World Bank affirms 3.3% economic growth forecast for Nigeria

0
World Bank

The World Bank yesterday affirmed its 3.3 per cent economic growth forecast for Nigeria in 2024 saying the nation’s economy was mildly buoyant in the early part of the year despite macroeconomic adjustments.

However, the World Bank downgraded its forecast for Nigeria’s economic growth in 2025 to 3.5 per cent, from the 3.7 per cent forecast made in January.

Similarly, the World Bank downgraded its forecast for Sub-Saharan economic growth in 2024 to 3.0 per cent from 3.8 per cent forecast made in January.

The report stated: “Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) weakened to 3.0 per cent in 2023. Growth in the region’s largest three economies—Nigeria, South Africa, Angola—remained weak. In early 2024, private sector activity picked up, buoyed by a strengthening global economy.

At the same time, many economies in the region continue to struggle with weak government balance sheets, stemming partly from low revenue collection and high debt-service costs, while some also need to manage the adverse effects of currency depreciations. In Nigeria, growth slowed to 2.9 per cent in 2023. Despite ongoing macroeconomic adjustments, the economy was mildly buoyant in early 2024.

Growth in SSA is projected to pick up from 3.0 percent in 2023 to 3.5 percent in 2024 and about 4 percent annually in 2025-26, as fading inflationary pressures allow for interest rate cuts, which will support private consumption and investment.

Growth in the region’s largest three economies is expected to accelerate from 1.8 percent in 2023 to 2.4 percent in 2024 and an average of 2.6 percent in 2025-26. Yet, this is markedly below the region’s average growth. Non-resource-rich economies are forecast to maintain growth above their historical average rate, while resource-rich economies recover from their slow growth in 2023 that mainly reflected declining metal prices.

Sharing the now trending video on X.com, Atiku wrote, “I sincerely sympathise with President Bola Tinubu, #officialABAT, over this unfortunate incident as he was set to review the parade on Democracy Day.

“I do hope that all is well with him.”

Nigerians have also taken to social media to react to the video.

While some netizens mock the President over the incident, others downplayed it because the president went on with the ceremonial rounds.

Newmont’s Operations in Ghana Recognized for Leading Decarbonization Efforts

0

For the third consecutive year, Newmont’s Ahafo South and Akyem mines have been lauded by KalTire for their outstanding achievements in the decarbonization effort.

KalTire’s Maple Programme recognized Ahafo South with a carbon credit for saving 333 tons of CO2 equivalent (332,851 kg) through tire retreading, thereby preventing the use of 8,192 liters of oil in new tire production in 2023. Similarly, Akyem Mine was acknowledged for saving 170 tons of CO2 equivalent (170,441 kg) through the retreading of 26 tires, avoiding the use of 4,137 liters of oil.

Newmont has integrated energy efficiency and climate goals into its corporate strategy, aiming for zero carbon emissions by 2050. At Ahafo South, various yearly projects are executed to meet these commitments. In 2022, Ahafo South and Akyem received carbon credit recognitions for saving 121 tons (120,518 kg) and 60 tons (59,562 kg) of CO2 equivalent, respectively. In 2021, Ahafo South saved 110 tons (109,678 kg) of CO2 equivalent by retreading 34 tires, avoiding 3,083 liters of oil use.

Climate change remains a significant global challenge, with substantial risks for future mining operations. As a responsible steward of the environment, managing climate-related risks to its operations, communities, and society is a key priority for Newmont.

The company’s recent climate report detailed how it manages climate impact through scenario planning and risk analysis, including the effects of inflation and geopolitical factors. Newmont has a dedicated Energy and Decarbonization program and has embedded emission reduction targets into its capital investment and business planning processes.

Newmont’s efforts towards sustainable and responsible environmental management have been recognized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines, with Akyem and Ahafo South mines being named Best Green Mine in 2023 and 2022 editions of the Ghana Mining Industry Awards respectively.

In 2021, Newmont announced a $100 million strategic alliance with Caterpillar Inc. to revolutionize the mining industry, aiming for zero-emissions mining through the development and deployment of electric and autonomous mining equipment.

Newmont continues to demonstrate its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of mining and leading the way towards a more sustainable and responsible future.

Newmont showcases its responsible, sustainability  practices at 2024 West Africa Mining Confab

0

Newmont is leading the way in responsible mining with a strong focus on environment, social, and governance (ESG) practices. Recognizing the vital role of ESG in business success, Newmont has integrated these principles into its operations. A Forbes survey showed that over 90% of CEOs believe sustainability is key to their company’s success, and Newmont is no exception.

The mining giant has been recognized for its outstanding ESG performance, landing a spot on the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for 16 years in a row. This places Newmont among the top 10% of the world’s largest 2,500 companies for sustainability practices. The company’s efforts have earned them the title of sector leader for eight years in a row.

At this year’s West African Mining and Power Conference and Exhibition organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines in Accra from 5th -7th June, 2024, Newmont showcased its sustainable operations as well as interventions to ensure enhanced outcomes in environmental management, water stewardship, climate resilience and sustainable communities.

Environmental management and water stewardship

Contributing to discussions at the event on ESG in the Mining and Energy Sectors, Ms. Charlotte Tay Senyo, the Senior Manager for Sustainability Projects at Newmont Africa, stated, “for Newmont, ESG and sustainability are fundamental to our success, and we are committed to continuously advancing practices that protect people, draw value into the economy, support host communities and safeguard the environment.”

Ms. Senyo indicated how Newmont strives to achieve shared value in the implementation of its ESG programmes through partnership with external stakeholders, host community leaders and regulators to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome of value creation.

Similarly, Albert Ainoo, the Regional Director for Environmental Affairs, at Newmont’s operation in Ghana emphasized Newmont’s water stewardship, strategies for minimizing environmental impacts, and eco-friendly practices in the operations.

He noted: “When it comes to waste management, mine waste can have long and short-term impacts on the environment. The long-term consequences can be particularly costly. It is against this backdrop that Newmont has instituted policies mandating that each mining site establishes procedures to manage environmental impacts associated with waste and water effectively.”

“Water that accumulates in mining pits often drains out from our waste dumps, creating what is referred to as impacted water. To prevent this water from flowing into and polluting nearby rivers, we carefully manage it by directing it to engineered ponds. It is our standard practice to ensure that water is thoroughly treated before it is utilized for any purpose,” Mr. Ainoo added.

Newmont has emphasized its commitment to tackling climate change head-on with a promise to become carbon neutral by 2050. The organization committed US$500 million to climate initiatives and have set science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Newmont is also working with Caterpillar to create battery-powered mining trucks, which will help reduce emissions even further.

Newmont’s commitment to ESG is more than just a business strategy; it’s a fundamental part of how they operate, ensuring they can protect people, support communities, and safeguard the environment while also being a successful and profitable company.

U.S, British and Dutch passports are all vanity – Prophet Kofi Oduro

0
Prophet Kofi Oduro

Prophet Kofi Oduro, the lead pastor of Alabaster International Ministries, has expressed his displeasure with persons who equate the value of a foreign passport with a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD).

The outspoken man of God believes it is absurd for individuals to dispute the merits of having a foreign passport vs a PhD, especially when others are working to offer innovative solutions to help the globe.

Prophet Oduro addressed his congregation, calling the continuing social media discussions on passports and PhDs “nonsense.”

He stated that such talks are inherently erroneous since they have no value in death and are irrelevant to one’s salvation.

“Now, if someone possesses a Dutch passport, does it mean they no longer require education? They are demeaning education. While there are individuals conducting research into artificial intelligence and other areas, we are here talking nonsense,” he lamented.

“What significance does an American or British passport hold? It’s all vanity, and I’m indifferent to your opinion. When Ebony passed away, she didn’t take her visa-filled passport with her. I’ve lived overseas and am familiar with how things operate. There are opportunities, but it’s not as simple as it seems,” he fumed.

Kofi Gabs, a Ghanaian who works as a cleaner in the Netherlands, started the dispute. According to Kofi Gabs, widely known as Mr Happiness, a Dutch passport is more valuable than a PhD from Ghana.

Kofi Gabs made this comment after obtaining Dutch citizenship and a passport. His remark has generated an internet controversy. Do you still agree with him, or has Prophet Oduro convinced you?

UG Dean of Students clarifies cancellation of Shatta Wale show

Shatta Wale and Dean of Students of University of Ghana, Professor Rosina Kyeremanten

The Dean of Students Affairs at the University of Ghana, Professor Rosina Kyeremanten, has responded to allegations regarding the cancellation of Shatta Wale’s performance at the Reunion Rave Artistes Night organised by the TF Hostel.

In an interview with Radio Univers, she told Campus Express that the organisers of the programme did not follow the right procedure while submitting their proposal for the event.

“It is not true there was approval for the artiste night (Reunion Rave) for TF. Normally, what happens is that if any event is going to be organized in any hall a request for approval is sent to my Office (Dean’s Office) with an outline of the program they intend to organise.

What they said they were going to do on Saturday was Karaoke Night and so we gave approval. As far as I am concerned there is a big difference between a Karaoke Night and Artiste Night,” she noted.

According to the Dean, the authorities needed prior notice of the nature of the event to help in providing adequate security.

“The University has no issues with Shatta Wale. The University doesn’t have anything to do with Shatta Wale. Limann Hall sent a letter requesting approval for their programs including Artist Night and I forwarded it to PRO VC because of the ban on public gatherings and the final approval comes from him.

I didn’t even know who was on the bill to perform until I later saw their flyers and it was Stonebwoy so I called the President (of the Hall) to assure me of the security. Their letter had to go to the Legon Police District Command and I also asked them to get extra security,” Professor Rosina said.

She further noted that “when you are having an artiste night, it comes with a lot of implications: Security and others. So we need to ensure there is enough security and that is why you need approval from the University Authority. Mind you there is still a ban on students gathering so you cannot just get up and bring an artiste like Shatta Wale without the adequate and necessary arrangements being made.”

Akwaboah

Famous Hilife Artiste, Akwaboah Jnr. has clarified that there is no truth to the claim that his pastor once urged him not to marry a woman with whom he shares a child.

Akwaboah, who tied the knot with his 28-year-old partner Theresa in May, addressed the speculation during an interview on The Delay Show on June 8, 2024.

He emphatically stated that the allegation was false, asserting his independence in choosing his partner.

“At my age and with my experience, must someone force a lady on me?” he retorted, recounting how he met his wife. “He [the pastor] didn’t introduce her to me. She’s my pastor’s secretary, so whenever I want to see my pastor, I’ll go through her. And I noticed I liked her, I proposed to her, and we’re where we are.”

Regarding the claim that his pastor intervened in his personal affairs, Akwaboah clarified, “So, the claims that our pastor forced her on me are untrue. He never asked me to quit my relationship with my baby mama.”

He went on to reveal that his wife is “a midwife by profession.”

Akwaboah, a member of Prophet Amoako Atta’s Lord’s Parliament Chapel, explained that he parted ways with his previous partners due to irreconcilable differences.

“She was pregnant, we separated, and I decided to take care of my son,” he explained. “A lot happened before we separated, but I wouldn’t go into it. I took my son when he was a year old, and he’s now ten years old.”

He further disclosed his parental responsibilities, stating, “I have two kids with two women. The second born is five years old; the child is in the UK with the mother, and I take care of that child as well.”
