Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto in a hearty discussion with NPP General Secretary

The immediate-past Minister of Food and Agriculture and a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, defied the torrential rains that hit Assin North and other parts of the country on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 to campaign for Charles Opoku, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Assin North by-election.

Notable among the areas he visited to solicit votes for the party’s parliamentary candidate are Assin Bereku (District Capital), Assin Praso, Assin Asempaneye, Akenkanse, Akonfudi, Dansami, Assen Mempasem, Assin Kushia, Assin Senkyem, Assin Brofoyedu, Assin Juaso, Assin Breman, and Bediadua.

In all the areas he visited, Dr. Akoto interacted with the people and urged them to vote massively for Charles Opoku to enable him go to parliament and lobby for more developmental projects for the communities.

He was accompanied by the parliamentary candidate, Charles Opoku; the National chairman of the party, Stephen Ayensu Ntim; the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua; the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B); the deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin and the Minister of State at the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Osei Bonsu Amoah.

The rest were; the Campaign Chairman for the Afriyie Campaign Team and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Alfred Boye, National Coordinator for the campaign, Peter Oteng Darko, Central Regional First Vice-Chairman of the party, Assin North NPP Constituency Chairman, District Chief Executive, Assin North, Cape-Coast Municipal Chief Executive, Assin North constituency executives and several women organizers from the various Polling Stations in Assin North.

Local rice farmers ambush Dr. Akoto

When news hit the Assin North District that Dr. Afriyie Akoto was in town and had started campaigning for Charles Opoku, some rice farmers in the district, numbering about 400, gathered to ambush him at the District Capital, Assin Bereku, where they lauded him for positively impacting their lives when he was the Minister of Food and Agriculture.

At this point, Dr. Akoto had no choice but to address the rice farmers at a nearby Catholic Church, before continuing his campaign tour.

He expressed his appreciation to the rice farmers for honoring him and assured them of President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to supporting their activities.

Background

The relationship between the rice farmers and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto dates back to when he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwadaso and Ranking Member of the Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee.

It was during one of their meetings that the then government, led by John Dramani Mahama, sent a proposal from the Korean Ambassador to Ghana to Parliament, about a program they had designed, to study the economic potential of the Central Region.

The said sponsorship program by the Korean Government did not materialise due to little or no interest from the then government.

However, when the NPP, under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took over the political administration of the country on January 7, 2017 Dr. Akoto immediately reactivated the Korean Government’s sponsorship deal.

Addressing the rice farmers, he said that when the Korean experts presented their report, they were of the view that the Central Region has the potential to produce enough rice to feed Ghana and West Africa in general.

“The NDC couldn’t implement the program despite the persistent reminders. So, when the NPP took over in 2017 I reactivated this deal with the Korean government and that is why today we have a lot of you going into rice production here in Assin North District.

“The good news to what you are already enjoying is that President Akufo-Addo, together with the Korean Government, has initiated a move to import a lot of equipment and/or farm machinery to boost local rice production in the country. You are going to be the first beneficiaries of this project”, he noted.

He urged the rice farmers to continue believing in the Akufo-Addo government by voting massively for Charles Opoku in the upcoming Tuesday, June 27 by-election.

After interacting with the rice farmers, the former two-time MP for Kwadaso constituency and his entourage joined other party members at Assin Bediadua to observe the one-week funeral celebration of Madam Theresa Arthur, who was a Polling Station Women’s Organiser.

He also paid a courtesy call on the Chief and Elders of Bediadua, where he reintroduced Charles Opoku and appealed to them to support their son, since he is the only one who could lobby for more developmental projects in the constituency.

In a brief statement, the chief appealed to Dr. Akoto and the party leaders for more developmental projects in the area.

Tsatsu Flies Off The Handle … Hits hard at Dame in court again

Mr Tsatsu Tsikata and Godfred Yeboah Dame, Attorney-General

Lead Counsel for James Gyakye Quayson, Tsatsu Tsikata, says the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General (A-G), Godfred Yeboah Dame, is the only government chief adviser he has seen in his 57 years of law practice making prejudicial comments about a case pending before court.

He told a Criminal Division of the Accra High Court yesterday that Mr Dame’s conduct infringes upon the etiquette rules of the legal profession.

Mr Tsikata, had earlier on Tuesday, this week, complained to the court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, about certain insulting comments allegedly made by Mr Dame, about his client on Friday, June 16, 2023.

Arguing for the adoption of a supplementary affidavit, filed in support of a motion, the Counsel said the affidavit indicates clearly a pattern and of comments made by the A-G, which turn to prejudice criminal case pending before the court.

According to him, their application points out the trend in which Mr Dame has made prejudicial  statements with regards to the instant case and others, within and outside of the court, by granting interviews to the press.

He also accused Mr. Dame of making similar comments about the trial of Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni and others.

The Counsel said the A-G took advantage of the Supreme Court decision to make pronouncements on the Abu Sakande case to prejudice the case pending before the court.

Mr Godfred Dame, however, told the court that he would not respond to those accusations, but proceeded to make his argument on the application for the adoption of the supplementary affidavit by the latter.

Arguments

The A-G argued against the application, based on two preliminary objections. Thus, Mr Tsikata ought to seek leave of the court to file the supplementary application and also that the application contains absolutely unconnected and irrelevant materials to the matters before the court.

He said the affidavit is making allegation about a comment he made that the accused will suffer the same fate as Abu Sakande, meanwhile those issues raised were in connection to a civil matter and has nothing to with a criminal proceedings.

But Mr Tsatsu rebutted that there was no basis in law for the so called objection raised by the AG about the supplementary affidavit.

The court, however, held that despite the fact that the supplementary affidavit was filed without leave, it will be adopted and dismissed the preliminary objections raised the A-G.

Motion for variation of day-to-day trial

Continuing, Mr. Dame said the prosecution opposed to the application as it is completely unmeritorious and went ahead to correct an erroneous misconception that he chose the dates that the trial to be heard on, and “that I insisted that the case be heard on those dates. I only prayed that the case be heard on daily basis.”

He added that the conduct and the hearing of a criminal matter as well as adjournment of a case are entirely at the discretion of the court, regulated by Section 168 and 169 of Act 30.

The A-G said right to fair trial is stipulated in Article 19 of the 1992 Constitution, hence fair trial includes trial conducted within a reasonable time.

“The day-to-day hearing of a criminal case is a constitutional demand, which has been reinforced by the Supreme Court in the Eugene Baffoe-Bonney case. If he (accused) is fortunate to get a day-to-day trial, why is he complaining,” he added.

He said the application by the accused is unknown to the rules and procedure of court, therefore, “his motion is totally incompetent.  If the court should grant this application it will be encouraging discrimination in our court.”

Mr Dame added that the accused has no national assignment to contest in the parliamentary election, as when one offers himself to join a political party or contest election has nothing to do with national assignment.

“I insist that offering yourself for election is a personal matter until you have been elected.

The court also adjourned the ruling on whether the case should be put on hold to Friday, June 26, 2023.

Adjourning the hearing, the court also granted an oral application by the accused to dispense his presence on Friday, as the business for the day is for ruling on the application.

Dombos want Bawumia to lead NPP

Dr Bawumia and his spouse arriving at the NPP Headquarters last Friday

The northern faction of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dombo tradition, has appealed to the party faithful to support the Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s quest to lead the party in 2024.

Dombo is one of the three traditions that birthed the United Party, which metamorphosed into the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In “a humble plea,” contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, the family remarked that the appeal was a “national voluntary call that transcends ethnic or tribal boundaries.”

Signed by Naa Tikang Diedong Dombo, Duori Naa, the family said it had never made such a request until now, adding that the plea was not a case of entitlement or making a “premature call for our turn.”

However, the family argues that based on the concept of the oneness of a family, the washing of the soup bowl should revolve around.

“It is a humble plea and an appeal to the rank and file at all levels of our party to support the Presidential primary bid of H.E. the Vice President, Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia.

“We are making this plea for the first time since the marriage that brought forth the UP tradition.

It is a national voluntary call that transcends ethnic or tribal boundaries. It is not based on any ethnocentrism or sense of entitlement, but on the grounds of every healthy marriage and mutual co-existence, a mutuality that presupposes and disposes of mutual respect,” the family asserted.

Going into the primary, the arguments have been that both Danquah and Busia have ascended the highest thrown in the 4th Republic, concluding that it is time for Dombo to be represented.

The Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which originates from the Akans, Ashantis and the Northerns, have seen former President Kufuor represent the Ashantis and currently President Akufo-Addo holding it for the Akyems.

KUFUOR PRIMARIES

Making a point on the relevance of the plea, the family said that after the era of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, his then Vice President, Aliu Mahama, who is of the Dombo faction, contested the 2007 primary, but lost to Nana Akufo-Addo, now the President.

“For reasons of not being seen as seeking entitlement, we of this faction of our great tradition always bury our heads in the sand. We, however, feel that this time around, we should appeal to the sympathy of our great party faithful and loyalists to rally behind the second gentleman of the land, who has demonstrated the abilities to capably succeed HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and to lead us into winning the 2024 general elections.”

JOURNEY

The Dombo family has argued that, based on the constructive engagement of its Patriach, Chief Simon Diedong Dombo, in the politics of Ghana, his offspring believe he had the support of his northern peers.

They argue further that, considering the unity and support, they believe some northern folks might have subdued personal ambitions to help Chief Dombo assume the leadership mantle at the time.

The statement acknowledged the various contributions of all the northern political forerunners, including Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, Chief Lawyer Abeifa Karbo, and Dr. Hilla Liman.

“Brethren of our great political tradition, since the formation of the United Party as a result of the Avoidance of Discrimination Act (ADA) 1957 (C.A. 38), we on this side of the tradition, for the sake of unity of our tradition, have always thrown our support behind whoever gets elected at our presidential primaries.

“This is what democracy entails, and as we of this tradition stand firm and hold high these values, we should be the last to want to ask for any favours that may, in one way or another, diminish these credentials,” the family wrote.

CAMPAIGN

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, after submitting his nomination form last Friday, immediately commenced his official campaign.

He has since been meeting delegates in the Greater Accra Region, including those at Ablekuma South, Ayawaso East, La Dadekotopon, Ada, Sege, Ningo Prampram, Kpone Katamanso, Krowor, Ledzokuku, Klottey Korle, Odododiodio and Dome-Kwabenya constituencies.

A farmer in Ejura Sekyeredumase in the Ashanti Region, Opanyin Kwame Anthony Adjei, has called on delegates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, as flagbearer of the party.

According to him, Hon. Ghartey deserves to lead the NPP as flagbearer and Ghana as President.

Hon. Ghartey who is on his nationwide “Walking and Talking Tour” was commended by Opanyin Kwame Anthony. This was after Hon. Ghartey’s team
while driving along a bush track stopped to ask a group of farmers who were on the way to their farm for directions.

Opanyin Anthony could not hide his joy when he asked “isn’t that Joe Ghartey” and he got a positive response. He exclaimed “you used to wear your glasses at the tip of your nose when you were Attorney-General in President Kufuor’s era.”

He praised Hon. Ghartey for all the work he had done as Attorney-General and Minister for Railway Development. He said that Hon. Ghartey had served NPP and the country well and so NPP delegates should vote for him.

Opanyin Adjei said Hon. Ghartey was also from resource rich Western Region who had never had a Presidential Candidate under NPP or in the Fourth Republic. He concluded emphatically that “this is Joe Ghartey’s time.”

ECG Tema Region decries encroachment on its facilities

0
Ing Emmanuel Ankomah, Tema ECG GM

The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is decrying the rampant nature with which structures are being built within its utility corridor, a situation which poses a danger to lives and properties.

The General Manager of the Region, Ing Emmanuel Ankomah, told a section of the media at a brief engagement that the encroachment was done mainly by ‘chop bar’ operators, fitting shops and all sorts of businesses using metal containers such as hair salons, barber shops and ‘provisions’ shops.

These encroachers erect their structures on the ECG’s utility corridors, as well as near transformers, substations, and overhead cables, a situation that sometimes impedes repair works.

From his observation, Ing Ankomah said: “This situation has become rather too rampant within the entire Tema Region, which spans from Nungua, Tema, Afienya, Lower Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo, Prampram, Ningo, Sege, Ada, Sokpoe, Juapong and surrounding areas. In fact, the situation is present in all districts under the Tema Region.”

The ECG, Tema Region, operates within three regions of the country, which are Greater Accra, Eastern and Volta.

Ing Ankomah, therefore, appealed to all the assemblies in the three regions to ensure that they used their stringent legislation to evict all businesses standing on the corridors to avert the loss of lives and properties.

To business operators, Ing Ankomah advised them to refuse sites allocated to them close to ECG’s substations or lines for their own safety.

Market women laud Akuapem South MCE …for giving Aburi Market a facelift

0
The renovated Aburi market

The Aburi Market Queenmother, Madam Felicia Koranteng, has heaped praises on the management of the Akuapem South Assembly, led by Frank Aidoo, for giving a facelift to the Aburi Market.

The Aburi Market Queenmother described the MCE as a listening and proactive leader, who welcomed his developmental shortfalls and finds lasting solutions to them where necessary.

A few months ago, the people of Aburi pleaded with the Municipal Assembly, stakeholders, and authorities to find solutions to the deplorable state of the market to improve buying and selling of goods and services.

She indicated that the facelift would not only improve upon businesses in the municipality, but help the Assembly to improve on its Internal Generated Funds (IGF) collection.

The market women had been bemoaning low patronage due to the poor sanitary conditions and insecure nature of the place.

But the Akuapem South Municipal Assembly has now provided a new market center for the people of Aburi and its environs to boost patronage of goods and services in the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Akuapem South Municipality, Frank Aidoo, during the inauguration ceremony, charged the market women to take good care of the place and honour their taxes to the Assembly.

He further urged the traders to help expand the market and contribute to the development of the country by paying their taxes.

‘Let’s promote unity & inclusivity to consolidate constitutional democracy’

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Akuapem North Assembly, Barima A.S. Asiedu Larbi, has charged Ghanaians to promote unity and inclusivity in our society in the quest to consolidate our constitutional democracy.

He made the call during the launch of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) – Akuapem North 2023 Citizenship Week Celebration at Grace Presbyterian Church at Akropong on Friday.

The theme for the 2023 Citizenship Week Celebration is, “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy and Building National Cohesion: The Role of the Youth/Ghanaian Child.”

Students from Salem Presbyterian Junior High School (JHS), Municipal Assembly (M/A) JHS, Methodist JHS, and Okuapeman JHS, Akropong, among other important personalities in the Municipality graced the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, which was mainly made up of students from the four aforementioned JHSs, the MCE acknowledged the role young people played in Ghana’s democracy and shaping the country’s future.

He recounted the history of Ghana’s Constitutional Development until 28th April, 1992, when Ghanaians had a referendum to accept the constitution, which was 30 years ago.

The MCE said accountability was taking responsibility for one’s actions and doing what was right, hence, urging the students to be patriotic, peace loving and disciplined to ensure a clean environment, respect national symbols, as well as defending the Constitution and the laws of Ghana.

He commended the NCCE for organising the event, as well as teachers of the four schools for their respective contributions in making the event a success.

On her part, the Municipal Director for the NCCE, Ms. Benedicta Duvor, in her welcome address and purpose of the gathering, asked the students to reflect on the theme for the celebration.

Ms. Duvor entreated the gathering to appreciate the 30 years of democratic journey of the 4th Republican Constitution, which was the longest, ever since Ghana became a Republic in 1960, and urged the students to uphold and defend the Constitution for it to outlive the 30 years celebration.

Jealous boyfriend allegedly kills girlfriend

Late Oparibea

Residents of Trom, a town in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region, are still searching for answers following the alleged killing of 23-year old Felicia Abena Oparibea by her jealous boyfriend.

The Chronicle gathered that Godwin Darko, 25, on Saturday visited the late girlfriend after the deceased, who hailed from Koforidua-Betom, relocated to Trom about a year ago to hide from the suspect, after he allegedly threatened her when she decided to break up with him.

A co-tenant of the late Oparibea, who spoke with this reporter on condition of anonymity, averred that the deceased met the suspect outside the house on that fateful day, and later brought him to her room.

She told this reporter that there was a naming ceremony taking place in the house on that day, and nobody paid attention to the two young adults after they entered Oparibea’s room.

On the blind side of the tenants and other merrymakers after the naming ceremony, Darko allegedly attacked the late Oparibea in the room, pushed a piece of cloth into her mouth, before stabbing and cutting her throat without anyone noticing due to the noise in the house.

Darko, who appears to have rehearsed the hideous crime, scaled over the wall, threw away the knife with blood stains, before absconding.

He later reported himself to the police while wearing a red T-shirt with the inscription “Rest in Peace” at the back.

Police investigators visited the crime scene, and after inventories retrieved the body, which was lying in a pool of blood and sent it to the Koforidua Regional Hospital Morgue.

On Sunday afternoon, but for the alertness of police personnel, Darko would have been lynched by family members of the late Oparibea after he was brought to the crime scene to search for the knife used to commit the act, and conduct further investigations.

The police, upon sensing danger, whisked the suspect into a waiting taxi and fled the scene.

Opanin Kwasi Appiah, father of the deceased, was on Sunday in uncontrollable tears after he visited the house where the incident occurred.
