The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Suman Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned Members of Parliament against turning the House into what he described as a “rally ground,” following scenes of disorder after the President’s address.

Tension flared in the Chamber shortly after President John Dramani Mahama delivered the State of the Nation Address. The situation escalated when the Minority Leader concluded his remarks, triggering loud reactions from both sides of the political divide and plunging the foyer of the House into a noisy standoff.

A visibly displeased Speaker Bagbin rose to restore order, firmly reminding MPs that Parliament is a House of deliberation, not partisan agitation.

“Parliament is not a rally ground,” he declared.

He further warned members against conduct that undermines the dignity of the legislature, stressing that Parliament reserves the authority to sanction its members where necessary.

“Parliament has the right to terminate your membership,” the Speaker cautioned. “This is a reminder to you all.”

His remarks brought a measure of calm to the Chamber, as proceedings resumed under heightened calls for discipline and decorum.
