KOFIH establishes US$234k Laparoscopic Surgical Centre for KATH

The Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) has supported the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to establish a Laparoscopic Surgical Training Center at its main theatre.

The US$234,000 facility, fully sponsored by KOFIH, would serve as the hub for training Laparoscopic Surgeons in the country, and provide laparoscopic services for the middle sector and beyond the country.

Laparoscopic Surgery is the use of cameras and instruments through small holes into the body of a patient and operating or doing the same thing that surgeons would have cut open to do, but leaving the patient with very little trauma.

Dr. Dominic Darkwah explaining the functions of the equipment to the media

At a brief ceremony to officially hand over the equipment to KATH last Friday, the Chief Executive Officer of (CEO) KATH, Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso, explained that the project was the second to be established by KOFIH in the country, and that he was excited because it was a dream come true.

He said the project would be a game-changer in Laparoscopic and Gynaecology by training surgeons, doctors, and nurses in the middle hub of the country, and even Ghana’s neighbouring countries.

Dr. Owusu-Danso was full of praise for the Lead Surgeon at the Center, Dr. Dominic Darkwah, who benefited from a training programme in South Korea and whose project proposals won an international award, which also led to KOFIH opting to help establish the center at KATH.

The CEO said some 15 other doctors, surgeons, and nurses had undergone training at the Center and there were others currently undergoing same in South Korea, and would soon return to augment their colleagues to man the center.

The Country Director of KOFIH, Mr. Jinho Kang, asked for proper maintenance of the equipments, and emphasised that the Foundation would continue to support KATH and Ghana in this area of surgery.

Dr. Dominic Darkwah, Consultant General Surgeon at the Center, told The Chronicle in an interview that the occasion marked a new beginning in surgery at KATH, and entreated the people of Kumasi and beyond to come and experience the laparoscopic kind of operation, which gives a lesser cut and practically a scar-less operation, a low painful experience after surgery, and faster recovery as compared to traditional surgery.

The rate of infection and blood loss is also very minimal.

Finding Resolutions to our Water and Electricity Problems? (1)

0
Opinion

A Case for VRA

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Electricity Company Ghana (ECG) have called for astronomical increases in tariffs.

While Ghana Water is calling for 334% increment in tariffs, ECG is going for a modest 148% increase. This means that where the average Ghanaian struggles before paying GH¢20.00 a month for water and another GH¢20.00 a month for electricity, if he must enjoy the same unit of these utilities, then he must go wherever to find GH¢86.80 for water and GH¢49.60for electricity. What a month that will be!

He who gets paid GH¢500.00, must pay GH¢50.00 for tithes, GH¢100.00 for offertory and special donations in church for the month, GH¢136.40 for water and electricity and suddenly over half his take-home pay is gone. With GH¢213.20 in hand, he has to perform magic to be able to settlecost of transportation, and other essential demands. If he is able to have GH¢1.00 as cash in hand at the end of the month then either he is highly favoured by God, he is a magician or he is a plain-cloth crook.

With this the question is, are the major utility providers justified in demanding such huge increments? In the wave of global economic breakdown which has resulted in hardships and worsening conditions of life, globally, with the United Kingdom (UK) for example, where the average man can no hardily afford a single full square meal a day, why should Ghana Water and ECG just get up and decide they will take more than their fare share in tariff increments? Mind you, government of Ghana only asks for 1.50% in financial transfers and this noble idea has been so much demonised by the opposition that almost every Ghanaian cries out loud when a few cedis are deducted from their MoMo accounts whenever they transfer peanuts to love ones and creditors.

On the issue with the electricity power producers; when the Volta River Authority (VRA) was established and the Akosombo hydroelectric plant became functional and started selling electricity to some neighbouring countries, GoG mandated VRA to solely administer its foreign accounts and for very good reason. As soon as the Authority needs to replace any equipment, it can order its foreign bankers to pay for the equipment from the manufacturers, ship it down to Ghana within a week and debit VRA’s foreign account.

This went on successfully and VRA, which was then the only electricity producer, was very efficient on its mandate. From 1965 until the early 80s, no obsolete equipment and machinery was being used in Akosombo.

After the coming of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) in 1981, Ghana’s problems originated. Due to populist mentality, the PNDC, which metamorphosized to NDC, started expanding electricity supplies to every town and village on sight. This put so much stress on the machinery and equipment, but the real problem was just around the corner.

The PNDC directed that all foreign accounts under VRA must be put under the direct control of government. So, it means if the Authority urgently needs a replacement of machinery or equipment it must write to the finance minister and the Governor of Bank of Ghana to justify its request.

As in all situations, there is never any idle money in government coffers. With millions of dollars of VRA money laying there and the government wants money for essential projects, money will be taken from the VRA accounts. Unfortunately, whenever the Authority needs money urgently to buy machinery and equipment and there is no money, it must wait until monies come in. During which time these essentials would start wearing out and cost of production would start going up.

Soon, cost of production keeps zooming up, due to obsolete machines and equipment and coupled with various governments not been able to approve realistic tariffs for full cost recovery, the VRA had to sell electricity at a loss. Example: if cost of producing 1 MWH (megawatt per hour) was GH¢1,000.00, VRA sells for GH¢650.00.

Another area of great loss is on the transmission cables. They are wearing out and literally leaking. For example, when 100mwh is loaded on the cable lines from Akosombo to Tema, only 65mwh will reach the destination. 35mwh gets lost through leakages on the line and not necessarily through power taping.

In my opinion, as much as ECG is asking for 148% hike in tariffs, and this is very much justified, I believe for full cost recovery tariffs, consumers must be asked to pay at least 200% of what they pay now. If this situation is not resolved, in a few years to come, Ghanaians will have no choice than to pay over 300% on their bill.

However, there is no way, Ghanaians can cope with this. Already 20% hike in transport fares is difficult to handle, and now 148% hike in cost of electricity.

The solution lies with government and I will suggest two things, in no particular order. Government must go for loan and use it to change all obsolete machinery and equipment, with brand-new cost-efficient ones. Then all transmission lines must be changed. Everything must be new and very efficient.

And more importantly, VRA must be allowed to solely handle its foreign accounts as before, with government having oversight responsibility over how those accounts are operated.

Anything other than these, ECG’s request must be granted.

I dumped APC because it operated like a cult -Adekilekun

Muslihudeen Adekilekun

An aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the House of Representatives in Osun State, Muslihudeen Adekilekun has dumped the party.

He was seeking the APC ticket for Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections.

Adekilekunz who spoke to journalists in Ede on Saturday, also announced the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as his new political platform.

Citing imposition of candidates as his decision to dump the APC, Adekilekun disclosed that he had been contributing to the growth of the APC in Osun since 2011.

He added that despite his many contributions to the growth of the party in the federal constituency, leaders often imposed candidates during party primaries, thereby making his sacrifice, loyalty and dedication all to no avail.

Maintaining that the party operated like a cult in Ede, he revealed that the APC had transformed into a party that encouraged bribery over loyalty, preferred godfatherism to popularity/acceptability.

He added that honouring and forcing party members to accept newcomers over faithful members and encouraging manipulation instead of integrity were all the hallmarks of the party.

Members of the APC in Osun had in recent times been protesting imposition of candidates on them.

They have also been alleging that the party leadership had been ignoring them and was only doing the bidding of the Governor.

On Sunday, May 8, 2022, APC members in Ilesa West Local Government had protested to the Osogbo residence of Adegboyega Famodun, the State party chairman and called for an end to imposition of candidates.

Govt sued for spending N1.48 trillion on maintaining refineries with no crude oil

President Buhari sued

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari “over his failure to probe allegations that over N1.48 trillion reportedly spent on maintaining the country’s four refineries between 2015 and 2020 may have been stolen, mismanaged or diverted into private pockets.”
The government reportedly spent N10.23 billion in June 2020 on three refineries that processed zero crude. Also in 2021, the government approved $1.5 billion (about N600 billion) to repair the Port Harcourt refinery. Despite the huge spending, the refineries are still not working while fuel scarcity persists.
In the suit number FHC/L/CS/806/2022 filed last week at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP is seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President Buhari to investigate the spending on Nigeria’s refineries, and alleged mismanagement of public funds budgeted for maintaining the refineries since 1999.”
SERAP is also seeking “an order of mandamus to compel President Buhari to ensure the prosecution of anyone suspected to be responsible for the importation and distribution of dirty fuel into Nigeria, and to identify and ensure access to justice and effective remedies to affected victims.”
SERAP is arguing that, “It is in the public interest to ensure justice and accountability for alleged corruption and mismanagement in the oil sector, which has resulted in the importation and distribution of dirty fuel and protracted fuel scarcity in the country.”
According to SERAP, “Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], and international standards impose clear obligations on the Buhari administration to take effective accountability measures to weed out, expose, and punish allegations of corruption in the oil sector, and to ensure effective remedies for victims.”

Boyfriend of murdered CCTU student arrested

Handcuff

The boyfriend of a student of the Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), Nana Ama Clark, whose mutilated body was found in Metropolis, has been arrested by the police to assist in investigations.

The suspect, Nicholas Ato Bronk Taylor, is currently in the custody of the Central Regional Police Command, and is expected to be put before a Magistrate Court in this morning.

Background to the horror incident

At about 21:00 hours GMT last Friday, the entire Cape Coast Metropolis was shocked when news broke out that a lifeless body of a young lady had been allegedly dumped at OLA, a suburb of the Metropolis, by suspected ritualists.

The lady, who has been identified as 24-year-old Nana Ama Clark, had her sex organ completely removed with visible bruises on her body, which was partly covered with blood.

The news, which sent shock waves through the town, also got residents of OLA completely traumatised, since it appeared strange and uncharacteristic of life in the suburb.

Some eyewitnesses recounted that from a distance it appeared that she was, perhaps, locked down by the driver of a vehicle who did not stop.

However, a much closer view indicated that she might have been deliberately killed for ritual purposes.

Identification

The young lady was later identified as Nana Ama Clark, a Level 300 Marketing student at the Cape Coast Technical University, formerly known as Cape Coast Polytechnic (C-Poly).

The body has since been deposited at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital pending further investigations by the police, while the family has been notified.

Aisha Buhari tells APC not to sideline women in 2023 elections

Mrs Aisha Buhari

The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari has asked the All Progressives Congress not to grant free nomination forms as a strategy to relegate or sideline aspiring women from attaining higher elective positions.

Aisha made the comment on Saturday at a summit for over 700 APC female aspirants at the State House conference centre in Abuja.

Women interested in the ticket of the APC for elective positions are expected to only pay for the expression of interest form while the nomination form is free.

Addressing the aspirants, Mrs Aisha acknowledged their courage vying for various elective positions across the country.

She affirmed her support to all of them.

She said it was important for women to rally round all the contestants and confront any marginalization in the political space.

Mrs Buhari also urged the aspirants to eschew violence, jealousy and hatred, which according to her is critical to excelling.

Pregnant woman freed after Gunmen abduct train passengers

People travel by train because the road is too dangerous

Gunmen who abducted dozens of train passengers in northern Nigeria have released one of the hostages – a heavily pregnant woman. In a video message circulating on social media, the woman said the abductors told her she had been freed on “compassionate grounds”.

She was among those kidnapped in March when armed men blew up the railway and attacked a busy train traveling between the capital, Abuja, and Kaduna. At least nine people were killed.

It is not yet clear exactly how many people were kidnapped but pictures released last month by the gunmen showed at least 62 captives.

Kaduna state commissioner for internal security Samuel Aruwan has confirmed to the BBC the release of the hostage, saying she would given medical treatment.

Local media have reported that another of the hostages gave birth in captivity last month.

The hostage-takers had earlier freed a bank executive, also supposedly on compassionate grounds given his old age – although sources said a ransom had been paid in his case.

The Nigerian authorities have blamed the attack on elements from the Islamist militant group Boko Haram who had teamed up with kidnapping gangs operating in north-western Nigeria.

The kidnappers have said they were not seeking a ransom but that the authorities knew their demands, without giving details.

Analysts say they might be demanding a prisoner swap – in exchange for some of their colleagues arrested by the Nigerian security forces.

The Abuja-Kaduna highway is one of the most dangerous roads in the country, and consequently more commuters had started using the railway, which opened in 2016.

After the hijacking it was announced that military aircraft will escort the trains once repair work on the 190km (120-mile) track is completed. It is not known exactly when services will resume.

Kidnapping for ransom has become commonplace across Nigeria.

A report by security research and intelligence firm Beacon Consulting Ltd said that in the first three months of this year, more than 3,500 people were killed and many more kidnapped by armed groups.

Ukraine wins Eurovision song contest, UK comes second

Ukraine Wins Song Contest

Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra have won the Eurovision Song Contest, in a symbolic show of public support following the country’s invasion by Russia.
The rap-folk band, who were given special permission to leave the war-torn country, soared to first place with 631 points.
They ended their performance in Turin with a plea: “Please help Ukraine, help Mariupol, help Azovstal right now.”
Their winning song, Stefania, was originally written as a tribute to frontman Oleh Psiuk’s mother, but it has been re-purposed as a rallying cry for Ukraine amidst the Russian invasion.
Sam Ryder came second for the UK, the country’s best result since 1998.
A former construction worker, he had been keenly favoured ahead of the competition thanks to his soaring power ballad, Space Man, which evoked the classic British pop of Queen and Elton John.
It topped the jury vote, amassing 283 points, but was pipped at the post when public votes were added to the total. (The UK came fifth with the public, with Ukraine receiving the most points). However, his second place position reverses a long decline in the UK’s Eurovision fortunes. The country hasn’t been in the top 10 since Jade Ewen came fifth in 2009. In both 2019 and 2021, the UK came last.

Britney Spears announces ‘devastating’ miscarriage

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari announced they have lost their baby

Britney Spears has announced she has suffered a miscarriage, a month after revealing her pregnancy. The singer told her Instagram followers that she and partner Sam Asghari had “lost our miracle baby”.

It comes months after she escaped a legal arrangement that gave her father control over many aspects of her life, including her reproductive health.

The 40-year-old, who has two teenage sons, previously said she wanted a family with personal trainer Asghari. “It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy,” she wrote in a post on Saturday.

She continued: “This is a devastating time for any parent. “Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however, we were overly excited to share the good news.

“Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family.”

Britney reveals pregnancy after conservatorship in 2008 Spears’ father set up a form of legal guardianship, known as a conservatorship, after she experienced a public mental health crisis.

Speaking against the conservatorship in court last year, she told a judge the arrangement prevented her from marrying or removing her birth control.

Announcing her pregnancy in April, she said it would probably be “hard” as she had previously experienced perinatal depression – the medical term for depression occurring any time between becoming pregnant to about a year after giving birth.

The singer, who has two children from her marriage to Kevin Federline, said it had been “absolutely horrible” and was rarely talked about in the past.
