“We are going in Niger with our own contingent and equipment, our own resources and to make sure that we restore constitutional order. If democracy lovers want to support us, they are welcome but we are not going begging with cup in hand,” he called the bluff of the naysayers.

According to him, despite serious interests at stake in the case of Niger, ECOWAS was determined to act on its mandate.

He admonished ECOWAS citizens to remain resolute, and that coup d’états and military takeover were not solution to economic challenges.

“There are people in the region who are saying we should not intervene, because of insecurity and because of bad governance and poor governance. I wish to inform the community in West Africa that the entire world is suffering from the aftermaths of COVID-19. What is happening in Ukraine is having a very devastating impact on livelihood throughout the world…”

He added that if nations were to resort to violence means to solve economic challenges the whole world would be in flames by unconstitutional changes of governments.

Ambassador Musah wondered why the naysayers never questioned ECOWAS on the deployment of the standby force to the Gambia to make sure that the President who had lost elections vacated the Presidency.

He added that the more the junta stayed, the more it found reasons to justify why they stages the coup, hence, had remained defiant.

Ambassador Musah charged the defence chiefs to immediately activate the standby force and all its elements.

Chief of Defence Staffs responses

The President of the Committee of Chief of Defence Staffs and CDS of Nigeria, General Christopher Musa, called for unity to face the current challenges in the sub-region.

“As we embark on this important mission, let us remember the words of the ECOWAS Vision 2080, which calls for a region of peace, security, and solidarity. Let these words not just be an aspiration, but a guiding principle in our deliberations and decisions,” he said.

He was certain that their ultimate goal in the activation of the standby forces was not to resolve the crisis in Niger, but to build a stronger, more resilient ECOWAS that was capable of confronting and overcoming the challenges.

This is the second time the committee is meeting following the extraordinary meeting of ECOWAS Heads of States and Governments.

ECOWAS maintained that it still recognised ousted Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate President of the Republic of Niger.

However, the junta has charged Mohamed Bazoum of high treason for sending messages to Washington Post.

The ousted President, together with his family and cabinet, has been taken hostage by the military junta.

Niger is the fourth country after Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea Bissau in the sub-region to have overthrown a constitutional government.

All these countries are joining forces to fight ECOWAS, should in case it invades Niger.

Many have also expressed fear that the crisis may escalate like the Syrian conflict, due to the Niger junta seeking support from Russia.

Currently, there is a growing sense of insecurity in the landlocked country, as 17 soldiers were killed in an ambush by insurgents.

Days of coup d’états are over – Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament

0
H. E. Hon. Sidie Mohammed Tunis - Speaker, ECOWAS Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mr. Sidie Muhammed Tunis, has condemned the military junta in Niger, and called on it to restore the deposed President, Bazoun, into office and go back to the barracks.

He condemned military rule, saying it was not good for us (West Africa).

According to him, those who were hailing the military junta would, in no time, turn round to condemn it, an indication that the days of coup d’états were over, and that we should not go back to the dark ages.

He indicated that the ECOWAS Parliament supports Heads of State and ECOWAS Commission to use force to intervene in the Nigerien crisis in the event of failure to use diplomacy and dialogue.

“We support the position of the ECOWAS Commission to stop coup d’états in West Africa,” he told William De Bordes in an interview on Silver FM, a radio station in Kumasi.

The Speaker emphasised that he preferred dialogue, but if it failed, ECOWAS would opt for force to stop coup d’états though it was very expensive and risky, hence the need to resort to peace talks and dialogue.

He said ECOWAS would adopt all avenues to ensure peace, and cautioned the Nigerien military not to take the slow approach of the ECOWAS for granted.

Hon. Tunis noted that good governance was key to democracy, and urged African leaders to always uphold human rights and the rule of law and good governance for democracy to thrive.

I’ve ambitious plans for Ghana -Afriyie Akoto

0
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has said that he is the only candidate among the ten vying for the position who has big plans for Ghana to make life comfortable for all.

According to him, his vision of using agriculture as the bedrock to develop other sectors of the economy, as well as his ambitious project of establishing businesses for the NPP, were so practical that when given the nod to implement them, Ghanaians would feel the change that they had been craving for so many years.

He said having toured the length and breadth of the country, and experienced the low morale of the people as a result of the economic difficulties they were going through, he was more energised at this moment in his life to break the general principles of business and management, and make life meaningful for all.

Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle at his campaign office in Accra on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Dr. Akoto said his vision of establishing businesses for the NPP was not a new innovation, as the project was being implemented in other jurisdictions around the world and generating a lot of money and creating jobs for the teeming unemployed party activists.

“The morale of the people is down. The revival of their morale is based on what I intend to do. I have big plans for Ghana – plans that can generate income for the development of our great NPP to pay our activists handsomely to encourage them to work hard for this party; and plans to use agriculture to develop the other sectors of the economy. These are ambitious plans that I have prioritised to implement when given the nod to lead the NPP and Ghana,” he noted.

Explaining what he intended to do for the UP tradition when elected as its flagbearer, Dr. Akoto, who is a former two-term Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso, said his vision for the party was to setup a chain of party-owned businesses at the national, regional, and constituency levels that would be managed by a holding company.

These businesses, he noted, would generate revenue to run the party, as well as provide gainful employment opportunities for its members to alleviate their plights. This ambitious plan, he added, is the best sustainable means of effectively managing the party at all levels as was being implemented in Taiwan by the Kuomintang (KTM) or Nationalist Party of Taiwan, ANC in South Africa, RPF in Rwanda, the French Communist Party, Social Democrats in Germany and Austria, Scandinavian socialist and communist parties among many others.

KMT of Taiwan

For instance, the Kuomintang (KMT) or Nationalist Party of Taiwan amassed a vast business empire of banks, investment companies, petrochemical firms, and television and radio stations. The party which is currently struggling financially was thought to have been the world’s richest political party at a point, with assets once estimated to be around US$2 to US$10billion.

ANC in South Africa

Chancellor House Holdings is a private company committed to generating wealth through prudent and viable investment opportunities for shareholders including mining and other assets of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) Party.

However, it does not invest in companies that tender for any work or conduct procurement directly or indirectly with any RSA’s National, Provincial and Local Government spheres, Government Agencies and State-Owned Entities.

RPF in Rwanda

Crystal Ventures, the Rwanda Patriotic Front’s (RPF) holding company, has investments in everything from furniture to finance. It owns the country’s biggest milk processor, its finest coffee shops, and some of its priciest real estate.

Its contractors are building Kigali’s roads. There are several firms offering security services in Rwanda but the guards from ISCO, part of Crystal Ventures, are the only ones who carry guns. The company is reckoned to have some US$500million of assets.

“My vision for the party is really simple in the sense that it is something that is happening elsewhere. It is not my own imagination. We are talking about the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa which owns mining companies, insurance companies and owns shares in big companies in South Africa and beyond so they can afford to pay average wages and salaries to their functionaries and activists on the ground and create jobs and others.

That is the vision that I want to bring to the New Patriotic Party and that will really put us in a level which will enable us not to only break the eight but the 16, the 32 and whatever to help the people of this country to develop and enjoy a good standard of living like any other descent society,” he posited.

Commenting on his vision for the country, Dr. Akoto said “this country is sitting on wealth. It hasn’t been exploited. My vision is to use agriculture to spearhead the breaking of poverty cycle in this country.

We’ve been financing our development with debts; pensioners’ funds and borrowing money from the International Monetary Fund. Since the beginning of our republic, we have had to rely on them for our development. It won’t work; it has never worked, and it will never work.

We have to get away from the cycle of borrowing money to fix our roads and finance our infrastructure. Agriculture has the tools to be able to do that. The farmers of Ghana have demonstrated to me clearly in my six years at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and given the necessary support, they will deliver.

So, to me the priority is that we will support farmers in whatever that they are doing and create the institutions to assist them”.

It was based on this vision that he led the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to establish the Tree Development Authority (TDA) to develop six tree crops – rubber, oil palm, coconut, mango, cashew and Shea under one roof to be developed to the level of cocoa where production could generate between US$6billion to US$12billion for the country annually.

“This is the vision that I have. Compare this vision with the others and you will see that this is a very doable and very easily digested concept that can turn around the country. So, I am appealing to the delegates that your best bet is Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto. So, when it comes to August 26 and November 4, remember me in,” he noted.
