The Chief of Apremdo, Nana Egya Kwamina XI, has questioned the apparent silence of Ghana’s entertainment celebrities in the wake of the devastating floods that have affected parts of the country, urging influential public figures to use their platforms to mobilize support for victims.

Speaking on the need for greater national solidarity during times of crisis, Nana Egya Kwamina XI said celebrities wield enormous influence that can be harnessed to raise relief funds and inspire collective action whenever disaster strikes.

Drawing comparisons with international examples, the chief cited the remarkable response of American entertainers following the devastating hurricanes that struck the United States in 2017. He noted that celebrities played a pivotal role in raising more than $44 million for hurricane relief through nationwide fundraising campaigns.

“Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Al Pacino, Lupita Nyong’o, Jay Leno and several other celebrities sat at phone banks to receive donations. Beyoncé, Will Smith and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson also recorded televised appeals that were broadcast across multiple television networks and online platforms to encourage people to support victims,” Nana Egya Kwamina XI recounted.

According to the Apremdo Chief, such demonstrations of leadership and compassion underscore the unique responsibility that celebrities have during national emergencies.

He expressed concern that similar initiatives have not been witnessed in Ghana despite the recurring impact of floods on communities across the country.

Nana Egya Kwamina XI specifically referenced the devastating floods that affected Samreboi as well as the widespread flooding that followed the heavy rains of June 29, 2026, in Accra, saying both incidents deserved stronger advocacy and coordinated relief efforts from influential personalities.

He observed that beyond entertainment, celebrities possess the ability to rally corporate organizations, philanthropic institutions and ordinary citizens behind humanitarian causes through their vast social media reach and public goodwill.

The chief therefore appealed to Ghana’s musicians, actors, media personalities, sports stars and other public figures to rise above their individual careers and champion relief efforts whenever disasters occur.
