Arsenal to maintain lead on the league log at Leeds

0
Saka, Arsenal

Before Liverpool and City tussle on Sunday, league leaders Arsenal can extend their advantage at the top of the table with victory at Leeds United, where the hosts are unbeaten at home so far this term.

Arsenal have won eight of their nine league games this season – only in 1903-04 (in the second tier) have they won as many as nine of their opening 10 games to a league campaign.

Goals have flowed for the Gunners too, scoring three in each of their last three league games.

Another improving London side Chelsea travel to Aston Villa, where the pressure is mounting on manager Steven Gerrard following the Midlands club’s disappointing start to the season.

Graham Potter is still new to the coach’s role at Chelsea, but has already overseen better results, with his side having won four and drawn one in all competitions since he took charge.

Manchester United who have enjoyed a mixed start to the season face a tough test on Sunday as they host high-flying Newcastle United, where a win for the visitors will see them climb above their opponents in the standings.

Elsewhere, third-placed Tottenham Hotspur welcome Everton to the capital on Saturday looking to make it three wins in a row in all competitions.

Liverpool find form to reignite blockbuster City clash

Mo Salah, Liverpool

Liverpool’s early-season woes looked to have dented their chances of being able to go toe-to-toe with unrelenting champions Manchester City again on Sunday, but a timely return to form has raised hopes of more breathless brilliance to come.

Last season, two 2-2 draws between eventual champions City and close runners-up Liverpool were both high-quality affairs. Both sides held nothing back, attacking at every opportunity in encounters which swung one way to the other.

The two teams were at the peak of their powers, as City went on to win a fourth Premier League title in five years, while Liverpool, second by a point, won two trophies and reached the Champions League final as they went close to an unprecedented quadruple.

Another thriller in this season’s Community Shield curtain-raiser in August, which Liverpool won, whetted the appetite for another campaign in which these two new rivals would face off for the title.

City have done their part, unbeaten after nine league games, having scored a colossal 33 goals, one point off Arsenal at the top of the standings, but Liverpool have neglected their end of the bargain.

Liverpool scored seven goals at Ibrox against Rangers in the Champions League group stage. Defensive issues still persist, but Liverpool, and Salah especially, could not have picked a better time to find their goal scoring touch.

KMA PM wants licenses of small scale, community mining revoked

0
Patrick Kwame Frimpong, Presiding Member - KMA

Mr. Patrick Kwame Frimpong, Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has recommended the revocation of licences of small scale mining companies as the way forward to stop the galamsey (illegal mining) menace.

The Assembly Member for the Krofrom East Electoral Area has, as well, called for a halt to the implementation of the community mining concept. He further suggested that there should be a holistic approach, backed by law, in fighting the galamsey menace, instead of the piece-meal methods.

He said lack of regulation in this sector had contributed to the woes of stakeholders, hence, the government must ensure that the water bodies and environment are properly managed.

According to the Assembly Member, the three years ban on mining activities in the country, the formation of Operation Vanguard, Operation Halt, as well as other interventions, had not yielded the desired result, hence, the need for the government to restrategise and take the bull by the horns.

Mr. Frimpong indicated that it was incumbent upon the government to take the bold step to revoke these licences and halt operations, while it took pragmatic steps to address the problem, which is eating fast into the social fibre, once and for all.

The Krofrom East Assembly Member said the recommended collaboration of chiefs and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) by the President could not stop the practice, unless the government brainstorms with all stakeholders and adopts a national effort at stopping the adverse effects of illegal mining.

He said the activities of illegal mining had resulted in the formation of sinkholes, contamination of soil, ground and surface water pollution, and loss of biodiversity, thus affected the environment and human life, and stressed that “Ghana cannot look on unconcerned while the water bodies are contaminated to risk the inherent health hazards.”

The Presiding Member said no matter how much revenue the country mobilised from mining, the people would endure health hazards from chemicals and must be stopped before it takes a toll on the human life and the economy.

Mr. Frimpong enumerated the negatives effect of small scale mining and community mining against the background of illegal mining, and said the way to go was to effectively regulate the mining industry along the operational lines of large scale mining.

He said while the large scale mining companies were adopting best practices by regulating their operations, small scale and community miners were degrading the environment without restraint.

According to him, besides the destruction to surface and underground water through toxic contamination and pollution caused by mud and sediments, air and noise pollution and destruction of biodiversity, food insecurity, deaths, injuries, respiratory and skin diseases,

noise-induced hearing loss, physical and psychological stress, malaria, and HIV stare people in mining communities and the populace in general as common legacies of illegal mining.

“Air, water bodies and the environment are being polluted. Schoolchildren are increasingly dropping out of school to engage in illegal mining while teenage pregnancy is on the ascendancy in these illegal mining areas,” he said, and called on the President to take the bold step of  stopping both the small scale and community.

Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo cutting tape to launch the celebration with other dignitaries

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has rejected false claims that the government cannot support the Free Senior High School policy, and used the occasion to assure Ghanaians that the biggest social intervention initiative by any government since independence would not be touched.

“The proponents of expenditure cuts point to the economy and argue that the economy cannot support the Free Senior High School education programme. They argue that cancellation of the free SHS and many others will save the country billions of Ghana cedis that could be invested in better productive areas. I reject as false the argument that our economy cannot support these programmes,” he added.

The Vice President made this known in a speech read on his behalf by the Senior Advisor to the President, Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo, at the opening ceremony of the 2022 edition of the Annual National Education Week in Accra, under the theme: “Re-Assessing Educational Policies for Effective Service Delivery and National Transformation.”

According to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, government continued to contribute to the largest portion of education expenditure, saying that this administration spent on average between 4.5% – 4.6% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and between 17.6% – 24% of its national budget on education from 2019 to 2021.

“The share of government expenditure in education increased marginally from 73.4% in 2019 to 74.0% in 2020,” the Vice President stated.

He suggested that the debate should not be whether our public expenditure was too high or too low, but instead whether or not these programmes contributed to the welfare of Ghanaians and are essential for our national transformation.

He emphasised that the Free SHS promotes access to secondary education, and its enrollment increased from less than 900,000 students in the 2016/17 academic year, to more than 1.2 million in 2020/21.

The deputy Education Minister, John Fordjor, in a brief remark, stated that his outfit had the sole responsibility of contributing to the desired national transformation by recognising the strengths and weaknesses of the current system.

Also, going a long way to prescribe strategies to address the challenges in order to give every Ghanaian child the opportunity to succeed, and contribute to national development in order to give every Ghanaian child the opportunity to succeed and contribute to national development.

For this to be successful, he added that strategic policies must be developed and re-assessed periodically for effective service delivery.

“We, as stakeholders within the sector, need to delve deeper into the various government policies, programmes, and projects within the sector, in order to help shape them to achieve the expected outcome,” the Minister indicated.

The celebration brought together members of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Civil Society Organisations (CSO), Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), students from Accra Girls SHS, Kinbu SHS, Legon Presec SHS, Accra High School, Accra Academy SHS, and many others.

Chrematin Agro organises free health screening in Afram Plains

The Chrematin Agro Company Limited, a private agro-processor and exporter, over the weekend held a free health screening exercise for Akwasi Fanti residents in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.

The move formed part of the corporate social responsibilities of the company. It was undertaken in collaboration with the Holy Spirit Polyclinic, located within the area.

More than 100 persons were screened for Hepatitis ‘B’, malaria, typhoid fever, and also had their full blood count and blood sugar levels checked.

In an interview after the screening exercise, the Physician Assistant, Dr. Abdulai Ali, who led the team of health care givers of the Holy Spirit Polyclinic to screen the beneficiaries, said persons who tested positive for malaria or any other medical conditions were given medications, whiles those whose conditions were severe were referred to the health facility for further investigations to be conducted.

He stated that it was very necessary for the public to be health conscious by adopting healthy lifestyles and going for medical checkup, at least, once every six months.

Some chronic medical conditions, he said, did not present any symptoms at the early stages, adding that this was why a routine medical examination was very important, “because, in many cases, patients only visit the hospital when their conditions have deteriorated, making treatment difficult or impossible.”

Dr. Ali expressed gratitude to Chrematin Agro for the gesture, and called on other capable organisations to emulate the act.

A representative of Chrematin Agro, Mr. Emmanuel Yeboah, on his part, said his outfit embarked on the exercise in efforts to give back to the community. He mentioned that many people resorted to unapproved methods of treating ailments, due to financial constraints therefore, coming out occasionally to help the needy was something the company found necessary.

“We cannot operate here and overlook the needs of the people, so this is one of the reasons why we are providing the free health screening for them today. It will not be the last kind gesture from Chrematin Agro, because we will keep ensuring we add value to the lives of all the needy people we can afford to help,” he added.

According to Mr. Yeboah, plans were far advanced for the construction of a health center and classroom blocks within the area to support the educational and health needs of the people.

He revealed that Chrematin Agro had employed more than 200 workers to man the company’s farms, saying the development had contributed significantly to a reduction of unemployment among the youth in the Afram Plains.

The community members expressed gratitude to Chrematin Agro Company Limited for the generous gesture.
