Biden vows ‘consequences’ for Saudi Arabia after oil output cuts

Joe Biden, the United States president, has warned Saudi Arabia that there will be “consequences” after a global cartel of oil-producing countries led by the kingdom and Russia announced that they would cut oil production despite Washington’s objections.

His remarks on Tuesday come a day after influential Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the US must immediately freeze all cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including arms sales.

Last week, the OPEC+ group said it would slash oil production targets by two million barrels a day, defying pressure from the US.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s top oil exporter, said the decision aimed to stabilise the oil market – not drive up prices – amid interest rate hikes by central banks and the prospects of a global recession.

But critics argued the production curbs raise oil prices globally, which generates more revenue for Russia to continue to fund its war in Ukraine, despite Western sanctions on its economy.

Russia arrests eight suspects over Crimea bridge blast

Russia has arrested eight suspects over an explosion that damaged a strategic bridge linking annexed Crimea to Russia. Moscow regards Saturday’s blast on the Kerch Strait Bridge as a “terrorist attack” organised by Ukrainian secret services.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday that it had arrested five Russians and three citizens of Ukraine and Armenia, Interfax reported.

Explosives were stored in plastic film rolls that left the Ukrainian port of Odesa in August and transited through Bulgaria, Georgia and Armenia before entering Russia, the service said.

The FSB accused Ukraine’s military intelligence service and its director Kyrylo Budanov of organising the attack.

Twelve people were also identified as accomplices, TASS reported. According to the Russian news agency, at least four people were killed in the explosion.

Ukraine has not officially confirmed its involvement, but some Ukrainian officials celebrated the incident.

Rare protest against China’s President Xi before party congress

A rare protest attacking President Xi Jinping and China’s Covid restrictions has taken place in Beijing, days before a historic Communist Party congress.

Images showed two protest banners on a bridge in the north-west of the city. The protest appeared to have been swiftly stopped by the authorities.

Frustration has been mounting in the capital before the congress.

There has been an outpouring of anger online at strict security measures and the Covid restrictions put in place.

Authorities have tightened access to the city, shutting out many travellers, returning residents and deliveries. Others had their movement restricted or were forced to quarantine.

The images and footage of the protest that have been circulating showed two large banners unfurled on a bridge in Beijing’s Haidian district. The week-long 20th Party Congress, due to kick off on Sunday, will see about 2,300 top officials and party delegates descend upon the capital.

China’s leader Xi Jinping is expected to be handed a third term, breaking decades-long tradition and shoring up his already firm grip on power.

UN General Assembly condemns Russia annexation

The United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to condemn Russia’s attempts to annex four regions of Ukraine. The resolution was supported by 143 countries, while 35 states – including China and India – abstained. As well as Russia, four countries rejected the vote, namely Belarus, North Korea, Syria and Nicaragua.

The countries which voted with Russia all have a longstanding stance of criticising Western governments. 19 African countries abstained from the vote. Three of four states that were visited by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in July – Congo-Brazzaville, Ethiopia and Uganda – chose to abstain.

Meanwhile, all four nations that featured on a recent trip by Ukraine’s own foreign minister – Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Senegal – voted at the UN to condemn Russia.

Although symbolic, it was the highest number of votes against Russia since the invasion.

The resolution calls on the international community not to recognise any of Russia’s annexation claims and demands its “immediate reversal”.

Cameroon, Nigeria request to join Ivory-Ghana cocoa initiative

Cameroon and Nigeria requested to join the Cote d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI), a joint body spearheading the interests of the two countries in the cocoa trade, the head of the initiative Alex Assanvo said on Wednesday.

The initiative was set up after a 2018 declaration by Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s first and second-largest cocoa producers, on willingness to define a common sustainable cocoa strategy that would raise prices paid to farmers.

It was created with the view of including other African countries.

Representatives from Cameroon and Nigeria were invited to a CIGCI meeting in Abidjan to begin the process of joining the initiative, Assanvo told reporters after the meeting.

“With Cameroon and Nigeria we are going to represent around two-thirds of global cocoa production,” Yves Brahima Kone, Chief Executive of the Ivory Coast Cocoa and Coffee Council, said at the meeting.

“This will allow us to have more leeway in discussions with the industry on imposing a decent price for our cocoa farmers.”

Morocco Ambassador visits Yendi

Her Excellency Imane Quaadil, Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, is to pay an official visit to Yendi from 15th-18th October, 2022, as part of her diplomatic duties to strengthen ties between Morocco and the people of Yendi.

Her visit follows after some discussions held between the Member of Parliament (MP) for Yendi, Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, and the Moroccan Ambassador on issues of mutual interest, particularly on skills training and other opportunities from Morocco to benefit the people of Yendi.

At the last engagement in Accra, Mrs. Imaane Quaadil expressed her desire to visit Yendi in October, saying that “it will be exciting and great for Morocco to collaborate with the people of Yendi in areas of skills training, information, technical education, and religion.”

Her visit, she said, was to strengthen her country’s ties with Ghana, particularly the ancient town of Yendi, for stronger cooperation.

The Ambassador, on arrival with Alhaji Farouk Mahama in Tamale on today, will drive to the Dagbon Traditional capital, Yendi, to witness the Damba and return to Tamale for a welcome dinner.

On Saturday October 16th, the delegation will pay a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, and Ndan Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II respectively, after which the delegation would move to a Skills Exhibition Center at the Yendi Community Centre.

The delegation will also inspect a Skill Development Center Site, visit Mion, and return to Tamale.

The team, on Sunday October 17th, will pay a courtesy call on the Yagbonwura in Damongo, and visit the Mole National Park Game Reserve.

On Monday, the delegation will also visit the Tamale Technical University, the University for Development Studies, and depart to Accra.

Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, on his part, noted that it had been his priority to create relationships with the international community for the benefit of the people of Yendi that would bring in the necessary support for development in the long run.

He said the objective was to create a sister-city relationship between Yendi and other cities of the world.

Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. — Job 12:7-10

INTRODUCTION

The next time we feel the weight of the world, let’s talk to the One who made the world. As our perception of God grows greater, the size of our challenge grows smaller. If God can sway the heart of a Persian monarch, if He can reverse certain death into victorious life, do you not think He can take care of us?

The story of Esther dares us to believe that God, though hidden, is active. He brings life out of broken things. The apostle Paul was summarizing Esther when he wrote:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. — Romans 8:28

“We know,” Paul said. There are so many things in life we do not know. We do not know if the economy will dip or if our team will win. We don’t always know what our kids are thinking or our spouse is doing. But according to Paul we can be dead certain of four things.

  1. We know God works. He is busy behind the scenes, above the fray, and within the fury. He hasn’t checked out or moved on. He is ceaseless and tireless.
  2. He never stops working for our good. Not for our comfort, pleasure, or entertainment, but for our good. Since he himself is the ultimate good, would we expect anything else?
  3. To do this He uses all things. As in panoramic or panacea or pandemic. All inclusive. God works, not through a few things or just the good things, best things, or easy things, but in all things God works.
  4. He works for the good of those who love Him. Good things happen to those who trust God. The umbrella of God’s providence does not extend to cover the evil and hard-hearted. But for those who seek Him and His will, in all things God works.

 

A puppet in the hands of fortune and fate? Not us. We are secure in the hands of a living and loving God. Our life is a crafted narrative written by the Author of life, who is working toward our supreme good and a sublime ending.

Relief will come. Will we be a part of it?

It seems to me that the entire world is in a state of trauma. People do not know why they were born or where they are destined to go. This is the age of much know-how and very little know-why. The invisible enemies of sin and secularism have left us dazed and bewildered.

The world needs us! We need people with the resolve of Mordecai and the courage of Esther. The world is in desperate need of a people of God who will stay steady in the chaos.

The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation, By Spirit and the Word: From Heav’n He came and sought her. To be His holy Bride, With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

This classic hymn of the faith by Samuel John Stone was an admonition of sorts, a declaration of truth amid a crumbling society.Bombs are still dropped. Worlds still explode. Walls still collapse. Pandemics still rage. But in the midst of it all, the Lord still has His people. And when we proclaim the truth of God in the middle of a crumbling world, you never know who might be changed.

God is in the middle of this. This steep climb. This uphill struggle. This cold, fierce headwind you are facing. You feel overwhelmed. Weary. Ill-equipped to weather it. But lift up your eyes. That is your Father standing on the driveway. He is in this moment with you. Who knows but that you have been chosen for such a time as this?

 

CONCLUSION

HE’S GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HANDS…”; when we sang that song as children, none of us had Job in mind; or suffering; or we’re trying to explain suffering. In fact, it was just the opposite, it was a song of reassurance; a song that all of us are in God’s hands.

If Jesus is our Saviour, we can trust that He will work for our good in the situation that is causing us heartache, pain, and trouble. He loves us. We are His! God the Father has a purpose for our life!

Feature: How Christian Is Ghana?

He taught them how to pray and He did that in Aramaic. In the prayer, which is Awoon, meaning “Our Beloved,” there is this part which prays, “Nehweh Seweeyanakh Akanna Dwashmaya Ap Barah”In direct translation from Aramaic, it says, “Let Be Your Will Even In Heaven Also On Earth.

This is the Our Father, or the Lord’s Prayer as Jesus Christ taught in Aramaic. In that part we pray, “Your Will Be Done On Earth As It Is In Heaven.”

This is a prayer which every Christian knows and prays and that includes the over 23 million Ghanaians who profess the Christian faith. In a country that can easily be declared a Christian State, one is tempted to wonder whether the Ghanaian Christian understands what he is praying, when he prays the Lord’s Prayer.

We ask that God’s Will in Heaven be done here on earth, including here in Ghana, but it looks like the average Ghanaian Christian does not mean what he is praying and for that fact the Will of God seems about absent on this side of the globe.

According to Romans 12:2, “the Will of God is everything that is good and acceptable and prefect.”  This seems absent in this country, because Christians are making sure that it does not become manifest. There are a few reasons.

Environmental Degradation: In Psalm 24:1-2, the Word of God says “The earth is the Lord′s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.”In Genesis 1, God instructed humans to ‘rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground’, and to ‘fill the earth and subdue it’ (Genesis 1:26, 28).

It is the role of humanity to preserve the environment. Genesis 1:27 clearly asserts that God created human beings and this is fundamental to environmental justice which affirms the social and economic right as well as environmental self-determination.

There are approximately hundred verses in the bible that talk about protection of the environment. Numbers 35:33 starts with this straight instruction Do not pollute the land where you are…”The Prophet Isaiah, as if talking directly to Ghanaians of this day and age, had this to say in Isaiah 24:5,

“The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants, for they transgress laws, violate statutes, break the everlasting covenant.” We have a covenant with God to take good care of nature.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew had this to say: “We must treat nature with the same awe and wonder that we reserve for human beings. And we do not need this insight in order to believe in God or to prove his existence. We need it to breathe; we need it for us simply to be.” (Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, 2010).

Unfortunately, here in Ghana, the environment is been degraded with such impunity. And even with H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo coming out with a fiat that illegal and unregulated mining should cease, it looks like most of those who are to make sure that galamsey becomes a thing of the past, after promising the president to carry out his wishes, came out mocking him and making sure that this rot continues.

Today, it looks like we are just about crossing the Rubicon and landing Ghana into the same situation El Salvador faced, before totally banning mining in 2017.

The search for gold has made some people go blank when matters relating to preserving our environment is raised.

The New Patriotic Party, besides self-inflicting divisions within the party prior to Elections 2020, lost most of the galamsey areas, because good Christians there did not understand why they were asked to stopped polluting the land and the water bodies. And yet, they claim they profess Christ.

What is even beyond comprehension, is that our forests and water bodies have been opened up to foreigners to come and use heavy equipment to further do damage to what God decreed we must keep clean and well.

The fact, that our laws prohibit foreign from engaging in small-scale mining is completely disregarded by Ghanaian Christians. And recently, it came to our notice that some immigration officers allowed Chinese illegal immigrants to come into the country and watched them move into our forests to degrade the environment.

Not long after that, Aisha Huang, a Chinese national who Ghanaians were told was deported for illegal mining and shootingdead,full-blooded Ghanaians who dared to trespass into her territory, had been reported to be back and in business.

The Ghanaian Christian community seems unconcerned about what could happen to the natural resources of this country. We find Christians in galamsey in churches yelling and shouting unto the Lord for blessings, graces and providence.

Their pastors make a fortune from offertories from these same people who violate God’s law on the environment. Instead of counselling them to put a stop to their unholy ways, these pastors rather bless them and pray for them so that their works would expand and become very prosperous.

Is Ghana a Christian country? I will suggest that H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo suspends all forms of mining, until the land and waters are reclaimed, by which time, Ghana can come out with better forms of mining including small scale mining.

Gross Extortions: The Lord God is against any form of extortion. In Ezekiel 18:18, the Word of God states, As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity.

Paul wrote to the Corinthian Christians in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit thekingdom of God.”

When the Lockdown was announced Christian traders shouted praising God, for bonanza has come. Before that, the price of sanitizer was increased astronomically because it was one of the very essential items to cut down effects of Covid-19. So was the price of Veronica buckets.

With rush buying, where people flocked the markets to purchase edibles, fresh and processed, Christian traders took advantage and increased prices to make a windfall and huge profits. It was the vulnerable Ghanaian who could not afford stocking his home with provisions, at those ridiculous prices, who suffered. Meanwhile, these Christian traders got on their knees and praised God for good market.

Today, with the world economic crunch making things difficult, the Ghanaian Christian is taking advantage of high cost of fuel. Inflation in Ghana has gone up. The highest ever in recent history was 122.87% in 1983 while the lowest was in 1967 at -8.42%. Today, it is about 39%. Sincerely this should not have been the case.

Christian traders again will go to hinterland at the farm gates and purchase foodstuffs at very cheap prices but once they get them to the markets in the towns and cities, they can increase the prices at more than ten-fold, not 100%, but more than ten-fold. Meaning a tuber of yam which may cost GH¢2.50 at farm gate could go for more than GH¢ 25.00 in the markets in the cities and towns.

This is what Christians are doing to fellow Christians and they watch on as the country is collapsing.

I will recommend that H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in his full constitutional capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, commandeer the military to go into the hinterlands and at the farm gates with their heavy-duty personnel carriers and purchase food stuffs and bring them down to the cities and towns.

I will suggest that articulator trucks could take part in this exercise. They could be parked on motorable roads while the military go through the rough terrains with their vehicles and bring down the foodstuffs to be put onboard these trucksand transported to the urban areas.

I will also suggest that areas are demarcated within the towns and cities where these foodstuffs would be offloaded and sold at affordable prices for consumers. Of course, the market women will come to buy them, but surely, they cannot hike prices, since people will only go to the centers where the foodstuffs will be offloaded and buy them very cheap. In this way, inflation will come down.

Christ is being ridiculed, Christianity is being portrayed as an ungodly religion, leaders of some churches are getting away from acts that violate the moral teachings of the Church and they even go ahead to swindle church members. Meanwhile, they walk free, and go about saying “God is Good,” and when some people complain we are told that “We should not, judge.”

Generally, Christians in Ghana are not making the faith attractive, especially to un-Christians. So, I ask, is Ghana a Christian country?

Relegation-threatened Verona appoint new coach as they host AC Milan

Hellas Verona have named former player Salvatore Bocchetti as their new head coach after parting ways with Gabriele Cioffi, the relegation-threatened Serie A club said on Thursday.

Verona sacked Cioffi on Tuesday after they suffered their sixth league defeat in a 2-1 loss to Salernitana. The club are 18th in the table with five points after nine matches.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Salernitana in their most recent outing, last weekend. Hellas Verona have lost their last four matches and with just one win in their opening nine matches they have suffered a very difficult start to the campaign.

They now face a Milan side that, under the management of Stefano Pioli, were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea in midweek in the UEFA Champions League group stages. Despite that, though, the Rossoneri will be expected to win this one quite comfortably.

Over the previous 99 meetings between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in this stadium, there have been 50 home wins, 22 draws and 27 victories for Barça.

El Clasico undoubtedly brings together the biggest names in the world game. FC Barcelona completed one of the most impressive transfers of the 2022 summer transfer window. However, Barcelona’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages are out of their hands after a frantic 3-3 draw with Inter Milan at the Camp Nou, but Xavi’s side are top of La Liga as they make the trip to face Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season.

On Tuesday, a last-gasp header by defender Antonio Rudiger rescued a 1-1 draw for Real Madrid against Shakhtar Donetsk but the German suffered a nasty gash to the head. He is unlikely to start El Clasico due to the injury he sustained.

Landing the first psychological blow in the race for superiority in Spain is at stake, and with teams level on points separated on head-to-head, the title race could well come down to the finest of margins.
