When two people recall the exact same family dispute, business meeting, or street corner argument in completely different ways, the natural response is suspicion, but the true culprit is rarely deliberate dishonesty, it is the fundamental biology of the human brain.
This is known as reconstructive memory, which is term used to describe a process in which the act of remembering is influenced by various other cognitive processes including our perception the way we imagine things and sometimes our believes, amongst others.
Dr. Elizabeth Loftus’s theory of memory is that human memory is reconstructive rather than a fixed video recording and she demonstrated that memories are malleable and easily distorted by misinformation, leading questions, and post-event suggestions, meaning people can vividly remember events that never actually happened.
The Neurological and Biological Causes of Faulty Recall
One major neurological cause is retroactive interference, where new information, post-event gossip, or even a lawyer’s suggestive question physically overwrites the original synaptic connections holding the memory.
The stress hormone cortisol, which floods the brain during heated arguments, directly impairs the hippocampus’s ability to retrieve contextual details like time, place, and exact wording.
However, cognitive scientists now warn that your daily diet and physical health are just as guilty: low blood glucose from skipped meals or excessive processed sugar starves the hippocampus of its primary fuel, crippling its ability to encode spatial and temporal details with any accuracy.
Chronic dehydration, so common in the Ghanaian heat, thickens the blood and reduces oxygen delivery to the brain’s memory centers, while a deficiency in Omega-3 fatty acids weakens the synaptic membranes that hold neural connections together.
Sleep deprivation, which plagues many professionals and students, physically shrinks the hippocampus over time and prevents the glymphatic system from clearing neurotoxic waste, leaving the prefrontal cortex too exhausted to fact-check the amygdala’s emotional exaggerations.
Untreated health stressors like chronic malaria, typhoid, or systemic inflammation release cytokines that cross the blood-brain barrier, directly disrupting the synaptic plasticity required for accurate memory retrieval and accelerating retrospective bias.
Dr. Daniel Schacter of Harvard calls this retrospective bias, a process where our current feelings about a colleague actively rewrite our neural archives of how that colleague treated us six months ago.
The Trap of Sincerity in Conflict
In daily life, this biological and dietary editing process creates a dangerous trap: we dangerously equate a person’s sincere emotional conviction with factual accuracy.
“In mediation, the hardest disputes to resolve aren’t the ones where someone is deliberately lying,” observes a legal practitioner and community mediator based in Accra, “the hardest ones are where both parties are deeply, genuinely convinced of their opposing versions.”
Because the amygdala generates such a vivid emotional response during recall, any contradiction feels like a direct attack on personal integrity rather than a simple neurological or nutritional misfiring.
Once a relational rift opens, the brain’s confirmation bias accelerates the distortion, causing it to magnify details that support our victimhood while entirely suppressing contradictory sensory input from that day.
Practical Measures to Control Memory Distortion
To control this neural chaos, practice “temporal distancing” by waiting at least twenty-four hours before asserting a contentious memory, allowing the amygdala’s acute emotional charge to naturally subside.
Prioritize dietary discipline: maintain stable blood glucose by eating balanced meals with proteins and complex carbohydrates, drink at least two litres of water daily to preserve cerebral blood flow, and consider Omega-3-rich foods like fish or walnuts to fortify synaptic integrity.
Treat underlying health conditions aggressively, because managing chronic infections, improving sleep hygiene with a strict six-to-eight-hour schedule, and reducing refined sugar intake are not just medical necessities but critical conflict-resolution strategies.
Implement the “external storage” rule immediately after critical meetings or contract discussions, because writing down factual data on paper bypasses the brain’s unreliable synaptic retrieval system entirely.
During active conflicts, forcibly pivot the conversation from debating historical playbacks to assessing current emotional impacts, a tactical shift that forces the prefrontal cortex to engage in rational problem-solving rather than emotional reliving.
Regular mindfulness meditation has been clinically shown to strengthen prefrontal cortex regulation, increasing the brain’s metacognitive ability to recognize when a memory feels vividly certain but is objectively inaccurate.
For business contracts, project deliverables, or committee decisions, relying on written records eliminates the friction caused by fragile human recall, fatigue, and poor nutrition down the line.
Building “Memory Humility”
Accepting that our hippocampi are vulnerable to what we eat, how we sleep, and our overall health is not an excuse to abandon accountability, but rather a practical framework for handling disagreements without blowing them out of proportion.
Separate honesty from accuracy: realize that a person can be completely sincere and entirely mistaken simply because they skipped breakfast, slept poorly, or are fighting an infection, and dropping the immediate accusation of deliberate deceit opens the door to constructive dialogue.
Most human conflicts do not start with bad intentions; they start with the quiet, unseen synaptic edits, glucose deficits, and inflammatory responses our minds endure every single day.
Before the next argument becomes a bitter battle, remember: your memory may feel certain, but certainty is merely a feeling generated by the amygdala and heavily influenced by your last meal and last night’s sleep.
Sometimes, peace in our homes and workplaces begins with simply questioning what our tired, hungry, or stressed brains insist we remember.
