The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects during an intelligence-led operation at the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi, on Monday, for allegedly dealing in unregistered pharmaceutical products.

The suspects were identified as Abdul Karim Ramadan, 20; Wisdom Pakindam Jatuat, 38; Razak Issahaku, 37; Abdul Rahman Yakubu, 45; Iddrisu Mohammed, 26 and Nana Abio Godwin, 27.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU) with investigations.

They were arrested on board a DAF XF truck with registration number AW 5113-21.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, stated in a press release that the operation was carried out by personnel of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team (SOT) from the National Police Headquarters, Accra.

A search on the vehicle led to the recovery of 17 fertilizer sacks containing pharmaceutical tablets suspected to be unregistered.

The exhibits comprised 10 sacks of tablets labelled Dyclosa 50mg and seven sacks of tablets labelled Royal Chest and Lungs.

The recovered pharmaceutical products have been retained as exhibits and will be handed over to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for examination and further investigation to determine their registration status, composition and compliance with the provisions of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

DSP Ahianyo assured that the Ghana Police Service remains committed to working closely with the Food and Drugs Authority and other relevant stakeholders to combat the illegal sale and distribution of unregistered pharmaceutical products and to protect public health.

He encouraged the public to provide credible information on the illegal sale, distribution, or manufacture of pharmaceutical products to the nearest police station or through the appropriate emergency channels.
