President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that more than 40 per cent of Ghanaians are living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), describing the situation as a growing public health concern.

According to him, NCDs now account for over 40 per cent of all deaths in Ghana and continue to impose a heavy financial burden on households, pushing many families into poverty.

To confront the challenge, President Mahama announced the introduction of the Ghana Health Care Established Programme, popularly known as the “Mahama Care” programme. He explained that the initiative is the first nationwide programme specifically designed to strengthen prevention, early detection and management of NCDs.

The President further noted that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has been uncapped to enhance healthcare delivery across the country.

He clarified that the GH¢34.7 billion referenced in his address represents the allocated budget for the health sector, aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and services nationwide.

President Mahama made these remarks while presenting the State of the Nation Address in Parliament.
