Alabaster Box gets court approval to serve Medikal via substituted service in copyright suit

Gospel acappella group Alabaster Box has taken a significant step in its legal battle with rapper Samuel Adu Frimpong, popularly known as Medikal, over alleged copyright infringement.

The group has secured permission from the High Court in Accra to serve the artiste with court documents through substituted service.

A certified true copy of the court order, sighted by myjoyonline.com, shows that on 4th June 2025, Justice John Bosco Nabarese granted the request after Medikal reportedly evaded several attempts at personal service.

The ruling, signed by Justice John Bosco Nabarese of the High Court, General Jurisdiction (4), Accra, allows Alabaster Box to serve Medikal the writ of summons and statement of claim via alternative means. This includes posting the documents on the High Court notice board, sending them through Medikal’s verified social media handles on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram, and also delivering the documents to his WhatsApp number through his road manager, Kofi.

The application was supported by an affidavit sworn by Muwazalla Ayouba, who detailed efforts made to serve Medikal at his known residence at Spintex Road, Accra. Counsel Akua Hari Ohemeng, who held brief for Richard Subseraa Esq., made submissions on behalf of Alabaster Box.

The lawsuit, filed in April 2025, accuses Medikal of copyright infringement for allegedly sampling Alabaster Box’s hit song Akwaaba in his track Welcome to Africa without authorisation. The gospel group is claiming an award of general damages of Medikal’s infringing conduct in the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵10 million). They also demand exemplary damages in the sum of Five Million Ghana Cedis (GH₵5 million) for Medikal’s action and for attaching their brand to profane lyrics in his song – GHS5 million.

Why I quit BNI job for Gospel music – Kofi Owusu Peprah

0
Kofi Owusu Peprah

Gospel musician Kofi Owusu Peprah has revealed that he had to resign from his role at Ghana’s Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), now the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), due to a conflict between his job and his passion for music.

Speaking on Hitz FM’s Hitz Praise Zone with Nii Noi, the Yesu Nyame Ba hitmaker said the decision to leave the intelligence agency came after he received a formal query from his superiors while granting a live interview on the same station.

“I have left the BNI for about four years. It is in the studio that I received my query letter. Yes, in this house. I came for an interview. It’s a broken record but this is the first time I am being explicit about it,” he stated.

He explained that the ethics of the Bureau did not allow officers to publicly engage in music or related activities.

“I was given the opportunity to resign or quit everything relating to music, pull down all my YouTube stuff, you know. Those are the ethics: so I am saying this so that if you are in it and you wanna do music you know what you are getting yourself into,” he added.

Kofi Owusu Peprah, known for songs such as ‘Big God,’ ‘Matwen,’ and ‘Amen,’ has steadily built a name for himself in Ghana’s gospel music scene. His sound blends contemporary worship with traditional highlife elements, drawing audiences across different generations.

He is currently preparing for a major gospel concert scheduled for 17th August 2025 at Cedar Mountain Chapel in Accra.

The event is expected to feature live ministrations, guest performances, and a celebration of his musical journey so far.

Gyakie opens up about her driving force behind music career

Gyakie

Songbird Gyakie has opened up about the driving force behind her music career, revealing that it goes beyond mere passion.

According to the ‘Something’ hitmaker, her commitment to music is fuelled by an insatiable hunger to succeed and make a lasting impact in the industry.

During a revealing interview on Luv FM, Gyakie mentioned that; “My music career is not by passion. I’m hungry for it! With passion, you could be blown off. Anything can stop you, I’m not just passionate about music ’m hungry and striving to push through.”

Despite being the daughter of Highlife legend Nana Acheampong, she maintains that her journey has been far from easy; “I was really a hustler. Though Nana Acheampong is my father, he taught me to do it myself.”

This inherent drive to forge her own path, independent of her father’s renown, has undeniably shaped the artist she is today.

Gyakie also revealed that her forthcoming album, ‘After Midnight’, is complete and profoundly personal and that the album delves into themes of love, she was quick to clarify that it extends beyond romantic relationships.

“I’m actually giving out love because I love to see people happy, I’ve experienced the positive aspects of love, and those are the things I want to share.”

Her journey, however, has not been without its challenges. Gyakie openly admitted to grappling with self-doubt during the recording of one of her albums.

“I felt I didn’t do much, but after the song came out, my fans made me realise it was the best. Sometimes I want to give up, and then I get a DM saying, I love your music,’ and that’s my wake-up call. I don’t joke with my fans. They can make or unmake you.”

Burial of Zambia’s ex-president in South Africa halted at last minute by court

Ex-Zambian president Edgar Lungu was due to be privately buried in South Africa

A South African court has halted plans to bury former Zambian President Edgar Lungu at a private ceremony just as it was about to start.

The news was only announced to mourners in South Africa after a funeral mass had already finished.

This is the latest twist in a row between the government and Lungu’s family over his burial, after the family opted for a private ceremony in South Africa, rather than a full state funeral at home.

The Zambian government had filed an urgent case in the Pretoria High Court seeking to stop the burial planned by his family.

The court said that the funeral would not go ahead following an “agreement between the parties” however it appears that any funeral won’t happen until August at the earliest.

The dispute follows a long-standing feud between Lungu and his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema, with Lungu’s family saying he had indicated that Hichilema should not attend his funeral.

Following Lungu’s death in South Africa aged 68, the family wanted to be in charge of the funeral arrangements, including the repatriation of his body, but the Zambian authorities sought to take control.

The government and his family later agreed he would have a state funeral before relations broke down over the precise arrangements, prompting the family to opt for a burial in South Africa.

President Hichilema has since argued that Lungu, as a former president, “belongs to the nation of Zambia” and should be buried in the country.

The Pretoria court gave Zambian attorney general Mulilo D Kabesha until 4 July to submit his “amended notice of motion” in support of Lungu’s repatriation to Zambia. His family has until 11 July to file their opposing papers.

Kenyan police battle protestors demanding President’s resignation

Police dispersed peaceful protesters in Kenya's capital of Nairobi

Young people have been protesting to mark the first anniversary of a mass protest that culminated in the storming of Kenya’s parliament and the killing of protesters by the security forces.

Protests against the government’s plan to increase taxes erupted last June, forcing President William Ruto to retract a controversial finance bill.

Since Ruto became president in 2022, taxes on salaries have gone up, the sales tax on fuel has doubled and people are also paying a new housing levy and health insurance tax.

The controversial finance bill was aimed at raising $2.7bn (£2bn) the government said it needed to cut its reliance on external borrowing.

The clampdown by the security forces on a series of protests left at least 65 people dead, the disappearance of 89 others and the arrest of thousands, according to Amnesty International, external. The government put the death toll at 42.

Protests had fizzled out but started again this month following the death in police custody of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.

The young Kenyans, labelled Gen Z protesters, are angered by Ruto’s government, accusing it of being arrogant and untrustworthy.

They are demanding President Ruto’s resignation.

Eurostar passengers face severe delays after cable theft

Passengers queue at the Eurostar terminal at London

Eurostar passengers are facing a second day of severe delays after two people died on the railway track in France and then cables were stolen.

The high-speed rail operators says repairs are complete and the railway line is open again, but delays will last until the end of the day.

Eurostar said passengers should postpone their journey, after the disruption saw services cancelled and delayed in both directions on lines connecting London with Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Eurostar said there was already knock-on disruption on Wednesday after two people died in separate incidents on the LGV Nord line on Tuesday, but services were further impacted after cable was stolen on the same line.

The theft near Lille, which French media said was of around 600 metres of copper cables, caused trains to be rerouted, leading to extended journey times.

Further cancellations are not expected on Wednesday now that the railway line is repaired.

Eurostar said that so far, five trains between London and Paris have been cancelled.

It added that impacted passengers can change their travel plans for free or request a full refund. The operator earlier said one track had reopened, allowing some trains to run in both directions until full repairs were completed.

Water is being handed out to passengers onboard delayed trains, and stations are also very busy.

Hundreds of people are queuing at London’s St Pancras International railway station trying to access the service centre to rebook onto other trains.

Trump’s state visit to the UK to take place this year, says Buckingham Palace

0
Donald Trump and King Charles

The United Kingdom will host Donald Trump for a state visit this year, but King Charles and the US president won’t be able to meet informally over the summer due to their busy diaries, CNN understands.

The “Manu Regia” – a formal invitation signed by the British monarch – was hand delivered to the White House by representatives of the British embassy in Washington last week.

Charles, 76, had initially suggested in a letter delivered to Trump in the Oval Office in February by the UK prime minister that the pair could first meet in Scotland at Dumfries House or Balmoral ahead of the grand official visit. However, it would seem that scheduling challenges have taken that option off the table.

It has been said that the logistical reasons preventing the private meeting from taking place before the state visit were entirely understood and appreciated by all parties.

“His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady later this year,” a palace aide told CNN. The palace’s confirmation of the upcoming trip means that formal planning for Trump’s state visit is now underway. The exact dates have not yet been announced but September is being touted by many as most likely.

The late Queen Elizabeth II previously hosted Trump for a three-day state visit to the UK in 2019 during his first term in office.

Generally, second-term presidents are offered lunch or tea with the monarch at Windsor Castle. That was the case for Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush. But the offer of an “unprecedented” second state visit was extended on the king’s behalf by Keir Starmer during a visit to DC four months ago, which Trump enthusiastically accepted.

Depression; Types, Symptoms & Treatment

0
Depression

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a mood disorder that makes you feel constant sadness or lack of interest in life.

Most people feel sad or depressed at times. It’s a normal reaction to loss or life’s challenges. But when intense sadness — including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless — lasts for many days to weeks and keeps you from living your life, it may be something more than sadness. You could have clinical depression, a treatable medical condition.

Is Depression Curable?

There’s no cure for depression. Your symptoms may go away over time, but the condition won’t.

But with care and treatment, you can reach remission and enjoy a long, healthy life.

Depression Symptoms

According to the DSM-5, a manual doctors use to diagnose mental disorders, you have depression when you have five or more of these symptoms for at least 2 weeks:

  • Your mood is depressed for most of the day, especially in the morning.
  • You feel tired or have a lack of energy almost every day.
  • You feel worthless or guilty almost every day.
  • You feel hopeless or pessimistic.
  • You have a hard time focusing, remembering details, and making decisions.
  • You can’t sleep, or you sleep too much, almost every day.
  • You have almost no interest or pleasure in many activities nearly every day.
  • You think often about death or suicide (not just a fear of death).
  • You feel restless or slowed down.
  • You’ve lost or gained weight.

You may also:

  • Feel cranky and restless
  • Lose pleasure in life
  • Overeat or stop feeling hungry
  • Have aches, pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that don’t go away or get better with treatment
  • Have sad, anxious, or “empty” feelings

While these symptoms are common, not everyone with depression will have the same ones. How severe they are, how often they happen, and how long they last can vary.

Your symptoms may also happen in patterns. For example, depression may come with a change in seasons (a condition formerly called seasonal affective disorder).

It’s not uncommon for people with depression to have physical signs of the condition. They may include joint pain, back pain, digestive problems, sleep trouble, and appetite changes. You might have slowed speech and movements, too. The reason is that brain chemicals linked to depression, specifically serotonin and norepinephrine, play a role in both mood and pain.

Depression Causes

Doctors haven’t pinpointed exact causes for depression. They think it may be a combination of things, including:

  • Brain structure. People with depression seem to have physical differences in their brains from people who don’t have depression.
  • Brain chemistry. Chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters play a part in your mood. When you have depression, it could be because these chemicals aren’t working the way they should.
  • Hormones. Your hormone levels change because of pregnancy, postpartum issues, thyroid problems, menopause, or other reasons. That can set off depression symptoms.
  • Genetics. Researchers haven’t yet found the genes that might be responsible for depression, but you’re more likely to have depression if someone you’re related to has it.

Types of Depression

There are a few types of depressive disorders that doctors can diagnose, including:

  • Unipolar major depression
  • Persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia, when depression lasts for at least 2 years
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, when children and teens get very cranky, angry, and often have intense outbursts that are more severe than a child’s typical reaction
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, when a woman has severe mood problems before her period, more intense than typical premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Substance-induced mood disorder (SIMD), when symptoms happen while you’re taking a drug or drinking alcohol or after you stop
  • Depressive disorder due to another medical condition
  • Other depressive disorders, such as minor depression

Depression Treatment

If you or someone you know has symptoms of the condition, talk to your doctor. They can evaluate you and offer you treatment or refer you to a mental health professional.

The type of treatment your doctor recommends will depend on your symptoms and how severe they are.
