Dormaahene proposes monthly stipend for Assembly Members

0
Osagyefo Oseadeyo Dr. Agyeman Badu II

The Paramount Chief of Dormaa Traditional Area in the Bono region, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Dr. Agyeman Badu II, has proposed payment of stipends to Assembly Members representing the people at the local level.

Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu, who is the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, believes it is time the government considered paying assembly members across the country to enable them to serve the people better.

“I’m appealing to President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia whom we have entrusted our resources to consider such a worthy call. I’ll take it upon myself and write to the presidency for our Assembly Members who do a chunk of work at the local level to be paid,” he said.

He was speaking to his people recently at one of his usual community clean up exercises, where he made this proposal.

Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu, also a High Court Judge, urged lawmakers to make laws to that effect. “It is time for Assembly Members to also receive salaries as Members of Parliament (MPs),” Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu stressed.

In a related development, a member of the Tain District Assembly, Sampson Mensah Akrosmah has made an urgent appeal to relevant state institutions to consider Nkoraman Senior High School (SHS) in the next batch of allocation of vehicles to SHSs.

The Assembly member for the Abourso/Adantase Electoral Area who is a teacher at the school told Sunyani based Ark FM that the School spends so much annually to put its rickety 30-seater bus on the road.

According to the tutor, the school is finding it increasingly difficult to cope without reliable means of transport for smooth administration, teaching and learning as well as out of campus academic programmes.

Mr Akrosmah further explained that “due to the rural setting of the school, the deplorable nature of the road makes a reliable means of transport a major challenge.”He, therefore, appealed to individuals and philanthropists especially past students both home and abroad to come to the aid of the school.

The Nkoranman Senior High was founded by Mr Asiedu Nketiah on November 4, 1989, in fulfillment of a promise he made when he became the first assembly member for the Abourso Adantase Electoral Area of Seikwa with a student population of 85. It was made up of 71 boys and 14 girls. The school currently has a population of 2,300 students with limited accommodation for students, teachers and non-teaching staff.

Newmont Ghana trains 24 illegal miners in alternative livelihood

Ahafo Regional Minister,Mr. George Boakye, commends Newmont for combating galamsay

Newmont Ghana has earmarked 300,000 dollars to train selected illegal miners under its Artisanal Small-scale Mining (ASM) alternative livelihood training programme. The implementation of the programme comes on the back of a series of discussions between Newmont Ghana and stakeholders after an Artisanal small-scale Mining (ASM) baseline and impact assessment study indicated most of the illegal miners want to opt-out if they have a different employment avenue to earn a living.

The pilot programme is, therefore, aimed at providing the trainees with a meaningful, decent and viable alternative to illegal mining (Galamsey). The 24 pioneer trainees, including four females, would be trained in welding and fabrication for three months by an internationally certified training institution – CPI in Tema.

Adiki Ayitivie, Vice President of Newmont Ghana for Sustainability and External Relations, addressing the trainees

The trainees, selected from nine communities including, Adrobaa, Afrisipa, Terchire, Susuanso, Wamahinso, Gyedu, Ntortroso, and Kenyasi 1 and 2, would also be supported with a monthly stipend for the training.

“This training initiative is targeted at only community members engaged in the ASM value chain within the Ahafo concessions and does not guarantee automatic employment with Newmont”, Madam Adiki Ayitivie, the Vice President of Newmont Ghana for Sustainability and External Relations, said at the launch of the training program at Kenyasi in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

According to Madam Ayitivie, the trainees would have the opportunities to do industrial training for three months. “The trainees would do a three-month industrial and we hope that they would get opportunities to work with companies who do welding and fabrication”, she said.

Newmont Ghana is also talking to its contractors to see those who can engage the trainees.“If this doesn’t work, we would talk to the local government officials to think about setting up an industrial park, equipping them so that they can create their work while looking for other people to support them”, Madam Ayitivie said.

“Once the pilot program is successful, we would make it a regional program that will extend to the Akyem mining host communities”, she added.

LOCAL ECONOMIC DIVERSIFICATION SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Newmont Ghana is already running a programme called Local Economic Diversification Support Program, where the company is integrating the youths and the illegal miners into the Agri-business project (ABP).

Madam Ayitivie said the continuous collaboration with the local government authorities would ensure a sustainable alternative livelihood to ensure that the youth do not return to illegal mining activities.

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr George Boakye, commended Newmont Ghana for the initiative to fight the galamsey. He advised the trainees to make the most out of the lifetime opportunity offered to equip them with employable skills.“I urge you to be serious with your training because with such skill sets, you can make meaningful contributions to the development of the district and the country”, the minister said.

TVET

According to the minister, as part of the government’s quest to improve technical and vocational skills in the country, Technical and Vocational Education and Training TVET has been included in the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

He said the government will soon begin the construction of technical institutes in the country to boost technical education in the country.Mr Yaw Boakye indicated that TVET is the best vehicle the government has devised to produce an educated and skilled workforce in the country.

The Chief of Kenyasi No. 1 Barima Osei Kofi Abri II, was optimistic that the programme would provide a good option for illegal miners to work and support themselves and their families.

He, therefore, urged Newmont Ghana to assist the trainees to secure jobs after the training or support them with capital for them to establish themselves. He advised the trainees to take advantage of the opportunity given them.

Ghana wins most peaceful country in West Africa prize for 3 consecutive times

Mr. Ambrose Dery, Minister for the Interior
Mr Ambrose Dery cutting the tape to commission the projects

The Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, has stated with great pride that Ghana has been voted the most peaceful country in the West African sub-region for three consecutive times.

He has attributed the feat to the collective efforts of the security agencies and the good people of Ghana. “Each and every citizen can claim part of this achievement,” he said.

Ambrose Dery was speaking at Wa where he commissioned two-bedroom houses at Kpaguri Estate for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) recently.

“As I talk to you, we do know what is happening in the Sub-region – in Burkina Faso – and so we expect officers of the immigration to be up and doing in their jobs. We allow them in, but we want to make sure that people who come in are not on the blacklist. Therefore, they do not have a criminal record, and you are in the various communities to monitor that when foreigners come into your community, you should know where they live,” he said.

The Interior Minister subsequently appealed to landlords, and proprietors of businesses, hotels and all those residential accommodation providers that they have a duty to let Ghana Immigration Service know those foreigners.

“We welcome foreigners who come in, but we want to make sure that those elements among them to make Ghana unstable are dealt with,” he said.

On checks conducted by GIS on some selected routes, Dery acknowledged that he has also received complaint that people who are travelling over long distances say they are delayed unnecessarily by the officers of the GIS.

He told the function: “I want to appeal to both sects that generally citizenry do not understand the role Immigration Officers are playing. They might delay you on a journey, but is better they delay you and we continue to live in peace than they rush over their job and Ghana sinks into chaos, war and conflict situation.”

He,however, admonished GIS officers to be more professional when they are conducting search on commuters, adding that they should be snappy, “but in all respect, do explain what you are doing.”

The Comptroller General of GIS, Kwame Asuah Takyi on his part told the gathering that to tighten security across the country, his outfit has created 87 additional commands to tighten controls on illegal migration.

Asuah Takyi said, “Management of the Service has begun to mount inland check point at strategic locations along major border routes to serve as second level of checks to intercept all undocumented migrants who may have entered the country through unapproved routes.”

This strategy, according to him, would help to control influx of migrants into the country especially with the reopening of the borders of the country by the President of the Republic. He mentioned that as part of GIS strategy of expanding its mandate, it has created regional command for Kasoa emphasising that, the Kasoa sector Command now becomes the Central-East Regional Command.

This new Regional Command, according to the Comptroller of GIS, has a lot of undocumented migrants living and working in the region, and it will help to bring immigration enforcement to the door steps of the citizens.

In view of the above, Kwame Asuah Takyi called on all members of the public to support the security agencies by providing the needed information of suspicious characters and movements within their communities to the security agencies for immediate action to be taken.

Cocoa production in Western North reduces from 400,000 to 150,000 metric tonnes

0
Dr Kwaku Afriyie, Minister , Environment, Science , Technology and Innovations.

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Dr Kwaku Afriyie, has noted with concern how cocoa production in the Western North region has whittled down from 400,000–150,000 metric tonnes due to climate change.

Dr Afriyie who was speaking at a news conference in Accra yesterday bemoaned the toll climate change is having on Ghana’s environment and the need for the country to marshal its resources to fight it.

According to the Minister, Western North region used to be Ghana’s number one cocoa producing region contributing a third of total cocoa production.

The Minister who is also from the same region regretted that the cocoa producing belt has now moved southward and indicated that the region is now suitable for the growing of cashew nuts.

“A lot of you know that the Western North-Bia East and Bia West are the epicenter of cocoa production; not anymore. The cocoa belt is moving southward…Climate change is real and Ghana is paying the price for it.”

He was quick to add that indeed, Ghana produced one of the highest tonnages of cocoa two years ago, but that did not come from the Western North region. He said it was mostly from the Western South and Ashanti regions.

He stated that there are other factors contributing to this shift, but the major one is climate change.

He, however, noted that all hope was not lost as his ministry is working assiduously under an ‘Adaptation Fund Project (AFP)’ to curb the canker. One of the measures, Dr Afriyie mentioned under the AFP, was Carbon Financing.

He said the strategy is to mobilize finance from the carbon market and noted that the government had succeeded in forming cooperation with Switzerland, Sweden and Singapore to work with businesses to invest in climate actions in Ghana and exchange the resultant carbon credits for financial payments.

He also noted that under the Ghana-Swiss Cooperation, MESTI was facilitating the development of six carbon market projects involving private businesses in Ghana and Switzerland and mentioned some of these businesses as improved cook stoves, rooftop solar pvs, biomass briquette and others.

The Minister also indicated that his ministry was engaged with several international private sector entities that have expressed interest to develop and invest in carbon market projects in Ghana.

Minister Afriyie also used yesterday’s presser to address journalist on measures being put in place to tackle plastic waste.

According to him, the Ministry was currently looking at plastics as a resource and moving away from the linear way of production, where things are used once and discarded to a closed loop system or a circular economy system where products, right from the onset are designed to ensure circularity.

“The Ministry is engaging the private sector companies who are into the recycling of plastics to determine their capacities in terms of infrastructure and the appropriate financial models required for the sustainable management of plastics,” he added.

He again said that “The Ministry is promoting the preventive approach to plastics management to complement the current system of Incentive based.”

GJA cries over Ghana’s drop in Press Freedom index

Mr. Affail Monney, GJA president addressing the gathering
Dignitaries present at the gathering

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Roland Affail Monney has lamented over Ghana’s drop from 30th to 60th position in the World Press Freedom ranking. He made this known yesterday at the World Press Freedom celebration, under the theme: “Journalism under digital siege,” in Accra.

According to Mr Affail Monney, the drop in ranking had been anticipated due to a confluence of anti-media factors. He added that, “never did we expect the drop to be so precipitous- from 3rd in Africa to 10th, and 30th in the world to 60th – a 100 per cent decline.”

The GJA president bemoaned that the attacks and disregard for the rights of a number of journalists in the line of duty is the determined the outcome of the safety of journalists.

“Death threats rained on investigative journalists also went uninvestigated, let alone punished, while law enforcement officers who were supposed to protect journalists rather brutalised them,” he added.

He disclosed that, “the Global Press Freedom report does not spell perpetual doom and gloom, neither does it sentence Ghana to an irreversible situation. It still recognises Ghana as a regional pillar of democratic stability.”

The deputy Information Minister, Madam Fatimatu Abubakar also disclosed in her address that the work of the journalist gives voice to the voiceless, exposes injustice and holds leaders accountable in all spheres.

She, however, observed that misinformation and disinformation has become widespread with many actors spooning false narrative and inaccuracies.

Multiple digital or online information sharing and social media platforms have created an environment where direct attacks are heaped on individual freedom of speech, according to the minister.

The deputy minister again disclosed that government was putting necessary steps in place, including taking inputs from technocrats and industry experts to facilitate the passage of the Broadcasting Bill.

The Broadcasting Bill, when passed into law, will help regulators in Ghana’s media space to deal with the issue of spiritualists, money doublers and fraudsters who advertise their activities on television.

The Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, urged journalists to discharge their responsibilities in the right way it has to be discharged so that journalists could be described as credible.

He noted that regardless of the fact that the constitution states that free speech should not be criminalized, individuals who abuse free speech must not be left to go scot free.

He further added that, the rule of law must be applied in dealing with individuals who abuse free speech and not rather resort to the use of physical force.

Also, he noted that credibility is in the heart of journalists and as such there is the need for journalists to produce credible information when they report their stories.

He further added that journalists should make themselves useful in the society with emphasis on the fact that even though there is the presence of digitalization, journalists should not work under the influence of digitalization.

US Comedian Dave Chappelle attacked on stage in Los Angeles

Dave Chappelle

US stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage on Tuesday May 3 during a performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

In a viral video on social media, someone is seen running into the star.

Further videos appeared to show the comic apparently unharmed after returning to the stage at the Netflix ‘Is A Joke Festival.’

Chappelle faced criticism and protests last year when his Netflix special was accused of being transphobic.

After returning to the stage on Tuesday, the 48-year-old made light of the controversy, suggesting to the audience that the attacker “was a trans man”.

“I thought for a moment OK, is this a prank? Because they had made some Will Smith jokes. Even though Chris Rock was there, Dave was making some jokes, it was fair game, right?”

In one video, Chappelle could be seen thanking his famous friends for helping out, saying: “Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat.”

“I thought that was part of the show,” Foxx responded.

Chappelle joked: “I’ve been doing this 35-years. I just stomped a [person] backstage. I’ve always wanted to do that.”

Jackie Appiah

Screen goddess, Jackie Appiah has revealed that she has made a vow never to endorse an alcoholic brand or betting company.

Even though endorsement deals are one of the main sources of income for celebrities in Ghana, with huge sums of money for the ambassadors, according to Jackie Appiah, she is not excited about it if it is an alcoholic brand or a betting company. In the case of Jackie Appiah, her reasons for taking the entrenched position of not to sign such deal no matter how juicy it is, is personal.

In an interview on ‘Hammer Time’ which was monitored by The Chronicle, Miss Appiah mentioned that she is careful about endorsement deals.

In order to endorse any product, Miss Appiah indicated that she does product evaluation before signing as ambassador.

Known to be the brand ambassador for more than ten products in Ghana, Jackie Appiah intimated that; “I test the products myself and also give to others to also try before I agree to promote it. I care about the users than the money.”
