New York mayor declares emergency over migrant buses from Texas

0
Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams

The mayor of New York City has declared a state of emergency, saying an influx of asylum seekers being bussed into the city each day from the US state of Texas is creating a “humanitarian crisis”.

Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, said during a news conference on Friday that more than 17,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York City since April.

He said the city expects to spend more than $1bn by the end of this fiscal year on housing, accommodation, healthcare and other assistance for the migrants, straining local resources.

“This is a humanitarian crisis that started with violence and instability in South America that is being accelerated by American political dynamics,” Adams told reporters.

“Thousands of asylum seekers have been bussed into New York City and simply dropped off without notice, coordination or care.”

The Republican governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has been bussing asylum seekers to Democratic-run cities  in order to bring attention to the growing number of migrants arriving at the United States’s southern border with Mexico.

Germany probes rail ‘sabotage’ amid Russia tensions

Germany probes rail 'sabotage'

German police were on Sunday probing an act of “sabotage” on the country’s rail infrastructure, with some officials pointing the finger at Russia in the wake of the Nord Stream pipeline explosions.

Important communications cables were cut at two sites on Saturday, forcing rail services in the north to be halted for three hours and causing travel chaos for thousands of passengers.

Rail operator Deutsche Bahn blamed the travel disruptions on “sabotage”, while Transport Minister Volker Wissing spoke of “a targeted and deliberate action”.

Germany’s top-selling daily Bild cited an internal document from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) as saying, in an early analysis of the incident, that an act of “state-ordered sabotage would be conceivable”.

The document pointed to the “widely separated crime scenes” where the cables were severed, in Herne in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia and in Berlin in the east, some 540 kilometres (335 miles) away. The pipeline sabotage further raised tensions between Russia and the West, already sky-high over the Ukraine war, but Moscow denies any involvement in the blasts.

Hong Kong teenagers sentenced in first security case involving minors

Hong Kong judge sentences first teenagers under Beijing-imposed security law

Five teenagers with a Hong Kong group advocating independence from Chinese rule were ordered by a judge on Saturday to serve up to three years in detention at a correctional facility, for urging an “armed revolution” in a national security case.

The five, some of whom were minors aged between 15 and 18 at the time of the alleged offence, had pleaded guilty to “inciting others to subvert state power” through a group named “Returning Valiant.”

Sentences for two more, ages 21 and 26, will be delivered at a later date.

Justice Kwok Wai-kin detailed how the defendants had advocated a “bloody revolution” to overthrow the Chinese state at street booths, and on Instagram and Facebook after adoption of a sweeping, China-imposed national security law.

Kwok called the alleged incitement a serious crime, but nevertheless took into account their “age and immaturity” as he sentenced them to a training center, or detention facility for young people, rather than jail.

The length of stay, capped at three years, is left to correctional authorities to decide.

Musa Kuyateh was one of the 66 children who died after taken the cough syrup

Police in The Gambia have started an investigation into the deaths of 66 children, which have been linked to four brands of imported cough syrup. Senior officials from the Medicine Control Agency and the importers have been called for questioning, the president’s office said.

President Adama Barrow said that the authorities would “leave no stone unturned” in the investigation. Gambians, angry about what happened, are wondering who is to blame.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over the four cough syrups – warning they could be linked to acute kidney injuries and the children’s deaths in July, August and September.

Bereaved parents have told the BBC how their children stopped being able to pass urine after being given the syrups.

Iran state TV hacked during news bulletin

Iran state broadcaster hacked

Iran’s state-run broadcaster was apparently hacked on air Saturday, with a news bulletin interrupted by a protest against the country’s leader. A mask appeared on the screen, followed by an image of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei with flames around him.

The group called itself “Adalat Ali”, or Ali’s Justice.

It comes after at least three people were shot dead when protesters clashed with security forces in new unrest over the death of Mahsa Amini.

Ms Amini was detained in Tehran by morality police for allegedly not covering her hair properly. The 22-year-old Iranian Kurd died in custody on 16 September, three days after her arrest.

Her death has sparked an unprecedented wave of protest across the country. Saturday’s TV news bulletin at 21:00 (17:30 GMT) was interrupted with images which included Iran’s supreme leader with a target on his head, photos of Ms Amini and three other women killed in recent protests.

One of the captions read “join us and rise up”, whilst another said “our youths’ blood is dripping off your paws”. The interruption lasted only a few seconds before being cut off. Such displays of rebellion against Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are historically rare, and he wields almost complete power within Iran.

Russia ramps up security after Crimea bridge blast

Satellite images show smoke and fire following the explosion on the symbolic Crimean bridge

Russia ramped up security on its only bridge to Crimea after a huge blast destroyed sections of it on Saturday. President Vladimir Putin has now ordered the country’s Federal Security Service (FSB) to oversee the key connector to the occupied peninsula.

The bridge is also a pivotal symbol of Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The blast killed three people, Russian investigators said.

Officials said work to fix the damaged sections would begin immediately.

Russia’s deputy prime minister ordered the destroyed parts of the bridge to be taken down immediately, and said divers would begin investigating damage below the waterline on Sunday morning, Russian news agencies report.

Hailed by Russian media as “the construction of the century”, the bridge has been crucial to Russia for the movement of military equipment, ammunition and troops into southern Ukraine.

But new satellite images released on Saturday showed smoke and fire near the collapsed areas of the 19km (12-mile) bridge, which was opened with much fanfare four years after Moscow annexed Crimea.

Since it plays a strategic role in the war, Ukrainian authorities have said it is a legitimate target, as they vow to retake the peninsula.

Home Remedies for Eye Infections: Do they work?

1
Watery eyes

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here’s our process.

Common eye issues

Eye infections can be uncomfortable and even painful. Certain conditions, if left untreated, can become serious.

There are a number of ways your eyes can become infected or irritated. Some common eye conditions include:

pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis

dry eye, which occurs when your tear ducts can’t lubricate the eye properly

blepharitis, a condition that involves the eyelid becoming inflamed and crusted.

styes

keratitis, an infection of the cornea

Fortunately, there are several effective home remedies for eye infections that can help you soothe the symptoms. While these home remedies can help treat eye infections, it’s always best to call your doctor before trying any at-home treatments.

A note of caution

Before using home remedies to treat your eyes, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional. Some eye infections can be serious.

Talk to your doctor if you think you have an eye infection. If you think your child has an eye infection, take them to a doctor instead of trying these home remedies.

  1. Salt water

Salt water, or saline, is one of the most effective home remedies for eye infections. Saline is similar to teardrops, which is your eye’s way of naturally cleansing itself. Salt also has antimicrobial properties. Because of this, it only stands to reason that saline can treat eye infections effectively.

Sterile saline solution can be bought online or from a pharmacy.

  1. Tea bags

Placing cooled tea bags on your eyes while they’re closed can be a way to relax and unwind. Some say that it can be an effective home treatment for eye infections.

Some types of tea have anti-inflammatory, soothing properties. For example, studies have suggested that green tea Trusted Source, chamomile, rooibos, and black tea all have anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, using tea bags on your eyes could be an effective way to reduce swelling.

So far, there aren’t any studies that show how tea bags affect the eyes, or whether they can be used to treat eye infections.

Bear in mind that while anti-inflammatory treatments can soothe the symptoms, an eye infection should be treated at the cause.

  1. Warm compress

If your eyes are sore, infected, or irritated, a warm compress can help. A 2014 study on 22 participants suggested that warm compresses can improve eye health in those with healthy eyes.

A 2012 review of studies showed that warm compresses can help those with blepharitis, a condition that involves the eyelid becoming inflamed and crusted.

In addition, the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests using a warm compress to soothe the symptoms of pink eye.

Warm compresses might be able to soothe styes because they reduce the blockages that caused the stye. They can also help soothe the symptoms of dry eye.

It’s important to note that, while warm compresses might provide relief, they can’t actually cure the condition.

Here are some tips for making a warm compress:

soak a cloth in warm water and apply it gently to your eye

use hot, but not too hot, water so you don’t burn yourself

make sure the cloth you use is clean, so you don’t expose your eye to more germs

  1. Cold compress

Like warm compresses, cold compresses don’t exactly cure eye infections. They can, however, ease the discomfort associated with certain eye diseases. Cold compresses can reduce swelling in the case of eye injuries and infections.

Here are tips for making a cold compress:

soak a cloth in cool water and gently apply it on your eye or eyes

you can also freeze a wet cloth in a sealable plastic bag for a few minutes before using it on your eyes

don’t press down hard on your eye or put ice directly on your eye or eyelid

  1. Wash linens

Wash your towels and pillow cases daily when you have an eye infection, like conjunctivitis. Since these items come in contact with the infected eye, they can spread the infection to the other eye, or cause someone else in your family to develop an infection. Use hot water and detergent to kill any remaining bacteria.

  1. Discard makeup

We all know not to share eye makeup, such as mascara, eye shadow, and eye liner, to avoid things like eye infections. But you should also discard your own eye and face makeup, and makeup brushes, if you used it while you had an infected eye. This ensures that you won’t re-infect yourself.

Featuire: Bawumia – The next to lead for the prosperity of our country and NPP

0
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

There is no denying the fact that in the body politic of our country, the name, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, embodies HOPE and PROSPERITY not only for the New Patriotic Party but for the rest of the country.

It is the name that convinces even the greatest cynics in this world that the Ghanaian dream can become a REALITY. That Ghana can become the cynosure of the world in the area of digitalization, industrialization and economic transformation.

It is the name that convinces the Ghanaian that, some of the difficult things to do in life can be made easy and convenient by a simple click of a computer button or a mobile phone.

That, we can easily transfer money from our bank accounts to our MOMO accounts and the vice versa without visiting the bank. That, we can easily make mobile money transfers from one network to another.

That, we can sit at the comfort of our homes and buy ECG credits with our phones without visiting any ECG vendor.

That we can renew our health insurance subscriptions with our phones without visiting NHIS offices. That, we can visit any location in the country without asking anybody for direction.

Ultimately, it is the name that convinces the Ghanaian that, we can formalize our economy in a manner that makes life easy while at the same time enhancing revenue generation, bolstering the fight against crime and saving the Ghanaian taxpayer millions of Ghana cedis which would have otherwise been lost through corruption and systemic wastage.

In the NPP, the name, Bawumia also personifies party loyalty, commitment, tolerance, sacrifice and selflessness all of which are the very principles underpinning the founding of the NPP.

It would be recalled that Dr. Bawumia is that person who, for love of his party (NPP), left a lucrative job as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, to support the NPP as Running Mate in 2007, at the time everybody was tipping him to become the next Governor of the Central Bank. He only cared about the NPP.

When the Party lost the 2008 General Elections, he remained true and loyal to the New Patriotic Party, one of whose antecedent can be traced to the Northern Peoples Party, a political tradition founded by his biological father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia.

Indeed, the Bawumias have always been rooted in the NPP. They are never strangers. They also remain a significant part of the present day NPP, and will remain a significant part of the Party’s immediate and foreseeable future.

No amount of intimidation and attacks will make Dr. Bawumia even dream of resigning from the NPP unlike others who chickened out from the NPP in the past citing intimidation of their perceived supporters.

Interestingly, today, these same people who sought to leave the Party under the guise of suffering intimidation tell us that they are more loyal to the NPP than Dr. Bawumia. Clearly, the facts do not support their position.

On the contrary, the facts show that, unlike them, Dr. Bawumia’s loyalty to the NPP is unconditional, and cannot be shaken by any occurrence.

In the buildup to the 2012 General Elections, Dr. Bawumia had, owing to his scholarship and industry, been offered several employment opportunities by the World Bank and some top Universities in Europe and Canada.

He however, declined all these big offers just so that he would yet again focus on the NPP’s 2012 election bid.

Dr. Bawumia was subsequently appointed as Running Mate to the then Presidential Candidate.

At the end of the polls, the Electoral Commission declared the NPP as losers. After initial reservations, many NPP members and party kingpins later came to accept their fate. They gave up. But, Dr. Bawumia would not give up.

He was convinced that many things had gone wrong in the elections and that, the NPP didn’t lose the elections.

Dr. Bawumia gallantry inspired the rank and file of the Party to share in his strong conviction. He led the NPP to conduct an intensive audit into the elections and all pink sheets leveraging on technology.

After this exercise, the Party was able to successfully uncover the rigging machinery that was deployed in the elections. Dr. Bawumia who had virtually become a full time employee at the Party Headquarters with no salary, was vindicated.

The Party then mounted an unprecedented election petition. Dr .Bawumia again abandoned all his schedules to become the Party’s Star Witness in the 8-month election petition.

Interestingly, at the time Dr. Bawumia was risking his life and fighting for the NPP in this unprecedented election petition, some of his competitors today, had left the jurisdiction and were busily chasing for jobs at the World Trade Organization.

The petition indeed revealed many of the rots that characterized the 2012 elections. As many as five out of the nine Supreme Court judges upheld at least one of petitioners’ claims.

The five judges that agreed with the Dr. Bawumia-inspired election petition included Justice Jones Dotse, Justice Rose Constance Owusu, Justice Julius Ansah, Justice Anim Yeboah and Justice Baffoe-Bonnie.

It had to take the mathematical ingenuity on the part of the presiding judge, Justice William Atuguba, to declare the petitioners as losers of the election petition, a development many lawyers are still yet to come to terms with.

That notwithstanding, all the nine (9) Supreme Court Judges UNANIMOUSLY agreed with Dr. Bawumia that there were several irregularities with the 2012 general elections.

The point of departure was the extent to which the irregularities impacted the election outcome announced by the EC. Equally, all the nine (9) judges concluded that having regard to the revelations in the election petition, the subsequent conduct of presidential elections by the EC, would not be the same.

Indeed, as a result of this Bawumia-inspired election petition, the EC, taking a cue from the recommendations of the Court, undertook several election reforms making it practically impossible for elections to ever be rigged in this country.

These reforms, coupled with lessons learnt by the NPP from the election petition, was what SET THE STAGE for the NPP’s historic victory in the 2016 General Elections, where the Party won by over a million votes.

Again, in the run-up to the 2020 General Elections, Dr. Bawumia chaired the NPP Manifesto Committee which Manifesto, delivered yet another resounding victory for the NPP in the presidential elections.

The NPP won the 2020 presidential elections with over 500,000 votes, which is the highest margin of victory in the history of the Fourth Republic for a political party seeking a second-term in office.

All in all, Dr. Bawumia has proven to be the biggest revelation and addition to the NPP’s electoral fortunes in the last two decades. He has consolidated the NPP’s support-base among the middle class.

He has delivered the Universities to the NPP. He has delivered his home region [the original Northern Region] to the NPP.

I’m not sure anybody had ever thought the NPP could ever win more Parliamentary Seats than the NDC in the original Northern Region, but it happened in the last General Elections, with the NPP winning 16 parliamentary seats against the NDC’s 15.

This is, of course, largely because of the ‘Bawumia Factor’. In fact, Dr. Bawumia has delivered even the Zongos to the NPP. It is also noteworthy that his emergence in the country’s political landscape has drastically changed the face of our body politic.

He has changed our appreciation of politics from propaganda to facts and data. He is the all-time biggest threat to the NDC’s political fortunes.

Dr. Bawumia is down to earth and trustworthy. He is only focused on getting the job done and delivering prosperity to Ghanaians and the NPP. How much more can a man be a blessing to his Country and Party!

H.E Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, you are indeed a great blessing to the NPP, and to every Ghanaian.

We have all lived and felt your wonderful leadership. Accordingly, on the occasion of your 59th birthday, I gladly join the rest of the World to wish you a Happy Birthday. May Almighty ALLAH continue to grant your heart desires.

Your best is indeed yet to come, and Insha Allah, you shall be the next flagbearer of the NPP, and eventually become the next President of our country. You are, indeed, the ‘THE NEXT TO LEAD’ FOR THE PROSPERITY OF OUR COUNTRY AND PARTY.

Dortmund in dramatic two-goal comeback against Bayern

0
Dortmund in dramatic comeback

It was a difficult night for the record German champions Bayern Munich, who threw away a two-goal lead in the 95th minute.

Bayern led their rivals 1-0 thanks to midfielder Leon Goretzka, who gave the visitors the lead after half an hour. Leroy Sane stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute, unleashing a fierce shot.

17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko set up a dramatic finale when he picked up a Modeste pass to beat Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer in the 74th minute.

Neuer managed to claw away a paltry effort from Anthony Modeste who should have ensured parity in the 83rd minute. Though he would have one last chance to rescue a point for Dortmund, which he duly took, heading in a last-gasp leveler.

The stunning two-goal comeback rescued a point for the black-and-yellow and subsequently Bayern off the top spot.

Tomori on target as Milan beat Juventus

0
AC Milan vs Juventus

AC Milan warmed up for their Champions League rematch with Chelsea by easily beating Juventus at the San Siro. Centre-back Fikayo Tomori smashed in a confident opener.

Winger Brahim Diaz then blitzed the Juve defence to double the lead after half-time.

Tomori had only scored one goal in Italy since joining Milan, initially on loan, but he showed great composure to blast past Wojciech Szczesny on the stroke of half-time.

He needed to, having inadvertently blocked Olivier Giroud’s goal-bound strike. As the ball fell nicely off his body, he drove it high into the net.

Shortly after the break Diaz latched on to a loose pass from Dusan Vlahovic, seared through the Juve defence and fired in off the palms of Szczesny.

Divock Origi could have made it three in injury time but Szczesny was equal to his effort.

Juventus have struggled this season and are yet to win on their travels, but had at least started well, only to be overwhelmed by a resurgent Milan.

This was a very different side to the one that crumpled in London and Tuesday’s Champions League tie is shaping up to be a tasty encounter.
