Bechem United reached their second MTN Ghana FA Cup final on Sunday, 15 May 2022, after posting Aduana Stars 2-0 at the Golden City Park in Berekum.

The Hunters scored the pair of goals in the first half to set up a meeting with defending champions Hearts of Oak who pipped Dreams FC 3-2 on Saturday.

Striker Emmanuel Avornyo shot Kassim Mingle’s side into the lead on 16 minutes.

The no.7 shirted struck a low grounder from outside the area which went through the legs of an Aduana defender and slipped past goalkeeper Joseph Addo.

After 25 minutes, Bechem doubled their advantage when in-form Augustine Okrah let fly a free-kick which parried by Addo, the Aduana goalie, but came off the inside of the cross bar and bounce over the goal line.

Aduana, who went into the match as favourites, were kept at bay by an improved Bechem backline marshalled by Samuel Osei Kuffour.

Bechem are now on course to win their second FA Cup trophy after a 2-1 win over second-tier side Okwahu United at Cape Coast Stadium in 2016.

The final of the 2022 FA Cup will be played at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Hearts beat Dreams

Hearts of Oak have reached the finals of the MTN FA Cup for the second successive season after beating Dreams FC in the semi-finals in Accra.

The FA Cup holders beat a stubborn Dreams 3-2 to keep their dreams of retaining the title they won last season.

Dreams FC got off to a great start after breaking the deadlock just four minutes into the game through Sylvester Simba. But the Phobians pulled parity seven minutes later through forward Benjamin Yorke.

Both sides held on to go into the break at 1-1, but it was the defending champions who will take the lead after the break. Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored to give Hearts the advantage.

Dreams FC were reduced to ten men after Ibrahim Issah recklessly lunged into defender Mohammed Alhassan.

Hearts of Oak took advantage to extend their lead through Seidu Suraj but a late fight from the Dawu-based outfit saw them get a consolation through Karikari.

PSG in first win after three frustrating draws

Mbappe (right) celebrates with Lionel Messi

The post-Champions League knockout months are always a strange time at Paris Saint Germain.

With key players and the manager all expected to depart this summer, including two of the goal scorers here, this season has been no different. A run of three draws prior to their trip to Montpellier had really given the impression that this season had become a procession for this group. In the picturesque town of Montpellier, however, the players did give the extremely discontented PSG supporters something to sing about a game away from the summer break.

Two goals from Lionel Messi set PSG on their way to an easy victory. PSG have blown two goal leads in their previous two games, but here Angel Di Maria’s effort after 26 minutes assured there was no danger of another advantage being squandered.

Kylian Mbappe’s penalty on the hour mark, a well-taken effort considering how long he was forced to wait, confirmed PSG of their first win after three frustrating draws.

Lewandowski clapped the travelling fans after the game

Robert Lewandowski has admitted that he may have played his final game for Bayern Munich.

The 33-year-old started and scored in his side’s 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg on Saturday, taking his tally to 344 goals in 374 appearance for Bayern. Following the game, he revealed that he had told the German champions he will not be signing a new deal, opening up the possibility that he departs the Allianz Arena this summer.

‘I can confirm that I spoke with Hasan (Salihamidžić) and informed him that my decision had been made and I would not be extending my contract with FC Bayern,’ Lewandowski told reporters. ‘It’s very possible that this was my last game for Bayern. I cannot say that at 100%, but it may have been [my last game].

‘We want to find the best solution for me and for the club’.

Lewandowski waved to the travelling fans after the draw at Wolfsburg, seemingly offering a further sign that his time at Bayern has come to an end.

Vardy scores brace as Leicester thrash relegated Watford

Vardy celebrates after scoring

Jamie Vardy scored twice as Leicester thrashed already relegated Watford to consign them to a seventh defeat in eight Premier League games.

Joao Pedro’s close-range effort deflected off Timothy Castagne to put them in front, and they had opportunities to extend their lead with Adam Masina hitting the crossbar and Brazilian forward Pedro seeing another effort well saved by Foxes goalkeeper Danny Ward.

However, a defensive mix-up between Masina and Craig Cathcart allowed Youri Tielemans to tee-up James Maddison for the equaliser, and from there the Foxes took control.

Another misjudgement, this time from goalkeeper Ben Foster, saw Vardy beat him to the ball to head in Leicester’s second before Harvey Barnes guided Marc Albrighton’s cross into the bottom left corner 22 seconds after the break.

While Pedro twice seriously tested Ward, Watford’s dismal day saw Vardy race on to Barnes’ pass to prod the ball past Foster, before Barnes compounded their misery, sweeping a low effort past Foster into the bottom right corner late on.

City recover from 2-goal deficit to draw with West Ham

Manchester City vs West Ham

Manchester City recovered from a two-goal deficit at West Ham to keep the Premier League title race in their own hands, but a late penalty miss from Riyad Mahrez meant they missed the chance to effectively win it.

Pep Guardiola’s side went into the game knowing that four points from their two remaining games would guarantee a sixth Premier League title, but were left shocked and two down at half-time after a brilliant double from Jarrod Bowen.

Jack Grealish’s deflected volley halved the arears four minutes into the second half, before Vladimir Coufal headed a Mahrez free-kick into his own net with 20 minutes remaining.

There was more drama to come. The Blues were awarded a penalty – after Anthony Taylor consulted the VAR – when Gabriel Jesus was fouled by Craig Dawson but Mahrez saw his spot-kick pushed away by Lukasz Fabianski.

Harry Kane’s penalty see off stubborn Burnley

Kane scores a penalty against Burnley

Harry Kane’s penalty saw off a stubborn Burnley side as Tottenham moved above Arsenal into fourth place and kept the Clarets’ survival hopes in the balance. On a tense afternoon in north London with so much at stake at both ends of the table, Kane’s spot-kick in first-half stoppage time proved enough to give his side three vital points in their bid for Champions League football.

Spurs move two points clear of the Gunners and will stay above them going into the final day of the season unless their north London rivals beat Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday.

The Clarets had to survive some intense early pressure but began to find their way into the game before it swung on Tottenham’s penalty, awarded on the stroke of half-time.

Davinson Sanchez’s attempt to flick on a ball in the Burnley box saw the ball brush against Ashley Barnes’ outstretched arm.

Referee Kevin Friend did not spot the incident and Harry Kane went close to turning in a Ryan Sessegnon pull-back as play continued, before VAR intervened.

Liverpool beat Chelsea to win FA Cup

0
Liverpool lifted the FA Cup for the eighth time

Liverpool remain in the hunt for a historic quadruple after winning the FA Cup following another Wembley penalty shootout against Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp’s side repeated their Carabao Cup final victory in February, the decisive moment coming when Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson saved Mason Mount’s spot-kick, leaving Kostas Tsimikas to secure Liverpool’s second trophy of the season. The Reds are still in the Premier League title race and have the Champions League final to come against Real Madrid. Liverpool had the better of an eventful final, with the outstanding Luis Diaz and Andrew Robertson hitting the woodwork, although it may come at a price with Mohamed Salah going off injured in the first half and Virgil van Dijk going off after 90 minutes. It is a devastating blow for Chelsea and manager Thomas Tuchel to lose in this manner yet again as they had chances – with Marcos Alonso hitting the post and also being denied by Alisson – but become the first side to lose three successive FA Cup finals.

Kan Dapaah ‘Sacks’ GoTa Boys From Tema Port

0
National Security Minister, Mr Albert Kan Dapaah

The Ministry of National Security has put structures in place to contain any terrorist activities, as jihadist elements attempt to knock on the borders of the country.

Among the many restructuring efforts, all national security operatives at the Tema Port have been withdrawn to be reassigned to areas where their services would be required most.

A letter to that effect, dated April 27, 2022 and signed by the sector Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah with the heading, WITHDRAWAL OF PERSONNEL OF THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL SECURITY FROM THE TEMA PORT reads: Your office is apprised of the decision of this ministry to withdraw its operatives from the Tema Harbour, effective 3rd May, 2022.

This decision is in response to calls by the Economic Management Team for a rationalisation of the number of security agencies involved in physical inspection at the port, given the ongoing operations by the Joint Port Control Unit (JPCU) and the Revenue, Assurance, Compliance and Enforcement (RACE) team.

The withdrawal also forms part of efforts by the Ministry of National Security to enhance ongoing operations towards addressing the threat of terrorism and violent extremism, in view of the surge in activities of terrorist and violent extremist groups in neighbouring countries and the ongoing expansionist activities of same to littoral West African states.

Notwithstanding the withdrawal of personnel of this Ministry from the Tema Harbour, the Ministry of National Security shall provide the needed assistance to the relevant agencies in the conduct of surgical operation at the Tema Harbour when required.

Neighbouring Republic of Togo on Wednesday tasted its first Jihadist attack leading to the killing of eight soldiers with thirteen wounded.This has come in the wake of terrorists bombardment in Burkina Faso, bordering Ghana to the north.

After being briefed on Friday May 6, 2022 by the National Security Liaison Officer at the Tema Port, who was equally axed for the same restructuring purpose, the operatives would not agree.

On Saturday, they massed up at the frontage of the residence of the National Security Coordinator in Accra, for reasons which are unknown.

Media report monitored by The Chronicle indicate that it took a deployment of military personnel to bring a developing unhealthy situation under control.

The paper also gathered that greater number of the operatives at the Tema Port have not been sanctioned by the Security Ministry.This has led to unprofessional conducts by the operatives and so their withdrawal was hailed by the business community at the Harbour.

The Executive Secretary of the Exporters and Importers Association, Mr Sampson Asaki, who accused the operatives of duplicating the jobs of the constitutionally mandated bodies and harassments welcome the decision to withdraw and reassign them to where they can perform better.

Hosting AfDB in Accra will inure  to Ghana’s benefits- Ofori-Atta

0
Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister for Finance

On May 23-27, Ghana will host the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Accra.

The Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, has expressed delight in Ghana hosting the five-day meeting, which will bring together about 1000 delegates, including ministers for finance,governors of central banks, leaders of local and international finance and development organisations, captains of industry and civil society from all over the world.

Explaining why he is in high expectations of the meeting at a presser at the Ministry of Information in Accra yesterday, Mr Ofori-Atta said the meeting is timely because the AfDB, with its aim of advancing Africa’s social and economic transformation and integration, will help Africa discuss how it can surmount the mired economic challenges brought to it by Covid-19 and the Russia and Ukraine war.

He noted that the economies of 41 African countries are severely exposed to rising food prices, rising energy prices and tightening financial conditions. He said that food prices are 34 percent higher than this time last year and have never been this high since the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation started recording them, while crude oil prices also increased by around 60 percent.

He also observed that gas and fertilizer prices have more than doubled while global inflation rose to a decade high of 6.0 percent in February causing many central banks to signal increases in interest rates and leading to higher debt servicing costs.

Mr Ofori-Atta believed that hosting the meeting in Ghana will inure to the benefit of not Ghana alone, but Africa in general, since there will be enough time to discuss issues bothering the economies of the continent.

He again said that surmounting the challenges require collective and coordinated action at the regional level and was hopeful that the meeting will help countries form the needed collaborations.

“This ‘toxic mix’ of challenges persists even as the Continent recovers from the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The spread and scope of these challenges require collective and coordinated action at the regional level if Africa is to overcome them.”

Another reason Mr Ofori-Atta gave for his enthusiasm for the AGM was that since the African Continental Free Trade Agreement is headquartered in Ghana, the AGM will afford the country the opportunity to advance the cause of its economic integration in response to some of these challenges facing the continent.

He also indicated that the event will help Ghana convey its appreciation to the AfDB as a long-standing strategic partner.

He noted that through the partnership,  Ghana has undertaken significant infrastructural development, including the construction of the only four-tier Interchange in West Africa, the Pokuase Interchange to ease traffic and improve productivity, construction of the Terminal 3 at the Kotoka International Airport to enhance travel experiences and promote connectivity, construction of the Awoshie-Pokuase road, Fufulso-Sawla Road and parts of the Northern Corridor Roads to advance the exchange of goods and services and deepen economic integration.

Meanwhile, the following are the activities that will take place during the meeting;

(i)Formal Opening, where H.E President Nana Akufo-Addo will deliver the Key Note Address and Closing Ceremonies (which will be web streamed and Televised);

(ii)Presidential Dialogue on “Africa: Development Challenges and Opportunities” (to be web-streamed and Televised);

(iii)Four (4) statutory sitting of the Board of Governors (closed sessions); and

(iv)Four (4) Knowledge events (open sessions) on:

  1. Launch of the African Economic Outlook Report, 2022;
  2. Building Resilient Digital Economies for Africa;
  3. Africa Day Event (coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the passing of Dr Kwame Nkrumah); d. Climate Resilience and Africa’s food systems;
  4. Green Jobs for Youth and Women in Post-COVID Africa;
  5. A Seminar on Special Drawing Rights (SDRs); and
  6. A visit by the Spouses of the participating Governors to the Osu Children’s Home.
