Work on the dualisation of the Winneba–Mankessim stretch of the Winneba–Cape Coast highway has reached 25 per cent completion, according to an update posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Ghana Highways Authority, signaling steady progress on one of government’s flagship road infrastructure projects under the “Big Push” agenda.

The 24-kilometre project, which forms Lot 2 of the broader 30km–54km Winneba–Cape Coast road corridor, commenced in December 2025 and is scheduled for completion in November 2027.

Authorities say significant groundwork has already been completed, including site clearing and the construction of major culverts and drainage systems—critical engineering components designed to ensure road durability and resilience against flooding.

Ongoing works are currently focused on subbase and base formation, as well as the construction of two key interchanges at Apam Junction and Otaw, which are expected to ease congestion at major traffic intersections along the corridor.

The project scope also includes asphalt surfacing, pedestrian underground crossings, installation of streetlights, road furniture, and designated bus stops—features aimed at improving both safety and traffic management along the route.

When completed, the dual carriageway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Cape Coast, Takoradi and the capital, Accra, while enhancing the overall flow of traffic along the coastal economic corridor.

Beyond easing congestion, the project is positioned as a catalyst for socio-economic activity, facilitating trade, tourism, and regional connectivity in the Central and Western Regions.

However, while the progress update points to steady advancement, the real test will lie in adherence to timelines, cost control, and construction quality—persistent challenges that have historically affected major public road projects in the country.
