Food Poisoning: FDA closes down Marwarko East Legon Branch

0
Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive, Food and Drugs Authority,

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has closed the East Legon branch of Marwarko Restaurant over suspected food poisoning.A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday said the closure was necessitated by complaints from the public and that investigations had started with the relevant agencies.

The FDA assured the public that the issue would be thoroughly investigated, and appropriate actions taken. It said the Authority was ensuring the strict implementation of protocols to prevent any further harm to the public.

Food poisoning also known as food-borne illness, is the result of eating contaminated, spoiled, or toxic food. The most common symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, mild fever, diarrhea, and headache. The length of time it takes for symptoms to appear depends on the source of the infection, but it could range from as little as 30 minutes to as long as eight weeks.

Most food poisoning could be traced to one of three major causes: bacteria, parasites, or viruses, which could be found on almost all the food humans consume. However, heat from cooking usually kills pathogens in food before it reaches the consumer’s plate.Foods eaten raw are common sources of food poisoning because they don’t go through the cooking process. Foods that are mostly contaminated include meat, eggs, and dairy products.

Water in some cases may also be contaminated with organisms that cause illness. Occasionally, food would come in contact with the organisms in fecal matter or vomit. This is most likely to occur when an ill person prepares food and do not wash the hands before cooking.

IGP urged to ensure effective use of Case Tracking System

Philip Duah addressing the participants

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been called upon to ensure that the Case Tracking System (CTS) introduced in the country in 2018 by the government with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and being used in police stations across the country is given the needed boost to ensure speedy trial of cases.

Mr. Philip Duah, Executive Director of ABAK Foundation, stated this at a Town Hall Meeting at Brahabebome, a suburb of Obuasi, where the participants were sensitised on the workings of the CTS by ABAK and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).

Mr. Duah noted that currently the CTS was not being put to good use, and urged the IGP to retool his personnel to effectively make use of the gadget to assist the police, suspects and whoever patronises the police station.

He emphasised that most Ghanaians did not know the existence of such a device, and asked the participants at the sensitisation programme to educate themselves so that they would ask questions about the CTS whenever they found themselves at any police station.

Roger John Yendaw explaining a point to the audience

“If the CTS is effectively used, there wouldn’t be a situation where a complainant in a case would be told that the docket cannot be traced, because the officer handling the case is on transfer; in such a situation, the CTS would have captured the information on the case long before the transfer of the officer was effected, and thus makes it easy to retrieve the said information,” Mr. Duah added.

Mr. Roger John Yendaw, Legal Aid Officer, Obuasi, said the CTS was a very useful gadget, and explained that it would signal the relevant agencies as to when a case was to be heard in court.

He also told the expectant crowd that in granting bail to a suspect at the police station does not call for the payment of any money.

Some participants acknowledged that they had learnt useful lessons from the interactions that went on at the town hall meeting. Others said they learnt how various cases should be sent to CHRAJ for interpretation and adjudication.

Fetish Priest shoots himself after killing wife, son

Gunfire

A 40-year-old self-styled Fetish Priest, Kwesi Tandoh, is said to have shot himself after allegedly gunning down his wife, Abena Nyamekye, and one of their four children.

According to reliable sources, Tandoh allegedly shot the wife and his son at 22:30 hours GMT following an altercation which ensued between them on Wednesday 11th May.

Another source disclosed that Tandoh mostly threatened the wife with death anytime there was any form of disagreement between them, but nothing substantial was done to deter him.

It has been rumoured that the loud silence on his constant threats emboldened him to carry out his evil action on Wednesday night when he allegedly locked up his family and shot his wife and son before turning the gun on himself.

According to an official statement by the Regional Police Command issued by the Spokesperson, DSP Irene Serwaa Oppong, a distress call was placed to the Ajumako District Police Command from Enyan Abowinnum.

She said: “When [the] police arrived at the scene, suspect Kwesi Tandoh, aged 40, had locked their house and waiting with a gun for anyone who will try to rescue any of his family members.”

According to DSP Oppong, the suspect, who was met firing sporadically from his room, allegedly killed himself later.

She explained: “The room was broken into by [the] police, but found the wife struggling for survival.”

She indicated that the wife was quickly rushed to the Ajumako District Hospital, but died later while receiving treatment.

“One of their children, Richmond Tandoh, aged 14, and the father were found in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds in their heads and chest,” the police said.

They were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, and their bodies have been conveyed to Our Lady of Grace Hospital Mortuary, Breman Asikuma, for preservation and autopsy.

Three of the children survived

The other three remaining children are 5, 9, and 17 years survived their father’s deadly onslaught, because they hid safely in the room.

Exhibit found

According to the police, a single barrel shotgun, one locally manufactured pistol, a cutlass and weedicide were found in the room.

Support for the traumatised children.

The Command, in collaboration with the Regional Social Welfare Office, has sent the three children to a shelter, while the Guidance and Counseling Unit of the University of Cape Coast is giving them psychological support.

EDITORIAL: Can Ghana really win the galamsey fight?

On Monday May 9, 2022 this paper carried a story about four Chinese illegal immigrants who have been arrested for trespassing on a 40-acre land to engage in illegal mining. They were made to pay a sum of GH¢16 million for the damage they caused on the land.

It should come as good news that they have been nabbed and are being made to face the law, but The Chronicle is not the least happy. We are rather disgusted at how our own people, who have been tasked to protect the country’s resources, are rather aiding foreigners to come and commit all sorts of crimes and injustices.

Our revulsion stems from the fact that in our May 9 story, it was disclosed that these illegal miners are also illegal immigrants. It is trite knowledge that the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is the body responsible for issuing resident permits to foreigners who want to stay in the country. It beats our imagination as to how the GIS will sit idle and allow foreigners to illegally come into the country and muster the effrontery to engage in illegal mining.

Again, it is also a known fact that government and our traditional rulers are the custodians of our land and no one can get access to them without the permit of any of these bodies. In the case of the four Chinese illegal immigrants, we are told that they engaged in illegal mining on the land without permission from the rightful owners. But how is it possible for foreigners to move excavators into an area, build temporary offices structures and mine on the land without local collaborators?

We have all seen the investments governments have made and continue to make to curb illegal mining. From Operation Vanguard, which consisted of 200 military and 200 police personnel charged with the mandate of seizing and burning of equipment belonging to illegal mining operators and the forced closure of mines without official documents, and next to Operation Halt which consisted of only the military, who were given the responsibility of removing all persons and logistics involved in mining from water bodies, one cannot deny the fact that government has not done its part in the fight against galamsey.

There was also the establishment of Galamstop, a taskforce charged to patrol some river bodies to ensure that people do not mine in water bodies. The Chronicle does not think that all these personnel worked for free as government had to pay motivational allowances to the gallant taskforce men and women, providing food, water, accommodation and working tools all from our taxes.

The four Chinese illegal immigrants entered into the country without illegally and have destroyed our land and water bodies. If the GIS had performed its duty well, these Chinese illegal immigrants would not have entered the country in the first place and even if they did not get the support of local collaborators, they would not have been able to locate these lands, talk less mine on them.

From the above it is clear that government is trying its best to bring the illegal mining menace to its barest minimum. The onus now lies on us the citizens to ensure that all these investments do not go to waste.  If we do not put our love for money aside and act as citizens and not spectators, the government can establish a countless number of taskforces but it will just be like pouring water in a basket. The time to act is now!

Letter to Senior Opupulepu (185) When A Prophet Prophesizes, Man Say Bueiii and Chiaaaa

0
Opinion

Dear Senior Opupulepu,

How are you do? As for me and my shordies we are all do fine.

Senior, there is an adage that goes like this, ‘man proposes, woman refuses, sorry Yahweh disposes.’

Senior, the meaning of this adage can be summarised to mean that, we mere mortals can make any plans we like and want, but it is only Yahweh that would decide the success or otherwise of our plans.

Senior, due to this complex nature of Yahweh, humankind always want to hear good news from the lips of prophets, who are Nyame-Komfo Nipa for short.

Senior, in fact any prophet at all, whether natural or artificial, potent or expired, true or false, it does not matter. So long as he comes out to say something that will sweet the ears,he is considered a true prophet.

Senior, that is why politricksters, who wants to genuinely of falsely lie to the people, and here, any lie be lie, will first visit any prophet of a shrine nearby, with myrrh, frankincense and gold; barrels of fresh palm wine, sheep, goats, fowls, bags of maize, millet, sorghum, beans and rice, with itemized foodstuffs, bales of customised obroniwawu, charcoal, firewood, drums of stream water, chamber pots and Ghana-Must-Go suitcases full of cowries.

Senior, ask what palm wine doing at a Pray-for-Me man of Yahweh’s palace? Please, know that when palm wine is fresh and sweet, and drunk in moderation, one’s head will not turn round like a vehicle in a roundabout.

Senior, the politrickster will then lie flat on the bare ground and will never lift his eyes as he adores the prophet who probably had just return from lunch in Heaven. He will then greet the man of Yahweh and ask permission to sit on a kitchen stool, which will be granted.

Senior, the politrickster will then seek the Holy Face of Yahweh in that ugly, godforsaken face of this prophet as if his face is a telescope through which he can see Yahweh sitting on His Throne in Heaven.

Senior, he will then ask what the oracles say concerning his intention to become a Municipal Police or the next Omanhene of the village.

Senior, with gifts given him and that surely solving his problems, considering he must feed his house and his concubines, the prophet will prophesy what the politrickster wants to hear. After all he does not intend to disturb Yahweh with this minor request since he believes he can handle things himself.

Senior, the Nyame-Komfo Nipa, will then go into tongues and speak in languages which he just made up and does not understand what exactly he himself is saying.

Senior, he will then clear his throat and while his mind is wondering how many cowries are in the Ghana-Must-Go, and thanking Yahweh for these gifts from such a lunatic, lost and confused creature who Yahweh might even regret creating him in His Image and Likeness; the prophet will be glad that he now has enough resources to win over that beautiful chorister who some of the akupas have set eyes on and giving him stiff competition, instead of memorising bible verses.

Senior, this prophet will clear his throat again and proclaim that while he was praying, Yahweh lifted him to a barrier post in Heaven and he was made to behold the star of the politricker which was shining brighter than all stars in Heaven, put together. There again, he saw the politricker, who even though he hasn’t bath for forty straight days and night, cladded in white fugu and in white djokoto and in white Charlie-wote, with calabash on his head as a crown and a tall walking stick in his left hand. He was being ushered by trainee angels unto a white and shinning kitchen stool. This signified that the politrickster could go and sleep and stop campaigning because he was already won. His name has been boldly written in the books of Heaven and duly registered as the in-coming Municipal Police or Omanhene of Ogyakrom.

Senior, this is what all politricksters will want to hear. However, what if a prophet who was duly commissioned by Yahweh to speak on His behalf, comes out to say the unpleasant truth?

Senior, a certain high priest of the Methodology Congregation, by name Stephen of Lake Bosumtwi, was swimming half naked in the lake when Yahweh told him to go and tell our immediate past ex-Omanhene Nana Obianyeobia Onaapowura, that his nonsense talks about cancelling the newtithe called Everlasting-Level or E-Level, had shut the gates of palace to him and he will never become omanhene right to the thousandth generation in his lineage.

Senior, why should Yahweh get angry about someone’s intention to cancel the E-Level, as soon as he becomes omanhene again? You see, Yahweh is an Everlasting God and He loves anything everlasting therefore this newly introduced tithe is dear to His Heart. Who born dog to cancel it?

Senior, the obedient prophet called Stephen of Lake Bosomtwi proclaimed in the village square exactly as he was told. Suddenly the Umbrella clan who believes in prophets are against this man of Yahweh as in the days of Ezekiel and Jeremiah. They even say he did not complete Free SHS and he is talking like that. How they are insulting him clearly shows that only things that sweeten their ears are things to be taken as true words from Yahweh.

Senior, hmmm, like I said, man proposes, woman refuses, sorry Yahweh disposes. As for me I am Dan, sorry I am Done.

It’s Me!

Koforidua court acquits & discharges QNET representatives

1
Counsel for the accused, Derek Yeboah Gyamfi Esq,

The Koforidua Circuit Court, on April 28, 2022, discharged all the accused persons brought before it for allegedly defrauding by false pretences under Section 131 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29) of 1960, in a case involving QNET Independent Representatives.

QNET is a global e-commerce direct selling company that provides customers around the world with unique high-quality products and services, while giving them the opportunity to build a sales business by promoting these products.

The court, which was presided over by Her Ladyship Justice Marian Offoh Polley discharged all the accused persons after the prosecution, led by a State Attorney, Nana Gyankoma Djaba Mensah, informed the court that pursuant to further and thorough investigations, no case was found against them, leading to a full discharge by the court.

Some 15 representatives of QNET Company were remanded into police custody on Tuesday, October 19 last year, after the police charged them for defrauding under false pretenses.

The news of their arrests generated publicity on various news portals, since over 400 persons were “paraded” by the police for allegedly having engaged in wrongful acts in Koforidua as independent representatives of QNET.

Justice served

Further to the discharge, Counsel for the accused, Derek Yeboah Gyamfi Esq, had told the media earlier this week that he was pleased that justice was served. He stated that freedom of assembly, association, and right to work among other issues were the fundamental human rights of every Ghanaian, enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana.

To this end, he called on all to seek clarity on the activities undertaken by people, instead of branding them as engaging in wrongful activities without a scintilla of proof.

Mr. Yeboah Fofie, a Consultant of QNET to the Ghana region, indicated that QNET was an international direct selling company that delta in direct sales of various products and services via their independent representatives (IRs), who were paid accordingly on sales undertaken.

“The company is not a recruitment agency, investment company, nor a deposit-taking organisation, or engaged in anything untoward,” he said, and advised people to ask the necessary questions when they visit any of the offices dotted around the country.

Bono Regional House of Chiefs appreciates work on Sunyani Airport

Okokyeredom Sakyi Ako II(r) receiving briefing from the airport manager
The Sunyani airport runway

The Paramount Chief of Drobo Traditional Area in the Jaman South Municipality and Vice President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Okokyeredom Sakyi Ako II, has suggested to the contractors working on the Sunyani Airport project to include a restaurant and an enhanced lightening system from the airport junction to the airport itself.

“I would like to suggest if the project could be expanded to include a restaurant for travelers, and also enhance the lightening system from the airport junction on the main Sunyani-Odumase road to the airport, as part of the phase two project if it was not in the initial project plan,” he said.

On behalf of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs (BRHCs), he commended the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the management of the Sunyani Airport for the level of work done for effective and safe operationalisation of the airport.

Okokyeredom Ako II made the suggestion and commendation when he visited the airport to inspect the level of progress of the ongoing redevelopment project.

Okokyeredom Ako II observed that the completed asphalt, markings and grooving recommended by the safety officials of the GACL for improved safety is highly commendable. “The House of Chiefs is impressed with the level of work done so far, and we commend managers of the project,” he said.

“We are happy and satisfied with the progress of work, and I can say, very soon we will be flying from here,” he added.

GROOVING

The Manager of the airport, Mr. Maxwell Yeboah, said the facility would have been operational by now, but there was further recommendation by safety officials for grooving the completed runway for additional safety measure and modernisation purpose.

Grooving works by cutting grooves into the asphalt or concrete with diamond blades to create channels in the surface for the rain to escape into, thereby stopping the water settling on the surface, which can cause skidding. The grooves on the runway act rather like the grooved tread of a vehicle tyre.

The main function of grooving is to provide an escape route under the aircraft tyre for water on the runway to reduce or eliminate Dynamic Hydroplaning.  Dynamic Hydroplaning, typically just referred to as hydroplaning, occurs when a tire in motion encounters more water than it can dissipate either through the tire treads or by pushing or shoving the water out of the way.

The conditions under which hydroplaning occurs are contingent on several factors, primarily speed and the fluid layer thickness as well as tire tread pattern and depth, tire pressure and runway texture. Hydroplaning can result in significantly longer aircraft stopping distance, greater sensitivity to cross winds, potential loss of directional control and a complete dependence on reverse thrust to stop. Grooving is so effective that in the presence of water, totally worn aircraft tires experience better braking on grooved pavement than newly treaded tires on non-grooved pavement.

In addition to greatly reducing or eliminating hydroplaning, grooving also has the benefit of reducing stopping distances on dry pavement through a process called tire tread interlock. Grooving also helps eliminate standing water on the runway and facilitates runway drainage, which also helps to disrupt ice formation.

Mr. Yeboah explained though the grooving-cutting lines on the runway for gradual reduction of speed limit of aircrafts is yet to be completed, the airport could be operating effectively while it was being done.

He said the “management and other stakeholders are therefore working towards a date to resume commercial flights before phase two of the rehabilitation work would begin” and added that the 1,500 metre-stretch of the runway has been completed and extension would be done during the phase two to make it 1900 metres.

EFCC probes APC, PDP for suspected money laundering

0
EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for suspected money laundering through their accounts in two banks in Abuja.

It is not clear whether the investigation is connected to the ongoing nomination exercises of the parties that have seen high volumes of money moving into the accounts of the parties.

As parties prepare for their primaries for the selection of candidates for the 2023 General Election, thousands of aspirants in the two parties have bought their expression of interest and nomination forms for various offices.

The exercises have generated several billions of naira for the nation’s two major parties with about 28 presidential aspirants paying N100 million each for the APC forms as of Wednesday, while 17 of their counterparts in the PDP obtained the forms for N40 million each.

On Monday, the Head of Operations at the headquarters of the EFCC, Michael Wetkas, wrote a letter informing the managing directors of Access Bank and Polaris Bank in Abuja that the commission was investigating 14 accounts of the two parties, and another organisation believed to be connected to the PDP.

According to the letters, the investigation involves three accounts in Access Bank belonging to the APC, (0692988080, 0035644896 and 0044183689), one to the National Secretariat of the PDP (0054586830), and three to Umbrella Trust Ltd (0076600091, 0066988655, 0068595990 and 0054586830).
