Sefwi chiefs unhappy with ethnocentric comments made about their region

The Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council in the Western North Region has called on Ghanaians to rubbish what it described as ethnocentric pronouncements made by a media personality on Onua Television Morning Show, Host Captain Smart.

To this end, the Council would want the public to treat the comments with the highest contempt it deserves, since the Western North Region was not a useless region as allegedly being portrayed by the TV host.

Controversial Captain Smart was alleged to have called the creation of the Western North as one of the useless regions in the country.

This pronouncement has incurred the wrath of the chiefs, who make up the region, to call a press conference last Thursday to express their displeasure with the pronouncement.

The Western North Region was carved from the Western Region in 2018 by the President Akufo-Addo-led administration among the six newly-created regions.

The creation of the region regions was one of President Akufo-Addo’s fulfillments of campaign promises made to the people when voted into power.

The motive behind the creation of the region is to bridge the infrastructure deficit between the Western South and Western North regions.

Nevertheless, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, on his Onua TV morning show programme dubbed Maakye, singled out the Western North Region and described it as the most useless.

The chiefs have, therefore, described his pronouncement as reckless, ignorance, irresponsible and one of who doesn’t know what he was doing.

They stress that as a Journalist, he needed to read and learn more before coming out on his show.

Addressing the press conference, Nana Elluo Panyin II, Kyidomhene of the Sehwi Wiawso Traditional Area and Chief of Sefwi Nzuezua, expressed disappointment at the comments made by Captain Smart.

Nana Elluo Panyin II opined that such comments had the potential of creating anarchy in the country.

He has, therefore, called on the TV Host to render an unqualified apology to the chiefs and people of the region.

GREL supports displaced flood victims with GH¢135,000 relief items

Following the recent torrential rains that displaced hundreds of people in the Western Region, most especially in the Ahanta West and Nzema East municipalities, the Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL), which has swathes of rubber plantations in the region, has quickly extended a hand of help to those affected by the downpour by going to their aid.

The company has donated relief items at the cost of GH¢135,000 through the Ahanta West and Nzema East Municipal assembly for onward distribution to the residents affected and displaced by the downpour.

GREL has, most particularly, swathes of rubber plantations in Ahanta West and Nzema East, and sees these areas as its host communities.

The relief items

The items included 70 bags of rice, 40 bags of sugar, 40 bags of sachet water and 60 pieces of blanket. The rest are 70 boxes of tinned tomatoes, 15 bags of gari, 40 boxes of 1 litre Frytol vegetable oil, and 400 gallons of liquid soap.

It would be recalled that, last two weeks, a continuous heavy downpour occurred, displacing hundreds of people in the Ahanta West and Nzema East municipalities.

In Ahanta West for instance, communities like Ewusiejoe, Ahuntumano, Hotopo, Fretsi, Aiyinase, and Abura amongst others were badly hit by the downpour.

National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reports have it that a total of 2,227 people were affected and displaced by the downpour. That apart, 889 buildings, mostly made of mud, were razed to the ground.

In Nzema East also, the NADMO officer, Anthony Ernest Amoah, reported that about 10 communities were affected by the rain storm. He mentioned the communities as Ankobra, Ehyiam, Akaso, Bamianko.

A total of 1,500 people, he said, were displaced, and buildings, including the chief’s palace, were razed to the ground.

Given the effect of the downpour on the residents, whose communities falls within the GREL catchment areas, the company donated the relief items to help ameliorate the challenges of the affected residents.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Society of Rubber Plantations (SIPH), Marc Genot, led the management and staff of GREL to present the relief items to the two Municipal assemblies.

Presenting the items, Marc Genot said GREL quickly organised to relieve the situation given the extent of damage caused by the downpour. “We convey our heart feelings to those people that have been affected,” and expressed the hope the relief items would be given to the displaced persons.

Present at the donation included the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West, John Agyare, Nana Kwesi Agyemang XI, Omanhene of Lower Dixcove and Chairman of the Association of Chiefs, on whose lands GREL operates (ACALANGO), Awulae Atibrukusu III, Vice Chairman of ACALANGO and Omanhene of Axim.

Mavis Abena Johnson, Deputy NADMO Director for Ahanta West, and Anthony Ernest Amoah, NADMO Director for Nzema East, were also present.

The MCE for Ahanta West, John Agyare, expressed the Assembly’s heartfelt appreciation to GREL for responding quickly to extend a hand of help to those affected and displaced by the downpour.

He indicated that though he had written several letters to corporate Ghana to extend assistance to those affected by the downpour, GREL was the first and only company to respond.

She believes the NEIP has become a solution to the national youth unemployment menace, and a special purpose vehicle designed by the President to lead the charge in creating jobs.

The deputy CEO also disclosed that the government is in the process of building an entrepreneurial state as part of the Ghana Beyond Aid blueprint.

She bemoaned that the country is facing enormous challenges in jobs and there is the need to encourage our youth to be job creators and not job seekers.

It is part of the reasons that she noted it has become necessary for the focus to be on entrepreneurship and innovation as that is the direction the whole world is moving towards.

For the business competition, Madam Abigail Laryea disclosed, is a revolution in the history of Ghana for young entrepreneurs, serves as an incubating platform for existing businesses and capital funding from the government.

NEIP disclosed that the competition will focus on the Agriculture, Fintech and technology, Manufacturing and processing, Tourism and the creative arts, TVET and any other economically viable area. Also, the applications will be narrowed down from the usual 20 to top 25.

NPA closes down 16 illegal ‘Gao Gao’ fuel stations

Mr Bashiru Natogma, the Upper West Regional Manager of NPA

The Upper East Regional office of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has embarked on an exercise to clamp down on sixteen illegal reseller outlets popularly known as ‘Gao Gao’ in the region.

The region has observed an alarming proliferation of these reseller outlets in areas such as Pelungu, Duusi, Gbane Shiega, Tongo, Gaare, Chuchuliga, Bolga Soe, Sirigu, Bongo, Zonno, Namolga, Sakote, Zorko and Kpale selling petroleum products without authorisation from NPA.

One of the fuel stations

Mr Bashiru Natogma, the Upper West Regional Manager of NPA, who made the disclosure to the media in an interview said the NPA Act prohibits any person, other than one licensed under the Act, from being in a possession of a petroleum product in quantities unreasonably in excess of that person’s immediate requirement.

He said those outlets lacked the necessary safety measures and infrastructure to handle and store petroleum products safely.

The Regional Manager enumerated that: “some of them often operate in close proximity to public spaces, increasing the risk of accidents and fire outbreaks. The absence of proper or adequate fire prevention systems such as fire fighting equipment and trained personnel further exacerbates these dangers.”

Mr. Natogma said the operation was to uphold the quality, pricing, and safety in retailing of petroleum products.

He advised the public about the risk associated with purchasing petroleum products from unauthorised reseller outlets and encouraged them to purchase petroleum products from authorised reseller outlets and fuel stations.

The Regional Boss further cautioned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) engaging in this illegal act to desist from it and seek proper guidance to legally operate reseller outlets.

He warned that OMCs caught supplying petroleum products to these unauthorised reseller outlets will be severely sanctioned by the regulator.

Dormaahene was spot on –Amaliba

Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II

Abraham Amaliba, Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the appeal made by Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, on discontinuation of the criminal trial of James Gyakye Quayson as right and spot on.

He said the Dormaahene made the appeal as a Ghanaian citizen who feels that it is a complete waste of time to continuously prosecute Mr Quayson, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North.

Mr Amaliba said this during a media interview after the hearing of Gyakye Quayson’s case by an Accra High Court yesterday.

His comments follow a question a journalist asked him about his views on the comment made by Dormaahene, who is also a sitting High Court judge and President of Bono Regional House of Chiefs, when he addressed the John Evans Atta Mills 10th anniversary lecture.

The Dormaahene, known in judicial practice as His Lordship Justice Daniel Mensah, said at the anniversary lecture that: “as a matter of urgency, I am appealing to the President of the Republic, Attorney General, if he has any role to play, that the trial should be aborted.”

Many, including the Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and member of the General Legal Council Disciplinary Committee Sam Okudzeto have sternly criticised the paramount chief. However, Mr. Amaliba rebutted that the Attorney-General does not understand his role, saying “His role as an Attorney General is to prosecute on behalf of the Republic and the people of this country are the custodians of sovereignty.”

He justified the paramount chief’s position by stating that there is nothing wrong with what he said, for if any Ghanaian feels it is a complete waste of time to continuously prosecute the MP, he or she can voice it out.

Mr. Amaliba reiterated: “The power resides in we the people not the Attorney-General. We are saying that exercise it in this way, the Attorney-General can’t be complaining when all powers belong to us.”

The NDC Legal Director also commended Nii Ayikoi Otoo, a former Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for allegedly suggesting that it would be in the best interest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Attorney-General to consider the discontinuation of the criminal case against James Gyakye Quayson.

Nevertheless, he turned his guns on Mr. Okudzeto, disagreeing with him for thinking that his opinion is law and for that matter some people should be called to the Disciplinary Committee of the Judicial Council.

“He himself is using one finger to point at the Dormaahene and four fingers are pointing at him. He has done more harm than good when this matter came to court,” Mr Amaliba stressed.

The trial of Gyakye Quayson

The court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, adjourned the case for the embattled MP, who was sworn in yesterday in Parliament House.

The performance of this national assignment compelled the court to adjourn the case to Thursday, June 6, 2023.

Deputy A-G, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, did not oppose the application by Gyakye Quayson’s lead Counsel, Tsatsu Tsikata, when he informed the court that his client was on national assignment and had to absent himself from court.

Background

James Quayson is being tried for deceit of Public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury and false declaration for office.

The accused has pleaded not guilty to all five charges and is currently on bail.

The Supreme Court last month ordered that Mr Quayson’s name be expunged from the records of Parliament as Assin North Constituency’s representative.

Mr Quayson has since made his way back to parliament after a resounding victory in a by-election held last week.

China’s new problem: Climate misinformation driven by nationalism

0
OPINION

Much has been written about climate misinformation in the West but there has been far less scrutiny of the problem in China – a country that is both a significant carbon emitter and a leader in developing green technology.

Annie Lab, our fact-checking project at the University of Hong Kong, looked into the diverse narratives of such climate misinformation, examples of which we have encountered and verified in the past.

One thing we can say is that these narratives are deeply connected to China’s assertion of its identity and pursuit of its aspirations. China has bounced back after years of poverty, establishing itself as an economic behemoth. It takes pride in this shift and development, so any challenge to this progress – and to the image of China – is perceived as hostile.

Not too long ago, that included climate change, which, from about 2009-2011, was often depicted in Chinese books and popular TV shows as a Western hoax designed to torpedo China’s economic rise.

After 2011, however, the messaging changed. These books and public statements disappeared amid growing public consciousness about climate change. This forced, in some ways, the government to take the problem seriously.

However, online, climate denial lives on and remains strong.

From September 2022 to April 2023, we collected more than a hundred posts from Chinese video, messaging and social media platforms such as Douyin, Bilibili, Xigua, Weibo and WeChat, among others, which showed different kinds of misleading posts about climate change.

We also found similar dodgy Chinese posts on YouTube and Twitter as well as articles from The Epoch Times, a news organisation reportedly linked to Falun Gong, a religious group banned in mainland China.

Our research unveiled various narratives, one of which explained the recurring manipulated images depicting Swedish activist Greta Thunberg as having gained weight. As it turned out, the doctoring of her photos to make her look that way is not an isolated case, nor is it a juvenile attempt at malicious pillory or an example of harmless mockery.

A deeper look takes us back to comments by Thunberg that stirred patriotic assertions, including that she was a tool or puppet of the West. In a May 2021 tweet, Thunberg said that while China remains a developing country, it must be more conscious about its carbon emissions.

She was accused of being a “selective environmentalist” because she did not comment on Japan’s plans to release nuclear wastewater into the Pacific Ocean, although she did share an article about it. Chinese online posts also said Thunberg told the Chinese people to stop using chopsticks to reduce deforestation – though there is no evidence the climate activist ever made such a statement.

Tensions between China and the West have shaped another narrative, too.

If before, Chinese book authors said climate change was something the West invented so China would rely on it for green technology, now there are social media posts saying the opposite. As the Asian giant has emerged as a leading manufacturer of clean tech, it is now the target of West-based far-right conspiracy theories, too. Misleading posts were found on Twitter as well as video-sharing platforms Rumble and Bitchute suggesting that climate change is supposedly just a scam concocted by China so the West could depend on it for green technology.

An offshoot of this is another strand of misinformation: The use of unverified videos on Twitter in Chinese allegedly showing Chinese-manufactured e-vehicles and wind turbines of shoddy quality.

Meanwhile, other social media claims and articles have downplayed the role of man-made emissions. On YouTube, one said volcanic eruptions put more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than human activities do. This has been debunked.

On WeChat, a user said global warming was caused by changes in the Earth’s orbit around the sun. The United States space agency NASA has clarified that while the sun does indeed have an effect on the Earth’s climate, “it isn’t responsible for the warming trend we’ve seen over recent decades”.

Chinese experts themselves stepped in to correct some of these claims. Authorities from the National Space Weather Forecasting Station of the China Meteorological Administration debunked a claim about solar activity being the main driver behind changes in the Earth’s climate.

The China Environment News, the official outlet of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, meanwhile, came out with an article that explained why, contrary to viral claims, rising temperatures will not usher in a period of prosperity for mainland China. This particular claim is very specific to China as it harks back to the Han and Tang dynasties, which were said to have experienced stability and prosperity during warmer climates.

Wu Yixiu, a former climate journalist with China Dialogue, a non-profit organisation that analyses climate issues in China and has offices in London and Beijing, told us the claim resonated with the public because it mirrored China’s aspiration of “rejuvenation”.

This narrative, along with the others, reveals that climate misinformation in China is largely shaped by nationalism, a sentiment that has become more fervent under President Xi Jinping, even if the Chinese government itself has to step in at times to challenge false claims.

It is not always about the science but about the story. And if the story is uncomfortable, a dose of climate misinformation is never far away.

Tinubu govt does not exist, it is illegitimate –Adebanjo

0
Yoruba socio-political organization, Ayo Adebanjo

The leader of the Yoruba socio-political organization, Ayo Adebanjo, has said President Bola Tinubu’s administration does not exist.

Adebanjo made the remark while describing Tinubu’s administration as illegitimate.

He explained that the election which brought Tinubu was flawed, hence he can’t be recognized as president.

Speaking on Arise Television, Adebanjo said the presidential election was inconclusive with the ongoing presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

According to Adebanjo: “Afenifere’s stance, for now, is not to comment on Tinubu’s administration because we believe that the elections are not completed yet; it’s still in progress, that is why we are in court, so commenting on someone who is there and who we don’t believe should be there until the final decision of the court will be probative and reprobative.

“We are not talking about his ability, we are talking about the process of his getting there, which is flawed. How can you build something on nothing, he is enjoying a lacuna, nothing is settled until it’s finally settled, that’s our stance.

“I refuse to comment on somebody that is not existing yet until the final arbiter of the court, our party may be wrong but that is our own stance. I can’t recognize him in an office that I believe doesn’t exist.”

Enugu govt threatens to shut schools, markets for observing IPOB’s sit-at-home

Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, Enugu State Governor

The Enugu State Government has threatened to shut schools and markets that observe the controversial one-week sit-at-order declared by a faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

PREMIUM TIMES earlier reported that Simon Ekpa, the leader of Autopilot, a faction of the IPOB, had, in a statement on 14 June, announced that there would be a one-week sit-at-home in the region.

Mr Ekpa, a self-acclaimed prime minister of “Biafra Republic Government in Exile”, said the sit-at-home would hold from 3 to 5 July and continue from Friday 7 to 10 July.

The agitator said the proposed civil action was to demand the “immediate and unconditional release” of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained at the facility of Nigeria’s secret police, State Security Service.

He said the action was also in preparation for the conduct of “Biafra’s self-referendum.” But Emma Powerful, the spokesperson of the IPOB faction led by Mr Kanu, would later disown the declaration, saying the sit-at-home order did not emanate from the group.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, the state government warned proprietors of private schools not to comply with the civil order or risk losing their licence.

Mr Onyia, a professor, explained that the warning was in response to social media reports on Tuesday morning that proprietors of some private schools in the state were sending messages to parents that they would not open their schools for one week due to the controversial sit-at-home order.

Tribunal orders Tinubu to open defence in Peter Obi’s petition

0
President Bola Tinubu

The Presidential Election Petition Court on Tuesday in Abuja ordered President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to open his defence in a petition by the Labour Party LP and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Gregory Obi instituted against his declaration as winner of the February 25 presidential election.

Tinubu was on March 1, 2023, declared the winner of the disputed election by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

The order of the Court followed INEC’S dramatic decision on Tuesday to terminate its defence in Obi’s petition after calling only one witness and tendering four documents.

Although the electoral body had informed the Court of the decision to justify the conduct of the poll with three witnesses, its lead counsel, Mr Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud suddenly announced the closure of INEC’s defence at Tuesday’s proceedings.

Tinubu’s lead counsel, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, told the Court that his client is fully ready to kick-start his defence on July 5 with his witnesses and documents to justify the victory in the presidential election.

At Tuesday’s proceedings, INEC’S witness, Dr Lawrence Bayode admitted that the electoral body suffered glitches during the presidential election but maintained that the glitches did not in any way affect the conduct of the election, collation of results and declaration of final results.

On the allegations of blurred result sheets on INEC’S portal, the Deputy Director of Information and Communication said clear result sheets can still be obtained on request by those in need of them.

Meanwhile, further hearing in the petition has been shifted to July 5 by the Court.

Nigeria, Angola now Africa’s biggest oil drilling markets –Report

0
Oil drilling plant

Nigeria has caught up with Angola in the drilling of crude oil, as both nations are now the biggest crude oil drilling markets in Africa, data from the June 2023 Offshore Rigs Tracker, released on Monday by Hawilti and the Caverton Offshore Support Group Plc, showed.

Nigeria lost its position as top African oil producer several times on the back of repeated crude theft and pipeline vandalism, but is now showing signs of recovery, going by the recent monthly oil production figures released by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

“Nigeria has caught up with Angola to also take the position of biggest drilling market this year, with a total of eight drilling campaigns confirmed offshore in both countries.

“However, activity is likely to remain higher in Angola as most drilling campaigns there are confirmed until the second half of 2024 already to support exploratory, infill, and development drilling,” the report stated.

It said several of the oil rigs mobilised offshore Nigeria had been extended, including the Valaris DS-10 for SNEPCo (Shell), and Shelf Drillings Baltic and Mentor rigs, for TotalEnergies and First E&P, respectively.

In addition, it stated that Shelf Drilling had also secured new contracts for the Adriatic I and the Scepter units which were providing a boost to Nigeria’s offshore drilling activities.

“The former is for drilling on Oriental Energy Resources Ebok Field scheduled between May and August this year, while the latter is for a much longer, two-year contract for an undisclosed operator.

“In total, Nigeria will see eight offshore drilling campaigns take place this year at any point in time, putting it at the same level as Angola,” the report stated. The report further stated that Africa’s offshore rigs count had kept growing since the start of 2023, with 38 drilling rigs contracted this year so far.

A breakdown on the number of rigs mobilised on the continent in 2023 showed that West Africa had 16, Southern Africa, 13; Central Africa,11; East Africa, 0.

The report stated that in West Africa, “Nigeria is finally back in business with most rigs schedules extended and new contracts signed since the start of the year.                                               Credit: punchng.com
