How my class 4 teacher changed my life -Kofi Kinaata recounts

Kofi Kinaata

Highlife Artiste Kofi Kinaata, has taken to social media to recount an encounter with his class 4 teacher which changed his life.

The ‘Things fall apart’ crooner said his teacher was deeply concerned about his troublesome and truant behaviour in school, which according to him always moved the teacher to tears.

Fearing for a not-so-bright future for Kinaata, his teacher went the extra mile to make a lasting impact on his life by taking him on a stroll and showing him two houses in the neighbourhood and the traits exhibited by both owners.

“I remember my class 4 teacher used to cry several times because I was very troublesome and truant. One day she took me out to see a nice building in the neighbourhood and asked me if I would like to build a nice house like this.

“I answered ‘yes’ and she told me the owner of the house was very obedient, paid attention in class, never worried his teacher, never fought in class and was very smart. Then she showed me a dirty house of one notorious person in our neighbourhood and asked which of the two houses I would love to build in future.

“I still answered the first one and she said the person who lives inside never paid attention in class and was behaving like me when he was my age so if I want to be a bigger person in future, I should take everything she teaches me seriously. Her advice changed my perspective on a lot of things.”

He revealed that, that made him realise the importance of taking his education seriously, paying attention in class and behaving responsibly.

It was from that moment he revealed his life changed for the better and that experience has stayed with him throughout his journey to becoming a successful musician.

He made the revelation while contributing to a discussion by actress Lydia Forson on the need for teachers to be highly renumerated.

Israel to allow Palestinian Americans entry, wants US visa waiver

0
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has been visiting the United States this week

Israel will allow all United States citizens, including Palestinian Americans living in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, to enter the country in a bid to get visa-free travel for Israelis to the US.

The change was introduced on Thursday, after US Ambassador Thomas Nides and Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who is currently visiting the US, signed a “reciprocity agreement” on the issue a day earlier, according to an Israeli statement.

“The full implementation of the program will apply to any US citizen, including those with dual citizenship, American residents of Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank] and American residents of the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.

The US has previously prevented Israel from joining its Visa Waiver Program (VWP), citing its differential treatment of some US citizens.

US officials will monitor the changes over a period of six weeks and make a decision about Israel’s entry into the VWP by September 30, according to US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Hot dog salesman-turned-mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin

The UK is sanctioning 13 individuals and businesses connected to Wagner Group activities in Mali, Sudan and the Central African Republic.

Wagner mercenaries have provided security services in several African countries.

Konstantin Aleksandrovitch Pikalov, sometimes referred to as the “right-hand man” of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, is among those named.

He is accused of human rights abuses.

Until an attempted mutiny last month, Wagner fighters played a key role in Russian’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The Wagner Group is committing atrocities in Ukraine, as well as acting with impunity in countries like Mali, Central African Republic and Sudan,” UK Development Minster Andrew Mitchell said.

“These sanctions expose despicable individuals who have commissioned violations of international humanitarian law, holding them to account for the severe harm they are inflicting on innocent civilians for financial gain.”

Xi hails ‘old friend’ Kissinger during meeting that harks back to an era of warmer ties

China's late paramound leader Deng Xiaoping met with former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in Beijing on November 11, 1985

Chinese leader Xi Jinping hailed Henry Kissinger as an “old friend” during a meeting with the 100-year-old former US Secretary of State who is in Beijing this week for a surprise visit.

Xi met Kissinger at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, a diplomatic complex in western Beijing where Kissinger was received during his first visit to China in 1971, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Since then, Kissinger has visited China more than 100 times, Xi noted in the meeting.

In July 1971, Kissinger became the first high-ranking US official to visit Communist China. His secret meetings with Chinese leaders paved the way for then US President Richard Nixon’s “ice-breaking” trip the following year.

In the decades that followed, US-China ties blossomed alongside their economic interdependence. But in more recent years the relationship between the world’s two largest economies has deteriorated markedly.

For Xi, Kissinger’s presence was a reminder of less rocky times.

“We never forget our old friends, and will never forget your historic contribution to the development of China-US relations and the enhancement of friendship between the two peoples,” Xi told Kissinger.

“China and the United States are once again at the crossroads of where to go, and the two sides need to make a choice again,” he said, urging Kissinger and like-minded Americans to “continue to play a constructive role in bringing China-US relations back to the right track.”

Protesters gather near the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, on July 20, 2023

Iraq has expelled the Swedish ambassador only hours after Iraqi protesters angered by the burning of copies of the Quran in Sweden stormed the Swedish embassy in central Baghdad, scaling the walls of the compound and setting it on fire.

The Iraqi prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, also recalled his country’s charge d’affaires in Sweden, the government said on Thursday, and suspended the working permit of

Early on Thursday morning, demonstrators at the embassy waved flags and signs showing the influential Iraqi Shia religious and political leader Muqtada al-Sadr, according to Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Abdelwahed in Nasiriyah, southern Iraq.

The burning of the embassy was called by supporters of al-Sadr to protest the second planned burning of a Quran in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm on Thursday. While protesters in Sweden kicked and partially damaged a book they said was the Quran, they did not burn it as they had threatened to do.

The Finnish embassy in Baghdad is adjacent to the Swedish embassy, in an area enclosed by blast walls. Finland’s ambassador to Iraq, Matti Lassila, told the Finnish public broadcaster YLE that the staff of the Swedish and Finnish embassies were proactively evacuated Wednesday and were uninjured.

All embassy staff were safe, the Swedish foreign ministry press office also said in a statement, condemning the attack and highlighting the need for Iraqi authorities to protect diplomatic missions.

Manipur: India outrage after women paraded naked in violence-hit state

0
Manipur has been rocked by ethnic clashes since May

A video showing two women being paraded naked by a mob in the north-eastern state of Manipur, hit by violent ethnic clashes, has sparked outrage in India.

The police say they have opened a case of gang rape and arrested a man, adding that others will be held soon.

On Thursday, parliament’s session in Delhi was disrupted as lawmakers demanded a debate on the issue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said the incident had “shamed India” and that “no guilty will be spared”.

“I assure the nation, the law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven,” he said, finally breaking his silence on Manipur more than two months after violence erupted.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also expressed concern over the assault, saying the Supreme Court was “deeply disturbed over the video”. Telling the government to inform the court about the steps being taken against the accused, the chief justice said “we will take action if you don’t”.

Deadly violence has plunged Manipur, a scenic Indian state bordering Myanmar, into turmoil for more than two months.

Clashes between members of the majority Meitei and the Kuki tribal communities have resulted in their complete segregation. At least 130 people have died and 60,000 have been displaced.

The two women, who are Kukis, were assaulted by men of the Meitei group.

Health and Nutrition Benefits of Cocoa Powder

0
Cocoa powder

Health benefits of cocoa include decreased inflammation, improved heart and brain health, and blood sugar and weight control.

Cocoa is thought to have first been used by the Maya civilization of Central America.

It was introduced to Europe by Spanish conquerors in the 16th century and quickly became popular as a health-promoting medicine.

Cocoa powder is made by crushing cocoa beans and removing the fat or cocoa butter.

Today, cocoa is most famous for its role in chocolate production. However, modern research has revealed that it does indeed contain important compounds that can benefit your health.

Here are some health and nutrition benefits of cocoa powder.

  1. Rich in polyphenols that provide several health benefits

emmaduckworth/Getty Images

Polyphenols are naturally occurring antioxidants found in foods like fruits, vegetables, tea, chocolate and wine.

They have been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced inflammation, better blood flow, lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Cocoa is one of the richest sources of polyphenols. It’s especially abundant in flavanols, which have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

However, processing and heating cocoa can cause it to lose its beneficial properties. It’s also often treated with alkaline to reduce bitterness, which results in a 60% decrease in flavanol content.

So while cocoa is a great source of polyphenols, not all products containing cocoa will provide the same benefits.

  1. May reduce high blood pressure by improving nitric oxide levels

Cocoa, both in its powdered form and in the form of dark chocolate, may be able to help lower blood pressure.

This effect was first noted in the cocoa-drinking island people of Central America, who had much lower blood pressure than their non-cocoa-drinking mainland relatives.

The flavanols in cocoa are thought to improve nitric oxide levels in the blood, which can enhance the function of your blood vessels and reduce blood pressure.

One review analyzed 35 clinical trials that provided participants with 0.05–3.7 ounces (1.4–105 grams) of cocoa products, or roughly 30–1,218 mg of flavanols. It found that cocoa produced a small but significant reduction of 2 mmHg in blood pressure.

Additionally, the effect was greater in people who already had high blood pressure than those without it and slightly greater in younger people compared to older people.

However, it’s important to remember that processing significantly reduces the number of flavanols, so the effects most likely will not be seen from the average chocolate bar.

  1. May lower your risk of heart attack and stroke

In addition to lowering blood pressure, it appears that cocoa has other properties that may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Flavanol-rich cocoa improves the level of nitric oxide in your blood, which relaxes and dilates your arteries and blood vessels and improves blood flow.

What’s more, cocoa has been found to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol, have a blood thinning effect similar to aspirin, decrease insulin resistance, and reduce inflammation.

These properties have been linked to a lower risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke.

A review of nine studies in 157,809 people found that higher chocolate consumption was associated with a significantly lower risk of heart disease, stroke and death.

Two Swedish studies found that chocolate intake is linked to a lower rate of heart failure at doses of up to one serving of 0.7–1.1 ounces (19–30 grams) of chocolate per day, but the effect was not seen when consuming higher amounts.

These results suggest that frequent consumption of small amounts of cocoa-rich chocolate may have protective benefits for your heart.

  1. Polyphenols improve blood flow to your brain and brain function

Several studies have found that polyphenols, such as those in cocoa, may reduce your risk of neurodegenerative diseases by improving brain function and blood flow.

Flavanols can cross the blood-brain barrier and are involved in the biochemical pathways that produce neurons and important molecules for the function of your brain.

Additionally, flavanols influence the production of nitric oxide, which relaxes the muscles of your blood vessels, improving blood flow and blood supply to your brain.

An older two-week study in 34 older adults given high-flavanol cocoa found blood flow to the brain increased by 8% after one week and 10% after two weeks.

Further studies suggest that daily intake of cocoa flavanols can improve mental performance in people with and without mental impairments.

These studies indicate a positive role of cocoa on brain health and possible positive effects on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. However, more research is needed.

  1. May improve mood and symptoms of depression by various means

In addition to cocoa’s positive impact on age-related mental degeneration, its effect on the brain may also improve mood and symptoms of depression.

The positive effects on mood may be due to cocoa’s flavanols, the conversion of tryptophan to the natural mood stabilizer serotonin, its caffeine content or simply the sensory pleasure of eating chocolate.

A survey of over 13000 US adults found that dark chocolate may be linked to a lower chance of having symptoms of clinical depression.

Additionally, an older study in senior men showed that preference toward eating chocolate over other candies was linked to improved overall health and better psychological well-being.

While the results of these early studies are promising, more research on the effect of cocoa on mood and depression is needed before more definite conclusions can be drawn.

  1. Flavanols may improve symptoms of type 2 diabetes

Though overconsumption of chocolate is certainly not good for blood sugar control, cocoa does, in fact, have some anti-diabetic effects.

Test-tube studies indicate that cocoa flavanols can slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption in the gut, improve insulin secretion, reduce inflammation and stimulate the uptake of sugar out of the blood into the muscle.

Some studies have shown that a higher intake of flavanols, including those from cocoa, can result in a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, a review of human studies showed that eating flavanol-rich dark chocolate or cocoa can may improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control and reduce inflammation in diabetic and nondiabetic people.

Despite these promising results, there are inconsistencies in the research with some studies finding only a limited effect, slightly worse control of diabetes or no effect at all.

Nevertheless, these results combined with the more concrete positive effects on heart health indicate cocoa polyphenols may have a positive impact on both preventing and managing diabetes, though more research is required.

  1. May aid weight control in many surprising ways

Somewhat paradoxically, cocoa intake, even in the form of chocolate, may help you control your weight.

It’s thought that cocoa may help by regulating the use of energy, reducing appetite and inflammation and increasing fat oxidation and feelings of fullness.

A population study a link between people who consumed chocolate more frequently and a lower BMI, despite the finding that eating chocolate more often was also linked to eating more calories and fat.

Additionally, a weight loss study using low-carbohydrate diets found that a group given 42 grams or about 1.5 ounces of 81% cocoa chocolate per day lost weight faster than the regular diet group.

However, other studies have found that chocolate consumption increases weight. Yet, many of them did not differentiate between the type of chocolate consumed — white and milk chocolate do not have the same benefits as dark.

Overall, it appears that cocoa and cocoa-rich products may be helpful in achieving weight loss or maintaining weight, but further studies are needed.

  1. May have cancer-protective properties

Flavanols in fruits, vegetables and other foods have attracted a great deal of interest due to their cancer-protective properties, low toxicity and few adverse side effects.

Cocoa has the highest concentration of flavanols out of all foods per weight and can significantly contribute to their amount in your diet.

Test-tube studies on components of cocoa have found that they have antioxidant effects, protect cells against damage from reactive molecules, fight inflammation, inhibit cell growth, induce cancer cell death and help prevent the spread of cancer cells.

Animal studies using a cocoa-rich diet or cocoa extracts have seen positive results in reducing breast, pancreatic, prostate, liver and colon cancer, as well as leukemia.

Studies in humans have shown that flavanol-rich diets are associated with a decrease in cancer risk. However, the evidence for cocoa specifically is conflicting, as some trials have found no benefit and some have even noticed an increased risk.

Small human studies on cocoa and cancer suggest that it can be a powerful antioxidant and may play a role in cancer prevention. However, much more research is needed.

  1. Theobromine and theophylline contents may help people with asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes obstruction and inflammation of the airways and can be life-threatening.

It’s thought that cocoa may be beneficial for people with asthma, as it contains anti-asthmatic compounds, such as theobromine and theophylline.

Theobromine is similar to caffeine and may help with persistent coughing. Cocoa powder contains about 1.9 grams of this compound per 100 grams or 3.75 ounces.

Theophylline helps your lungs dilate, your airways relax and decreases inflammation.

Animal studies have shown that cocoa extract can reduce both the constriction of the airways and tissue thickness.

However, these findings have not yet been clinically tested in humans, and it’s unclear if cocoa is safe to use with other anti-asthmatic drugs.

Therefore, even though this is an interesting area of development, it’s too early to say how cocoa may be used in treating asthma.

  1. Easy to include in your diet

The exact amount of cocoa you should include in your diet to achieve health benefits is not clear.

The European Food Safety Authority recommends 0.1 ounces (2.5 grams) of high-flavanol cocoa powder or 0.4 ounces (10 grams) of high-flavanol dark chocolate containing at least 200 mg of flavanols per day to achieve heart health benefits.

However, this number has been deemed too low by other researchers, who claim higher amounts of flavanols are required to see benefits.

Overall, it’s important to select cocoa sources that have a high flavanol content — the less processed, the better. Also, to maximize health benefits, cocoa is best enjoyed within the context of a balanced diet.

Fun ways to add cocoa to your diet include:

Eat dark chocolate: Make sure it’s good quality and contains at least 70% cocoa. Check out this guide on selecting high-quality dark chocolate.

Hot/cold cocoa: Mix cocoa with your favorite dairy or nondairy milk for a chocolate milkshake.

Smoothies: Cocoa can be added to your favorite healthy smoothie recipe to give it a richer, chocolatey taste.

Puddings: You can add raw cocoa powder (not Dutch) to homemade puddings like chia breakfast puddings or rice pudding.

Vegan chocolate mousse: Process avocado, cocoa, almond milk and a sweetener like dates for a thick vegan chocolate mousse.

Sprinkle over fruit: Cocoa is particularly nice sprinkled over bananas or strawberries.

Granola bars: Add cocoa to your favorite granola bar mixture to bump up the health benefits and enrich the flavor.

The bottom line

Cocoa has captivated the world for thousands of years and is a big part of modern cuisine in the form of chocolate.

Health benefits of cocoa include decreased inflammation, improved heart and brain health, blood sugar and weight control and healthy teeth and skin.

It’s nutritious and easy to add to your diet in creative ways. However, make sure to use non-alkalized cocoa powder or dark chocolate containing more than 70% cocoa if you want to maximize health benefits.

Remember that chocolate still contains significant quantities of sugar and fats, so if you’re going to use it, stick to reasonable portion sizes and combine it with a healthy balanced diet.

It’s also important to note that cocoa naturally contains lead and cadmium so the darker the chocolate, the more likely there is to be a higher concentration of these heavy metals. Cocoa and chocolate are best enjoyed in moderation.

10 QUALITIES OF A TRUE DISICIPLE

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:18-20

INTRODUCTION

As Christians, we are called to be disciples and also disciple others. Scripture mentions being a disciple many times. And Jesus Himself speaks often about the significance of being His disciple.

Discipleship is key to our Christianity, and while we are not perfect in our faith or in our walk with Christ, we should always strive for perfection for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is what the Lord wants of us. He expects that if we choose to follow Him, then we are accepting that we are to live a different life from those who don’t follow Him. Jesus laid out the many standards and expectations of discipleship.

MAINTAINING SPIRITUAL FOCUS

All Christians face the challenge of maintaining spiritual focus. This physical world can be distracting. Its sights and sounds often take us on a path different from what would benefit our goals as Christians.

Are you able to walk the “straight and narrow” when disruptions and diversions compete for your attention? You can move forward, rather than sideways, in your calling—but it requires thoughtful planning and perseverance. And it starts with self-examination and taking spiritual inventory of yourself. These are vital to maintaining Christian growth.

LET’S LOOK AT 10 QUALITIES OF A TRUE DISCIPLE

  1. Loves Jesus above everyone and everything.

The first Commandment calls for this and Christians adhere to this with devotion. While disciples love their family, friends and even foes, they put the Lord above all else and it’s evident in their priorities. Money, career, ambition may be a part of their lives, but these things and other material interests never come before Christ and following His Word.

  1. Selflessness and sacrifice.

Disciples always put others first and in many ways put other’s needs before their own. This is evident in disciples’ selfless deeds and many acts of kindness.

  1. Humility and modesty.

To be humble is to be a disciple of the Lord, because the Lord Himself was truly humble. Just remember that He came into this world a man, and how He came, in a stable, laying in a manger. He humbled Himself to everyone and yet He was God. Christ’s disciples are also modest, not just in appearance but also in the way that they act.

  1. Dedicated to following Christ and the Commandments.

A disciple is committed to the Lord and eager to follow His Word and act in ways that are pleasing to Him. This doesn’t mean that a disciple is perfect or that she always does the right thing.

  1. Is not easily influenced by the world.

In fact, a disciple is indifferent to the standards of the world and is not affected by trends or fashion.

  1. Has self-control in his/her emotions and actions.

This is evident in the way he/she behaves, regardless of how others act toward him/her. If she is criticized, ridiculed or persecuted for her faith, she responds with kindness, just as Jesus did. After all, Christ called us all to do as He did.

  1. Lives the Word.

A disciple is a light that shines in the world and reflects the Lord in her actions and lifestyle. Her faith is reflected in her words and deeds. “You are the light of the world,” Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16. “A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

  1. Professes the Word regularly and effectively.

A disciple speaks the Word of the Lord in regular conversation, not in a preachy way, but naturally because it’s what she believes. And she’s so eager to share the Word because her desire is to introduce the Lord to everyone.

  1. Loves as Christ did Or at least tries to.

Jesus is love and He was clear when He called all His followers to love as He loved. Disciples understand that it’s not easy to love as the Lord did, but know also that to love others is to love Him.

  1. Recognizes that he or she needs God’s strength to be a true disciple.

Because a disciple knows his or her weaknesses and understands that he or she cannot live in this world without the strength of the Lord. And that suffering is only bearable when the Lord is with him or her.

CONCLUSION:

As disciples we have received power from the Holy Spirit to be courageous, bold, confident, insightful, filled with great abilities and authority. We are called to utilize these gifts to fulfill our mission. As disciples let us arise and help to reinforce the spiritual focus of the church to make a great impact on our world through discipleship and preaching the good news.

Stay blessed!
