Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital creates awareness about ‘Heal KATH Project’

Hundreds of residents in the Kumasi Metropolis and management and workers of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) walked through the principal streets of Kumasi last week Thursday for over four hours, to create awareness about the Heal KATH project.

The Walk began at the main entrance of the hospital as early as 6am, with about 200 members of staff, workers and management and members of the public.

The numbers, however, increased as the procession went through the Kumasi Central Police Station through to the Vodafone and Poku Trading stretch.

From the Poku Trading route, the participants, who were intermittently talking to shoppers and handing over flyers that contained modes of donation to the ‘Heal KATH project’, took to the main Adum stretch through the Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II roundabout, Roman Hill road, principal streets of Asafo, Asawase road, Manhyia, Krofrom, Suame roundabout, Abrepo Junction, Bantama and back to the main Polyclinic at the KATH.

The project is intended to raise funds to carry out a comprehensive renovation of the existing blocks at KATH, at an estimated cost of US$10 million.

The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, said the Otumfuo Grand Health KATH Walk was to create awareness among traders, shop keepers as well as residents to contribute to support the ‘Heal KATH project’.

Prof Otchere Addai-Mensah noted that KATH is the only facility at the premier level in Ashanti region that could respond to many referrals coming from about 12 out of the 16 regions of the country.

This, he noted, makes it imperative for residents to contribute to its maintenance and retooling, since a lot people might not have the resources or luxury to travel to other countries or elsewhere, for medical attention.

The KATH CEO, therefore, appealed to all residents to donate their widow’s mite to support the project and help put KATH in a befitting position, to enable it respond to referrals and other emergency cases”.
