Napoli display stunning statue to honour Diego Maradona

Unveiled statue with a golden left foot in honour of club legend Diego Maradona

Napoli have unveiled a statue with a golden left foot in honour of club legend Diego Maradona.

The Italian club made an emotional tribute on Saturday, one day before what would have been the 62nd birthday of the iconic Argentine forward, who passed away in November 2020.

Football writer Sacha Pisani tweeted: ‘Fitting, that on what would’ve been Diego Maradona’s 62nd birthday, Napoli are putting on another masterclass. At this stage, it’s not surprising. But after the pre-game tribute, Diego would be proud.’

A giant banner of Maradona was placed on the pitch, with his image filling the screen in the stadium in southern Italy.

Maradona is afforded almost God-like status in Naples, where he helped lead the club to the most successful stint in their history, winning their first ever Serie A title in 1986-87, as well as the Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italia and UEFA Cup trophies.

The diminutive former star, who won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina, also represented Boca Juniors and Barcelona in a glittering career.

After his death, Napoli promptly named their ground after him, retired his No 10 shirt and unveiled a statue – which the newer statue, first unveiled back in November 2021 and displayed again on Saturday, will join.

Varane not ruled out of World Cup after suffering hamstring injury …but faces race against time

0
Raphael Varane

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is awaiting final diagnosis on a hamstring injury threatening his World Cup but early indications are that the problem isn’t bad as first feared.

Varane suffered the injury during the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The France international was visibly distraught as he limped off the field amid fears his hopes of playing in next month’s World Cup were over.

United and Varane are awaiting definitive news on the extent of the injury, but initial tests have shown that the problem is not as bad as originally feared.

If the early indications are verified by follow-up examinations, Varane may still have a chance of being fit for the World Cup, though it is clear he is in a race against time to prove his fitness.

Deschamps has already been hampered with injuries ahead of the tournament, with star midfielder N’Golo Kante perhaps being the biggest omission, having undergone surgery on his hamstring last week.

Several other players are also doubts for Les Blues, including Boubacar Kamara, Paul Pogba, Lucas Digne and Lucas Hernandez.

The omission of Varane would be a huge blow for Deschamps, despite having a high-quality stock of centre backs in the form of William Saliba, Jules Kounde and Dayot Upamecano, who could step up in Varane’s absence.

Pogba will miss Qatar World Cup …picks fresh thigh injury

0
Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba‘s hopes of being fit for the World Cup are over after his agent confirmed he would miss the tournament in Qatar as a result of his latest injury setback.

The French midfielder is set to be out for a further three weeks with a thigh issue suffered in training, according to L’Équipe.

Pogba’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, later said the problem would keep him out of the tournament in the latest blow to France, who have already lost N’Golo Kante to injury.

‘Paul would like to resume as soon as possible but he must be patient, work hard in these difficult times and give the best of himself to be back on the field for the fans and his team as soon as possible,’ Pimenta told Telefoot.

France boss Didier Deschamps had said he will only select players who are fit for their opening World Cup match with Australia on November 22.

Pogba’s chances of making the squad had been hanging by a thread but the latest development confirms he will definitely lose his race against time.

Reports close to the Juventus star said the 29-year-old sustained a new injury while undergoing rehabilitation on an existing knee problem that has meant he has not played a competitive game for Juventus since rejoining the club in the summer.

Pogba had been ruled out for almost two months after undergoing surgery on his right knee in September.

‘Judge me at the end of the season’ -Klopp blasts critics of Liverpool

0
Jurgen Klopp insists it's unfair to judge Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp insists it is unfair to conclude that this Liverpool squad has reached the end of its cycle and says judgement must be reserved until the season ends. Liverpool’s manager accepts his team is under siege at present, with Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds leaving them closer to the drop zone than the top four; Champions League qualification is a minimum requirement for owners Fenway Sports Group and the target is in jeopardy.

It could even be that Liverpool’s best hope of being in the competition next year is by winning this season’s renewal but not even the most ardent fan would be prepared to wager on that outcome being realised in Istanbul next June, given the erratic form they have shown.

Klopp has reiterated his belief will be no quick fix to Liverpool’s issues but, in an impassioned defence of his group, the German stressed they have the desire to keep fighting – and he has not lost his appetite for the battle ahead.

During a press conference ahead of Tuesday’s final group stage clash with Napoli, Klopp gave an answer that was six minutes long and, during the course of it, covered every aspect of criticism that has been aimed at Liverpool.

He said: ‘We are obviously all out there and do the job in public and I think the judgement for this will be later in the season or maybe at the end of the season where we say ok, “obviously now that is it for this group of players or whatever for this manager if you want. The question will be asked then but in the moment it is not 100 per cent fair to judge the team.”

Today’s Uefa Champions League Fixtures & Preview

Darwin Nunez, Liverpool

Napoli aim to maintain perfect record at Anfield

Liverpool must beat Napoli by three or more goals if they are to leapfrog them into top spot in Group A. The visitors, meanwhile, are aiming to maintain their 100% record in this season’s Champions League. With the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain looking like potential group winners, Klopp would love to avoid facing any of them in the last-16 by beating Napoli by three or more goals on Tuesday, but on current form that is a very tall order.

Napoli’s 4-0 victory against Sassuolo on Saturday extended their winning run to a remarkable 13 matches in all competitions, with Luciano Spalletti‘s side appearing to be one of the best teams in Europe this season, at least on current form.

However, with top spot not quite assured for them yet despite being in a strong position in terms of their to head-to-head record with Liverpool having beaten them 4-1 on matchday one, Spalletti will be urging his players to send out a statement by piling on the misery for Klopp’s men.

With Liverpool desperate not to lose for a second successive home match and Napoli will be determined to continue their winning streak, but they may have to settle for a point, we can envisage an entertaining score draw.

MarseilleTottenham  battle for qualification in Group D

With everything still to play for on a tantalising final matchday in Group D, Marseille and Tottenham Hotspur do battle at the Orange Velodrome on Tuesday still vying for spots in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Tottenham are one point clear at the top of the section, while Marseille sit in fourth place but are still capable of upsetting the apple cart and qualifying for the last 16.

Marseille must now endeavour to achieve a feat that they have not done since 2010 – beat an English team in the Champions League. Facing a Tottenham side who have failed to win or score away from home in the Champions League this term spells optimism for Marseille, who simply need to go gung-ho if they are to stand any chance of keeping their Champions League dream alive.

While Marseille’s record against English clubs leaves a lot to be desired, Tottenham have never beaten a French team away from home in any European competition.

Sporting LisbonFrankfurt game goes down to the wire

A place in the last 16 is still a possibility for both Sporting Lisbon and Eintracht Frankfurt ahead of Tuesday’s crunch Champions League Group D showdown at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Sporting Lisbon currently occupy the second and final knockout place in the rankings, with Frankfurt in third but only behind on head-to-head points.

No matter what transpires in the Lilywhites’ showdown with Marseille, Sporting will be in the last 16 if they take at least a point away from Tuesday’s game – their superior head-to-head record over Tottenham and Frankfurt will come into play if all three sides finish on eight points.

Neither side should hold back on the attacking front given what is at stake this week, and Sporting have always looked a threat going forward in Europe this term.

Sporting Lisbon have not exactly defined consistency this season and could still be caught out by a Frankfurt outfit that have had no issues finding the back of the net recently, but with the vociferous home crowd behind them, we expect the Portuguese outfit to progress.

Mane, Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich host Inter Milan at Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will round off their Champions League Group B campaigns with a clash at Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening, with the two sides set to finish first and second respectively.

The home side have won all five of their matches to sit top of the section on 15 points, while Inter have claimed 10 points to secure second, with Barcelona dropping into the Europa League from a tough group.

Bayern’s form in a difficult group has been incredibly impressive, with the German champions winning all five of their matches, scoring 16 times in the process and conceding just twice, which has allowed them to breeze into the knockout round of the Champions League as group winners.

Julian Nagelsmann‘s side beat Inter and Barcelona 2-0 in their first two games in the section before back-to-back victories over Viktoria Plzen, scoring nine times in the process.

Inter also reached the round of 16 last season, losing to Liverpool, but they have not made it past the first knockout round of the European Cup since 2010-11, which saw them eliminated by Schalke 04 in the last eight.

Inter have won the Champions League on three separate occasions, with their last success coming back in 2010, and a victory over Bayern on Tuesday would certainly send out a statement.

Yes, There Are Economic Hardships But: Don’t Dare Staging  A Coup … We Shall Resist It- Citizens’ Coalition Tells The Military

0
Mr Kofi Bentil, member of the coalition and Prof Takyiwaa Manuh, member of the group

The Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Inclusive Governance (Citizens’ Coalition) has reiterated the calls by President Akufo-Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama to the military to respect the constitution and not take advantage of the current economic crisis to seize power.

According to the Coalition members, who are astute academicians and policy analysts, although they want something drastic to be done about Ghana’s dying situation, the military should not stage a coup d’état, as that action would vehemently be rejected by the people.

The coalition’s members, which include; Prof Takyiwaa Manuh, Dr. Asante Pumpuni, Kofi Bentil and Ato Banful said countries in the West African sub-region where the military overthrow their governments have nothing good to show for it, and neither has Ghana’s experience been an exemplary one.

At a press conference in Accra, last week, the group said what they required is an immediate resignation of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta.

Kofi Bentil, in a stern voice, said the president should not allow the constitution to be overthrown and noted that though “there are several musings and suggestions that what we may need is a military coup, it’s never a solution and I think it has been explained here.

And we would like to send this message that if anybody attempts that, we will be the same people to fight you down. We have been there and done that it has not solve any problem. There is nothing that makes a man holding a gun wiser than the one holding nothing.

“We have problems and would work through them constitutionally, which is why we are saying if the President cannot give us enough ideas, there are ways in the constitution to ask him to resign or to force him to resign, either through parliament or through demonstrations.

And like was said here, none of us here is afraid of demonstrations, we have track records in demonstrations but we are going at this properly.”

Prof Takyiwaa Manuhon her part stated that the assumption by some young people that coup d’état is a solution to the current situation should be scrapped, since it has never been a solution.

“A few days ago, some young people were also talking about military coup as a solution, and we are saying that beyond the charter and proclamations, who can convince any of us in this room that anybody in the military has any better solutions to the current situation than all the civilians, etc …I think that it is not the job of the military to be in government.

“So really, I think that we don’t see the military and I believe that there are many people in the military who also don’t see themselves as coup leaders or national leaders. Certainly, they are citizens, they have voices and they are entailed to also have their opinions on what is happening. But the solution is not for them to take over power, we will not advocate it. It has been tried, it did not work. That time is past.”

Ken Ofori Atta Must Go

The Coalition further rehashed a proposition held by a greater section of the public, including both sides of Parliament that, the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta must resign.

“We endorse the call by many citizens, the majority of NPP MPs and many well-meaning Ghanaians who have asked for the dismissal of the Finance Minister and his Deputies. We commend the Majority MPs for taking this important step, as his dismissal or resignation would restore some confidence in Ghana’s financial market. This should be done without delay,” the Citizens’ Coalition echoed.

According to the group, the Finance Minister is under pressure for supervising one of the most dreadful and direful financial difficulties in the country’s history. Kofi Bentil, in particular, said Ken Ofori Atta, on principle, must resign his position and should not lead negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because he never believed in the idea of going to the Bretton Wood institution for a bailout.

 Addressing the economic hardship

Although the Coalition says the government’s response to the economic hardship has been woefully ineffective, they suggested to the president to reshuffle his ministers, reduce the size of government and convene a national stakeholder platform for a discussion and citizens’ buy-in into the medium-term development plan for the country, as well as lay the Code of Conduct for Public Office Holders Bill before Parliament for deliberation and passage.

“As we chart a way out of our economic woes through an IMF program, the government must ensure that whatever agreement will be tabled must be citizen-centered, one that reflects the people’s aspirations,” they suggested.

NDCannuls results of 4 constituencies

0
Daniel Amartey-Mensah, Deputy Director of Elections - NDC

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has annulled the election results of four constituencies of last week’s Constituency Elections held across the country.

The Committee also unanimously dissolved the Regional Elections Committee of the Eastern Region with immediate effect.

The National Elections Directorate has been tasked “to put together a Special Taskforce that will collaborate with the Regional Executive Committee of the Eastern Region to oversee the conduct of elections in the remaining Constituencies in the region”.

A press release, which was signed by the Deputy Director of Elections, Mr. Daniel Amartey-Mensah, named the constituencies as Mpraeso, Atiwa West, Afram Plains South and Atiwa East, which means that elections purported to have been held in these constituencies were illegal and not recognised by the party and, therefore, null and void.

The statement said the elections were largely smooth in most of the constituencies and in accordance with the laid down guidelines.

The Committee, however, expressed concern about the “flagrant disregard by some constituencies for the directive by the Elections Directorate to postpone their elections and took a strong exception to this development, in the light of its earlier admonishment to stakeholders in those constituencies to postpone elections, pending the resolution of some issues”.

It noted that the Committee took serious view of the poor manner in which a few of the constituencies conducted their elections and stated that: “some constituencies experienced challenges like “avoidable delays in printing and delivery of ballot papers, avoidable errors on printed ballots and wilful failure by some constituencies to adhere to directives by the National Elections Directorate”.

The release concluded that, “appropriate sanctions will be meted out to all found culpable in due course,” after a full-scale inquiry into the challenges that were recorded in some constituencies, “relative to the printing and delivery of ballots, as well as gross indiscipline” and flouting of directives of the National Elections Directorate.

TEWU ready to work with new DG of GES

0
Rev. Nicholas Adu-Bekoe – Spokesman

The leadership of the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) have congratulated the Acting Director General (DG) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, on his appointment.

The National President of TEWU, Mr. Ambrose Kwadjodza, who announced this on behalf of the leadership, also pledged to work with the new administration for the betterment of education in the country.

Mr. Ambrose Kwadjodza announced this on Friday when he led the leadership of TEWU to pay a courtesy call on the new DG at the Headquarters of the GES in Accra. The leadership of TEWU used the occasion to highlight a few of their pressing needs that require urgent action from the GES, and appealed to Dr. Nkansah to speedily address these challenges.

The Acting Director General commended TEWU for the visit and assured them of his commitment to facilitate and address the issues they discussed.

“I am here to work with all of you, and I can assure you that I will facilitate and advocate to ensure that all the challenges facing the various pre-tertiary schools are addressed,” he said.

Again, Dr. Nkansah assured them of his readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders in the education space towards the development of education, which serves as a catalyst for national development.

Other TEWU executives who accompanied the President were Mr. Charles Kofi Osei, Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Amaning Kwarteng, Association of Educational Accountants Executive Member and TEWU member among others.

Meanwhile, Sebastian R. Freiku reports from Ejisu-Ashanti that teachers from the basic school through pre-tertiary to tertiary in the Ashanti, Eastern, Central and parts of the Bono  regions constituting themselves into a group have welcomed the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the new Director General for Ghana Education Service (GES).

Rev. Nicholas Adu-Bekoe of the Asanteman Senior High School and Spokesman of the group told newsmen on Saturday at Ejisu that the appointment was good news to the teaching fraternity, and expressed appreciation to the President for the move. The elated teachers hailed the new GES boss, stressing that “Dr. Nkansah is fit and can deliver.”

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have called on the President to rescind the decision to appoint Dr. Eric Nkansah, as the new Director General for Ghana Education Service.

NAGRAT claims that the appointee was unqualified, which position had been endorsed by Dr. Clement Apaak, Builsa South lawmaker and Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament.

The teachers unions say they want a Director General who is a professional teacher and has passed through the mill and could bring his knowledge, skills and influence to bear on the activities of teachers and non-teachers in the GES.

But Spokesman Rev. Adu-Bekoe says it is unfortunate for the leadership of the various teacher unions to have discredited and questioned the appointment of Dr. Nkansah on the grounds he  is not a professional  teacher  and cannot champion the course and interest of teachers. He said one should not be teacher to execute his duty and perform as a Director-General which is purely administrative and a matter of competence.

The group are angered that the leaders had not consulted the membership of the teacher unions before stating their positions on the appointment of the new Director-General of the GES. Rev. Adu-Bekoe stated that the appointment of Dr. Nkansah is not out of place because he is capable of impacting his rich experience and therefore fully support the decision of the President to engage a person from the youthful bracket to lead the GES to seek the welfare

of teachers. The group urged the President to resource the new GES Director-General to deliver on his mandate to uplift the image of teachers.

Ekumfi chiefs ready to assist police in Georgina Asor Botchwey case

0
Nana Akyin addressing the media

The Ekumfi Traditional Council says it stands ready to offer its support in whatever ways possible to assist the police as far as investigations into the charge of murder levelled against Tufuhen Onyaa, who is known in private life as Christopher Ekow Clark Quansah, is concerned.

Mr. Clark Quansah, who is the Tufuhen of three Ekumfi towns, namely, Ekumfi Edumadze, Ekumfi Swedru and Ekumfi Akwakrom, is currently in the grips of the police for allegedly murdering one Georgina Asor Botchwey.

Miss Georgina Asor Botchwey, who was seeking admission to the Ankaful Nursing Training College, was allegedly kidnapped by one Pastor Michael Darko and eventually killed with the assistance of Tufuhen Onyaa.

Addressing a press conference on the alleged crime, the Omanhen of the Ekumfi Traditional Area, Odeɛfo Akyin VIII, who was outside the country when the incident happened, described the alleged crime as serious and heinous.

Odeɛfo Akyin indicated that Tufuhen Onyaa was one of the integral and cardinal traditional elders of the aforementioned three towns, and also the head of all the “Asafo” groups in the said towns.

Following this, he said, the “Traditional leaders in Ekumfi Traditional Area are appalled by the fact that Tufuhen Onyaa is associated with these heinous crimes.”

He, therefore, encouraged the police CID in charge of the crime to “leave no stone unturned to get to the core of this serious heinous matter to ensure that justice is served as per the laws of this our beloved country Ghana”.

Alleged crime was committed in his private capacity

Lamenting further about the alleged heinous crime, Odeɛfo Akyin indicated that the embattled Tufuhen allegedly committed the crime in his private capacity and that his traditional role had absolutely nothing to do with it.

“We should all be reminded that whatever crimes that TufuhenOnyaa has himself said to have committed were done in his private capacity as an individual but not because he is a Tufuhen in the Ekumfi Traditional Area,” he explained.

Application of traditional customs

The paramount chief acknowledged the fact that the case was pending before a court of competent jurisdiction and therefore, exercised high level of circumcision so as not to undermine the investigations as well as the trial.

He, however, assured that “The Ekumfi Traditional Council will wait for the final determination of the culpability of Tufuhen Onyaa at the court of law before applying the customs and traditions regarding his traditional position”.

Condolence to the grieving family

Speaking to the issue in public for the first time, Odeɛfo Akyin, on behalf of the traditional council, sent a message of condolence to the family of the late Georgina Asor Botchwey who was allegedly murdered by her trusted pastor and Tufuhen Onyaa.

He said: “To all the grieving families, we hold you close to our thoughts at this sad and heartbroken moments. On behalf of the Ekumfi Traditional Council, please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences.”

Editorial: Is the GHA aware of the destruction being caused to our roads?

0
Editorial

One of the major problems confronting the Akufo-Addo government today, and as a matter of fact, any government that will come to power in future, is the roads sector. The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, told journalists in April, this year, that the total roads network in Ghana, as at the end of 2021, was 94,203km.

These comprise of 14,948km of trunk roads; 50,777km of feeder roads and 28,480km of urban roads. Out of this number, the Minister said, the current government had constructed 10,875 kilometres since it assumed office in 2017.

Though constructing 10,875 kilometres of roads in five years is no mean achievement, it is still a drop in the ocean. Thousands of kilometres of roads have still not been constructed, and the citizenry seem not to be happy with the situation. But, can we blame the government for this shortfall? The answer, in our opinion, is both yes and no. Yes, because it is the responsibility of the government of the day to ensure that these roads are constructed, and no, because the resources of the country can simply not allow the omnibus construction of all these roads.

Road construction is capital intensive, and looking at the size of our national economy, no government can simply get up and construct all the roads in the country. That is the reason why the roads we are able to raise funds to construct must be taken good care of. Unfortunately, this is not the situation. Apart from some of our urban dwellers connecting their sewerage systems to asphalted roads without caring a hoot about the danger it portends, construction firms are also destroying some of the existing roads with careless abandon.

About two or so years ago, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, through the Ghana Highways Authority, claimed to have met construction firms in the country and warned them to stop depositing concrete materials on urban roads. This followed protests by road users that trucks carrying concrete to construction sites deposit some of the materials on the roads, thus make it very difficult for vehicles to ply them.

In Accra, this reckless conduct was common on the Tetteh-Quarshie Interchange to the Madina-Adenta road. Though the practice stopped for a while, it has now raised its ugly head again, with increasing volumes of these concrete materials being deposited on the road. As we had earlier indicated, road construction is capital intensive, therefore, to allow a small group of people or companies to destroy these paved roads is a serious matter that must not be swept under the carpet.

It appears to us at The Chronicle that if the threat issued by the Ghana Highways Authority is working at all, the punishment meted out to the erring drivers or companies involved in the act is not punitive enough to discourage them from committing the crime. The Chronicle is, therefore, calling on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to come out with stringent measures to address the problem.

Thanks to the National Security, there are surveillance cameras on all the major streets in Accra and our regional capitals. This means finding drivers or companies who are causing this mess will not be a difficult thing to do. Much as these concrete carrying trucks have the rights to use the roads, they cannot use it as an excuse to destroy the entire road.

Already, the education and health sectors of our economy is ‘swallowing’ the chunk of our budget, but if in the midst of these difficulties we still manage to squeeze water out of stone to construct roads, then the latter must be protected to last for a long time.

Apart from the destruction being caused to the roads, it is also easy for vehicles to somersault because the surface of the road is not even. Should we, as a country, wait for blood to be spilled before we wake up from our slumber to rein in these recalcitrant drivers?

The Chronicle is certainly waiting for the action that will be taken after this publication. We shall surely return to this subject if nothing is done to stop the practice.

The Ghanaian Chronicle
