Barcelona ‘are preparing for a summit meeting over Frenkie de Jong’s future

Frenkie de Jong’s future is set to be resolved in the forthcoming days with Barcelona‘s hierarchy set for showdown talks over the Manchester United target.

De Jong is being pursued by United with negotiations continuing despite the complexities of his move from Barcelona and claims by the Dutchman that he wants to stay at the Nou Camp.

The two clubs have reached a broad agreement over a £55million deal but Barca still owe £17m in deferred wages to the 25-year-old.

The midfielder begins pre-season training with Barcelona on Monday after an extended previous campaign due to his international exploits with Holland.

And his impending return will see discussions over his future moved forward by the club with Barca boss Xavi reportedly keen to have it resolved before they fly out to America on July 16 for a two-week pre-season tour, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish publication state Xavi will meet with director of football Mateu Alemany and others – with the board waiting to see how essential the Holland international is to his midfield plans.

A hold up in the process has been the fact that De Jong didn’t wished to be disturbed during his summer break, which Barcelona respected.

Whatever the outcome of the summit meeting, Xavi will relay the information back to De Jong.

As Mundo Deportivo add though, De Jong wants to remain at the Nou Camp – loving life in Catalonia and about to move into a house he has just renovated. From the sporting side too, the face that Barca are in the Champions League and United aren’t only strengthens his resolve.

Xavi is a fan of De Jong but if he was to depart, then a move for Bernardo Silva – who was close to leaving Manchester City 12 months ago – could be on the cards.
