The Central Regional Police Command has arrested six persons in connection with Monday’s violent attacks at New Winneba, which left three people dead and about 15 others, including a police officer, injured.
The deceased were confirmed dead by a medical officer, while the injured were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
According to a police statement, the violence erupted at about 10:40 a.m. on September 1, 2026, when an estimated 300-member mob, allegedly drawn from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, stormed New Winneba.
The mob, the police said, was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and allegedly attacked residents, as well as stores and other properties belonging to natives of the town.
Six suspects — Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22 — have since been arrested and are assisting the police with investigations.
Police personnel from the Winneba, Agona Swedru and Mankessim divisions, supported by the Inspector-General of Police’s special team and two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, have been deployed to reinforce security in the area.
The police said a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were retrieved from the crime scene.
To prevent further violence, six snap checkpoints have been mounted in the area, while day-and-night patrols have been intensified. Personnel from the Police Intelligence Department (PID) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have also been deployed to monitor developments.
The police said the situation has since been brought under control and the area remains calm.The six suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
