Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Western Regional Minister

A health screening conducted on 1,000 women by the Holy Child Family Hospital in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis revealed that 30 percent has precancerous lesions.

The screening also found some of the women having inflammation of the cervix, mass or growth in the uterus and leukoplakia, a health threatening condition in women.

Ms Anita Obeng Andoh, a Public Health Specialist with the Holy Child Family Hospital, said this during the launch of the World Cervical Cancer awareness month on Saturday, on the theme: “Capacitating Today’s Women as an Instrument in Combating Cervical Cancer.”

She, therefore, encouraged every woman to screen for the condition to help in early detection and preventable deaths.

The Hospital, since the start of the Cervical Cancer project, had worked on more than 3000 patients to know their status, get vaccinated and plan their treatment.

Dr Barbara Fenyi, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, said sexually risky behaviours and douching were some of the risk factors.

She expressed worry over the practice of anal sex, which was becoming a public health issue, adding; “Having sex backdoor increases the risk of cancers.”

She, therefore, charged health workers to lead the crusade through counselling, encouraging women to get screened and vaccinated.

The Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, called for strengthening of community system and efforts to eradicate the disease in line with WHO’s directive and the Ghana Beyond Aid Agenda.

“I pray that more women will get involved as we the men will always lend the support”.

Reverend Father Francis Aidoo, Western Regional Director, Catholic Health Services, pledged the church’s commitment to contributing to quality health management systems to save lives and restore hope to humanity.

Muritala Shehu, PDP candidate

The Court of Appeal has dismissed the verdict of the Federal High Court Katsina which nullified the primary election that produced Muritala Shehu as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Malumfashi/Kafur Federal Constituency, Katsina State.

Murtala filed the appeal against the decision of the Federal High Court Katsina, which on November 23, 2022, nullified the primary election in which he emerged as winner against Nasiru Sa’ad Ahmed.

In a unanimous decision delivered on the 27th of January, 2023, the Court of Appeal set aside in its entirety the judgment of the Federal High Court, affirming the PDP primary election conducted for Malumfashi/Kafur Constituency and declared Muritala Shehu who scored the highest vote as the House of Representatives candidate for the party.

However, the appeal was heard on the appellant’s brief of argument only, as the respondent, Nasiru Sa’ad Ahmed did not file anything before the court to defend the appeal until he was out of time to do so.

Reacting to the judgement, Katsina PDP Legal Adviser, Barrister, Mahutta Mustapha, said: “The judgement represents the true position of the PDP primary election conducted on 22 May, 2022 wherein the appellant, Murtala Shehu emerged the winner.

“It also represents the true wish of the delegates from Malumfashi/Kafur Constituency who voted for Murtala Shehu wherein he had 34 votes in the primary election, while his opponent had 29 votes.”

He added that, “certainly, cases between members of the party do not result in anything beneficial to the party. They should unite and support whoever emerges.”

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has cancelled the charging of levies by Parent Teachers’ Associations (PTAs) of public schools.

The Governor said on Monday that such levies ran against his government’s free education policy.

The Governor who spoke at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Secretariat in Yola where he addressed CAN officials and church leaders from across the state, stressed that he could not condone PTA levies when his government is running a free education scheme.

He said, “Education is free here. I can’t tolerate a situation now where PTAs fix charges. We came to relieve parents of the burden of paying fees and we don’t want anything that sounds like fees by some other name.”

The Governor said he was taking steps to stop the indiscriminate charging of levies under whatever guise because it runs contrary to his free education programme.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who was at the CAN Secretariat for interaction with the CAN officials and other Christian leaders, said his measures to assuring security for all have improved religious harmony, among other things.

Speaking earlier during the event, the state chairman of CAN, Bishop Dami Mamza, said Christians in the state were committed to the unity and development of the state.

Mamza, also the Catholic Bishop of Yola, said, “CAN has the vision of a just and prosperous state where everyone will enjoy equity. We seek the building of a better Adamawa State for the good of all.”

Court dismisses suit seeking Buhari’s sack

President Muhammadu Buhari

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday dismissed a suit by a former presidential candidate of Hope Democratic Party, HDP, Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru, against the election of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2019 presidential election.

The suit seeking the outright sack of President Buhari was thrown out by Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo on three major grounds.

Parts of the grounds are that the suit constituted a gross abuse of court process, statute barred and was an affront to the supremacy of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Besides, Justice Ekwo held that the suit was baseless, frivolous, irritating and vexatious in its entirety.

Presidential candidate in the 2019 election on the platform of the Hope Democratic Party (HDP), Ambrose Albert Owuru instituted the legal action against Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Among others, the Presidential candidate wants the court to determine the legality or otherwise of INEC’s decision in 2019 during which it shifted the election from February 16 to March 23, 2019.

He claimed that INEC acted against the constitution in illegal and unlawful ways and manners the presidential poll was shifted and the declaration of Mohammadu Buhari as a winner of the unlawful act should be declared null and void and of no effect.

“A comprehensive exit arrangement is being developed together with the Ghana Police Service and it will be rolled out soon.”

Mr Quarshie urged the CPAs to go out to be good ambassadors of YEA and the Ghana Police Service. He assured the CPAs of the Agency’s readiness to provide them with all the support that they required to offer dedicated and professional service to the country as Community Policing Assistants.

Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, who reviewed the Parade commended the Assistants on undergoing the basic Police training to effectuate the opportunity of serving the good people of Ghana for the next two years.

South Africa is one of the world's most coal-dependent nations

South Africa is one of the world’s most coal-dependent nations

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has said there are no plans to immediately abandon coal-fired power stations during a proposed transition to cleaner forms of energy.

The country is one of the world’s most coal-dependent nations and is a significant polluter.

It is currently experiencing lengthy power cuts blamed on ageing infrastructure and corruption.

Since 2021 South Africa has secured several billion dollars in international loans and grants to support a switch to greener power.

Addressing colleagues from the governing African National Congress (ANC) party, Mr Ramaphosa suggested it would be unwise to reduce the country’s capacity as it made what he called a just energy transition.

The ANC has close links with the country’s mining unions.

The teacher worked at Fettes College in Edinburgh in the 1970s

A former teacher accused by BBC presenter Nicky Campbell and others of abuse at schools in Edinburgh has appeared in court in South Africa.

The 83-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with indecent assault and committing an indecent act with a minor at a boys primary school in Cape Town in 1988.

The man, known in a BBC documentary as “Edgar”, has denied claims against him.

He was released pending a further hearing.

The former teacher agreed to surrender his passport to police.

He appeared at Wynberg Magistrates Court in Cape Town on Monday after being arrested and taken by an officer to a police sexual offences office with his lawyer.

Broadcaster Campbell is one of several former pupils who have made allegations relating to the man’s time teaching at Fettes College and Edinburgh Academy in the 1960s and 1970s.

“Edgar” admitted abusing young boys while teaching at Fettes College and Edinburgh Academy, according to South African court documents seen by the BBC, although his legal team subsequently insisted that he denied the allegations.

He also denies molesting students after moving to South Africa to teach at a prestigious boys school in Cape Town.

The former teacher is currently fighting extradition from South Africa to the UK.

The authorities in Cape Town approved an extradition request in 2020 but the process has been delayed by an appeal against the decision.

Eyewitness footage shows what is said to be the moment of an explosion at a military industry factory in Isfahan

US officials believe drone attacks at a military plant in Iran’s central city of Isfahan were carried out by Israel, according to US media reports.

Tehran said on Sunday that drones had attacked the plant in Isfahan late the previous evening, calling the operation “unsuccessful.”

The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported that Israel was behind the attacks, citing US officials and people familiar with the operation. The New York Times cited senior intelligence officials who were familiar with the dialogue between Israel and the United States about the incident. None of the officials were named.

CNN has not independently confirmed that information. A US Department of Defense spokesperson told CNN that the US has not conducted strikes or operations inside Iran.

“We’ve seen the press reports, but can confirm that no US military forces have conducted strikes or operations inside Iran. We continue to monitor the situation, but have nothing further to provide,” the spokesperson said.

Iran’s Defense Ministry has not publicly offered any information about who carried out the attack. The Israel Defense Forces declined comment.

“An explosion has occurred in one of the military centers affiliated to the Ministry of Defense,” the deputy head of security for Isfahan governorate Mohammad Reza Jan-Nesari earlier told the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Jan-Nesari said the explosion had left some damage, “but fortunately there were no casualties.”

Security officials inspect the site of a mosque blast in Peshawar, Pakistan

More than 30 people have been killed and about 150 others wounded in an explosion targeting police at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, according to officials.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast on Monday.

Muhammed Asim, Lady Reading Hospital spokesperson in Peshawar, told Al Jazeera at least 32 people were killed and more than 70 injured people were brought in for treatment. A Peshawar police official told Al Jazeera about 150 people were wounded in total.

The mosque is inside a highly fortified compound that includes the headquarters of the provincial police force and a counterterrorism department.

Authorities said part of the building collapsed and that many people were feared to be trapped under the rubble.

Peshawar’s police chief, Muhammad Ijaz Khan, said in a televised statement that the capacity of the main hall of the mosque was nearly 300 and it was “nearly full” at the time of the explosion.

“We cannot at the moment confirm there was a suicide attacker but we need to conduct more investigations,” he said. “However, there is a possibility of there being a suicide bomber.”

The mosque is within Peshawar’s Police Lines, which is part of the city’s red zone where a number of important government installations are, including the Chief Minister House, Governor House, and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly building.

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said emerging details suggested that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.
