The Veterans Administration, Ghana (VAG) has commended the Government for naming two newly constructed military barracks after two distinguished Ghanaian military officers, describing the decision as a fitting tribute to their exceptional service to the nation and the international community.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Veterans Administration, Ghana, Ex Warrant Officer I Bright Segbefia, and copied to The Chronicle.
According to the statement, the military installation at Dambai will be known as Fort Anyidoho in honour of Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho, whose leadership as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide helped save thousands of innocent lives.

The statement noted that Major General Anyidoho’s unwavering commitment to humanity and peace remains one of Ghana’s proudest contributions to international peacekeeping.
It further stated that the barracks at Ajumako Asiam would be named Erskine Barracks in honour of the late Lieutenant General Emmanuel Alexander Erskine, the first Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose pioneering leadership established Ghana’s enviable reputation in global peacekeeping operations.
According to Ex WOI Segbefia, both officers are recipients of Ghana’s Distinguished Service Order (DSO), the nation’s highest military honour, and have also received prestigious international decorations for gallantry and distinguished service.
The statement expressed profound appreciation to the President of the Republic, the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command for what VAG described as the historic decision to immortalise the two military heroes.
“It is very heart-warming that even as veterans, our sacrifices while in active service are remembered and acknowledged,” the statement said.
The Veterans Administration said the recognition reaffirms the nation’s commitment to preserving the rich heritage of sacrifice, courage and selfless service that defines the Ghana Armed Forces.
It also expressed the hope that the honour bestowed on the two distinguished officers would inspire younger generations of Ghanaians to emulate their exemplary values of patriotism, courage and selfless service.
