House of Reps reject proposed electricity tariff increase

0
Nigeria House of Representatives

The House of Representatives has taken a firm stance against the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) by rejecting the proposed increase in electricity tariff.

This resolution was reached following a motion presented by Honourable Aliyu Madaki, who expressed strong disapproval of the price hike, especially considering the recent increase in petrol prices that has already burdened many Nigerians.

Honourable Aliyu Madaki emphasized that it is inappropriate and insensitive to introduce such a significant tariff increase at a time when citizens are still grappling with the impact of the petrol price surge.

In response to the motion, the House has mandated its committee on power, once constituted, to engage in discussions with NERC. The aim is to seek a mutual understanding and find a middle ground to address the proposed tariff hike, considering the current economic challenges faced by the populace.

The lawmakers say the House remains committed to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians and ensuring that decisions made by regulatory bodies are in line with the welfare of the citizens. Credit: channelstv.com

WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has alerted Nigeria and other countries on contaminated ‘Naturcold Syrup’ discovered in Cameroon.

The organisation gave the notification in a medical product alert posted on its website.

It said that the substandard product was unsafe and their use, especially in children, may result in serious injury or death.

According to WHO, the toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death.

It said the substandard Naturcold Syrup identified in Cameroon was first reported to WHO on March 13, 2023.

The health agency noted that the active ingredients of Naturcold syrup were listed as paracetamol, phenylephrine hydrochloride and chlorpheniramine maleate.

It said that the combination of these three ingredients are used to relieve symptoms associated with the common cold, flu, and allergic rhinitis.

“Samples of the Naturcold syrup from Cameroon were made available to WHO on 27 June 2023 and analysed in a WHO contracted and pre-qualified laboratory.

“The analysis found that the product contained unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol as contaminants.

“Diethylene glycol was detected in samples of Naturcold as much as 28.6 per cent.

“The acceptable limit for Diethylene Glycol is no more than 0.10 per cent,” it said.

WHO said that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal.

It said that the stated manufacturer of the affected product was listed on the product packaging as ‘Fraken International (England)’.

“The United Kingdom national regulatory authority, the MHRA, has confirmed that no such company exists in the UK,” it said.

Prosecution looms over UG’s GH¢1.2m locked-up investment

0
Officials of UG, Legon (back facing), appearing before PAC

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) may recommend the prosecution of some officials of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, and NDK Financial Services over a GH¢1.2 million investment fund.

The Office of Research Innovation and Development (ORID), UG, Legon, which made the investment, has had its GH¢1,234,767.59 locked up with NDK Financial Services, with no hope of recouping, since 2019.

The UG, Legon, has redeemed a paltry GH¢100,000.00 from the total funds of GH¢1,334,767.59, as of March 17, 2020, leaving GH¢1,234,767.59, though the due date was October 15, 2019.

From left – Dir of Finance, Bernce Agudu, VC Prof Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, then Pro VC, in charge of Research, Prof Felix Asante

According to the Auditor-General, the anomaly was occasioned by “the non-adherence” to the University’s investment policy directives, issued on October 4, 2018, by the Vice Chancellor, which “restricted all investment activities” to only commercial banks that had met the minimum capital threshold of the Bank of Ghana.

In paragraphs 1286 to 1294 of the 2021 Report of the Auditor-General on public boards, corporations, and other statutory institutions, management told the auditors that it “will not relent in its efforts to retrieve amounts invested.”

PROSECUTION

Interrogated at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the PAC did not take the issue lightly and may recommend prosecution through the Attorney General to recoup the investment.

The Committee members expressed their displeasure with the officials of the UG, Legon, when they appeared before it to respond to issues relating to the institution, raised by the A-G in the 2021 Auditor General Report.

Recalling that the auditors flagged the University of Education, Winneba, for the same investment gone bad issue, the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Defeamakpor, indicated the need to crack the whip.

“The University officers should be prosecuted like we are prosecuting persons whose offenses border on procurement breaches. These are very serious matters. Chairman, I think we should start with this report,” he recommended.

Officials of UG, Legon, at the PAC sitting, including VC (right), Pro VC (2nd right) and Dir of Finance (5th right)

The MP could not fathom why the university was facing accommodation challenges for staff and students, but chose to invest in financial institutions that could not pay back.

He was convinced that the then Pro-Vice Chancellor would take personal steps to recoup the money “if he is prosecuted.”

LESSONS LEARNT

The Director of Finance, Bernice B. Agudu, told the Committee that the university had learned its lessons owing to the investment policy instructions referred to, “and we are adhering to that.”

According to the Finance Director, NDK Financial Services had “liquidity challenges” and promised to pay, but that had not materialized.

However, she said management had followed internal processes and handed the issue over to its legal council, which is following up.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor, in charge of Research and Innovation Development, Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante, told the Committee that the investment was done in 2017, but the directive to work only with commercial banks was in 2018. He blamed the lockup on the liquidity crisis during the banking and financial sector clean-up exercise undertaken by the government in its first term.

He told the Committee that the funds were generated in the office, from overheads and other sources, and were invested, not direct research funds.

Ghana Post attributes financial losses in 2020 to COVID-19

0
Ghana Post

Mr. Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as “Obour”, Managing Director of the Ghana Post Company Limited, has attributed the GH¢6.17 million financial loss of the Company in 2020 to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Managing Director made the revelation at the public hearing of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament in Accra.

Mr. Kuffour took his turn at the public hearing of PAC to respond to issues raised concerning the Ghana Post Company in 2021 report of the Auditor-General.

Dr James Klutse Avedzi, the Chairman of PAC in his questions to Mr. Kuffour said the Company made huge losses in 2020, and that from a huge profit of GH¢995,000.00 the company went down to a loss of GH¢6,173,000.00, which was bad.

“It is not good and the main contributor to that is your operating cost, which has increased by almost 16 per cent and general selling and administrative expenses also increased by 20 per cent.

“How is the situation now? Has it improved?” the Chairman asked.

Mr. Kuffour in his response said the Company’s situation had improved.

“Honourable Chair, our work as a postal administrator involves a lot of moving out of the country and out of the jurisdiction and receiving items into your jurisdiction. And so, in 2020, when Ghana was hit with COVID, borders were shutdown, items that you would have easily moved with vehicles, you have to move it with airlines, so it created a lot of operational cost,” he said.

He noted that since 2020, the situation had never been like it was.

“I am sure if we do come here again for 2021, 2022, I am sure your committee will commend the management of Ghana Post,” Mr. Kuffour said.

“But let me go into what is happening now, now, it is much better, we don’t have these challenges that we faced in 2020.”

He said what affected their business also was the period in which Ghana had fluctuation of the Ghana Cedi against major international currencies like the United States dollar.

He reiterated that now that the cedi had been stabilized against other international currencies, they were back in business.

Lemongrass: a natural remedy for menstrual cramps, bloating, and hot flashes.

0
Prof Raphael Nyarkotey Obu

Lemongrass, also called citronella, is a tall, stalky plant. It has a fresh, lemony aroma and a citrus flavor. It’s a common ingredient in Thai cooking and bug repellent. Lemongrass essential oil is used in aromatherapy to freshen the air, reduce stress, and uplift the mood.

Lemongrass is also used as a folk remedy to promote sleep, relieve pain, and boost immunity. One of the most popular ways to enjoy lemongrass is in tea.

 Lemongrass,   Science

Antioxidant

A study by Cheel et al.(2005) found that lemongrass has many antioxidants, which can avert free radicals in the body.  Some of these antioxidants are chlorogenic acid, isoorientin, and swertiajaponin. These antioxidants could prevent the dysfunction of cells inside the coronary arteries.

Antimicrobial

One study by Chaudhari et al.(2012) found that Lemongrass tea could treat oral infections and cavities, due to its antimicrobial properties. The oil was found to demonstrate antimicrobial properties against Streptococcus mutans bacteria, the bacteria most responsible for tooth decay.

A previous study by Ahmad and Viljoen(2005) found lemongrass oil and silver ions could work together against many types of bacteria and fungi in vitro.

Anti-inflammatory

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center found that two main compounds in lemongrass, citral, and geranial, are responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits as they could avert the release of some inflammation-causing indicators in the body.

Cancer risk

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center study found that the citral in lemongrass could also be a potent anticancer agent.  Apart from that, there are so many ingredients in lemongrass that could wade off cancer.  This is done by causing cell death directly or boosting the immune system. Lemongrass tea is sometimes used as an adjuvant therapy during chemotherapy and radiation. It should only be used under the guidance of an oncologist.

Promote healthy digestion

Studies have found that a cup of lemongrass tea is a natural therapy for upset stomach, stomach cramping, and other digestive problems.  This was demonstrated in one study by Fernandes et al.(2012) on rodents who found that lemongrass could be potent against gastric ulcers. The essential oil of lemongrass leaves could help protect the stomach lining against damage from aspirin and ethanol. Regular aspirin use is a common cause of gastric ulcers.

Diuretic

lemongrass is a known diuretic. A diuretic allows you to urinate more often, getting your body of excess fluid and sodium. Diuretics are often prescribed if you have heart failureliver failure, or edema. Hence, it could be a natural diuretic. For instance, one study by Mirza et al(2001) on rats found lemongrass tea as a potent diuretic activity similar to green tea without causing organ damage or other side effects. For the study, lemongrass tea was given to rats over six weeks.

Reduce high systolic blood pressure

one observational study by Ullah et al(2012) used 72 male volunteers and prescribed either lemongrass tea or green tea to drink.  The study found that those who took the lemongrass tea had a moderate drop in systolic blood pressure and a mild increase in diastolic blood pressure. They also had a significantly lower heart rate.

This is good news for those with high systolic blood pressure, however, caution is given to men with heart problems to use lemongrass in moderation. This can help avoid dangerous drops in heart rate or increased diastolic pressure.

Regulate cholesterol

one study by Shah et al.(2011) found that lemongrass oil extract lowers cholesterol in animals. The reduction in cholesterol is dependent on the dose given.  Hence, another study answers this: Costa et al.(2011)  on mice found the long-term safety of up to 100mg of lemongrass essential oil daily.  Ongoing research is needed to confirm the impact of lemongrass tea as well.

Lose weight

Annette McDermott’s (2019) article revealed that Lemongrass tea can be used as a detox tea to lose weight. Also, it is better to drink herbal teas as compared to soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened drinks.

Relieve symptoms of PMS

one study by Shah et al. (2011) found that lemongrass oil is helpful to cool the body. This in turn could help as a natural remedy for menstrual cramps, bloating, and hot flashes.

warnings

Lemongrass is generally considered safe to use in food amounts, including the amount typically used to make tea.

Potential side effects include:

  • dizziness
  • increased hunger
  • dry mouth
  • increased urination
  • tiredness

Some people may be allergic to lemongrass. Get emergency help if you experience allergic reaction symptoms, such as:

  • rash
  • itching
  • difficulty breathing
  • rapid heart rate

You shouldn’t drink lemongrass tea if you:

  • are pregnant
  • take prescription diuretics
  • have a low heart rate
  • have low potassium levels

The bottom line

Most studies on lemongrass used the oil, not lemongrass tea. But you can use the tea as well just in case you do not get the oil.  lemongrass tea or lemongrass tea bags can be found at most natural food stores or online.

You can also add to your food by cooking with it. Add a stalk or two to your favorite soup — it pairs well with chicken noodles. You can also add it to poultry or fish before baking.

Semen Swallowing improves women’s mood and boosts pregnancy health.

0
Prof Raphael Nyarkotey Obu

Many people have asked whether swallowing semen or rubbing it on your body has any health benefits. Others are also concerned about the health implications of swallowing semen. Do you also know that semen is different from sperm?  Hence, in this article, I herein provide a scientific review of these important issues.

Mann, Thaddeus, (1908)-  explained that semen is a “viscous, creamy, slightly yellowish or greyish” substance made up of spermatozoa — that most people say sperm — and a fluid called seminal plasma.

This means that semen contains two separate components: the sperm and the fluid.

Sperm — about 1 to 5 percent of the semen — are the tadpole-like reproductive cells that contain half of the genetic information to create human offspring. The seminal plasma fluid, which is about 80 percent water, makes up the rest.

Semen, safe to ingest?

Studies attest that the components that makeup semen are safe to ingest by most people.  Also, the swallowed semen is digested in the same way as food. Though, some will experience some allergic reactions it is rare.  This is known as human seminal plasma hypersensitivity (HSP).

Is semen protein-rich ?

Though, semen has a huge reputation as a rich source of protein, however, the content of the protein means that one has consumed gallons of semen to see any dietary health benefits. Also, the volume of semen ejaculate differs from person to person — depending on a variety of factors, such as age and health — protein is only a small part. It’s about one-twentieth of the entire fluid.

Are any other ingredients in semen?

Apart from the sperm, protein, and water, semen also contains a variety of other components, such as:

  • sugar, both fructose, and glucose
  • sodium
  • citrate
  • zinc
  • chloride
  • calcium
  • lactic acid
  • magnesium
  • potassium
  • urea

Calories?

Yes, but not as much as one would think. Also, sperm isn’t highly caloric.

Every teaspoon of ejaculate — the average amount of ejaculate produced at one time — is around five to seven calories, which is about the same as a stick of gum.

Semen, taste?

The taste depends on the individual semen. Hence, there is no universally accepted description.

it can taste bitter and salty, while for others, it can taste sugary sweet.

There is hearsay evidence from the women that what men eat could affect the taste of the semen as well when they swallowed. Some foods have been mentioned that could make semen taste more edible, or less acidic, such as:

  • celery
  • parsley
  • wheatgrass
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • pineapple
  • papaya
  • oranges

others also believed that these foods could make the semen bitter, as well as drug-like substances, such as:

  • garlic
  • onions
  • broccoli
  • cabbage
  • leafy greens
  • asparagus
  • meat and dairy products
  • alcohol
  • cigarettes
  • coffee

Semen,  smell?

Jen Anderson(2019) explained that semen smell also depends on many factors such as diet, health, and hygiene. There are instances where smell can smell like bleach or other household cleaners. This has to do with its makeup of ingredients, to provide a pH level where the sperm can thrive.

Unlike the vagina, which naturally skews more acidic, semen tends to be neutral or slightly alkaline. It stays around 7.26 to 8.40 on the pH scale — which ranges from 0, highly acidic, to 14, highly alkaline. On the other hand, if semen smells musky or fishy, this could be due to outside factors. Like taste, a more putrid smell could be attributed to diet, in the same way, that asparagus affects the scent of urine. Sweat and dried pee can also make it smell bitter.

Semen swallowing, science

Semen improves mood

One study by Michael Castleman(2011) in Psychology Today explained that:

  • women whose vaginas were exposed to semen (i.e., ones who reported “never” using condoms) showed significantly better moods.
  • The positive effects of semen on mood include fewer bouts of depression and suicidal thoughts.
  • The effect of semen on mood could be advantageous for sexually active women over age 50 who are experiencing menopausal blues.

This means that there could be natural antidepressant properties in semen.

These may include:

  • endorphins
  • estrone
  • prolactin
  • oxytocin
  • thyrotropin-releasing hormone
  • serotonin

The study conducted by Gallup et al.(2002)  surveyed 293 college-age females to examine if exposure to semen, without the use of outside condoms worn on the penis, affected their overall mood.

The survey found those who were directly exposed to semen showed significantly better mood and fewer symptoms of depression. However, this is not promoting unhealthy sexual practices as condom use is still recommended to prevent sexually transmitted diseases amongst the unmarried.

Stress

Michael Castleman(2011) in Psychology Today also believed that semen on women could also have stress-relieving properties. This is a result of the mood-boosting properties of oxytocin and progesterone hormones, both of which are found in semen.

Also, it is believed that vitamin C and other antioxidants found in semen could reduce sperm impairment by fighting oxidative stress within the semen.

Improves Pregnancy health

The mood-lifting and anxiety-reducing benefits extend to pregnancy health. One case controlled-study by Einarsson et al.(2003) found that females who were exposed to sperm for longer periods, both before and during pregnancy, were less likely to develop preeclampsia, a rare pregnancy complication. Though this is one such study and more is needed.

Side Effect

Tirednesses after swallowing semen

There are instances where people get tied after swallowing semen. A study by Sharbatoghli et al.(2015) found that semen contains melatonin, the natural hormone the body releases to regulate sleep cycles. This could be the reason why some get exhausted after swallowing semen or being exposed to it during intercourse. Though more studies are needed in this area to explain in detail.

STI and Semen Swallowing

Swallowing semen like any other form of unprotected sex, can put you at risk for an STI.

Without a barrier birth control method, bacterial infections, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, can affect the throat. Skin-to-skin viral infections, like herpes, can result from contact.

Hence, it is prudent to know the person you engage in sexual intercourse with.

Allergy

Though it is not common. Wesley Sublett and Jonathan A. Bernstein(2011) found about  40,000 female semen allergies in the United States.

Symptoms of a semen allergy usually show up 20 to 30 minutes after contact or ingestion and may include:

  • pain
  • itching
  • redness
  • swelling
  • hives
  • difficulty breathing

Semen, spit, or swallow?

Jen Anderson(2019) answers this: “Whether you choose to spit or swallow is entirely up to you and your personal preferences. Before making a decision, make sure that you have an open conversation with your partner about their STI status. This will help you evaluate the overall level of risk. In the end, you should only do what you’re comfortable with”.

Fela Kuti wanted to marry me –Onyeka Onwenu

0
Onyeka Onwenu

Legendary Nigerian singer, Onyeka Onwenu, has revealed how the late Nigerian musician and activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, once sought her hand in marriage.

In an interview with Kadaria Ahmed on her podcast, Quarter to 12, the celebrated singer, author, actor, and activist recounted her experience with Fela and how she criticized the military when he was arrested.

Onyeka said, “When he was arrested for taking money out of the country, there was a decree that you don’t take money out of the country, and this is money he had earned from the tour he previously had, and he took, I think, about 1000 something pounds.

“He was caught with it, and he was arrested. He couldn’t meet up with his concert, and they arrested and jailed him. And I came up and said, “No, that’s wrong.”

She also revealed that it was at that point that Fela fell in love. He invited her to his house when he was out and knew she was going to say no.

“He knew that I would say no. I later heard that he had a bet with someone that she is going to run. Watch her reaction.”

Mr Eazi

Surviving in the industry with hit singles, Nigerian superstar, Mr. Eazi has announced that, he will release his long-awaited, decade-in-the-making debut solo album on October 27, 2023.

The maiden album of the Artiste cum Entrepreneur is available for a pre-order. The 16-track album is released alongside the lead single ‘Chop Time, No Friend’ and its accompanying music video, shot in Dakar, Senegal, by director Allison Swank Owen.

‘Chop Time, No Friend’ is a playful return to the Banku music sound Mr Eazi pioneered and popularised with his early singles and mixtapes. “‘Chop time, no friend,’ is a very common Ghanaian saying, something you will see written on the front or side of buses,” Mr Eazi says. “It means when you are eating, you don’t think about anybody. You are just focused on your enjoyment” he added.

“It is touching on how people chitchat on me, but I am still focused on my enjoyment. It is a declaration, a celebration of self. I am saying everything I touch turns to gold. You can’t trouble me” Mr. Eazi stated.

Mr Eazi has clocked over four billion streams of his songs across digital streaming platforms, making him one of the most streamed African artists worldwide.
