US Covid deaths hit 1m, death toll higher than any other country

US Covid deaths hit 1m

More than one million people have died in the Covid-19 pandemic in the US, according to Johns Hopkins, far and away the most deaths of any country.

While the sheer number of deaths from the coronavirus sets the US apart, the country’s large population of 332.5 million people does not explain the staggering mortality rate, which is among the highest in the world.

For every 100,000 residents, 291 people have died from Covid-19, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. Among the 20 worst affected nations, only two other countries – Brazil and Poland – have higher mortality rates per 100,000 people.

Deaths directly attributable to Covid-19 are only one measure of the pandemic’s toll. Deaths from drug overdoses hit a record high in 2021, killing at least 100,000 Americans. Chronic conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and dementia have contributed to the number of “excess deaths” – a number which includes other ailments exacerbated by the pandemic, as well as those deaths caused directly by Covid-19. This number crossed the one million threshold in mid-February.

Police officer walks near the scene of a shooting at a supermarket

An 18-year-old white gunman has opened fire at a supermarket in a Black neighbourhood in the US city of Buffalo, killing 10 people in what authorities called an act of “racially motivated violent extremism”.

Three others were wounded in the attack at the Tops Friendly Market on Saturday. The gunman, who was armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing body armour, was arrested after the shooting spree. Officials said he drove to Buffalo from his home in a New York state county “hours away” to launch the attack, which he broadcast on the internet.

Eleven of the victims were Black and two were white.

Stephen Belongia, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Buffalo field office, told reporters that the shooting is being investigated as “both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism”.

Joseph Gramaglia, the Buffalo Police Commissioner, said the suspect killed nine customers and a retired police officer working as an armed security guard.

Thousands protest against abortion in Croatia

Thousands of anti-abortion activists protest

Anti-abortion activists have protested in Croatia amid a fierce debate about reproductive rights in the country. While abortion is legal in the strongly Catholic EU nation, rising religious pressure means many doctors are refusing to carry out terminations.

The protest on Saturday came after thousands rallied to support a woman who was refused an abortion despite foetal abnormalities being diagnosed.

Croatian health authorities have now given her permission for a termination.

Following mounting public outrage, a medical commission ruled last week that medical and legal preconditions for the procedure had been met.But it said the woman would have to travel to neighbouring Slovenia for the procedure.

Concern has been growing for years that the procedure is becoming less available in the Balkan country due to pressure from the Catholic Church and activists.

An overwhelming majority of Croatia’s 3.9 million people are Catholics, and the Church plays an important role in society.

Turkey opposed to Finland, Sweden NATO membership

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said it is not possible for Ankara to support Sweden and Finland joining the transatlantic military alliance in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, signalling a possible hurdle to the two countries’ plans to join the organisation.

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Friday, Erdogan said Turkey, which is already part of NATO, did not have “positive views” on the Scandinavian countries’ moves to seek membership, accusing them of being “guesthouses for terrorist organisations”.

“They are even members of the parliament in some countries. It is not possible for us to be in favour,” he said, without providing any further details.

Turkey has repeatedly criticised Sweden and other western European countries for its handling of organisations deemed to be “terrorists” by Ankara, including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), as well as the followers of the United States-based Muslim scholar Fethullah Gulen.

Ankara has said Gulenists carried out a coup attempt in 2016. Gulen and his supporters deny the accusation.

Russia cuts electricity supply to Finland as country edges near NATO membership

Russia cuts electricity to Finland

Electricity supplies from Russia to Finland were cut on Saturday after power chiefs carried out their threat to stop the flow. RAO Nordic, the company responsible for sales of Russian electricity to Finland, said on Friday it would end sales at midnight because of unpaid bills.

The move came as Finnish politicians announced their plan to join the international defence group NATO.

Bosses of Fingrid, the Finnish electricity network, say the country can cope without imports of electricity from Russia. Just under 10 percent off the electricity consumed in Finland comes from Russia.

“The lack of electricity import from Russia will be compensated by importing more electricity from Sweden and by generating more electricity in Finland,” said Reima Päivinen, senior vice-president of power system operations at Fingrid.

A Fingrid spokesperson added: “Finland’s self-sufficiency in electricity generation is constantly improving. In particular, the amount of Finnish wind power generation is increasing every year and Finland is expected to become self-sufficient in electrical energy in 2023.”

Finland confirms Nato bid despite Putin warning

Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin

Finland has confirmed that it will apply for Nato membership, despite warnings from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin that abandoning neutrality would be a “mistake”.

President Sauli Niinisto called it a “historic day”. He says the shift in policy is in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Nato foreign ministers say they want a rapid accession process for Finland.

Sweden could also announce its intention to join as soon as Monday.

Finland shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia. Until now, it has stayed out of Nato to avoid antagonising its eastern neighbour.

On Saturday Mr Niinisto called Mr Putin to tell him of the Finnish decision and later said the call had been “direct and straight-forward” and “conducted without aggravations”.

“Avoiding tensions was considered important,” he said.

Announcing the decision in Helsinki on Sunday, he said he had wanted to “say it straight” to Mr Putin. “I, or Finland, are not known to sneak around and quietly disappear behind a corner,” he said. Finland’s parliament must now ratify the decision but Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she was confident MPs would debate the matter “with determination and responsibility”.

Remedies to treat diabetes at home

0
Cinnamon

Let us know some natural ways by which we can treat diabetes at home:

What not to eat:

There are some foods which can negatively impact your diabetes. So, the first thing you need to do is to remove these foods from your diet.

  1. Refined sugar – We all know that sugar, until it is in its most natural form, is bad for people suffering from diabetes. When consumed, refined sugar spikes the blood sugar rapidly. Sometimes even the natural form like honey can cause a sudden spike in the blood sugar levels. So, it’s better to avoid refined sugar by all means if you are a diabetic.
  2. Whole grains – Grains that have gluten in them should be avoided. Gluten is associated with diabetes as its intake can cause leaky gut leading to inflammation which in turn can lead to auto immune diseases.
  3. Alcohol – Alcohol consumption is directly related to diabetes. Alcohol not only damages your liver but also attacks the pancreas that produces insulin. Diabetes is linked with consumption of heavy alcohol which is two to three glasses a day. Beer should especially be avoided as it has a lot of carbohydrates.
  4. Cow’s milk – Just like whole grains, cow milk can trigger the immune system which can lead to inflammation. Milk coming from sheep and goat is not harmful in fact it helps to maintain the blood sugar level. But the conventional cow milk can be dangerous for you if you are suffering from diabetes.5. GMO foods – GMO foods have the capability to promote diabetes along with causing liver and kidney diseases. Go for products which are labeled as GMO-free.

What to eat and do

Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains a bioactive compound that can help to fight and prevent diabetes. Cinnamon is known to stimulate the insulin activity and thus regulate the blood sugar level. As excess of anything is bad, likewise cinnamon if taken in excess can increase the risk of liver damage due to a compound called coumarin present in it. The true cinnamon, not the one buy from shops (Cassia cinnamon) is safer to have.

How to consume cinnamon

– Mix half or one teaspoon of grounded cinnamon with warm water and have it once daily.

– Boil raw cinnamon in 2 glasses of water. Let it cool for 30 minutes and have it daily.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is easily found in Indian households. Though it’s bitter in taste, but combing it with buttermilk makes it taste better. Usually, aloe vera is used for beauty purposes but as it has anti-inflammatory properties it can heal the wounds. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is said to control the blood sugar levels.

Jamun

Jamun and its leaves have proven to be helpful in lowering the blood sugar levels. Consuming approximately 100 grams of Jamun every day is said to show tremendous improvement in your blood sugar levels.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is not only good for skin but also for diabetes. Recent studies have shown that consuming approximately 600 mg of Vitamin C daily can improve the blood sugar level significantly. People who have chronic diabetes should consume foods rich in Vitamin C every day. Some foods rich in Vitamin C are amla, orange, tomato and blueberry.

Exercise

One of the main reasons behind type II diabetes is being overweight. Any kind of physical activity, be it yoga, Zumba, aerobics, gymming, playing sports can significantly improve blood sugar level by maintaining your weight. Not only this, walking every day can help to reduce the blood sugar level tremendously.

3 ways to reduce your risk of diabetes

Choose water as your primary beverage

Sticking to water as your first choice of beverage helps you avoid other beverages that are loaded with sugar and preservatives.

Sugary beverages have been linked with an increased risk of both type 2 diabetes and latent autoimmune diabetes of adults.

Lose weight if you are overweight

Though not everyone who develops type 2 diabetes is overweight or obese, but the majority of people are. Excess visceral fat promotes inflammation and insulin resistance, which significantly increases one’s risk of diabetes.

Losing even 10 per cent of your body weight reduces your risk of getting type 2 diabetes. The rule is the more you lose, the more benefits you will experience.

Quit smoking

Smoking has been linked to many serious health conditions. Studies have also shown that smoking and second-hand smoking exposes one to type 2 diabetes.

Smoking increases the risk of diabetes by 44 per cent and people who smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, their risk increases by 61 per cent.
