Kylian Mbappe reports for pre-season training with PSG

Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe has made his return to Paris Saint-Germain ahead of pre-season with the France striker beginning a new chapter at the club after signing a £34million megadeal.

The 23-year-old was pictured stepping out of a vehicle and walking into the club’s training complex while looking casual in a t-shirt and sunglasses.

For a long time, it looked highly unlikely that Mbappe would be spending the 2022-23 campaign with the French champions. But the World Cup winner spurned the advances of Real Madrid to agree a highly lucrative new three-year contract at the Parc des Princes worth over £650,000 per week.

PSG went to extraordinary lengths to secure the future of their marquee player with Mbappe, who pocketed a signing-on bonus of £126m, set to be among football’s highest earners.

It’s all change in some regards at PSG, however, with new coach Christophe Galtier getting down to work in training after replacing Mauricio Pochettino.

Though PSG once again won the Ligue 1 title last season, finishing 15 points ahead of rivals Marseille, they fell short in the French Cup and suffered a humiliating Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

Galtier, who has come in from Nice on a two-year deal, will become the latest manager tasked with ending PSG’s search for the holy grail of Europe’s leading competition.

And Mbappe, who scored 39 times in 46 outings last season, will be integral to their chances of finally cracking the Champions League.

PSG will begin their pre-season schedule with a friendly against Ligue 2 club Quevilly-Rouen at their training complex on Friday.

Barcelona ‘are preparing for a summit meeting over Frenkie de Jong’s future

0
Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong’s future is set to be resolved in the forthcoming days with Barcelona‘s hierarchy set for showdown talks over the Manchester United target.

De Jong is being pursued by United with negotiations continuing despite the complexities of his move from Barcelona and claims by the Dutchman that he wants to stay at the Nou Camp.

The two clubs have reached a broad agreement over a £55million deal but Barca still owe £17m in deferred wages to the 25-year-old.

The midfielder begins pre-season training with Barcelona on Monday after an extended previous campaign due to his international exploits with Holland.

And his impending return will see discussions over his future moved forward by the club with Barca boss Xavi reportedly keen to have it resolved before they fly out to America on July 16 for a two-week pre-season tour, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish publication state Xavi will meet with director of football Mateu Alemany and others – with the board waiting to see how essential the Holland international is to his midfield plans.

A hold up in the process has been the fact that De Jong didn’t wished to be disturbed during his summer break, which Barcelona respected.

Whatever the outcome of the summit meeting, Xavi will relay the information back to De Jong.

As Mundo Deportivo add though, De Jong wants to remain at the Nou Camp – loving life in Catalonia and about to move into a house he has just renovated. From the sporting side too, the face that Barca are in the Champions League and United aren’t only strengthens his resolve.

Xavi is a fan of De Jong but if he was to depart, then a move for Bernardo Silva – who was close to leaving Manchester City 12 months ago – could be on the cards.

Crystal Palace confirm the signing of midfielder Cheick Doucoure in a £22m deal from Lens

Cheick Doucoure

Crystal Palace has announced the signing of Mali international Cheick Doucoure on a five-year contract.

It is believed that the Eagles agreed a £22million fee plus a sell-on clause with French club Lens for the midfielder’s signature.

Doucoure, 22, becomes Patrick Vieira‘s third new arrival of the summer after teenage winger Malcolm Ebiowei and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

‘I’m very happy, I feel a lot of joy and a lot of pride to be a Palace player,’ Doucoure said. ‘I’m proud to be at Palace today.’

‘Cheick’s arrival is yet another statement of intent, demonstrating our ambition to further improve the squad this summer,’ Palace chairman Steve Parish added.

‘We are extremely confident that Cheick will adapt seamlessly to the rigours of the Premier League and that he will contribute positively to the squad, and I wish him all the very best for his time with us.’

It is a significant coup for Palace, who made Doucoure their number one target this summer.

The 22-year-old made 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season and helped Lens finish seventh in the table as he formed a strong partnership with Arsenal and Newcastle target Seko Fofana at the base of midfield.

Lens did not need to sell and rejected Palace’s opening bid of £14.5million, but once the Eagles improved their offer it was hard for the French side to turn down.

Eight-cap Mali international Doucoure appears to be a ready-made replacement for Cheikhou Kouyate, who is expected to leave Selhurst Park as a free agent this summer.

Meanwhile, Fulham have asked about the availability of Luka Milivojevic, 31, who could be allowed to leave Palace as he is now in the final 12 months of his contract.

Laryea Kingston wants GFA to associate ex-players to Black Stars ahead of WC

Laryea Kingston

Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to associate ex-players to the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars have been placed in Group H for the global showpiece together with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

Ghana will open their World Cup by taking on Portugal before playing South Korea and then wrap up their group campaign with a clash with Uruguay.

“Yes, It’s very very necessary. You know when former players, when the current players see them around the team like Senegal did in the Nations Cup in Cameroon, you can see El Hadji Diouf, Khalilou Fadiga and all those people around the team, it’s a motivation to the young ones,” Kingston said as quoted by Footballghana.com.

“Not only them going there (World Cup), you attach ex-players that can add value to the squad in terms of former players that are into coaching. They can do opponent scouting  and bring feed back to the team. I think it works a lot.”

“Now modern football, opponent analysis is very very important. If you can pick two former players that are capable to scout opposing teams and bring the feedback to the team, I think it’s a plus to the team,” he added.

“Before you go and meet the opponent, you know everything about the opponent. You have a clear idea, the plan to tackle the opponent so I think it’s very important that they associate most of the former players not just former players but players that can bring value to help the team function.”

Yes, I Sold Vag Land @ Airport; to recoup my losses

0
Dr Samuel Yaw Annor

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) and Annor & Associates, Dr Samuel Yaw Annor, has admitted in court that he indeed sold Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) land, located at the Airport Commercial Area to a private developer to recoup his losses.

According to him, the sale of the land was due to a breach of agreement on the part of VAG, which refused to give a vacant position to Annor & Associates by a stipulated period, in a contract reached between both sides.

He added that VAG (1st defendant), which has been sued alongside Annor & Associates Limited (2nd defendant) and two others – Dr. Samuel Yaw Annor (3rd Defendant) by Dream Reality Limited (plaintiff), breached the agreement at a time most of the Directors of the 2nd and 3rd defendants were domiciled in South Africa.

Dr Annor further told the court that the directors had made arrangements for funding and also engaged the services of architects, engineers, and project managers who would have helped to design the shopping complex for which the land was given to them.

He argued that since VAG failed to give them a vacant position of the land, the engineers, architects, and financiers who were engaged gave up, with the view that the project might not materialise.

He, however, confessed under cross-examination by counsel for VAG, Roberts Ekor Dessah, at the Land Division of the Accra High Court, presided over by Jennifer Anne Myers Ahmed, on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 that the sale of the land was equally a break of the contractual agreement.

When asked to mention the names of the directors he had earlier referred to,  the defendant cited himself, his wife Barbara Annor and one Nathany Annor who was living partially in Ghana and South Africa.

He told the court that he did not conform to the provisions of the agreement before the sale of the land, due to certain circumstances.

Mr. Dessah, counsel for VAG suggested to him, Dr Annor, that at the time he sold a portion of the land meant for the construction of penthouses, and a shopping mall for the benefit of the ex-servicemen and women to the plaintiff, he (Dr. Annor) continued to attend meetings with VAG in respect of their original contractual agreement.

But Dr. Annor denied the assertion and explained that records of minutes before the court, which are in reference to meetings held between him and VAG from 2010 to 2012, were in relation to VAG taking possession of the land and doing so mounted a big signboard that the land belongs to the military so everyone should keep off.

The defense counsel again told him, the defendant that those meetings produced an addendum that has been captured under a supplementary agreement, and Dr. Annor was one of the major contributors to its contents.

He (counsel) again told him (Annor) that decisions reached in the supplementary agreement made it explicit that there should be a sod-cutting ceremony by the end of July 2010, although the initial agreement dated back to 2006.

Unfortunately, Mr. Dessah continued,  soon after that sod-cutting ceremony on July 28, 2010, Annor & Associates represented by Dr. Annor, once again sold the rest of the land to Independent Properties (4th defendant), which he is the majority shareholder and his wife is the director, on August 20, 2010.

But Dr. Annor responded that the land was sold to Independent Properties in response to a consequence of the series of meetings that were held, and in fact, the said company was present at the sod-cutting ceremony, saying “so, it is not as if VAG and the Ministry of Defence didn’t have any idea at all that the 2nd defendant sold the land.”

The defense counsel then asked, “Can you provide evidence of meetings that were held to sell this land or any approval from VAG to sell the land?”

Dr. Annor answered in the negative that “not at this point, but I can show in due time that before the transfer of the land, VAG was aware of the transfer by the Land Commission.”

Dr. Annor clarified to the court that he is not the majority shareholder of the 4th defendant but a shareholder and could not give the full name and address of the secretary of Independent Property, whom he said was lawyer Kwame.

But the defence Counsel suggested to him (defendant Annor)   that if Dr Annor and his wife have something  to do with Independent Properties, it cannot be true that the company is an innocent purchaser of value without the knowledge of VAG as an interested party in the land.

Accordimng to VAG counsel,  Dr Annor acted unfairly to all parties in the  transaction, but the latter denied the claim and stressed that VAG, Annor & Associates, and the 3rd defendant were all aware that they have changed the agreement from a shopping mall by Annor and Associates to the development of a hotel complex by Independent Properties.

Dr. Annor maintained that the provision of the five penthouses for the VAG was going to be built on top of the hotel complex.

Annor & Associates was also accused of breaching the 2nd leg of the agreement by failing to pay an amount of US$134,558.40 into VAG Trust account with the Stanbic Bank, but the defendant again claimed that was not the case, since the 2nd defendant has sought on some occasions to get a statement from Stanbic Bank to know exactly how much it has paid into the Trust, but that effort never materialized. The case was adjourned to July 13 at 1:00 pm

Economic difficulties: this one too shall pass; Okyenhene

0
Okyenhene Amoatia Ofori Payin

The Okyenhene Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori-Panin has thrown his weight behind the government of President Akufo-Addo in the midst of the current micro fiscal challenges confronting the country.

According to the revered chief of the Akyem Abuakwa traditional area, it is no secret that the country is faced with difficulties, but he expressed optimism that “this one too will pass.”

The Okyenhene was speaking last Wednesday at the inaugural memorial lecture in honor of late Okyenhene Ba, Dr Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta, who died on November 30, 2020.

Referencing the life and legacy of his stool son to the current challenges in the country, the Okyenhene said countries had developed not necessarily because of what they have, but how they were able to put those in good use.

However, the Okyenhene opined that regardless of the fact that the situation the country is in would phase off, truth, equity and good men would triumph over lies and evil. He did not explain.

He said “These are difficult times in our country. And as the President says, this one too will pass. And let me say that consequently notwithstanding; truth, equity, and good men will triumph over lies and evil and bad people all the time. And if you don’t believe it just keep on living. It may be darkness tonight, but we have the capacity to light the candle and show the way where our foot is going to be landed. So we were not worried so much about what is happening but we care. But we have again what it takes…the bible says in Psalm 35 [that] wiping may endure at night but joy cometh in the morning. And with that there will be a new birth of hope in this country trust me…”

The Okyenhene, who was giving a royal eulogy, said he knew about the man, from when little Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori-Atta was brought to the place to grow up.

He recalled that in his old age, Dr Jones insisted that he was sent to Kyebi to live there, explaining that the man’s heart was deeply connected to where he came from.

The Okyenhene used that scenario to called on indigenes to “go back home” and help. He said that people with wealth should not forget where they come from, citing that they could go back to check on their primary school teachers for instance.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Addo, in giving a tribute to his niece, said that the late Dr Jones believed that government which does not allow people to express themselves freely, “was never a good government.”

He added that the former Deputy Minister for Finance, Dr Jones, was a strong believer of the market economy that the state directed or managed economies does not succeed.

What he wanted to do was to set a system in place where private enterprise; the work of entrepreneurs, private people properly motivated, will be the way to develop economies.

“But being who he was, determined always to go forward in the Parliament of the 3rd Republic he distinguished himself. He distinguished himself with an incident that came to have long lasting repercussions for our constitutional and political development…”

President Akufo-Add was referring to when the Member of Parliament for Begoro Constituency (1969-1972 and 1979-1981), Dr Jones put together forces to vote down the budget of Dr Hilla Liman, the first time in the nation’s history.

The President believed Dr Jones, given his history, has made an indelible imprint on the politics of Ghana since he entered politics.

At the lecture, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Chair of the Governing Council of UG, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo as well as retired Professor of the Department of History, UG, Robert Yaw Addo-Fening all took turns to say some few words.

The lecture itself was given by the Seventh Speaker of Parliament, who is also a retired head, department of Political Science, UG, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, on the theme “The life of a fearless Ghanaian patriot.”

At the lecture, there was an announcement of intent to endow a chair and fund an academic award, as well as to fund a leadership award.

Lapaz driver allegedly swindles 3 ‘burgers’ off thousands of cedis

0
Court

A 38-year-old driver, Mark Frimpong Kwakye, has allegedly defrauded three United Kingdom (UK)-based Ghanaians off GH¢195,045.00. The accused, who is a resident of Lapaz, a suburb of Accra, has been remanded into custody after being charged on seven counts of defrauding by an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the police prosecution officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah, three of the victims – Grace Acheampong, Charles Owusu Adusei and Noah Kwabena Ofori – out of the six persons allegedly defrauded by Mark are based in the UK.  The rest of the victims, Daniel Nuamoah, Cynthia Osei Bonsu and Kwame Gyamfi live in Ghana.

The prosecutor said the suspect defrauded the complainants under a false pretence that he could aid them in the acquisition of visas within a few days to tour Europe.  According to the prosecution, Mark Frimpong Kwakye, the suspect, was actually discovered by one of the complainants, Grace Acheampong, who, in 2018, saw an advert for a travel and tour holiday event on ‘Kumasi – online TV Station,’ on which the accused person was the host.

The prosecutor said the suspect in the course of the programme reportedly urged interested persons who wanted to travel or tour any part of European to contact him on the following numbers: 0244957408, 0592313249, 055174570 and 0554935165.

The court was told that Grace Acheampong, although was in Europe, got interested and in the latter part of 2018 visited Ghana to meet the accused person. In the course of their engagement, the accused confirmed to her that the travel and tour business that he announced was genuine, and even showed her some travel documents belonging to other applicants who were about to travel to Europe in a few days.

Grace Acheampong then introduced other the victims to the accused person somewhere in 2019, and without wasting any time, Mark Frimpong Kwakye demanded various sums of monies from them, as their UK visa processing fees.

In 2020, the accused informed Grace Acheampong that the online TV business was also into a lucrative business and collected an amount of US$5,000.00 from her to establish an online TV channel, but that also turned out to be a hoax.

The accused person additionally demanded and collected GH¢22,000 from Kwame Gyamfi, GH¢5,000 from Daniel Nuamoah Fofie, GH¢4,500 from Ann Ama Armah, GH¢29,600 from Noah Kwabena Ofori, and GH¢20,000, US$1,500 and £3,000 from Charles Owusu Edusei.

In another development, Benjamin Odonkor Nartey, an entrepreneur and Travel and Tours operator, has allegedly defrauded seven persons, including teachers, traders and a driver, a total amount of GH¢338,830.00 with the promise to secure travel documents for them to travel to Canada, the United States (US) and Germany, but ended up dumping them in Morocco.

His victims are Owusu Edmund, a trader at Agona Akrofoso in the Ashanti Region, Regina Mensah, a trader in Accra, Pickson Owusu Ntiamoah, a teacher at Asante Mampong, Joyce Ama Ababio, a businesswoman based at Nsuta Beposo, Nelson Agyeman Brempong, a driver at Santrokofi in the Volta Region, Juliet Dassa, a trader in Accra, and Victoria Adokoh Mensah, a teacher in Cape Coast.

The accused had promised to secure visas and flight tickets for the victims, but failed to honour his pledge.

Benjamin Odonkor Nartey was, therefore, arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh, on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, on seven counts of defrauding by false pretences. He pleaded guilty to five of the counts, but his sentence and conviction were deferred to the end of the trial.

The accused was granted bail to the sum of GH¢300,000.00 with three gainfully employed sureties, and one should be justified. The court further ordered that the sureties must deposit photocopies of their valid identification cards with the Court Registry.

The facts of the case as narrated by the police prosecution officer, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah, was that the complainants were allegedly lured into Benjamin’s web in March this year, when the latter made a false representation that he was the owner of a travel and tours company, known as ‘BMAJ GIFTED’.

He claimed to have packages for interested persons seeking to travel to the United State of America (USA), Canada and Schengen countries.

Based on this claim, some of the complainants and their relatives abroad contacted Benjamin on phone, and he confirmed that the travel packages were genuine. The complainants then became convinced and paid various sums of money, totalling GH¢338,830.00, to the accused person. Some made the payment personally to the accused, while others made deposits into his personal Cal Bank account.

The accused collected an amount of GH¢52,500 from Edmund Owusu to secure him a German visa and flight ticket, GH¢65,000 from Juliet Dassa for a US visa and flight ticket, GH¢62,000 from Victoria Adokoh Mensah for a US visa and flight ticket, GH¢20,000 from Nelson Agyeman Brempong for a US visa and flight ticket, GH¢65,000 from Regina Mensah for a Canadian visa and flight ticket, GH¢51,000 from Dickson Ntiamoah for a German visa and flight ticket, and GH¢23,330 from Joyce Ama Ababio for a US visa and flight ticket.

Unfortunately, he said, the accused took the complainants to Morocco to emplane to their various destinations, but abandoned them and returned to Ghana with their passports. The case has been adjourned to August 10, 2022.
