Israeli troops stay inside south Lebanon after withdrawal deadline

0
Villagers have been returning to areas vacated by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon

Israel has pulled its forces from southern Lebanon apart from five positions, Lebanon’s state news agency says. Israel’s withdrawal is a key part of the ceasefire which ended a year-long conflict with Shia militant group Hezbollah.

Israeli ministers said some troops would remain inside Lebanon to protect Israel’s northern communities.

In response, Lebanon said Israel must withdraw completely. It said it would consider “the continued Israeli presence in any inch of Lebanese territory an occupation”.

The ceasefire requires Israel to withdraw and for Lebanon’s army to replace all armed groups south of the Litani River, about 30km (20 miles) north of Israel.

Hezbollah was the dominant force in the area for decades, but was heavily damaged in the conflict, the deadliest fought with Israel since the militant group was formed in 1982.

Lebanese authorities say more than 3,960 people – many of them civilians – were killed during the hostilities, and one million others were displaced from areas where Hezbollah had a strong presence.

Israeli authorities say more than 80 Israeli soldiers and 47 civilians were killed. About 60,000 citizens were displaced from northern Israel.

Most of those displaced in Lebanon have returned home, the UN says, while only a minority of those displaced in Israel have done so, according to reports.

The positions where Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops have been deployed are in mountainous terrain on the edge of the internationally recognised border between Lebanon and Israel.

US and Russia start talks over end to Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

US and Russian officials have been meeting in Saudi Arabia for talks to end the war in Ukraine, leaving Kyiv to watch from afar.

While the talks have been framed as “exploratory” by both sides, it is already clear that Moscow is insisting on conditions that will be unacceptable to Ukraine and its allies.

Talks between Russia and the United States are a “huge accomplishment” after years of enmity, Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and part of Moscow’s negotiating team in Saudi Arabia, told CNN.

The uptick in US-Russia relations is “starting from a very low base,” Dmitriev said Tuesday after talks wrapped in Riyadh, citing the lack of communication under the Biden administration.

Tuesday’s talks were “respectful” and the two sides aimed to “understand each other’s position,” he said.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said “extraordinary opportunities” could be available for both the United States and Russia if the war in Ukraine ends.

Rubio said the US and Russia are “beginning to engage in identifying extraordinary opportunities that exist should this conflict come to an acceptable end,” following talks in Riyadh.

Rubio said there are “credible opportunities” for the US to “partner with the Russians geopolitically on issues of common interest and, frankly, economically.”

The United States and Russia agreed on four principles following talks that lasted more than four hours in Saudi Arabia, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said.

Envirotech Bamboo Limited (EBL), a leading bamboo product manufacturing and landscape restoration company, in partnership with Bright Generation Community Foundation (BGCF), has embarked on agro-forestry and ecological landscape restoration training programme, aimed at empowering women and youth in bamboo endowed communities.

Ms. Bernice Dapaah, Founder of Envirotech Bamboo Limited (EBL), explained that the initiative seeks to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to promote environmental conservation and economic development.

She disclosed that the training programme also focuses on sensitising and educating communities on the adoption of bamboo as a substitute for tree species cultivation on degraded and mined-out lands. This approach aims to restore forest cover, enhance food security and provide sustainable livelihoods.

According to her, several existing natural bamboo stands remain unmanaged because of lack of dedicated growers, saying proper management and utilisation of the bamboo resource could significantly contribute to local income generation and economic stability.

Ms Dapaah emphasised the company’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with local government representatives and traditional leaders to revitalise the local economy by leveraging biodiversity-driven initiatives such as agro-forestry, which supports both individuals and communities in building a resilient agricultural economy.

She indicated that EBL is also poised to collaborate with Artisan Associations at both local and national levels to enhance technological innovation for primary consumers in the commodity sector.

The partnership, she said, is expected to improve the efficiency and quality of bamboo-based products and related agricultural solutions.

She stated that through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research – Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG), EBL will enhance its reforestation and agro-forestry programmes and contribute to environmental conservation, biodiversity promotion, and sustainable community development practices.

Mr. Godwin Aboyo Owusu revealed the importance of government-led awareness campaigns and education Programmes in enabling farmers to adopt agro-forestry systems.

He expressed the view that such initiatives would not only strengthen local economies, but also position EBL and BGCF as key institutions providing agricultural extension services and capacity-building opportunities in fringe communities.

Mr. Paul Annor Effah, the project officer, stated that engaging communities and forming strategic partnerships will ensure the success of yearly plantation programmes.

He noted that the initiatives align with EBL and BGCF’s goals to restore degraded forest reserves and establish agro-forestry plantations, by integrating food crops alongside bamboo and tree species, farmers would benefit from enhanced food production and increased economic opportunities.

The Project officer stressed that EBL remains committed to sustainable ecological restoration and agribusiness development, empowering communities while ensuring environmental sustainability.

Signs You’re Mentally Exhausted

0

What Is Mental Exhaustion?

It’s kind of like physical tiredness, except it’s your mind instead of your muscles. It tends to show up when you focus on a mentally tough task for a while. You might also feel this kind of brain drain if you’re always on alert or stressed out. Your job, caring for children or aging parents, and other things can lead to mental exhaustion.

You’re Angry or Impatient

Mental fatigue can put you in a bad mood. You may be short-tempered or irritated, snapping at people more often. It’s harder to control your emotions when you’re mentally tapped out.

You Can’t Get Work Done

Everyone’s productivity goes up and down. But mental exhaustion can make it really hard to concentrate. It also saps your motivation. You might get distracted easily or start to miss deadlines. Even small tasks may seem overwhelming.

You Zone Out

This can look like mind wandering or drowsiness. It makes it hard to pay close attention to what you’re doing, and you may not react to things very fast. That can be dangerous in certain situations, such as driving. Mental fatigue is linked to car wrecks.

You Do Unhealthy Things

You may start to drink or use drugs more than normal. Mental fatigue can take an even harder toll on those who already have a substance use disorder. Experts think that’s because drug addiction changes parts of the brain that help you manage stress and control impulsive behavior.

You’re Depressed

You may not have any energy or feel like you’re moving in slow motion. Some people say they feel numb. That can make it hard to finish things at work or do daily activities. Tell your doctor if you have really low feelings or a sense of hopelessness for longer than 2 weeks. That can be a sign your depression is more serious.

You Worry a Lot

Mental fatigue triggers your sympathetic nervous system. That’s your “fight or flight” mode. Anxiety is an alarm that tells you something is wrong. If you’re always mentally exhausted, you might start to feel panicked or worried all the time. That often happens alongside symptoms of depression.

Exercise Feels Harder

Experts aren’t sure why mental fatigue affects physical activity. Some think your tolerance for exercise might go down. So it may seem like you’re putting in more effort than you really are.

Your Eating Habits Change

Mental fatigue can affect your appetite in different ways. You may snack more than normal and not pay attention to what you eat. Stress can also make you crave sugary, salty, or fatty foods. Or you may not be hungry at all.

You Make More Mistakes

It’s impossible for your work to be perfect all the time. But mental fatigue lessens your ability to catch and fix your mistakes quickly or at all. That can cause serious problems in certain jobs, such as ones where you use machines, drive a vehicle, or fly a plane.

You Feel More Pain

Everyone is different, which makes it hard to say how mental fatigue will affect your body. But you might get headaches, sore muscles, back pain, or stomach problems. If you have an ongoing illness, such as fibromyalgia, you may hurt a little bit more than usual.

Take Breaks

You might feel less drained if you take short breaks during long stretches of mental work. There isn’t an exact amount of rest time that works best for everyone. But you may want to recharge for a few minutes every 1-2 hours.

Some people like to use something called the Pomodoro Technique. Here’s how it works:

  1. Set a timer for 25 minutes.
  2. Focus on one task the whole time.
  3. Take a 5-minute break when the timer goes off.
  4. After the fourth 25-minute block, take a break for 15-30 minutes.

Repeat until your task is done (or your workday is over).

Get Active

There’s evidence that you may feel even more energized if you exercise during your breaks. Try some jumping jacks and stretches for a few minutes each. Or go for a 10-15 minute brisk walk.

Find Ways to Relax

It’s hard to avoid mental exhaustion completely. But you can learn to switch on your body’s natural relaxation response. You can get a massage. Or you can try meditating, yoga, or something as simple as watching a funny movie.  Reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional if you need more support.

Christian Atsu Foundation to be launched

The date was February 5, 2023. Hatayspor needed a breakthrough in their Turkish Super Lig game against Kasimpasa. Coming in as an 82nd-minute substitute, Christian Atsu would go on to score with virtually the last kick of the game to seal a 1-0 win.

Atsu’s strike was celebrated widely by supporters of the club as well as the management, players and technical team of Hatayspor and the Ghanaian was ready to build on something positive after what was also his first goal for the club.

Little did everyone know that was just his way of saying goodbye to everyone around him. An unfortunate incident struck in the early hours of February 6, 2023; a devastating earthquake in which the Ghanaian was a victim.

The search for him lasted days as the death toll from the earthquake incident kept rising every time.

12 days after the incident, Atsu’s agent and manager, Nana Sechere, announced on social media that the body of the Ghana international had been recovered, a news that wrecked the hearts of many. Atsu was no more.

Takyi Arhin slams Hearts and Kotoko for demanding slots on GFA Executive Council

0
Takyi Arhin

General Manager of Aduana Stars FC, Takyi Arhin has slammed giants Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko over the demands they are making before the Ghana Premier League should resume.

Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak in a joint statement, while reacting to the death of Nana Pooley, have made certain demands to the Ghana Football Association before they return to play in the local league.

“Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko are urging the adoption of enhanced security protocols and other measures, and are eager to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders, including Government, the GFA, law enforcement agencies, and dedicated supporters. Their shared goal is to ensure that football remains a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

“The clubs earnestly call upon the Ghana Football Association to take prompt and decisive action on the recommendations outlined in their position paper.”

The demands include automatic slots for them on the Executive Council. This has triggered Takyi Arhin who has said that Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are no more special, so they shouldn’t expect any special treatment.

“We are not justifying what happened in Nsoatre, we condemn it and we mourn with the family. But don’t use this tragedy to demand an Exco slot because you are the most glamorous clubs. That argument is neither here nor there. They are like any other club in the country.”

He added that Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko should come to the realisation that they are no longer superior.

“Today, if Kotoko is playing, you can count the fans in the stadium within three minutes. The same applies to Hearts of Oak. We [small clubs] used our matches against Kotoko and Hearts for budgeting, but that’s no longer the case.”

“How many times have Kotoko and Hearts won the league in the last 10 years?” he quizzed.

Drop misconduct charges against Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom -Ibrahim Sannie Daara

Ibrahim Saanie Daara

Senior CAF Media Officer Ibrahim Saanie Daara has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to reconsider its charges against Elmina Sharks owner, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom, following a violent incident at the Nduom Sports Stadium.

However, Daara, a former GFA spokesperson, stressed the importance of business figures like Dr Nduom in supporting the growth of football in Ghana.

He urged the GFA to reconsider its stance, emphasizing that it’s not always necessary to charge individuals in such situations.

Daara also noted that Dr Nduom attempted to calm the crowd on the pitch and suggested that patience and diplomacy should be exercised when handling such issues.

“We need people like Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom to invest in our game,” he told Asempa FM.

“Regardless of what has happened, it shouldn’t always be about charging people. I have heard an account that he even went on the pitch to calm the fans so let’s exercise patience in terms of decision making.

“What if he gets angry and dissolves the team? He has his stadium and so the GFA should consider all these things.

“Any decision he makes will affect the Division One League and we should also remember that this is someone who has previously sponsored the Division One League.

“Maybe he is wrong but sometimes, we need diplomacy in resolving such issues,” he added.

GFA charges Paa Kwesi Nduom over pitch incident and misconduct

Elmina Sharks owner Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom

Elmina Sharks owner Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom is facing serious charges from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following an incident during his team’s Division One League clash against Swedru All Blacks.

The controversy unfolded at the Dr. Nduom Sports Complex, where Dr. Nduom stormed onto the pitch to protest a penalty decision, causing a disruption to the match.

His actions halted play and drew sharp criticism from match officials, sparking concerns over the conduct of club owners during competitive matches.

The GFA has accused Dr Nduom of not only interfering with the game but also inciting his players, officials, and supporters against the referees.

Reports suggest that he took to social media, fueling tensions and urging his followers to confront the officials, which only escalated the situation.

In light of these actions, Dr. Nduom now faces charges for violating Division One League Regulations and the GFA Disciplinary Code.

He has been given until Wednesday, February 19, 2025, to respond to the allegations.

As the case develops, the football community is closely watching how the GFA will handle the matter, with the integrity of the league hanging in the balance.
