Sakumo Ramsar Site close-in, TDC moves to demolish structures

The TDC Ghana Limited, in a bid to protect the Sakumo Ramsar site and prevent flooding, has carried out a demolition exercise, breaking down unauthorised fence walls erected by developers into the site.

The fence wall extended from Klagon towards Tema; a situation, Mr Courage Nunekpeku, the Managing Director of TDC, said was worrying and if it is allowed to continue, would lead to flooding in Tema, the motorway and other areas during the rainy season.

The Sakumo Ramsar Site, located along the Tema-Accra beach road and separated from the sea by a rail line and road, is a wetland of international importance, originally covering an area of 1,400 hectares in the Tema West Municipality.

The Sakumo Lagoon, which was proposed as a Ramsar Site in 1987, carries flood water from upstream, including some parts of the Eastern Region into the sea and serves as a fishing area for fishers, as well as a home to many migratory birds.

Leading the demolishing exercise, Mr Nunekpeku said, “It is so terrible that if you don’t act quickly, we are in for trouble, to the extent that when you take a drone view, you will see that the Ramsar site has been entirely encroached. They are narrowing it respectively from the Tema and the Klagon sides”.

He explained that if developers were allowed to narrow the opening of the Ramsar Site, floodwaters would not have a place to flow into the sea; therefore, the TDC’s resolve was to stop such activities within the core areas.

He explained that “at the buffer area – we have allowed some leverage – but the core area, where we said that nobody should come around there, we will not allow, because once you close the core area, the water will not have a place to flow when it rains. But you can see what is going on; they are seriously working day and night to just take over the entire Ramsar Site,” he said.

Mr Nunekpeku added that, “this is a wall crossing to Tema; when it was allowed, it means that we have lost it entirely.

“ It is not about TDC being aggressive to demolish, no, we want to protect the area and the citizens; we won’t wait for the rains to come in for floods to occur before we act”.

Further, they had engaged the developer and tried educating them on the consequences of their actions; it is evident that they were adamant and recalcitrant, therefore, it is important for the company to use force to protect the area, he said.

He said they would always monitor the site, but it was costly and dangerous to do so at night, as they would have to send a whole team.

“The only option is to keep your eye on it and consistently, as they build, we pull it down, and subsequently we hope they will relent and this whole thing will stop,” he said.

He further stated that they would return for similar actions heavily and very ruthlessly, stressing that none of the structures being constructed at the Ramsar Site have been granted a permit by the Tema West Municipal Assembly or the Tema Metropolitan Assembly of the TDC.

He emphasised that “they did it and quickly put themselves together and formed an association calling themselves the Ramsar Site to be Regularised Association.

“So, it means they know what they are doing; they know it is wrong, but they encroach it and come back to you to regularise.”

Mr Nunekpeku stressed that, being responsible for the enclave, he could not sit down and throw his hands in the air to allow such developments to continue and promised to sustain the demolishing exercise.

He said they were willing to engage the traditional leaders of Nungua, some of whom had sold portions of the site to developers, to find a lasting solution to the issue.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Beyoncé and Jay-Z are one of the world’s most famous power couples.

And they now have an equally famous family, with daughter Blue Ivy, 13, and seven-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir.

But Beyoncé’s mother, businesswoman and fashion designer Tina Knowles, tells me she “worries about the fame” impacting her grandchildren.

“If I had my first choice, they would not have to deal with the things that they have to deal with as kids,” she says.

Knowles, 71, says for now, the children are not too exposed to it.

“But one day they’ll read the ignorance that people put out there about them, the lies and all of that,” she says. “And I do worry about that.”

Despite those pressures, she says Beyoncé and Jay-Z – who are notoriously private about their home life – are doing an “amazing” job as parents.

“The truth is they spend abnormal amount of time with their children and they have great relationships with their kids,” she says.

“And they’re just great parents. I don’t think you could ask for better parents.”

Knowles is speaking to BBC News ahead of the publication of her new memoir, Matriarch.

It covers her childhood in Texas, her daughters’ rise to fame and her later years, as a grandmother.

Knowles now has four grandchildren, including Julez Smith, the son of her younger daughter, singer-songwriter Solange. She also considers herself a grandmother to former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland’s children.

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Davido has asserted that his hit song, ‘Dami Duro’released in 2012 was the ringtone of the then-president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Davido disclosed that a source close to the President revealed to him.

The ‘Unavailable’ hitmaker in a recent interview with Power FM in the United States opened up on his challenges with his father who did not approve of his decision to be a musician at the early stages of his career.

Legally known as David Adeleke, Davido explained that his father, Deji Adeleke later supported him after ‘Dami Duro’ received presidential accolades.

“My dad accepted my decision to do music after he heard my second single, ‘Dami Duro.’ The song blew up.

“Before then, my dad was using the police and army to stop my show and arrest show promoters, artistes, and everyone connected to any show I am billed to perform in. But when ‘Dami Duro’ became a huge success… I think it was the President’s ringtone. Someone told me. At that point, people started advising my dad to allow me to do music,” he said on April 8, 2025.

Davido further shared how he eventually decided to fulfill his father’s wish for him – to continue his education.

Davido added that he and his father are now best friends, quite a contrast to the past, when he used to be afraid of him.

Harvard University sues Trump administration to stop funding freeze

Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration claiming that its freezing of federal grants worth billions of dollars is unlawful.

Its president, Alan M Garber, announced the action on Monday in a letter to the university community which said the $2bn funding freeze would hamper critical disease research.

Harvard, the world’s richest university, last week rejected a list of demands that the Trump administration said was designed to curb diversity initiatives and fight anti-semitism at the school.

In response to the lawsuit, the White House said the “gravy train of federal assistance” was coming to an end.

Funding cuts have also been implemented at other elite universities, and a new government anti-semitism task force has identified at least 60 universities for review.

President Donald Trump has accused universities of failing to protect Jewish students during last year’s campus protests against the war in Gaza and US support for Israel.

In Monday’s letter, Mr Garber said: “The consequences of the government’s overreach will be severe and long-lasting.”

Studies on pediatric cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease would be affected, he wrote.

It said the withholding of federal funding violated Harvard’s constitutional rights and was being used as “leverage to gain control of academic decision making at Harvard”.

The Trump administration has signalled that another $1bn of federal funding could be suspended. Harvard receives about $9bn in total annually, which is mostly spent on research.

Harvard’s tax exemption status and its ability to enroll international students could also be under threat. Credit: bbc.com

At least 5 killed after gunmen open fire on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir

Gunmen at India administered Kashmir

At least five people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a group of domestic tourists visiting a popular beauty spot in Indian-administered Kashmir, authorities have told the BBC.

The attack took place in Pahalgam, a picturesque town in the Himalayas often described as the “Switzerland of India”.

The region’s chief minister, Omar Abdullah, said the attack was “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years”. Reports suggest the number of causalities is significantly higher than has so far been confirmed.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the perpetrators would “be brought to justice”.

“Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakeable and it will get even stronger,” Modi wrote in a statement on X.

Modi added that Home Minister Amit Shah would travel to Srinagar, Kashmir’s largest city, to hold an emergency meeting. The region’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, said the army and police had been deployed to the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. There has been a long-running insurgency in the Muslim-majority region since 1989, although violence has waned in recent years.

The attack took place in Baisaran, a mountain-top meadow three miles (5km) from Pahalgam.

Vehicles are unable to reach the area where the shooting occurred, Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Vidi Kumar Birdi told BBC Hindi.

A tourist from Gujarat, who was part of a group that was fired upon, said that chaos broke out after the sudden attack, and everybody started running, crying and shouting.

Video footage posted by Indian media outlets appears to show Indian troops running towards the scene of the attack, while in other footage victims can be heard saying that the gunmen had singled out non-Muslims.

Police said multiple tourists had been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. The area has been cordoned off with soldiers stopping vehicles at checkpoints while a search is underway to find the perpetrators.

Putin suggests Russia open to direct talks with Ukraine, as strikes continue

Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky

Vladimir Putin signalled he was open to talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time since the early stages of the war, but Russian strikes continued hours after his comments.

Speaking to Russian state TV on Monday, Putin said Russia had “always looked positively on any peace initiatives. We hope that representatives of the Kyiv regime will feel the same way”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin’s comments indicated a willingness to engage in direct talks with Ukraine about not striking civilian targets.

However, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continued on Tuesday with a wave of strikes across the country.

A strike on an apartment block in Zaporizhzhia killed one woman and injured 20 others, including four children.

In Kharkiv in the country’s east, authorities said a massive drone attack on Tuesday during the daytime injured at least seven people.

President Zelensky said on Tuesday afternoon there had also been strikes on Odesa, Sumy, Donetsk and other southern regions, while Ukrainian media also reported a strike in south-east Kherson.

The Monday night strike on Odesa had targeted a five-storey unit block and injured three people, local media reported. President Zelensky described the wave of attacks as “deliberate Russian terror” which could be “stopped by a single order”.

New Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan proposed, Hamas reveals

Israel-Gaza ceasefire plan proposed

A senior Palestinian official familiar with Israel-Hamas ceasefire negotiations has told the BBC that Qatari and Egyptian mediators have proposed a new formula to end the war in Gaza.

According to the official, it envisages a truce lasting between five and seven years, the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, a formal end to the war, and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

A senior Hamas delegation was due to arrive in Cairo for consultations.

The last ceasefire collapsed a month ago when Israel resumed bombing Gaza, with both sides blaming each other for the failure to keep it going.

Israel has not commented on the mediators’ plan.

Meanwhile, at least 26 Palestinians were killed and 60 others injured by Israeli air strikes across the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours, the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry said on Tuesday.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had struck “approximately 40 engineering vehicles used for terror purposes, including during the October 7th massacre”.

Tanks have also been seen moving in the southern part of Rafah city in the south of Gaza.

As Israel pushes on with its offensive, talks were due to take place in Cairo with Hamas represented at a senior level by the head of its political council, Mohammed Darwish, and its lead negotiator Khalil al-Hayya.

The meeting comes days after the movement rejected Israel’s latest proposal, which included a demand for Hamas to disarm in return for a six-week truce.
