Govt fails to arraign Emefiele, co-defendant on alleged N6.9 billion fraud charges

Godwin Emefiele, suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria

The federal government, on Wednesday, failed to arraign Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and his co-defendant, Sa’adatu Ramallan-Yaro.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, in Abuja, had, last week Tuesday (17 August), rescheduled the arraignment of the defendants for Wednesday. Ms Ramallan-Yaro’s absence from court was cited for the postponement of the arraignment.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, had informed the trial judge, Hamzat Muazu, that Ms Ramallan-Yaro could not be brought to court due to ill health.

However, on Wednesday, the State Security Service (SSS) failed to bring Mr Emefiele and Ms Ramallan-Yaro to court. Both of the defendants have been in SSS custody.

Neither the prosecution nor the defence teams were in court. Mr Emefiele’s lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and Ms Ramallan-Yaro’s counsel, Abdulhakeem Labi-lawal, were absent.

PREMIUM TIMES checks revealed that the case was not listed on Wednesday’s cause list, and the DPP, Mr Abubakar was also not in court.

There was no official available to explain what seemed to be an indefinite postponement agreed between the parties to the case and the court.

Keeper’s House Chapel members donate blood to blood bank

0

The Keeper’s House Chapel International has organized a blood donation exercise to augment the supplies for the Greater Accra Regional blood bank.

The exercise, which formed part of the church’s eighth-anniversary celebration, was held at its premises at Madina in Accra.

Sixty-four members voluntarily donated 64 units of blood to the blood bank.
In his remarks, Reverend Ebenezer Hamilton, Chairman of the anniversary committee said the blood donation was part of the church’s social responsibility to save lives.

He said news abound that there was a shortage of blood at the blood bank while a lot of people needed blood to aid their recovery.
Reverend Hamilton, therefore, urged members of the church to come out in their numbers to donate blood to save lives.

Reverend Hamilton noted that this was not the first time that the Keeper’s House Chapel International was donating blood to the Blood Bank.

He urged the public to also follow suit by taking the initiative to donate blood to the Bank to save lives.
Reverend Hamilton asked the people not to be scared about donating blood, and stressed that it was rather good for their health.

“Blood donation is not harmful. The more you donate, the better for you”, he stressed.
Briefing the media on the exercise, a medical officer with the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Addipa-Adapoe, noted that blood is an important drug that could not be manufactured but could only be donated.

He said although voluntary donation was the purest and best form of donation compared to replacement and commercial donations, it constituted less than 30 percent of the collection pool in the country.

Dr. Addipa-Adapoe, who is a member of the Covid-19 Management and Rapid Response Team, said every unit of blood could save four lives.
He mentioned people who are bleeding, such as women during delivery, accident victims, and also people with anaemia as some of the patients whose lives could be saved with blood.
Dr Addipa-Adapoe, therefore, lauded members of the Keeper’s House Chapel International for the show of enthusiasm by defying the heavy downpour to voluntarily donate blood to save lives.
He urged the public to follow suit by taking the initiative to donate blood to the Bank to save lives.

In a related development, the Takoradi branch of the Keeper’s House Chapel International has marked its third anniversary with a donation of assorted items and cash to the Egyam Children’s Home in Takoradi.
The items included bags of rice, gallons of oil, drinks, detergents, and clothes.
Held on August 16, 2023, the anniversary was on the theme: “Celebrating God’s Goodness and Faithfulness in Ministry”.

The Resident Pastor, Patrick Danso-Fynn, and other members of the church danced with the children and held a ministry with them.
In his remarks, Pastor Danso-Fynn noted that it was the third consecutive year that the church had made similar donations to the Egyam Children’s Home.

He said the Takoradi branch of Keeper’s House Chapel International had donated the items on behalf of the Founder and General Overseer, Reverend Francis Aubyn.

Pastor Danso-Fynn urged the children to be serious with their studies to excel in their exams and move on to higher institutions to attain professional qualifications.
He charged them to take inspiration from some of the inmates of the home who had moved on to secondary and tertiary institutions.

In her remarks, the matron of the Egyam Children’s Home, Ms. Mary Gladys Boakye, expressed gratitude to the church for the gesture. She said the items would be very beneficial to the children in terms of feeding and other needs.

All is not lost, have faith in gov’t -Nana Yaw Preko

The Deputy Communications Director at the Office of the President Nana Yaw Preko (in a wine dress) addressing the media

A Deputy Communications Director at the Office of the President, Nana Yaw Preko, has called on Ghanaians to continue to have faith in the government.

According to the Deputy Communications Director, even though leadership appreciates the current economic situation, all is not lost and that government is more capable of turning things around.

He made the appeal when he engaged the media in Koforidua last week Friday, to inform them about some of the strategic interventions the government has initiated to change the economic situation.

To Nana Preko, the government has adopted major economic measures to control and achieve sustainable growth of Ghana’s economy. He mentioned one of the measures as the decision to cut down on expenditure to ensure fiscal stability.

According to him, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and Ukraine-Russia crisis, the government has managed to implement the domestic’s debt restructuring policy as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal.

Nana Yaw Preko explained that the restructuring was intended to build a more resilient economy that at least can accommodate the external shocks.

He contended that President Akufo-Addo and his government are better managers of the national economy and that it is important for Ghanaians to continuously manage the economy by voting for the New Patriotic Party.

He asserted that the government remains committed to implementing effective policies and reforms despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and global economic crises.

“Because we have the men, the GDP was fairly stabilised at 6.5% in 2019 whilst inflation dropped to a record low of 7.1%, ” he added.

He specified that Ghana’s growth rate plummeted to a record low of 0.4% in 2020 following the impact of Covid-19 pandemic and global economic disruption, but the government’s expedient recovery strategies paid off, leading to a swift recovery in 2021, with a growth rate of 5.4%.

“The African Development Bank (ADB) has projected a steady growth rate of 5.4% to 5.6% by 2023, contingent upon the absence of any major global economic disruptions,’’ said Mr. Yaw Preko.

He said that the economic recovery is a dynamic progression that positioned Ghana as the fastest-growing economy in the sub Saharan African sub region during the pre-Covid era (2017-2019).

Ghana’s stable democracy is conducive for investment in mining sector –Duker

George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker has outlined the effective legal and regulatory framework as well as the country’s thriving peace and democracy as factors that guarantee success for investment in the country’s viable artisanal small-scale mining sector.

According to the Deputy Minister, the determination of the government to sanitize the small-scale mining industry and eliminate the excesses that incur losses for industry players should be enough to stimulate the interest of investors in the sector.

Mr James Askew, the C.E.O Ansong Askew Company Limited

Addressing a five-member delegation from Ansong Askew Company Limited, a mining company based in Peru, at the Ministry on Wednesday, 23 August, 2023 Duker outlined that Ghana’s mining regulatory regime is second to none on the continent.

He disclosed that government views the small-scale mining sector as a platform to create local giants in the mining industry and that any investment that guarantees benefits for the locals without harming the environment is welcomed.

“Ghana has a well-regulated industry, as the ASM is concerned. We have a legal framework. Democratically, we all know Ghana is one of the most stable countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and choosing Ghana as the place for your entry to Africa is the right choice”, he said.

Mr James Askew, the Chief Executive Officer of Ansong Askew Company Limited outlined the processing capacity of his outfit, indicating that they are the biggest gold exporters in Peru.

He disclosed that the company has the capacity to transform the Ghanaian small-scale mining as it operates in a transparent manner and ensure traceability of the minerals they purchase.
He added that his company raised over $200m from exportations last year with 97% of the proceeds staying in the country and being used to grow the sector.

According to him, local miners stand a chance of tripling their investment if they decided to transact business with his outfit.

Mr. James Askew indicated awareness of Ghana’s ban on the use of mercury for mining, detailing that his company will not conduct their activities in a way that will have no negative ramifications on Ghana’s environment.

After learning of the company’s capacity and commitment to the protection of local interest, Mireku Duker expressed delight, indicating that it aligns with the government’s policy and plan for the sector.

He further disclosed that the promise that over 95% of generated revenue will circulate in the Ghanaian mining economy is in accordance with Act 703 which dictates that the small-scale mining sector should be the preserve of Ghanaians.

He assured the delegation that the ministry will take measures to facilitate their smooth establishment in Ghana.

French airport to be renamed after Queen Elizabeth II

0

An airport in France will be renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II after receiving permission from the King, officials in the town have said.

Le Touquet, in northern France, received the blessing from the King on Monday, its town hall said.

Touquet-Paris-Plage airport will be Elizabeth II Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport.

The town hall said the tribute to the “Great Queen” would also recognise the “most British of French resorts”.

A date for the inauguration has not been set.

It comes after the original proposal was made to the British Crown six days after the death of the Queen on 8 September last year.

Le Touquet explained it was also a nod to the late Queen’s uncle, Edward VIII, who visited the resort to enjoy horse riding and sand yachting, sometimes accompanied by his niece when she was not yet Queen.

“That King Charles III accepted the proposal of the mayor of Le Touquet further reinforces the strategy of the latter who wants to affirm Le Touquet as ‘the most British of French resorts’,” Le Touquet’s town hall added.

The airport was designed in the 1930s to welcome Britons to the coastal town about an hour’s drive from Calais. President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte also have a holiday home there.

The town hopes its airport’s new name will strengthen the link between the town and the UK, and welcome tourist planes from across the Channel.

Next month, Le Touquet will host the England rugby team when it plays in Rugby World Cup being hosted in France.

Buckingham Palace and the Cabinet Office have been contacted for comment on the renaming.

The Host of‘Aggressive Interview’ which airs on Youtube mentioned that, there are a lot of married couples who are currently living together as though they are enemies, however, they do not have the courage to walk out of the marriage because of the fear of public ridicule and how society will view them.
