The bill seeking to prohibit the use of foreign currency in Nigeria has scaled first reading in the House of Senate.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, No. 7, to Prohibit the Use of Foreign Currencies for Remuneration and Other Related Matters,” was sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, Senator Ned Nwoko.

DAILY POST reports that the proposed legislation is aimed at ensuring all payments including salaries and other transactions are done using the local currency, naira.

According to Senator Nwoko, the widespread use of foreign currencies in the country’s financial system undermines the value of the Naira, which he said, perpetuates economic challenges.

The lawmaker described the use of the Dollar, Pound Sterling, and other foreign currencies for transactions in Nigeria as a colonial relic that continues to hinder Nigeria’s economic independence.

‘Return govt vehicles in your possession’, Edo Govt issues 72-hr ultimatum to Ighodalo, others

Edo State Governor-elect Monday Okpebholo

The Edo State Government has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last governorship election in the state, Asue Ighodalo and other supporters of the party, to return government vehicles in their possession.

Chairman, Government Assets Recovery Committee of the state, Kelly Okungbowa recently appointed by Governor Monday Okpebholo gave the order on Tuesday.

Okpebholo had set up an assets recovery committee to recover government assets including vehicles still in the hands of private individuals.

Okungbowa who disclosed this to journalists on Monday said some of the vehicles belonging to the moribund government transport company, Edo Line were allegedly sold and have been discovered in a spare parts market in Benin City, the Edo state capital.

He said “We want to use this medium to appeal to those people whose names have been mentioned, to please return those vehicles to the authorities, because they are not my property. Those vehicles are the property of the state government, for the Edo people. And we all know the cost of buying one vehicle. To buy a brand new Hilux costs you nothing less than N120 million. Where do they expect the governor to get that kind of money to purchase new vehicles?

“We want to appeal to them, especially the candidate of the PDP, Barrister Asue Ighodalo and his running mate. It is good for us to also advise them as a father and leader in the state, that they should do the right thing by returning those vehicles.

“It may interest you that those vehicles that have recovered- the governor has directed that we should reallocate them to the agencies, and we have done that.”

IMC denied entry into Adamus Resources Ltd site

An Interim Management Committee (IMC) constituted by an Accra High Court to oversee the management of Adamus Resources Limited, has been prevented from taking over the firm.

A police detachment and some private security personnel prevented the IMC, led by Mr. Isaac Ackun, together with legal officers, from entering Adamus Resources Limited, which is situated at TelekuBokazo, in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

Responding to the issue in an interview with journalists, Mr. Ackun stated that the situationat  Adamus Resources Limited and its management had escalated into a complex legal and security matter, involving several parties with conflicting interests.

He explained that the IMC, which was appointed by an Accra High Court ruling on July 27, 2023, visited Adamus Resources Limited’s TelekuBokazo Mines, accompanied by newly recruited security personnel to secure the company’s operations.

He said the committee was mandated to oversee the company’s affairs, particularly as it had been embroiled in disputes concerning its ownership and management.

Mr. Ackun said: “The dispute revolves around Angela List, a purported Director of the Company, and Moses/ Kobina Bosompim, who are accused of attempting to unlawfully transfer 90 per cent of the shares in Adamus Resources Pty Limited (Adamus Australia) to Nguvu Mining Ltd through a questionable share transfer agreement.

“This move occurred during ongoing legal proceedings in Australia regarding Angela List’s alleged unlawful control over Adamus Australia. A case was filed in the High Court of Ghana, challenging the legitimacy of this share transfer.”

According to him, despite the efforts by the IMC to visit the company’s offices and Mines earlier this year, the group had been blocked by a police intervention.

Mar Ackun stated: “The IMC is facing significant opposition, both from local police and political figures, while trying to exercise its legal mandate to oversee and secure the operations of Adamus Resources Ltd. The outcome of this dispute will likely depend on the results of ongoing investigations and legal proceedings.”

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dodzie Hlodzie, the Esiama Divisional Police Commander, stated that the IMC had ignored a police advice to secure a court directive to enable them to assist the committee to execute their mandate, hence, the idea behind stopping the IMC from taking over the site.

Bolt kicks against offline trips, intensifies safety for all

Bolt

Bolt, a ride-hailing transport company, has called on its drivers to desist from offline trips to help promote safe driving practices and enhance the security of their clients.

Mr Henry Whyte, Senior Operations Manager of Bolt, who made the call, expressed worry about the growing trend, especially in Kumasi, where drivers opt for offline trips due to fuel price increase and bargain with riders.

“This is a dangerous act, because when one engages in this, Bolt does not have the track of the ride. If one takes an offline trip with a rider, it means one has taken a trip off the app, and Bolt does not have visibility into your movement and if anything happens on the trip, Bolt cannot help you out,” he explained and called on drivers to desist from offline trips to enhance safety.

Mr Whyte, speaking at Bolt’s Driver Safety Summit in Kumasi, indicated that safety was increasingly becoming more important due to the feedback including general accidents and thefts, which were on the rise from both drivers and passengers.

He indicated that it was necessary for the company to pay attention to these complaints and put in measures to safeguard drivers and riders.

The summit provided the platform to discuss safety innovations, share experiences and strengthen Bolt’s commitment to create and augment a secure ride-hailing experience.

It was also used to address concerns about pricing to improve earnings.

Mr Amos Abakah, Ashanti Regional Director, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), indicated that, pick up to drop off must be regulated to ensure that at every point in time proper monitoring could take place, there is trace, feedback, and accountability.

As a result of this, he said, a number of systems had been put in place to resolve these security challenges.

They included operators of digital transport registering with the DVLA and being certified to obtain a “digital transport system operator identity,” operators must have a registered company whose nature of business is operating digital transport and be registered with the Ghana Revenue Authority.

Operators should have safety policies in place for passengers and drivers, operators should have a system for receiving and resolving complaints and the fare charged by the digital transport operating system should be competitive, fair, and transparent.

Ghanaian musician and radio presenter Blakk Rasta, has expressed his wish to have parliamentarians use Pidgin English as a medium of expression in Ghana’s parliament.

Accoding to him, this will help a lot of people understand what is discussed on the floor of parliament.

“I’m glad having people like A Plus who speak Pidgin in Parliament. I have heard him speak Pidgin. I have heard Baba Sadiq also speak Pidgin. I want to hear Pidgin in Parliament, to the level of the people. The big English is too much,” he told Kwame Dadzie in an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z.

Blakk said that instead of always waiting for the media to explain the complicated issues that are raised in parliament, having the business of parliament discussed in Pidgin English will help break the communication barrier.

“Radicalise the parliament house. Bring it to the level of the people. Encourage them to be part of the discussions. When the are discussing things in parliament, it is like bourgeoisies drinking tea. So we all stay back waiting for the news people to break it down for us to digest. I want to hear pidgin in parliament,” he further noted.

Meanwhile, Blakk Rsata has also revealed that he had planned on an exit from the country before the election.

According to him, while awaiting the outcome of the election, he needed a better alternative to live his life so he travelled abroad to facilitate that process.

I was almost assassinated in 2021 but British intelligence foiled plot -Pope

0
Pope Francis

Pope Francis has said he escaped a double suicide bombing during a visit to Iraq three years ago after the attempts on his life were foiled by British intelligence and Iraqi police.

Francis made the revelation in his upcoming autobiography, Spera (Hope), excerpts of which were shared with Corriere della Sera on Tuesday, the pontiff’s 88th birthday.

Francis said he had been strongly advised against making the trip to Iraq in March 2021, the first by a pope, because Covid was still raging and the security risks were high, especially in Mosul, the northern city devastated by Islamic State militants.

The pope said he was determined to go ahead with the trip, however. In his recounting of events, British intelligence informed Iraqi police of the planned bombings as soon as Francis arrived in Baghdad. In turn, the Iraqi police informed the Vatican’s security detail.

The pontiff described how one of the suicide bombers was a woman who was heading towards Mosul to blow herself up during the papal visit. A truck was also “heading there fast with the same intention”, he said.

In the book, written with the Italian author Carlo Musso and due to be published in January, Francis said he later asked Vatican security what had become of the suicide bombers. “The commander replied laconically: ‘They’re no longer here,’” Francis wrote. “Iraqi police had intercepted them and made them explode. This struck me as well: Even this is the poisonous fruit of war.”
