The UP Tradition Must Be Respected

When victory came in 2016 and party members go to seek for jobs and other opportunities to enhance their lives, they will be told, Prof. Attafuah said, that the president had directed that no party member should be employed and Gabby Otchere Darko justified this by saying it was about political neutrality.

All that the party grassroot and foot soldiers are to do is to campaign and make the party win elections and after that just sit down quietly and wait for the next elections.

When the opportunity came for the NPP government to nominate the first Special Persecutor, Martin Amidu of NDC was opted for, over many more brilliant NPP lawyers by way of political neutrality.

Martin had a bad track record, even as a minister in Atta Mills’ government. In the end, this outcast in his NPP became their hero, because he came out to label his employers as very corrupt and voluntarily resigned.

This is what happens when independent minded NPP members are set aside for non-party members who inwardly do not accept the UP-Tradition values.

Is Hon Atta Akyea ignorant of the harm, in imposing candidates on the Party? In 2008, the NPP lost the General Elections mainly because of interferences by the Party’s elites into constituencies’ choices of parliamentary candidates.

Kwesi Kyei Frimpong and I.K. Poku-Edusie were chosen over Nana Yaw Ofori-Kuragu and Joseph Osei-Owusu in the Bosome-Freho and Bekwai constituencies, respectfully in the Ashanti region.

In Nkawkaw constituency Kwabena Edusa Okekyere was chosen over Seth Adjei Baah and Thomas Odonkor Ogajah was preferred over DCE Alhaji Saani Iddiin Wulensi.

In all cases the rejected ones won their seats on independent tickets. Same happened in 2020 in Fomena constituency.

This is what Hon. Atta Akyea believes in and wants to be legalized in NPP so that, only a privilege few would appoint party officers, parliamentary and presidential candidates. Whether such persons are firm on the ground and can win elections, would not be the criteria.

In such a case, while other parties will be looking for people who will appeal to the electorates and put them across as candidates, NPP will be doing “it is whom you know” and bring along people who may be unknown and not loved, for the Party to lose big time.

In the 1951 Elections, the UGCC picked Omanhene of Assin Atandasu, Nana Sir Tsibu Darku IX, as its candidate for one of the two Sekondi-Takoradi seats.

Nana Darku was a Knight of the Order of the British Empire, Leader of the Joint Provincial Council and Senior African Member of the Burns Constitution, while the CPP picked a common railway engineer, as in, train driver, Alfred Pobee Biney as its candidate.

The latter was a grassroot man, loved by most people, while the former, only appealed to the elite. At the end of the day, Alfred Pobee Biney had 51 votes and Nana Sir Tsibu Darku IX had only 13 votes.

Hon Atta Akyea wants to revive the failures of his granduncle, Dr. J.B. Danquah, and make them party policies in the NPP, a policy that looks down on the youth and ordinary members.

He is talking about the need to set aside the current NPP’s policy that does not reward a vice president to automatically take over from the president to lead the party.

This is certainly an agenda to make the flag bearer to be appointed by a privilege few. As soon as this is implemented, there is no way the Party membership will have any say in the choice of flag bearers.

Presidents will hand over to their vice. So, where is the voice of the grassroot in all this? What are they to do, if not only to campaign?

Hon Atta Akyea, is saying it is waste of money and needless to elect a flag bearer because of mistakes of the past? What mistakes, is Atta Akyea referring to? Is he saying for real that the Kufuor Administration which had H.E. Aliu Mahama as vice president, was the worst ever NPP presidency?

And Aliu Mahama was non-performing and so this warrants the change of the way the Party elects its flag bearer? Atta Akyea should be bold and rubbish the good works of H.E. Aliu Mahama.

He is rather exposing himself as one who feels that no one can touch him, so he can freely break the Party rules, and this breeds indiscipline.

When Hopeson Adorye went ahead to remind Party faithful about the convention in the Party, where the arrangement is for a Southerner Christian flag bearer and a Northerner Muslim running mate, all hell broke loose.

Musa Superior fired salvos at Adorye and Hon Farouk Aliu Mahama, whose father we are now been told achieved nothing, immediately followed suite.

Today, Hon Atta Akyea is suggesting some more dangerous policies, that could break up the Party and send it into history like how J.B. Danquah and others did and the UGCC got dissolved after only five years, and yet we cannot hear Musa and Farouk, coming out with condemnations.

So, it is true what Fiddler said in Roots, that “some live by the law and others die by the same law!”

“Atta Akyea, please, the precepts and tenets of the UP Tradition must be obeyed and upheld, not disrespected.”

The Democratic UP Tradition Being Bastardised

This is the second time I compelled to express my opinion, Hon Atta Akyea. This time it is on his thoughts about his New Patriotic Party and the UP Tradition.

As a lawyer, Hon. Atta Akyea knows too well that laws are not meant to be broken, so his attitude that clearly violates the Riot Act of the NPP, which states that no party or government official must declare for any aspirant, is most, inappropriate.

From the way Hon. Atta Akyea is going about loudly pushing for the Vice President to be automatically made the Party’s flag bearer, clearly demonstrates that his camp knows that H.E. Dr. Bawumia has no chance in the presidential primaries.

I am not suggesting so, but Atta Akyea’s recent attitude clearly demonstrates that.

So, the question is, why is Atta Akyea and people who think like him, seriously using any means, mostly foul and against the constitution of the NPP to push Dr. Bawumia through?

Has it got anything to do with the Agyapa Deal and making sure it becomes a law and operational in Ghana?

There must be some reason, because these are expressions on the streets and what Atta Akyea is going about saying proves that his very life depends on the victory, for Dr. Bawumia, at the primaries and at the Presidential Elections.

Hon. Atta Akyea spoke a deep meaning English phrase in his previous interview with Paul Adom-Otchere.

He stated that there is the need to change history in the NPP. By definition of, to change history, it means to try to change the way that people think about an event in the past, often in a way that is not honest or correct.

In 1992, the Party went into congress and elected Prof. Adu Boahen as flag bearer. He contested the presidential elections and lost.

He entered into Congress in 1996 again but lost to J.A. Kufuor who went on to contest the presidential elections but also lost. JAK came back again in 1998 for the Party’s primaries.

And lot of derogatory words were used on him, to imply that if he lost once, he should not be given a second chance. But none of such words were used on Adu Boahen when he came for a second chance.

J.A. Kufuor went ahead and won the Presidential Elections in 2000 to become the second president of the republic.

Fast forward, in 2008, victory was ceded to Nana Addo for him to become Party flag bearer and he however lost the 2008 presidential elections. He went for a second bite of the mango in 2012 but again lost at the Presidential Elections.

Still with strength in him, he proceeded to contest the Party’s Presidential Primaries for the third time and won. This time round he went on to win the Presidential Elections to be the fourth president of the republic.

Atta Akyea should explain what went on here, for it is important to know why the same people who did not understand why someone should go for a second time, would watch on and cheered on while another person went on for a third.

If Hon. Atta Akyea is sticking his head out for the Vice President, he has every right to do so, but he should go about in a conduct that would be line with the Party’s rules and most importantly he should not insult the intelligence of the entire Party membership.

What he and others like him are doing, is rather making that fine gentleman, Mahamudu Bawumia look bad in the sight of many.

Atta Akyea finds problems with our election of presidential candidates and chooses to call the process, a selection and adding that it is too costly.

I do not want to believe that because we had a pure-bred blue blooded socialist and Nkrumaist as our national chairman, Atta Akyea had been schooled on the way Socialists do their selection of their leaders.

The socialists have a committee which would sit and appoint who should lead the party. And this is what Atta Akyea wants to introduce into a pure bred, blue blooded democratic party like the NPP.

So, in the wishes of Atta Akyea, the NPP should have a Politburo and a Central Committee. While the former to takes all the decisions of the party, the latter will only approve or reject them.

So now, who chooses membership of the Politburo? The Central Committee, I presume will be the National Executive Committee which the party members elected into office. But with this new arrangement what will party members do?

With Atta Akyea’s idea fully implemented, members of the Politburo will nominate members of the Politburo and the Central Committee to be approved by the Central Committee.

Then the polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, constituency and regional executives will become reductant. Parliamentary and presidential candidates will be appointed by a few and not elected by the Party membership.

The only way to be on the ballot paper during elections, is to have godparents on the Politburo and Central Committee, who one should worship and pay homage to.

Meanwhile the poorly resourced party members on the ground will be directed to put in their best to make the party candidates win the elections. The UP Tradition is bastardised.

Several massive posters of Andre Ayew have been spotted in Qatar as part of the promotion for the 2022 World Cup.

Ayew is one of many stars who will grace the elite competition later this year, and organizers are using his image to hype the upcoming tournament.

With less than three months until the start of the global showpiece, which will be watched by billions, Ayew’s posters have been spotted on popular streets in the Arab country.

Ayew plays football in Qatar, and his participation in the World Cup, particularly leading a great nation like Ghana, is regarded by Qataris who absolutely love their league.

Kudus agrees personal terms with Everton, awaiting Ajax approval

0
Mohammed Kudus

Mohammed Kudus has agreed personal terms with Everton and is awaiting Ajax’s approval to join the Premier League club.

The Ghana international is looking to leave Ajax after being demoted to the bench despite his pre-season exploits.

Everton made Kudus a personal offer, which he accepted, but the Toffees are having difficulty convincing Ajax.

Agents close to the deal told Ghana’s leading football news outfit Ghanasoccernet.com that Everton spoke with officials on Ajax about taking the player on loan.

The Toffees also told the Amsterdam-based club they will take the player on loan until the end of the season before they make a move for a permanent deal.

This is a significant step in the talented youngster’s quest to leave Ajax to go on loan as he is seeking regular playing time with the 2022 World Cup looming.

Goodison Park were subsequently asked to put the offer on paper before it is considered even though Ajax stated their reluctance to release the player.

Despite the hesitation, Ajax are expecting the official bid to be placed before the Dutch side gives an official response to the offer from Everton.

Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder is refusing to give Kudus playing time. Kudus has played 46 matches for the Dutch giants since his move from Denmark, scoring six goals and providing four assists even though he was affected by a knee injury.

Cremonese sign Felix Afena-Gyan

The budding talented forward has completed a sensational switch to the Serie A newcomers until the summer of 2027.

Ghana international Felix Afena-Gyan has officially joined Italian top-tier club US Cremonese from AS Roma in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old signed a five-year contract worth €7 million with the Giovanni Zini Stadium outfit after passing a mandatory medical examination on Saturday.

The club’s official statement reads “US Cremonese announces that it has definitively acquired from As Roma the right to the sports performances of the footballer Felix Afena-Gyan”

The Sunyani-born joined AS Roma from Ghanaian based EurAfrica in January 2021 where he had a breakthrough after excelling for the youth team before he was promoted to the senior team by Portuguese gaffer Jose Mourinho.

He was one of the most important players that helped Ghana to book a place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar later this year by eliminating Nigeria in the final play-off round.

Afena-Gyan scored two goals in his 17 appearances for AS Roma during the short stay.

He part of the AS Roma squad that won the maiden edition of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season.

Antony

Man United finally get Antony

Manchester United have reached a provisional agreement with Ajax over the £84.2million transfer of Brazilian winger Antony.

A breakthrough was reached on Sunday with United offering a £80m fixed amount with £4.2m in add-ons, which includes a solidarity payment for Antony’s previous club Sao Paulo. He will sign a five year contract with the option for a further year.

Ajax had rejected United’s offer of £76m on Friday and insisted Antony would not be sold. However, their stance softened following a board meeting and United’s increased offer. They have also revived their bid to sign Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech as a replacement.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Hudson-Odoi to seal loan move to Bayer Leverkusen

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is reportedly set to seal a loan move to Bayer Leverkusen after the Bundesliga side agreed a deal until the end of the season.

The England international has found opportunities hard to come by since overcoming a crippling Achilles injury he sustained last season and Thomas Tuchel has not found room for the 21-year-old after signing Raheem Sterling.

Now Hudson-Odoi is ready to clinch his first ever loan move from Chelsea and is set to fly out to Germany to put pen to paper on a season-long deal, according to Sky Sports.

Sportsmail reported last week how Chelsea and Leverkusen were in talks over the loan – with Hudson-Odoi informed Chelsea he was keen to leave earlier this month in a bid to secure more regular football.

Liverpool make surprise move for Berge?

Sander Berge

Liverpool are eyeing a shock swoop for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge before Thursday’s transfer deadline. The playmaker has caught the attention of Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp and could provide the solution to the club’s midfield injury crisis.

Sheffield United paid Belgian side Genk £22 million for Berge in January 2020 and the Norwegian was a key component in the Blades’ run to the Championship play-off’s last season.

Berge is held in such high regard at Bramall Lane that Sheffield United slapped a £35m release clause on the 24-year-old, but that figure is unlikely to fend off interest from the FA Cup holders, according to the Yorkshire Post.

Cavani set to join Valencia

Edinson Cavani

Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani is on the brink of making his return to club football following his release by Manchester United when he completes a move to Spanish side Valencia.

Cavani spent almost two years at United before leaving Old Trafford when his contract expired at the end of the 2021/22 season and is now set to join the Liga team as manager Gennaro Gattuso begins his first season in charge.

‘When you speak of Cavani, he is not a normal player,’ Gattuso said ahead of Valencia’s hosting of Atletico Madrid on Monday, adding that club owner Peter Lim has been behind the veteran’s arrival. ‘He has played at great clubs and at the top level for a long time. He is 35 but he has an incredible mentality,’ Gattuso said.

Bernardo Silva ‘irreplacable’ amid Barcelona interest

Bernardo Silva

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has pointed to the key contribution of Bernardo Silva after his side came from two goals down to beat Crystal Palace 4-2 on Saturday.

Erling Haaland was the matchwinner with a hat-trick, but it was Bernardo’s 53rd-minute deflected strike that got City back in the game after Palace’s first-half dominance was rewarded through a John Stones own goal and Joachim Andersen’s header.

In a week when Guardiola ruled out selling him to either Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain, Bernardo was the best player on the pitch, once again full of running and invention, dragging City back into the contest and playing a major role in Haaland’s second of the afternoon.

Fofana in US for Chelsea medical

Wesley Fofana

Chelsea have reportedly flown Wesley Fofana out to the US to complete his medical as his move to Stamford Bridge edges closer. Fofana’s switch to the Blues has taken some time to negotiate, with Leicester rejecting multiple offers in recent weeks.

However, the Foxes finally accepted a fee in the region of £70m on Friday, and the 21-year-old centre back arrived Stateside on Sunday to undergo his medical checks, according to The Athletic.

It is understood that Fofana has gone to the east coast of the US to finalise his move to give the club’s owner Todd Boehly further peace of mind after the Frenchman missed seven months of last season with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

Ajax target Ziyech to replace Antony

Hakim Ziyech

Ajax have revived their attempt to sign Hakim Ziyech from Chelsea, who has been targeted as Antony’s replacement.

The Moroccan winger joined the Blues from Ajax for £38 million in 2020 but has since struggled to carve out a regular first team spot in Thomas Tuchel‘s side.

Ziyech has dropped further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the summer arrival of Raheem Sterling, who scored twice in the Blues’ 2-1 win against Leicester on Saturday.

Alongside the ex-Man City star, the 29-year-old is continuing to fight with Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi for a spot in Tuchel’s front three.

Willy Boly boycotts Wolves to force transfer

Willy Boly

Bruno Lage revealed Willy Boly sensationally chose to boycott Wolves’ draw with Newcastle, despite being selected for the matchday squad, in a bid to force a move away.

Wolves last week rejected a bid from Nottingham Forest for the 31-year-old but Lage made plain that Boly, who has been on the bench for the opening three league games, has no interest in remaining at Molineux with five days remaining of the transfer window.

‘He’s been a great professional but he’s trying to force something,’ Lage said.

Asked if the defender will face punishment for his no-show at Molinuex, Lage wouldn’t be drawn.

Internecine War At GIS; Scramble for posts, backbiting rule at state security agency

0
Mr Ambrose Dery, Minister for Interior
Ghana Immigration Service

With the battle lines drawn in the raging destructive inferno at Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) a security analyst has suggested immediate response to the allegations being peddled before the situation gets out of control.

The analyst, Dr Adam Bona, in a telephone conversation with The Chronicle on Saturday, alluded to the fact that a house divided cannot stand, referring to the operational responsibilities of GIS in our fight to wardoff threats from terrorists.

Bystanders who agreed with the suggestion from the security analyst are of the view that the wild allegations, if not responded to by the GIS high command, have the potential to cause havoc amongst the rank and file of the service.

The respected security guru emphasised the need for GIS as a relevant state security body with oversight responsibilities of our borders to resolve the issues internally, since there is the magnitude of exploding beyond control.

He added that happenings in the sub-region with regard to security matters call for unity among our security establishments.

Dr Bona also stressed the need for the supervisory ministry to look into the circumstances, if the service itself fails to act appropriately.

The Chronicle’s attempt to seek official clarification on the ongoing turf war hit a stumbling block, as the assurance from official positions suggest that the service would soon come out to inform the public.

The paper, however, managed to tap information from some concerned senior officers who preferred anonymity, that there is truly a syndicate operating within the service.

It came out that sometime last year, before the Controller General of Immigration (CGI), Mr Asuah Kwame Takyi, could attain the mandatory retirement age of sixty, a letter emerged from a senior management source, requesting the CGI to prepare to handover to a Deputy and proceed on leave, prior to retirement.

When that objective was not achieved, the plot to oust him commenced unabated.

The Spear of the nation, probing further, stumbled on information that a Sector in the GIS is equivalent to a Division in the Ghana Police Service and fall directly under Regional Headquarters.

The Ghana Immigration Service Regulations 2016, Legislative Instrument (LI) 2245 states that DEPUTY COMMISSIONER – The service shall have Deputy Commissioners who shall be responsible for the service in each Region and any other command position determined by the Controller.

The Deputy Commissioner shall be assisted by the Assistant Commissioner who shall be second in command in the region or any other command position as may be determined by the Controller General.

ASSISTANT COMMISSIONERS – The service shall have Assistant Commissioners who shall be second in command at the respective regions, major entry points or any other command position as may be determined by the Controller General.

A Sector per GIS administrative policy is headed by Assistant Commissioner and that any senior officer with this rank in charge of a Region is in acting position until a substantive Deputy Commissioner is appointed to the place.

Being a state Security set up, the searchlight of the National Security never dimmed on these commanders wherever they find themselves, be it in the Region or Sector.

The latest reshuffle of the Assistant Commissioners, the paper gathered was as a result of National Security recommendations for these officers to be reassigned.

The state intelligence agency is reported to have found some of these officers not only continually absent from their duty posts, but also unfamiliar with the operational areas that they supervise and that attitude cannot be countenanced in our present dispensation of terrorist threat.

Ghana Post denies delivering poor services to clients

0
Bice Osei Kuffour, Ghana Post boss
General Post Office, Central Accra

The nation’s postal service, Ghana Post, has called on Ghanaians to help it deliver better services by ensuring that addresses and contact information of recipients of parcels are accurate.

In a meeting with some staff of this paper, the company said their inability to sometimes deliver parcels within stipulated time is mostly due to the provision of inaccurate contact by some clients.

The company said such inaccurate information affects its ability to deliver services within 24 hours and put its competitors ahead of it.

“We always tell our clients to ensure that they provide the correct address and telephone number so that in case we can’t trace your address, we can call you for directions. It is no fault of ours”, Mr Kwesi Owusu-Abrokwa, Chief Commercial Officer of Ghana Post told these reporters, during a meeting that was triggered by our last week Friday’s publication.

The Chronicle had carried a story with the headline, “Ghana Post rebranding a façade”, where it was explained that Ghana Post was delivering poor services to some of its clients.

During the meeting, Mr Kwasi-Abrokwa indicated to the paper that Management of the company was working its socks off to ensure that Ghana Post delivers on its mandate and becomes the preferred postal service provider in the country.

Making specific reference to The Chronicle publication, he said clients who ask them to deliver the letter did not provide the precise location of The Chronicle, hence the delay.

He said one of the mechanisms that have been put in place, as part of the rebranding agenda, is the digitalisation of their operations, which enables a client to track the progress of an item he/she wants delivered until it gets to the final destination.

He said this makes it possible for one to know if an item has been delivered or not.

“We have digitised all our operations so our clients and they can track the progress of their parcel to ensure that the item has been delivered.”

Aside the digitising of their operations, Mr Abrokwa also noted that even when it comes to the delivery of items, their competitors cannot compete with them, because the company always delivers to the doorstop of the recipient, something they (competitors) do not do. He said with other delivery services, one has to usually spend extra money to pick up an item at the delivery point.

“So you see, even in the delivery we are ahead of them. We always deliver to your doorstep. Our competitors do not do that. They only bring it to a point and you would have to either walk or pick a car to go and get your parcel.”

According to the Chief Financial Commercial Officer, this also makes transacting business with Ghana Post much cheaper than with their competitors.

He explained that since most of these services do not do doorstep delivery, clients usually spend extra money in picking up parcels at delivery points, either by themselves or pay courier services to deliver it to them.

“So if you do a critical analysis of the pricing very well, you will realise that sending an item via Ghana Post is much cheaper than sending through other means.”

Other officers who were present at last Friday’s meeting were Madam Sheila Barketey, Mr Theophilus Tei Ayanou, Mr Isaac Marmah and Mr Bernard Yaw Atta-Sonno.
