Covid in China: Officials say current wave is ‘coming to an end’

0
China has been in the grip of a major Covid wave since restrictions were lifted in December

Chinese health officials say the country’s current wave of Covid-19 infections is “coming to an end”.

The number of severe Covid cases and deaths is trending downward, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report.

It also said there had been “no obvious rebound” during Lunar New Year holidays last week, where millions reunited for family gatherings.

There have long been questions raised about China’s Covid reporting.

But experts say the decline reported now corresponds with the expected timing of an end to this major wave.

The virus tore through Chinese cities and towns after authorities lifted zero-Covid restrictions in December. However fever clinic visit rates have dropped over 90% through January and hospitalisation rates are down over 85%.

Fears that the virus could surge again during the festive period have also not yet been realised.

In its report, the CDC said: “There has not been an obvious rebound in Covid cases during the Lunar New Year holidays.

“In this time, no new variant has been discovered, and the country’s current wave is coming to an end.”

It also reported a sharp decline in the daily Covid death toll reported by hospitals – from a peak of 4,300 deaths on 4 January to 896 deaths on 23 January.

Infectious diseases expert Hsu Li Yang told the BBC: “This drop in deaths follows the decline in the first huge wave of cases after China relaxed its restrictions, which is understandable and has been seen in virtually every country experiencing a large Covid wave.

Feature: A CALL TO ALL FAITHS

0
Feature

The time has come for prelates of ALL FAITHS to assemble together to examine the Future of Ghana in the Present. For, the politicians and the economic management teams of the Dukadaya have failed and betrayed the nation by corrupting every aspect of national life and polarising society along tribal lines.

Has the Dukadaya rule, since 1992, not corrupted Our Father’s House and turned it into a den of gamblers and criminals who play roulette with the God-given natural resources and play musical chairs with the fate of Ghanaians? And I believe Faith Leaders behold, with trepidation, this state capture by the few, for the few and to the glory of the few.

There is distress and suffering in the land. CORRUPTION, TRIBALISM AND SEXISM have infested every aspect of national life because of perfidy in the exercise of state power by the executive, legislature and judiciary. In short, these three arms of government have armed themselves in a joint-criminal enterprise to “create, loot and share” without care.

The state and spate of corruption is not helped by the gaping sycophancy of their children with sharp teeth like locusts who parade the corridors of power as the fourth estate – the press and media.

The time has come for the Church, Mosque, Synagogue and the Shrine to stand up and demonstrate, in deed, that Faith Matters in nation-building and that Faith has a social purpose. The poor, the disadvantaged, the abused, the exploited, the denied and the debt-burdened are crying for redemption.

Yes, redemption from the looting, opulence and arrogance of the ruling elites of the NDC and NPP (bothwhom I have branded as DUKADAYA – two sides of the same counterfeit note whose value is the same). The Dukadaya have become an alienation, so insensitive to the wailings of the rest of society. The Fourth Republic has become a “family and friends” republic of A LOOTING CONTINUA.

A prosperous and flourishing Ghana cannot be built on deceit, lies, selfishness and licentiousness on the part of the leaders who govern to satisfy sectional interest instead of the national interest.

For Ghana to flourish in prosperity the Dukadaya corruption that has desecrated Our Father’s House and the inner temple must be cleansed. What Ghana needs now is a theology that is cleansing, a theology that is redeeming, a theology that is liberating. A LIBERATION THEOLGOY IS NEEDED.

Corruption is an insult to the Majesty of God and in particular executive-sponsored poverty and underdevelopment in a nation so richly endowed with natural resources. When such a situation develops it is as a result of the absence of governance and a leadership with moral compass.

Governance connotes duty of care. However, in Ghana, the Dukadaya simply do not care. They only pay lip-service to “probity and accountability”.  And this is what happens when governance becomes a joint-criminal enterprise.

I call on prelates of ALL FAITHS to assemble together to examine the state of Ghana in relation to the economic, social and political importance of theology in rescuing Ghana from the vice and stranglehold of the Dukadaya; for the prevailing state and spate of corruption is an affront to the Majesty of God.

Our Father’s House must be cleansed of the dehumanising acts of unbridled corruption, tribalism and sexism. How can there be witch camps in Ghana where females are condemned to a life of humiliation, trauma, abuse and impoverishment while males dominate decision-making and those of the Abrahamic faiths dominate the wheels of government?

The Prelates must assemble as a matter of urgency to examine, pray and seek direction and action in a theology that is liberating in its social purpose. The prelates have a duty of care to assemble together to hold the nation together as presently there is no centre holding the nation together. Disorder is now ordering the nation.

Everybody does what they like in the face of the law. Who is in charge? The Dukadaya who “create, loot and share” without care? The Church Must Care! The Mosque Must Care! The Synagogue Must Care! The Shrine Must Care.

Faith counts. Faith matters in nation-building like loyalty and honesty. An assembly of ALL FAITHS in the name of truth and redemption is an Assembly of God’s calling.

Theology is the prop of life and living. That is how the Akan faith expresses TWIEDUAMPON. The One that does not uproot when leaned on. The All Dependable that one can lean on.  The Reliable One that does not fail.

Theology in instruction and praxis must be liberating.

*Akyaaba Addai-Sebo was formerly the Special Peace Envoy of International Alert. He facilitated and brokered peace between warring factions first in Liberia and then Sierra Leone to help bring both wars to an end.

An anecdote here would suffice: “Deep in the forest region of Sierra Leone, I recall an encounter with a fifteen year old armed combatant. I asked him why he had taken to arms.

He held my hands and asked me to follow him, which I did. He took me to a clearing where the landscape was littered with yellow digging machines and broken down caterpillars. The rain filled craters and despoiled landscape showed an abandoned mining site.

The young rebel soldier, almost in tears, explained that the area was their family farmland. Politicians from Freetown had come to hoodwink their grandfather with a thousand US Dollars and a whole load of promises for access to the farm. Eventually the family was pushed off the farm for intensive alluvial mining to take place.

The grandfather and father died of grief and government vigilantes (sobels) raided the area killing his mother and three siblings. He was the only one who managed to escape. He decided to join the rebels to “liberate” the land.”

Galamsey is causing a lot of grief in the forest and savannah regions of Ghana. These early warning signals and especially the despoilment of Mother Earth must not escape the attention of religious leaders.

A roundtable dialogue needs to be organised for religious leaders to deliberate on their Faith and The Future of Ghana In The Present. The Call has been made and yours is to answer and spread the wordin a new pastoral language of redemption and liberation.

Andre Ayew

Ghana captain Andre Ayew has been linked with a return to Europe, with his boyhood club Marseille reportedly interested.

The 33-year-old is free to join any club after reaching an agreement with Al Sadd to terminate his contract, which was set to expire in June.

The French giants want to reunite with one of their fine products. They want Ayew to return to France to finish his career.

Ayew has also been linked with Al Sadd’s bitter rivals Al Rayyan, who are said to have made contact with the forward and are willing to make a big offer.

Former Spain international Xavi Hernandez, who now manages Barcelona, had a big influence on Ayew’s decision to join Al Sadd.

We didn’t deserve to lose -Annor Walker on defeat to Niger

0
Black Galaxies head coach, Annor Walker

Black Galaxies head coach, Annor Walker, says his team didn’t deserve to lose to Niger in their fixture at the ongoing African Nations Championship in Algeria.

Ghana suffered a shocking exit from the tournament following a 2-0 loss to Niger in the quarterfinal on Saturday, January 28.

The loss was the second the team had suffered in three games at the CHAN 2022 tournament after the opening game defeat to Madagascar.

Following the exit, Walker said his side deserved better from the game against Niger and didn’t have to be on the losing end.

“When they (Niger) got an early goal, it gave them more determination and, on our side, it demoralized us…and when we conceded the second goal, we struggled to come back and eventually lost,” he said in his post-match presser.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose,” he added.

Elimination from the competition sees Ghana’s chase for a first CHAN title hit another snag after failed attempts in their previous three appearances.

Niger also progress to the semi-final where they face hosts, Algeria.

TRANSFER NEWS: Man City’s Cancelo on shock loan to Bayern, Chelsea prepare final Enzo Fernandez bid

0

Man City Cancelo set to join Bayern Munich on loan

Joao Cancelo is set to leave Man City and join the Bundesliga champions in a loan deal that will include an option to buy for £61.5m.

Cancelo was named in the PFA Team of the Year last season but has quickly fallen out of favour in Pep Guardiola’s side recently. Just like everyone else, we’re still trying to make sense of Man City’s decision to sell the two-time PFA Team of the Year candidate.

However, it’s come to light that Cancelo had been vocal over a lack of game time recently, as his relationship with Pep Guardiola progressively deteriorated after the World Cup.

Chelsea make £105m bid for Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea have reportedly made an £105million bid for Benfica star Enzo Fernandez in a deal that would make the midfielder Britain’s most expensive footballer.

The Blues have been in pursuit of the Argentina international all window and are closing in on the potential signing after meeting Fernandez’s buy-out clause.

Everton make £40m Conor Gallagher approach

It seems the Anthony Gordon money is being put to use already! Everton have submitted a bid to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.

It’s a £40m proposal plus £5m in add-ons but Chelsea will wait to consider the offer amid interest from a number of Premier League teams. Player wants to stay at Chelsea but could be told he’s got to go.

Sean Dyche confirmed as new Everton boss

It’s official! Sean Dyche has been appointed as the new manager of Everton – and will take up the fight to save them from relegation immediately.

The club confirmed the appointment on Monday with Ian Woan and Steve Stone becoming assistant coaches at Goodison Park.

Dyche, whose first game in charge will be at home against league leaders Arsenal in the top flight on 4 February, said in a statement it was “an honour to become Everton manager”.

Mosquito lets the cat out of the bag; Why Haruna, Muntaka Were Fired

0
Mr Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has disclosed that changes were made to the party’s leadership in parliament because they were “not cooperating with the Speaker of Parliament.”

The rather shocking revelation is in sharp contrast with his earlier explanation. Asiedu Nketiah in an interview hours after the news broke about the widely criticised decision, said the change had nothing to do with the capacity of the trio, but had everything to do with the reorganisation of the party from the grassroots.

He further defended the change, saying the 2024 election campaign will focus on the economy and as such, the party needed a leader with that background to lead its front in parliament.

As a result, the NDC dumped Haruna Iddrisu for Ato Forson.

Another excuse Asiedu Nketiah gave was regional balance. He claimed the party needed to have all regions represented, some way somehow, thus the changes.

However, addressing party supporters in the United Kingdom over the weekend, Asiedu Nketiah told a different story.

He said his aim is to see the parliamentary caucus working together and also cooperating with the Speaker of parliament.

“Why did we struggle to get an NDC person elected as a Speaker of parliament? There are certainly some advantages, those advantages can be tapped into when your leadership cooperates with the Speaker. So we cannot have a situation where NPP leadership is cooperating with the Speaker and our NDC leadership have challenges cooperating with the Speaker.

“And if you are given a party whose leadership and parliament is not working together, what will you do?  You make the changes or you resign and I’m not about to resign. Thank you,” Asiedu Nketiah revealed, whilst answering a question.

EXCUSE REFUTED

It was not surprising that the excuse of an Economist leading the parliamentary caucus was refuted by many. Political analysts have argued that if an Economist should lead the charge in parliament, then it would be prudent for an Economist to be elected the flag bearer.

This position may not be supported by supporters of John Mahama, a presumptive aspirant, because it will favour Dr Kwabena Duffour, who has already declared his intention to contest.

Meanwhile, the former Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has challenged the National Chairman and the other officers to name the elders who were sent to talk to them about the change.

Though he threw the challenge last Thursday, he is yet to have a response.

AfCFTA to eliminate 97% of tariffs on goods traded in Africa –Prez

0
President Akufo-Addo, AFCFTA president and Minister Samuel Jinapor at the conference

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) will eliminate 97% of tariffs on goods traded on the continent, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has disclosed.

This, according to him, is to remove barriers that may hinder the growth of intra-Africa trade, the very idea behind the AfCFTA.

“The AfCFTA will eliminate tariffs on 97% of traded within the African continent, offering significant opportunities for businesses to setup and expand in Africa,” he observed.

He, therefore, encouraged businesses to take advantage of the AfCFTA to boost their trades and spread within the continent.

The President was speaking at the closing of the 3-days’ summit called the African Prosperity Dialogue, held in the Eastern Region last week.

 ALL ON BOARD

He emphasised the need for the 44 African Union member states, which have already rectified the AfCFTA agreement to work to have the rest on board, especially as their people form part of the 1.3billion single market the continent provides.

“It is encouraging to note that as of November 2022, 44 AU member states have rectified the AfCFTA agreement. It is a strong evidence of great political will and commitment by the leadership on the continent to achieve market integration in Africa, and it is our duty to engage to ensure the full participation of all member states,” he stated.

Also known as the Kwahu Summit, the dialogue had brought together political and business leaders to discuss the prosperity of Africa with a focus on the AfCFTA.

The forum, which birthed a policy document to be submitted at the upcoming African Union summit, was on the theme “AfCFTA: From Ambition to Action, Delivering Prosperity through Continental Trade.”

SENSE OF URGENCY

Touching on the theme, President Akufo-Addo, who was proposed by the summit to be the AfCFTA Champion, called on the continent to work together with a sense of urgency to grab the prosperity of the people. Proffering a means to meeting the above, he cited that AfCFTA presented an opportunity.

“We in Africa must with a sense of urgency work together to guarantee the economic security and secure the prosperity of our peoples,” he opined.

“To accomplish this shared objectives, African political and business leaders as well as other strategic stakeholders should use the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA and agreement to boost intra-African trade, in order to enhance the productive capacity and strengthen its resilience to external shocks,” he added.

He was passionate about the need to stop what he described as “systemic impoverishment” of the continent and the theft of its resources, through technological advancements.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated his call on the need to institute measures to unambiguously combat illicit financial outflows from Africa estimated at about $88billion annually, “depriving Africa of significant resources that could be used in support of our developmental agenda.”

OWN AFCFTA

The caretaker Minister of Trade and Industry, Samuel Abu Jinapor, welcoming delegates and guests to the day three of the Kwahu Summit, urged the private sector to own the AfCFTA.

He told them to do so by continuing to work with governments across Africa to ensure its full implementation.

He said the advancement of intra-continental trade would mean private businesses can expand their markets, and venture into new territories, which were previously inaccessible to them.

“Africa can, and will unleash prosperity for its peoples,” he added.

Jinapor said for the continent to progress ” …[we must] promote a free society, anchored on democratic principles and the rule of law, including an independent judiciary, to adjudicate disputes between the state and private citizens as well as among citizens; for without an independent judiciary, investors will have no confidence to invest in our countries.”

DIGITAL ECONOMY

The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, on his part wanted the dialogue to be situated in the context of the prevailing economic situation in Africa and beyond.

However, he advised the forum should not make a fundamental mistake of assuming that the knowledge-based digital economy was a thing of the past.

His reason was that Africa was at a critical stage in its development trajectory with a population of 1.3billion, which comprised about 600million internet users, a number he said had more than doubled since 2015.

According to him, the digital economy is here to stay, as “the numbers support this assertion.”

The Finance Minister was not oblivious of the fact that it is not just the fiscal and monetary interventions of governments in the macro economy that will steer the continent out of the storm, but the penetration of technology and entrepreneurial innovation by established businesses and young start-ups. Also, governments’ commitment to digitalisation and technological innovation as a policy priority.

AFCFTA ACHIEVEMENTS

Reiterating the theme, ‘AfCFTA: From ambition to action’, the Secretary General of the AfCFTA, Wamkele, listed some achievements of the last two and half years.

The Secretariat has established a new regime for trade in Africa and now have all the legal documents required for commercial and meaningful trade to take place.

The AfCFTA has an electronic tariff book, rules of origin manual, “which enables our traders, our economic operators to determine with certainty the harmonized rules that apply to them if they seek to trade across regions of our continent.”

He said the Secretariat has also established the pan-African payment and settlement system along with our strategic partner, Afriexim bank.

He said it was the intention of the AfCFTA that with the introduction of the pan-African payment and settlement system any trade from any part of the continent could trade in their local currency without challenges of cost of currency convertibility.

THOSE BEHIND KWAHU SUMMIT

The Africa Prosperity Dialogue, otherwise known as the Kwahu Summit, was organised by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN).

APN, a Ghanaian indigenous company, partnered with the AfCFTA Secretariat, the government of Ghana, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-Africa), the Africa Prosperity Fund, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), the Economic Commission for Africa and the Africa-America Institute to organise the maiden edition of the Africa Prosperity Dialogue, the first of what will be an annual dialogue.
