Soldier dies from his gun

The Department of Public Relations, General Headquarters, of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Burma Camp, Accra, has confirmed the death of a soldier as a result of a suspected accidental discharge at the Base Ammunition Depot (BAD), Michel Camp, on Saturday morning.

The deceased, Private (Pte) Bayou Roger, from the 5 Infantry Battalion, was part of a platoon from the Southern Command performing duties at BAD, near Michel Camp in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.

As contained in a press release, Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie, who is the Director General, Public Relations, GAF, said the incident occurred at about 0750 hours on Saturday, 19th August 2023 at BAD.

He said a preliminary investigative report indicates that Private (Pte) Bayou Roger
was seen sitting on his bed, waiting to relieve his colleague at a duty post at 0800 hours when his rifle went off, hitting him under his chin and killing
him instantly.

“The body of the deceased soldier has since been conveyed to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary. A team from the Homicide Unit of Ghana Police, Gbetsile Police Station, is collaborating
with the Military Police to investigate the fatal incident,” Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie’s statement explained.
